I

had plans last night, but they got waylaid. I was heading out when my iphone rang or chirped or did whatever it does when someone wants to FaceTime. It was my granddaughter Aubrey, calling from Denver. I settled into a comfy chair and answered.

14-16

Aubrey is wonderful and cute. And thanks to the FaceTime, I can see she now has short hair.

18

Sandy, my late wife, and I raised Aubrey until she was eight years old. And she still, and will always, have a room here. She’ll be visiting for a week over Spring Break, just days before turning 13. I’ll have to find some fun stuff to do. (Thankfully, there’s a list of fun stuff to do on pages 14 and 16.)

7 STEPS TO AN EMOTIONALLY HEALTHIER YOU

Help for the stresses of life.

Aubrey reminds me of what it was like to be a preteen. She complains about mandatory attendance of Spirit Week at school. About chores she has to do at home. About how stupid boys are. (Except for Zander. Hmm, that’s new.)

Business

She knows I’m dating someone and asks me how that is going. She wants to hear all about it because, according to her, dating in your 50s is cool. She has no idea how uncool it is. She says she doesn’t want me sitting on the couch alone. So I assure her I will forge ahead.

I ask her if she has any cool words for me to try out. Some of her past gems have been “on fleek,” “woke,” and “suss” - as in “suspect.” She keeps me up on her junior high vocabulary. I ask about her squad (A squad is a group of friends. I learned that a while ago). She’s quick to tell me she still says things like “dope” and “rad.” She thinks those words are cool. I assure her they were...in the 80s. So, for now it’s a live video chat. Soon, it will be warm hugs, smiles and Spring Break together. A vacation for her and staycation for me. Rad. ome Oklahomans might spend their whole lives crossing the

state’s roadside attractions and hidden gems off their bucket lists, but not Scott and Katie Henderson. They took a different approach.

In less than two years, this husband and wife team researched and photographed Oklahoma’s unusual, historic and often overlooked areas. Now, that visual bucket list is on display inside Science Museum Oklahoma’s SmART Space galleries. Scott, director of SMO’s smART Space galleries, researched the locations while Katie photographed and edited the images for the “Off the Beaten Path” exhibit, which opened in November 2016. Among the 43 photos from around the state, visitors can see the rough, patchy skin of North America’s second-largest herd of Asian elephants in Hugo, a light bulb in Mangum that has been burning for 89 years, and one of America’s “Muffler Men.” Some sites were fairly well known, like the Blue Whale of Catoosa or Totem Pole Park. Some, on the other hand, were more challenging to find. “A few were hidden back in the brush off of dirt roads and we had to use coordinates to find them,” Katie said. “That was part

8

l

l

MARCH 2017

of the fun: finding and discovering them. We explored some very small towns and had people from the town helping us hunt things down.” Whether the sites were well known or not, the couple said many will be lost if someone doesn’t invest more time and care in preserving them. “We were surprised by a lot of the historic places, the condition and disrepair they’re in and the sad state they’ve been left to,” Scott said. “It was a little disheartening.” One that stands out in particular, Scott said, is the Wheelock Academy, a building that functioned as a boarding school for American Indian girls from 1884 to 1955 and is now in Oklahoma folklore as a reportedly haunted site. Although the building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the deterioration is evident, Scott said. The two hope the gallery inspires Oklahomans to learn more about their state and see for themselves the aging attractions and overlooked locations. The smART Space Gallery is located at Science Museum Oklahoma, 2020 Remington Place, Oklahoma City. The exhibit runs through May 4, 2017. Admission to SMO’s smART Space galleries is included with the cost of general admission. Learn more at sciencemuseumok.org/ smart-space.

Green with ENVY Create your own secret garden. Or give the neighbors something to talk about. Either way, beautifully designed landscaping will not only enhance your personal pleasure of your outdoor area, it can add 20 percent more value to your home.

There are two main styles when considering landscaping,” says Andy Nelson, President of Nelson Landscaping. “You can go with traditional, or branch out into something more contemporary and modern looking. Nelson, who unofficially started his landscaping business at 12 years old with a mower and a deep desire to purchase baseball cards, has seen nearly everything that can be done outdoors in Oklahoma over the years. The extreme weather, from hot to cold to hot again within a single 24hour cycle, limits what plant species will thrive and bloom in the state. However, even within the small pallet of options, Nelson says each style can be unique and create a distinctive appearance that will survive the shifting temperatures. When considering which style best suits you, here is an easy way to tell them apart. Traditional, he explained, is considered far more colorful with an arrangement that creates symmetry. There’s always a mix of flowers, perennials, and evergreens to create a vivid mixture of color and clean lines. Modern, on the other hand, is far more monotoned. Landscapers will usually take one plant species and create a mass planting. There is little variety of species in the design and it’s limited in color, usually staying with the cleanliness of all green with small touches of white. Whatever style fits, either can be executed successfully with the right plants, trees, shrubs, and design to fully utilize the possibilities. Nelson Landscaping nelsonlawnservice.com 405-202-4120

Open up and organize the busiest room in your house - the kitchen! - by utilizing below counter storage. Framing PHOTOS OF FUN

Family portraits, favorite vacation pictures, that crazy picture of you skydiving, print them with pizazz. Create artful statements with your photo, says Tim Francis, Owner of FrameMaster. Recreate your favorite photos on canvas or even watercolor paper, which stylizes the finished product. “It’s a unique way to have fun, tweak, and change up family photos,” he says. CABINETS DRESSED IN WHITE

Kitchen cabinet colors are in a style shift from the natural golden stained oaks of the early 2000s to the pristine shades of white. Cool colors are cool again. “White is timeless,” says Kevin Calmes, Owner of Legacy Painting. The white kitchen cabinetry will not only brighten a tired kitchen, it will create a style that will age beautifully.

Turn your backyard into a coveted social spot. Relaxing, easy to maintain, patio furniture brings the comfort of the indoors into the romance of the outdoors. For the best look and quality, Beverly Swanson Hayden, manager of J.C Swanson’s Fireplace and Patio Shop, recommends Brown Jordan’s Pasadena collection, a stylish aluminum collection available in sling, padded sling, and cushioned pieces.

6 easy DIY Tips to Refresh Your Home Outside, the world is saying it’s time for renewal. The dead is coming back to life, the coolness is giving way to warmth, and every gray thing is turning vivid again. Inside, however, your home may still feel like winter. Is it time for an interior Spring? We sat down with the experts in design and organization to give us some quick and easy tips on how to bring Spring indoors without costing you a season of savings:

By Gia Rose, Designer’s Market Interior designer & showroom manager

By Dan MacKay, Tailored Living of Edmond Owner/President

DESIGN

ORGANIZATION

Most Oklahomans have familiar pieces, like their grand mother’s armor or rocking chair, they want to keep, but they still want a modern style to their home. To do this is all about balance. And Oklahomans do this so well. By adding a few nontraditional or modern elements with your traditional, you’ve updated your space. It can be that simple. Here’s where to start:

Clutter creates stress, mental fatigue, and disorganization. To really air out your space, you’ve got to organize or remove anything creating chaos. Here are three steps to help get you organized:

Pick one central, inspirational piece. It can refresh your space and serve as a guide for all other design decisions in the future. To know which piece is right for you is about falling in love. Find a piece you love looking at everyday. Also, make sure the piece has elements that tie into other elements in your space, such as a red color, certain form, or a metallic frame that coordinates with the other gold pieces in your space.

The underlying key to organization is that everything has to have a place and everything belongs in its place. If you don’t have a place for something, it ends up on the table, in the garage, or stuck in a corner. You need to create a place for it or assess whether or not you need to keep it.

1 Your inspirational art piece

2 Add a rug for texture, color, or both

In everything in life, you need a staple element and that’s your rug. It anchors your space. If you’ve chosen an abstract piece of art for your space, use a geometric patterned rug. Get the colors working together and you’ve got instant coordination.

3 Accessories tie it all together

An easy way to freshen up space is to change out pillows, lamps, and accessories on your coffee table. These are quick updates that make a huge impact. The easiest way to create a welcoming, light, and airy feel is to stay with items that have simple lines and can be seen through, such as glass.

18

l

EDMONDOUTLOOK.COM

l

MARCH 2017

1 Everything must have a place

2 Sort, shed, or store

Sort your items. Find out what you want to keep and what to get rid of. When you’ve decided what you want to store, consider if the items have a place. If not, you need to create a place or consider putting it back into the shed pile.

3 Assess your storage areas

Once you’ve determined what you want to store, take inventory of your storage areas, such as the pantry, garage, laundry room, and closets. Purchasing additional storage bins, drawers, or other organizational pieces can help you create and maintain an organizational system using the space you have available.

Life can be challenging when things are going relatively well and seem nearly impossible when things are not. This is because everyday events affect our emotions and our emotions can have a direct, physical influence on our health. In Latin, the word “emotions” means “to move-out.” So we can see that “emotions” are a result of what is going on inside our body and they need “to moveout” of our body one way or the other. Did you know that how you feel about yourself affects your body, mind, and spirit? It also manifests in your parenting and relationships because it influences how you relate to others. The body’s response to stress is to suppress your immune system. This causes a cycle of problematic health challenges. Different emotions actually impact different organs in our body, which can cause the stress to manifest itself through different health issues. (See chart above.)

The variety of choices for your meal ranges from traditional dishes, like enchiladas, burritos, and tacos, to unique combinations that bring a rare taste all their own, such as the Parrilla with Argentinian chorizo or the Peruvian ceviche made with Basa fish. “I try to take inspiration from so many places,” says Juan. “My goal is to WOW my customers with flavor and surprise them with the exceptional service that surpasses their expectations of what service should be.” To serve even more, Hidalgo’s will soon be expanding their current location to include an additional private room, while also offering more takehome service and catering.

Hidalgo’s is exactly what you’d expect and exactly what you don’t. And that’s exactly how Juan Hidalgo envisioned it. “My dream was to create a restaurant based upon my family’s heritage and our core values of service and unique details, while also representing a contemporary version of Mexico’s traditions,” says Hidalgo, owner of Hidalgo’s Cocina & Cantina, 200 South Santa Fe Avenue. From the moment you walk into the door of this festive, welcoming restaurant, the flavors will delight, but also surprise, you. Customers are greeted with crispy homemade corn chips and garden-fresh salsa, but Hidalgo’s doesn’t stop there. Socializing is not only for parties and on-line communities. It is the interactions with our family and friends that is the home fashion trend never going out of style. The way that people use their homes has changed over time. Homeowners now prefer to gather with family and guests, in an open kitchen concept, since the kitchen is the real living room of the home, states Leslie Peake, co-owner with her husband Dan, of Heritage Renovations. Cooking Up

memories

I’ve always said the Army did me a big favor. It made my late husband, Carl, appreciate my cooking. Had we married before he experienced mess hall food, it might have been a different story. However, I was fairly good at baking so as my first gourmet delight I sent heartshaped cookies to my sweetheart while he was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He loved them and raved about my “autographed cookies” as he described them since I put our names on them. Later, as a young newlywed, I put my skills to the test with a soufflé. I had never made one but it sounded interesting. Everything went as planned until the end of baking time. The recipe said to “test” it but didn’t say

There is a transformation taking place around Edmond’s small, unique Stephenson Park. The city-owned park is a WPA (works progress administration)-constructed asset. The park is surrounded by other WPA-constructed projects, such as the State Armory and American Legion Hut. The park is bordered by a rustic stone containment wall and contains several unique bridges all thanks to the WPA. The area surrounding the park is undergoing its most significant change since its WPA era construction. Although separated by 2nd Street, this area on 5th Street is technically in the Downtown Edmond Downtown Urban 28

how. Having made cakes all of my life, I took a toothpick and poked it into the soufflé. Stunned, I watched that beautiful creation sink to a bit of nothing. Determined not to let it be a complete disaster, I scooped out the middle and mixed it with Cool Whip and put it in pretty parfait glasses. Carl never knew this wasn’t the dessert I planned. But I have to wonder what he would have said about the cranberry bread I recently baked. It was one of his favorites. After a long afternoon of baking, I had six loaves of cranberry bread cooling on my kitchen counter. But they didn’t look right so I tasted it. I left out the sugar! What do you do with six loaves of bland cranberry bread? You store them in the freezer until you can figure it out and start all over. The next batch was good and my sweet hubby would have been pleased. In case it isn’t obvious from my walk down memory lane, I’m thinking about Carl a lot these days. March would have brought our 51st wedding anniversary and

District. Grant Group owners Casey Massegee and Chris Anderson have quietly been buying up many of the buildings and much of the land surrounding the park with the intention of creating a synergistic, urban, mixed-use, walkable area. I had the opportunity to sit down with Casey and learn of his vision for the area. Casey expects to have approximately 100,000 square feet of mixed-use buildings around Stephenson Park with a mixture of retail, restaurant, multifamily residential, and office when complete. On the corner of 5th and Broadway, the Grant Group has been approved to build a 6,000 square foot mixed-use building with a commitment for a Tucker’s restaurant on the bottom floor and office space on the second floor. The company has a 14-unit townhome project slated for the corner of 3rd and Littler, called Towns @ Stephenson Park. The largest project is a 16,000 square foot mixed use building at 5th and Littler named Park17. According to Casey, “the catalysts are in place for a successful urban environment where you can truly live, work, and play. You have a public gathering place at the park, a grocery store, pharmacy, dry cleaner, and three of the best restaurants in the state.”

I miss him. But I still say the Army did us a favor, and it wasn’t just about cooking. Our year-and-half separation while Carl was overseas taught us to never take our time together for granted. Thankfully, God gave us 45 years of love, marriage and celebrations. I Am Blessed!

Casey recognizes the benefit of correct “tenant mix” and intends to bring tenants to an area that the City of Edmond residents want, but also ensure the tenants complement one another by attracting patrons at different times of the day. This appears to be the making of what we refer to, in our business, as “good density” and a valuable contribution to downtown Edmond. Dr. J. Servant Minded Edmond students will be working hard over Spring Break to help those in need.

From middle school to college, hundreds of Edmond students are taking their break time to make a difference. Whether going out into the world, the nation, or the city, these students are opting to spend their days off making a positive impact. If you happen to be in any of these areas, or would like to support their efforts, here are some of the places you’ll find local students serving others. The Regional Food Bank The seventh and eighth graders from Crossings church will be helping out at The Regional Food Bank, as well as helping with programs and clean-up at Wings and Peppers Ranch. “They’ll be up and out by 9 am and working hard until 4 pm,” says Angie McDowell, middle school ministry coordinator for Crossings students. Nashville Urban Mission High schoolers from Crossings are heading out east for a week of serving the city of Nashville through Nashville Urban Missions. Partnering with the Center for Student Missions, 45 students and nine adults will be serving this local ministry by helping various city organizations, such as YMCA or the Boys and Girl’s Club. Capital Hill Elementary School Students from Memorial Road Church of Christ are reaching out to their OKC student body by spending their Spring Break helping with repairs at Capital Hill Elementary School building. Approximately 40 college students will be painting the walls, creating murals, making gift baskets to leave for the teachers, building benches for kids to sit on in the hallway, creating a reading area with furniture and shelves, and performing any repairs that are needed.

Acuna, Mexico Middle and high school students from The Well church will be traveling with 40 adults to Acuna, Mexico to help build homes with Casas por Cristo. With many residents in poverty, some creating homes out of trash, the church mission trip will be spending the week building two small houses for local families in need. “It’s one of those world changer trips,” says Cole Taylor, lead pastor at The Well. “When you go, your whole worldview changes and you don’t come back the same.” Dallas, Texas Approximately 20 middle school students from St. Luke’s United Methodist Church will be traveling to Dallas to work with Trinity River Mission over the break. Students will be working with smaller children, around elementary age, to provide tutoring, mentoring, and reading help. Toronto, Canada High schoolers from St. Luke’s will be spending their break up north in Toronto, Canada, working at the spring break day camp hosted by Urban Promise. The camp focuses on serving underprivileged youth in low-income neighborhoods in their city.
