"Snapshots of Freedom"

LibertyFest has 10 Festival Events to excite, entertain and dazzle our Festival audience. On the 4th of July, Fireworks will start at 9:30pm. It hosts Oklahoma’s largest hometown 4th of July parade with over 100 entries. The grand finale of LibertyFest will be the Fireworks and entertainment the evening of July 4th. The Fireworks display is the largest in the Oklahoma City metro area. Please join us in thanking our wonderful volunteers. They have been working hard to provide the "best and safest" family friendly, 4th of July events for Edmond citizens and our guests. Remember to keep your belongings close to you and consider placing a tag on your backpack, diaper bag and other items that includes your name and phone number. THINGS YOU WANT TO KNOW about LibertyFest 2019: • The 4th of July parade is scheduled for July 4th at 9am in Downtown Edmond. Application Deadline was Friday, June 8th. Every year on the day of the parade there is no parking on Broadway from 2nd street to Ayers. The cross streets are 'no parking' back to the alleys for Broadway. Edmond Police will be doing security sweeps of the parade route before the parade. Any vehicle parked in the above mentioned area after 7:45am will be impounded. The Edmond Police department would like to inform as many people in advance as possible of this fact. We hope to have a fun and enjoyable parade and do not want to inconvenience anyone. However, due to the number of people attending this large function, certain security measures are necessary. Thank you for your cooperation in advance and have a great holiday. Thank you, Lt. Todd Strader Edmond Police Department (405) 359-4442. • The Fireworks will be at Hafer Park and the “Fireworks Staging Area,” the areas around it in all directions will be closed to walking, driving and parking at 4pm. • Be kind to your pets. Letter

FROM THE

President

Terry Officer

WELCOME TO LIBERTYFEST 2019 EDMOND, OKLAHOMA’S FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION. The LibertyFest theme for 2019 is “Snapshots of Freedom." The entire LibertyFest committee intends to promote the patriotic heritage and freedom of our community, state and country. It is the fervent desire of the committee to bring to the Edmond community events that will provide the “best fourth of July celebration ever” for you and your family. It is no surprise to many I can be told to “go fly a kite” and will never be insulted. I’m almost always ready to fly a kite. The KiteFest has been my special interest and passion for all its’ twenty nine years. We are still located at KiteFest Lane and north Santa Fe. My special invitation to all, old and young, is join us and we’ll fly a kite together. I think it most appropriate for me to extend a special “thank you” to all the LibertyFest sponsors who make our ten events possible with their generosity. They are all directly a part of the success of our patriotic, family oriented, activities. “Thank you” is my best expression of gratitude for all the hundreds of volunteers that make LibertyFest a successful celebration. There is no better group to be a part. Finally, I want to extend a personal LibertyFest invitation to you, your family and friends. The LibertyFest committee and volunteers would be honored by you joining us to experience the patriotism, freedom and family fun we present to you and the Edmond community for 2019. Help us make this the best LibertyFest ever as we enjoy it with you and make your own “snapshots of freedom.”

P.S. Go fly a kite!

Letter Publisher FROM THE

Ray Hibbard

It is such a privilege for Edmond Life & Leisure to be asked to produce this official program for the LibertyFest Committee. This is our 18th year of doing so and it is just as exciting as the first year. We also take just as much care and feel just as much responsibility as we did the first time we produced this program. We thank the committee trusting us with this responsibility, Edmond Life & Leisure considers it an honor. Of course, this program would not be possible if it were not for all the advertisers you see in these pages. They make it possible to pay for the printing and distribution of this program full of information about LibertyFest. This format allows for better publicity about our Edmond celebration and lets folks know more particulars about what is happening and when. I hope you will thank and patronize the advertisers in these pages for their support of the only LibertyFest Official Program and Guide. The big heroes for LibertyFest are all the volunteers. They contribute hundreds of hours to making this weeklong celebration easy for Edmond to enjoy. The work and planning for LibertyFest events goes on year-round. Volunteers take time away from their families and other responsibilities to make sure we all have a pleasant and safe experience at these events. They are all folks who love their community and our country. It is truly a labor of love for our LibertyFest volunteers. I need to extend a personal thank you to our staff for their hard work on this program in addition to keeping up with the work for our growing weekly newspaper. The chair of the marketing committee for LibertyFest, June Cartwright, has our appreciation for her valuable help as well. We could not do this without you, June! We wish you and your family a safe and happy Fourth of July and hope you will join us in our Edmond LibertyFest Celebration. It is certainly a fitting tribute to our fine nation. It is one of the best celebrations in our great United States. Our family looks forward to seeing you along the parade route and at all the other events.

KiteFest

SATURDAY, JUNE 29 AND SUNDAY, JUNE 30 West side of Mitch Park on N. Santa Fe and KiteFest Lane, FREE ADMISSION Sat. 9:30 A.M – 4:30 P.M. & after sundown a Lighted Night Flight (wind & weather permitting). Sunday 9:30 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. The 2019 KiteFest will be located on the far west side of Mitch Park on KiteFest Lane. We will be flying between mile roads Covell and Coffee Creek on North Santa Fe. The Kite Festival will include many events for the experienced flyer as well as the novice. We will paint the sky with hundreds of kites flown by anyone who wants to “go fly a kite.” So bring, make or buy a kite and fly it. There will be team demonstrations by experienced kiters. The two-line kites are flown in synchronized figures and patterns by three or more kiters. There will also be kiters flying four-lined kites in patterns never dreamed of by the kiters of yesteryear. The Kite Festival will include making kites for even the youngest kiter and a place to fly their new kite. Candy drops from a large kite will occur several times Saturday for the kids. Several Master Class kiters will demonstrate new kites and flying techniques. Some traction kiters will pull their buggies with kites. Everyone is welcome to bring their own kite. Small sled kites will be given to every child so each child can fly a kite. Other kites of various sizes, colors,

etc. will be sold by our vendor, “Wings of the Wind Kites and Toys.” All are invited to come and fly a kite or just watch. Homemade kites are welcome. We will ask for donations to support KiteFest and the kite giveaway. All of these festivities and EVENT CHAIR many others will take place at Terry Officer Mitch Park on KiteFest Lane between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Saturday, June 29th and Sunday, June 30th. Saturday will include a silent auction for those interested in bidding on a kite or kite related objects. Donations for the auction would be appreciated. So clean out a closet or kite bag and help out KiteFest. After sundown the kiters will return and do a night-fly. (Saturday only – night fly – weather and wind permitting.) Lights will be placed on the twolined kites and flown together in many patterns. Many have described this as an experience with UFO’s. This is a “must see” for those who have never witnessed a night kite fly and for those who have. Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. is dedicated to kite flying for anyone who wants to “go fly a kite” on KiteFest Lane. If there are any questions about this event contact Terry Officer at (405) 341-5477. All kite flying events are weather & wind permitting.

FROM THE

President UCO OF

Patti NeuholdRavikumar

WELCOME TO LIBERTYFEST!

Cities across our nation are celebrating another year of freedom and democracy envisioned more than two hundred years ago by our country's founding fathers and held precious still today. As the state's first higher education institution, we live and work in the glory of those early ideals and educate our citizens to understand the value of the democratic process that nurtures them. We are committed to contributing to our country's future by helping our students become engaged citizens who think critically and understand the power their voice can have in shaping our destiny. As an integral part of the Edmond community, the University of Central Oklahoma has been a proud contributor to the citizenry of this great state for 129 years and we look forward to the next century together. The parade will wind its way through our city today, launching from our campus heralding the exciting activities of the day. Through the sounds of the patriotic anthems played by the musicians in the concert on the campus lawn and the delight of the brightly colored fireworks bursting in the air above, we wish you a safe and happy Independence Day with your friends and family. May you be filled with pride of this great country and all for which she stands.

Road Rally

• Entry Fee is $10 per vehicle • Registration begins at 10am – Release Forms Required at Registration • First Car Out 11am and Last Car Out 2pm • Awards Ceremony 5pm at Earl’s Rib Palace. • All participants will register/start/end at Earl’s Rib Palace, 2121 S. Broadway. 2019 marks the 31st Anniversary for the Road Rally. The event is designed as a fun family event and really easy to participate in. It is just like a scavenger hunt on wheels. Instructions/Driving Directions/and the Questions are given to you at the start line at Earl’s Rib Palace. Follow the directions to tour all around the city answering questions as you go. Road Rally Officials will also note the time and your vehicle mileage on your Road Rally Answer Sheet. TIP: bring a clipboard or something to write on and several pens or pencils with you. The course lasts less than two hours. The car with the most correct answers and having the closest time and mileage to the ideal time and mileage is declared the winner. It is important to realize that this is NOT a race but a timed event. Finishing too fast is just as bad as finishing too slow. Registration will begin at 10am. The first car will leave at 11am. Participants can leave anytime between

11am and 2pm. (You can register and then come back to begin.) The entrance fee is $10.00 per vehicle. Trophies are awarded to the Top Ten finishers with the lowest scores and for Last Place. There must be at least two people per vehicle – a driver and a navigator. Many cars actually have several people in them. The more eyes looking, the better. But, there is one word of warning: the Road Rally has tested people’s relationships and marriages in the past…and will undoubtedly do so in the future. A good sense of direction (and sense of humor), logic and common sense all come into play. Some answers are easy, others are tricky. The challenge is there for you to take. Road Rally answers and trophy presentation will be at 5pm. Please park next to Earl’s Rib Palace by Edmond Furniture Gallery and bring your chairs. Please note that it could be sunny and hot at this time, the Road Rally ends at 6pm.

All LibertyFest Road Rally participating cars must complete a Rally Release and Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement. Participants under the age of 21 will need a signed Parental Consent, Release and Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk, and Indemnity Agreement AND a signed Minor's Assumption of Risk and Release and Waiver of Liability.

A native of Great Bend, Kansas, Rear Adm. Greg Slavonic was raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Oklahoma State University and then enlisted in the Navy. After completing boot camp and Signalman "A" school he received orders to the aircraft carrier USS Constellation (CVA 64) and completed two western Pacific deployments in support of combat operations in Vietnam. In 1976, he earned a master’s degree from the University of Central Oklahoma. In November 1990, Slavonic was deployed to Southeast Asia to support Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and assigned to General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, commander, U.S. Central Command. He was assigned to the Joint Information Bureau (JIB) in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He served as the chief of the Navy’s New Desk and the senior combat correspondent pool (CCP) officer. The CCP assignment included embarking with a media pool aboard the USS Tripoli (LPH 10) when the ship struck an underwater tethered mine causing extensive flooding to the forward third of the ship, almost sinking her. In his 34 year career, Slavonic served in many leadership roles including four command tours. On one command tour, he was honored as a recipient of the Rear Adm. Robert Ravitz Award for public affairs excellence. He led two Joint U.S. Military Assistance Teams to Manila, advising the Armed Forces of Philippines on effective use of strategic communications operations against the

Rear Admiral Gregory Slavonic Islamic terrorist group Abu Sayyaf. In addition, Slavonic lead public affairs team which coordinated and executed the media coverage for commissioning ceremony of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and for movie premiere “Pearl Harbor” aboard the USS Stennis (CVN 74). Slavonic was the Navy’s sixth special assistant to the chief of information in Washington, D.C., and director of public affairs (Reserve) from June 2001 to 2005. In this dual role, he served as principal advisor to the chief of information responsible for all aspects of the Navy’s Public Affairs Program. He established and maintained professional working relationships with Navy Secretariat offices, other Department of Defense commands and activities within the Pentagon and in the Washington Capitol Region. In addition, he was responsible for the training and readiness of more than 500 public affairs specialists

assigned to 26 different units across the United States. In June 2004, Slavonic was mobilized to support Operation Enduring Freedom II, Baghdad, Iraq. He was assigned to the newly formed Multinational Force-Iraq (MNF-I) staff and served as the director of strategic communications and public affairs for Commanding General. He was the first U.S. Navy flag officer assigned to MNF-I and directed the daily operations for Combined Press Information Center (CPIC). During his deployment he also organized and directed the media pool for the first court appearance and arraignment of Saddam Hussein and eleven other high ranking Iraqi officials. In addition, worked closely with U.S. State Department to resolve many sensitive international issues at the historical biblical site of Babylon. His military awards include the Legion of Merit Medal, Bronze Star Medal (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (three awards) Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation and numerous other campaign and service medals. During his civilian career he held many media management positions. He served as co-chair and led the effort to design, build and raise $1.1 million dollars for the USS Oklahoma Memorial at Pearl Harbor. Slavonic was formerly the chief of staff for U.S. Senator James Lankford (OK-R) and on June 11, 2018 was sworn in as the 19th assistant secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs.

Fireworks Safety « Only use fireworks if they are legal in your

area. Shooting fireworks illegally will likely result in fireworks confiscation by authorities (a waste of your money), fines or even jail time.

« Follow the instructions for fireworks usage on the packaging. Use them only as intended. Do not try to combine fireworks to get a bigger bang or light display.

« Sparklers can be beautiful but also dangerous. Do not let children under the age of 12 handle sparklers.

« Fireworks should be operated solely by an adult. This adult should wear safety glasses. Spectators should keep a safe distance. « Never throw or point fireworks at someone, even in jest.

« Fireworks are for outdoor use only. Do not light them indoors and then carry them outside. « Keep water in a bucket and a hose nearby for safety reasons. « Don't hold fireworks in your hand or have any part of your body over them while lighting. « Point fireworks away from homes, and keep away from brush, leaves and flammable substances. The National Fire Protection Association estimates that local fire departments respond to more than 50,000 fires caused by fireworks each year.
