FEATURED ARTIST On the Cover

Jenny Bullard

I was born into the world of art with both parents being serious and successful artists. Our home was filled with my parents’ artwork and the art of others that they collected while living around the country as a Navy family. I spent my childhood going to art shows from Monterrey to Virginia Beach--so naturally, I wanted nothing to do with the art industry. I fought the inevitable most of my life, and although I refused to put brush to canvas, I have always been creative, whether it was painting furniture, making jewelry, or having my own line of hand-decorated hats (jab-wear). Finally in my 50’s, I have accepted the baton and am proud to keep the family tradition alive and flourishing. With no formal training, I like to think that I was just born with paint in my blood. My intense love for color is the driving force that compels me to paint. With my florals, I like to push the boundaries of realism into abstraction and the whimsical. I like my paintings to be happy and fun...not realistic. I hope my work will encourage people to use their imagination. I also love creating abstract pieces. I hand-build my wood frames, paint with acrylics, add gold leaf and cover with epoxy resin. They are rich and beautiful and my number one sellers. Every home needs one. Being a Navy brat, traveling is in my blood. In the past year, I have traveled from Florida to Colorado exhibiting my art in over ten shows. My goal for 2018 is 15 shows. My art is currently in the Fairhope Artist Gallery in Fairhope, AL and in Courtyard Interiors in Edmond. I work out of my home studio in Oklahoma City and post my pieces on Instagram and my Jenny Bullard Art Facebook page. I am so honored to be the featured artist at the 40th Annual Downtown Edmond Arts Festival. It was about 28 years ago that my mother, Joan Betancourt, exhibited in this show, so it certainly has some sentimental value there.

WELCOME TO THE 40th Downtown Edmond Arts Festival

By Erika Williams This year marks the 40th Annual Downtown Edmond Arts Festival and organizers have worked hard to make this festival bigger and better than ever. “We’ve got new things for the kids, and the festival market area. The band is going to be in a different location this year which will give a few more areas for kids’ activities,” said Stephanie Carel, president of the Downtown Edmond Business Association. With over 130 artists, music from the University of Central Oklahoma, food trucks, and children’s activities, this is the biggest event in downtown Edmond. “We have great artists and great food,’ said Festival CoChair Bryanne Wallace. “Every year we try to improve on everything and all the money made stays right here in downtown.” The Arts Festival is donating to a different charity every year. This year, the charity is Angels Family Foster Network, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of Oklahoma foster children. “All of the downtown merchants donate items to go into a gift basket that the charity sells tickets for, for an opportunity

to win all the items in the basket,” said Festival Co-Chair Becky Crow. To celebrate the fortieth, Oklahoma T-shirt Company is selling T-shirts with special designs commemorating the anniversary. The festival has something for everyone. Several different art mediums are being represented, and the children’s area offers numerous activities. “Many of the artists, like photographer Patrick Hall and sculptor Lisa Regan, have been with the arts festival for close to 20 years,” said DEBA Vice President Mary Edwards. “It provides a family friendly activity in downtown for three days. We’ve been really lucky to have good weather, so huge crowds come out, and we strive to keep it family friendly.” “This is our fortieth anniversary for the festival. I wasn’t a part of it then, but I can remember when it was just six booths,” said Wallace, who has worked with the festival since 1999. “It has gone from mostly a craft show to a juried art show. The food has just gotten better and our children’s area has grown extensively. It has all just grown and changed for the better.”

The Angels Foster Family Network Mission Our mission is to rescue abused, abandoned, and neglected children, match them with a select group of trained foster parents, and ensure the maximum emotional, social and intellectual development of each child. At Angels, we have a passion for caring for our community’s most vulnerable population—children in foster care. Thanks to Angels’ foster families, volunteers and donors, Oklahoma City’s foster children can be assured of a bright future filled with people who gather around them to love them unconditionally. We are proud to serve Oklahoma and Cleveland Counties and appreciate the chance to be a part of positive change and stories with promising outcomes. ARTIST SHOWCASE

GRAFFITI ARTIST Chris Sker

Page 11

Chris Sker is a painter, muralist, graffiti writer and photographer, born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After attending Booker T. Washington high school, he attended the University of Oklahoma on full scholarship, graduating with a BA in advertising. Chris works full time, is a married father of 2 daughters, and is a creative entrepreneur. Sker’s history in graffiti goes back further than any other artist in Oklahoma, and he is recognized as one of the original founders of the state’s graffiti culture. Sker transitioned into commissioned work, getting hired to paint professional murals for a long list of clients. He still hones his skills regularly, painting for dozens of clients in Oklahoma, painting at legal walls and art events, and working hard to continually develop his talents. As an independent event promoter, Sker has curated the following Tulsa art shows: • “Fokus” 2008 at Loose Leaf Gallery | 2-man show with Chris Sker and Kris Kanaly from OKC • “Okie Boys Graffiti Invitational” 2008 | 10-man day-long public graffiti art event, with OKC and Tulsa artists represented • “Art Party” 2009 at the Continental | 4-man group art show with David HEK Rogers, Aaron Whisner, Anthony Carrera & Jake Beeson • “Decked Out” 2011 at Pen & Ink • “Decked Out 2.0” 2013 at Colour Studios • “Decked Out 3.0” 2015 at Mainline Gallery • Group art shows, each featuring 20+ artists from OK and nationwide In addition, Chris Sker has been commissioned for professional mural work by numerous companies, private clients, and organizations (including ABC TV’s “American Idol,” Tulsa International Mayfest, Guthrie Green, Greenwood Cultural Center, Wagoner Public Schools, and Tulsa’s Young Professionals), and he has shown work at OKC’s IAO Gallery and Tulsa’s Living Arts Gallery. As an artist in the inaugural Plaza Walls Mural Expo (OKC, 2016) as well as both Habit Mural Festivals in Tulsa, Sker is showing no signs of slowing down.
