SUMMER LOVIN’

20

BREAKING BARRIERS

I’ve taken on a new adventure.

It requires no physical exertion, expensive equipment,or exotic destinations. And, it’s something any of us can do daily. The adventure started at my dog groomer while picking up my freshly trimmed doggie. As I settled in for what I expected to be a short wait - there were a couple of dog picker-uppers in front of me. No problem. I can entertain myself. I instinctively reached into my left rear pants pocket for my phone. It wasn’t there. Panic set in. I patted myself down. Other back pocket - no phone. Front pockets - no phone. Thigh pockets (sometimes I wear cargo pants because I have a keen sense of fashion) no phone. I’d left it in my car. What was I going to do for the next few minutes? I could think of no other way to occupy my time and that’s when my adventure started. Feeling a little daring and a little like a dork, I threw caution to the wind and engaged in small talk. Hello lady in front of me. What kind of dog do you have? Oh, really? I am not familiar with that breed. Awkward? Yes. Familiar? Somewhat. As the words tumbled out of my mouth, we eventually engaged in a pleasant conversation. If you’re new to this process (or, like me, new again), let me break it down for you. It generally goes like this: Ask a question. Listen to the answer. Pause. Process. Re-engage or end loop. Now I’m leaving my phone in my car intentionally. I’ve grocery shopped, gotten new glasses, bought new tires, and picked up to-go order food - all without my phone. I’ve talked to people. Met people. Gotten story ideas. Sure, I’ve been ignored by (or annoyed) a few people who would rather look at their phones than converse. That’s fine. No judgement here. It’s just an adventure I’m on. You’re welcome to enjoy your phone. Or join me. Dave Miller Back40Design, President

WHERE CAN I GET A GOOD

fish taco? Edmond has a story to tell, a known and unknown one. She’s mysterious like that. It isn’t about fish tacos, but fish tacos is where I’m starting.

As a career storyteller, I’m always seeking the uncharted, unexpected, and downright fascinating about every person or place that crosses my path. That goes double for my community. Not only do I have this insatiable hunger (this partially explains the fish tacos) to discover all the hidden gems or just quirks about my city, I also have the stubbornness to believe I can find them.

THE ZU SPORTS GRILL . 16 S BROADWAY These babies have a nice kick in the sauce. If you’re wondering what constitutes a “kick” in my vocabulary, my dial lands around the medium salsa range. For you eaters of jalapeños, that’s another way of saying I’m a wimp.

Or enjoy myself while trying.

3 CHELINOS . 1612 S BOULEVARD Veggies come standard. Veggies! When I left, the manager asked why he didn’t remember seeing me before. “Because…I’ve never been here before?” Just a guess.

TL in Town is a new column dedicated to exactly that: the hunt to uncover Edmond and all her knowable and unknowables. What’s new in town? What’s not? What’s unique? What’s entertaining? Is it possible to meet every resident? If not, how close can I get? What I hope this column does is show the people and the place we live in more detail. Like seeing it through a magnifying glass. Or zoom lens. Or eyes of a close talker. If you have ideas for this column, email me. They don’t need to be about food, but I chose this topic while going far too long between meals. And aren’t I glad I did.

HERE’S WHAT I FOUND…SO FAR: 1 MATACHINES . 180 W. 15TH, STE. 150 So tasty. I ate all three in one sitting. Then I sat longer because I ate too much. Next time, I’m ordering the pozole soup. I have no idea what’s in it. But the woman taking my order said it’s delicious and I trust her completely.

HOMELOOK

Home Facelift?

There is a season for everything under the sun, Solomon once said. He wasn’t specifically referring to painting the exterior of your home, but he didn’t exclude it, either. If you’re looking for a way to protect your home, enhance its appearance, and increase your property value, exterior painting does all the above. When’s the best time to paint your home and when is it necessary? We asked Kevin Calmes of Legacy Painting to give us the when’s and what for’s of repainting the exterior of your home. Temperatures “May and June are the ideal time to repaint the exterior of your home. You can still paint in 100-degree weather, but you’ve got to work around the sun.” When the temperature increases, the heat of your home’s exterior wood surface, coupled with the heat from the sun, will cause your paint not to adhere. In May and June, the temperature, as well as the calmer winds, creates a more advantageous climate for painting. Timing “The surface of your exterior wood needs to be coated every eight to 10 years. This protects it from UV light, water, freezing, and all other elements.” Never wait until the paint is peeling, cracking, or fading before repainting. These are signs the exterior of your home is unprotected. Calmes recommends going according to the eightto 10-year timeline. Not only does this create continual protection for your home, but, if you hire the job done, it saves you money on preparation time. Product “Dark colors fade quicker than lighter. If you want a darker color, use the highest quality paint so it’ll retain the color longer.” Calmes also recommends using high-quality caulk and sealants, which are an often overlooked detail. Call a month ahead of the time you want your home painted. With this being the busy season, quality painting companies will need notice to get you scheduled. Patio and Fireplace THE GREAT OUTDOOR COMFORT

Easily give your family more space to move, live and relax by creating a second living room outdoors. No need to expand your walls. Go outside of them, says Beverly Hayden of J.C. Swanson’s Fireplace and Patio Shop. Beautifully handcrafted wrought iron patio furniture gives you style and durability, while deep cushions provide plush comfort, such as this set from the O.W. Lee’s San Cristobal collection.

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

Create more intrigue and dimension to your outdoor environment by incorporating landscape lighting to your shrubs, trees, patios, and water features. Not only does outdoor lighting showcase your hard work and investment, it also adds a level of security. Andy Nelson of Nelson Landscaping recommends using uplights for trees and path lights to highlight shrubs, flowers, and pathways. NELSON LANDSCAPING NELSONLAWNSERVICE.COM 405-202-4120

Framing SPRUCE UP TOUGH WALLS

Do you have lonely walls in your home? Walls made of brick, rock, or metal, often stay bare, but they can be decorated. Although installing anything on these walls requires special tools and know-how, it can be done safely and effectively, says Tim Francis of FrameMaster, who does professional installations on hard surfaces, as well as installations for heavy artwork, mirrors, and gallery walls.

Swimming Pools SWIMMING IN CALMER WATERS

When is the best time to prep your pool for summer? Right now. The warmer the weather, the more algae and bacteria grow. Don’t wait until mid-May, says Howard Fleming, co-owner of Pleasant Pools. Prepping sooner will keep the chemicals and labor lower and, therefore, the cost less. PLEASANT POOLS PLEASANTPOOLS.COM (405) 456-0172

The Top 2017

Must-Have Summer Styles

Fashion trends are heating up to cool you off. The summer trends for 2017 range from stripes to khaki to light-infused colors like sunshine yellow and candy pink. There are styles making a comeback and styles forging their own path, so what styles are the ones to pay special attention to this summer?

MAY 2017

We asked Edmond experts in fashion, jewelry, and hair to give us the must-haves. If you can enjoy any styles this summer, these are the ones to catch your eye.

CLOTHING

Denim or chambray tops and dresses. It’s cool. It’s casual. It’s here. Cold shoulder tops will be peeking out all summer. Give your feet a kick with lace-up booties. Celebrate the summer blooms with fashionable florals. Give your white jeans a modern flare. This summer’s go-to color will be making you blush.

JEWELRY

Jill Haney, The Vintage Pearl • • • • • •

Make it personal. Jewelry with messaging continues to speak volumes. Mixed metal pieces - sterling, gold, and copper or brass - are intertwining everywhere. Skinny stacks. Put them on your fingers and wave them proudly. Minimalism is making a classic comeback. Tiny pieces on chains are here to stay. Aim high with shorter necklace chains. The style is closer to the collarbone with 16” or 24” chains. Bangles are adding flare to the wrist. Stack and go.

• • • •

Chokers, chokers, chokers. For all ages. Go for the classic look with a simple pearl or add intrigue with stones and floral pieces. The Awesome 80’s, with bright neon colors, feathers, bling, and oversized creations, is back and making a splash. Large pieces are in for necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, but not all at once. Pick one big piece and wear it like art. Natural stones are so 2017. Healing stones, natural colored stones, local stones. All beloved.

HAIR

combo and it’s working. Undercuts are giving rise to the extreme lines of the season. Go from short to blunt.

• •

This summer, women want natural, free-flowing, and low maintenance. For color, go all natural - ombre and balayage or all extreme - pastels and gems. Or choose rose gold, the color that loves everyone.

Café Icon By Laura Beam

Trendsetting Cosmopolitan Dining in Edmond

Who says Edmond can’t do the stylish, cosmo dining scene as well as the big city? Cafe Icon in Edmond has defied the norm and set a whole new standard in ultra-fashionable suburban dining. Amid the glam of sleek chrome, white leather and moody lighting, this urbane eatery serves up show-stopping fare and premium cocktails you’d never believe you’d find right in your own neighborhood. And what better time than summer to soak up the Zen mood, gather with friends and linger over a fabulous cocktail?

Mok says. “We bring in the best, like Blue Marlin and Blue-green Snapper from Hawaii that are unlike anywhere else.” At Cafe Icon, guests certainly do find an astounding and rare assortment of seafood hailing from all over the globe. With 84 different sushi rolls for the choosing, this menu is the high fashion of fusion cuisine.

Prepare to be impressed. The drink lists are exceptional, beginning with “very, very select bourbon,” remarks Cafe Icon owner, Patrick Mok. “If it’s not aged, it’s not on my shelf.” A seasoned restaurateur, Mok also spent six months crafting the perfect wine list--one that delights the connoisseur but doesn’t overwhelm those who simply want a nice pairing with their meal. The well-appointed cocktail list is also a hit with guests. “The Cucumber Cosmo is one of our sexiest drinks and the flagship for summer,” Mok says, “along with delicious mango and other fruit concoctions.”

For those craving other specialty foods, the signature lava stone grilled steaks and entrées are a true attraction. An 800-degree lava stone is served tableside, allowing guests to cook each juicy bite of Angus steak, lamb chops, seafood and veggies to perfection right at their table. The stone holds its heat for 45 minutes, inviting you to slow down and enjoy this interactive dining experience.

This iconic restaurant is also the standard-bearer in traditional and fusion cuisine. The seafood is beyond fresh. Imagine your favorite tropical vacation with your toes in the sand all day, culminating with a luscious seaside dinner. It’s that kind of fresh. “We have less than a 24-hour turnaround on seafood delivery,”

Though it’s right in the neighborhood, Cafe Icon, with its contemporary flair and trendsetting fare, offers the ultimate escape from the norm. Café Icon - 405-340-8956 311 S. Blackwelder Ave., Edmond, or find more at thecafeicon.com

Breaking Barriers By Tara Lynn Thompson

Malchus Skateboard Ministry Does What It Takes

Jonathan Albarrán motioned to the concrete jungle. We sat on the metal benches at the Mitch Skateboarding Park, neither of us blending in well.

He wore a fashionable pink dress shirt and tie. In his early 40s, neatly dressed and groomed, he looked like the IRS revenue agent he is, not a skateboarder. But tell that to his seven broken bones. Albarrán started skateboarding at 40 by standing in the chaos and wondering what to do next. He looked lonely just standing there rolling around,” said Landis Legge, a 10-year-old skateboarder with blond hair permanently feathered by the wind. “So I taught him to drop and carve. Do you remember the first night you did the seven?” Legge asks Albarrán. He’s referring to the seven-foot bowl, an invitation to death when standing on the edge. “That was crazy. Legge is one of “my boys,” as Albarrán calls him. One of the 35 skateboarders in his Malchus Skateboard Ministry, a Christian outreach to young skateboarders. With the majority of skateboarders living in poverty, without both parents, attending alternative school or not attending at all, the ministry introduces them to Jesus and never lets them feel alone. “It’s a subterfuge. I’m doing everything I can to trick these kids into going to church with us,” says Albarrán, whose eyes never leave the skateboarders. “That’s awesome!” he shouts after one of his boys finished a trick, then turns to me, “Did you see that? It’s so much harder than it looks.” Albarrán would know. Most of the time, he’s in the

thick of it. He knows the moves, lingo, and unspoken rules of the bowl, which he explains while pointing out a blood stain in the concrete. For the majority of these boys, this isn’t only a bunch of skateboarding enthusiasts or a bible study group. It’s their only support system. “Most people I’ve met wouldn’t give me a chance. They’d see just another black person. I had that attitude. When I first met Jonathan, I was getting over my ‘ghettoness.’ But he gave me a chance,” says Darrick Gotcher, a 20-year-old skateboarder who bashfully shrugs off Albarrán’s enthusiastic “this guy is one of the top ten best skateboarders in the city!” Now, after a little over a year with the ministry, Gotcher says, “I kind of see him as a dad. I look up to him as a mentor.” Beyond the skateboarding, Albarrán takes the boys on trips, from skateboarding events to even a recent car show. On the drive to their destination, he talks about God. “It’s one thing to be willing to break bread with these kids. But when you break bones with them, they know you’re for real,” says Albarrán. The 501c3 ministry has many needs. If you’d like to find out how to help, connect with Malchus Skateboard Ministry on Facebook or at MalchusSkate.org.

“We care deeply about the spiritual formation of our kids and we think that happens in lots of different ways, from the classroom setting to hands-on experiences, to serving others and time doing fun stuff with friends,” said Andy Lashley, MRCC involvement and communications minister. “We feel like that takes on lots of different looks, so we try to offer a robust lineup of activities and classes to help kids learn in their different learning styles and show them that people care about them and God loves them.” This year, MRCC has put a year-long focus on short-term mission projects and programs. The church just launched GoMission, an initiative that Lashley hopes will spur 2,000 members to complete short-term missions with non-profits, ministries and missionaries both here

in the Oklahoma City area and in places around the world. “We feel like if we’re not getting outside of our walls here, we’re not living our mission,” he said. “We want to be a part of our community, a part of our town — to make a positive impact on our world — and just do good things for people. That’s part of our core mission, to be loving people and to be loving God.” Lashley said many families are drawn to Memorial Road Church of Christ because of the diverse programming; its ability to maintain the feeling of a small, family-focused church as the congregation continues to grow; and its strong outward focus. “We take care of each other, and that’s hugely important so that we’re equipped to get outside our walls and interact with other people and serve other people.” Visit mrcc.org or call (405) 478-0166 to learn more about Memorial Road Church of Christ.

Change Your Child’s Life. Send Them To

By Michael Staires

owever, during all the thousands of last night H events I’ve attended during my career as a camp

director, the things that are shared never cease to amaze and inspire me.

On the last night of camp, it’s tradition for everyone to gather and share meaningful experiences from the week. Usually, it starts with this question: what happened to you this week? What follows are the funny stories, goof-ups, and silly things done in the cabins or dining hall.

These are the other stories beyond the humorous mishaps and entertaining events. These are the stories of redemption, of repentance, of change. I’m convinced there is nothing in a kid’s experience more powerful, moving, or life-impacting than a summer camp experience. Camp has a way of impacting a kid’s life like nothing else. I’ve seen kids, who never gave a single thought about the bigger things in life, crumble into a heap when discovering the awe and wonder of nature. Likewise, I’ve seen hardshelled loners melt when exposed to open friendships. During almost every final night camp meeting, there is one person who stands to speak but can’t find the words. The silence extends as they fumble to explain the unexplainable. But what happened to them is too big, too powerful, and too intimate to capture in words. For those kids, camp will always be a life-changing, miraculous experience. It’s been an honor to spend the majority of my life in this little corner of God’s vineyard doing this wonderful and worthwhile work. Day camps, sleepover camps, athletic camps, wilderness camps, STEM camps, they’re all powerful in their own unique way. If you want to change a child’s life, send them to camp.

Michael Staires is a writer and longtime summer camp director. He’s the author of A Long Ride Home, a young adult classic.

CITYLOOK

Golf

By Dr. J. David Chapman

In The Rough

Edmond is known for its proliferation of professional golfers, such as tour fixture Bob Tway and up-and-coming tour golfer Charles Howell III. In our leafy suburban community, golf is a cultural norm, even recently hosting PGA events. While sitting in sunny San Diego at the American Real Estate Society conference hearing researchers report on the state of communities built around golf courses, I listened with renewed interest. Afterwards, I was watching the Masters Tournament, contemplating the future of golf, and the closing of the Coffee Creek public golf course. Developers build golf courses because they can purchase land for as little as $500/ acre, build a golf course and create housing

projects that are worth $80,000/acre. This impressive financial incentive created a boom from 1986 to 2005 with 5,000 new golf courses built, accounting for 44 percent of the golf course stock. Seventy percent of those courses were linked to master planned communities, such as Coffee Creek in Edmond.

golf. At that time, being affiliated with a golf course increased the value of a lot anywhere between 4 to 12 percent, depending upon proximity to the course.

Starting in 2006, we started seeing a fundamental change in the success of golf, golf courses, and golf-course based real estate communities. From 2006 to 2016, 1,500 golf courses closed, which accounts for a 5.9 percent decrease in golf courses nationwide. These were primarily what we refer to as “value” courses, like Coffee Creek in Edmond. In 2016, we saw 212 courses closed and only 15 openings in the U.S. Research shows that golf, as a sport or activity, is declining in popularity. Experts claim this decline is partly due to golf courses being built by developers to sell real estate lots during the boom from 1986 to 2005, and not by the golfing industry. The courses built were too difficult and only 30 percent of the residents of those communities actually played

Last year, the U.S. saw a reduction in the number of golfers from 30 to 24 million, and the average age is at an all-time high of 52 years old. To stop this tailspin, the golfing industry will need to reinvent itself and get millennials interested in the sport. Until the popularity increases, golf-based real estate communities will continue to struggle and more courses will close, decreasing property values for those who purchased in these communities. Genuine Hand Scraped Wood Floors Installed (minimum of 300 sq. ft.)

Time to say out with the old tile and carpet and in with new wood floors. Are you dreaming of new wood floors, but dread the mess associated with tearing out your tile? Are you tired of your 70’s carpet, but the thought of working with unreliable installers stop you in your tracks? Kregger’s Floors and More is here to help. Not only does Paul Kregger and his crew offer outstanding friendly and dependable service, but they have also created a system that eliminates many of the hassles most associated with tile removal. Their new dust collection system minimizes the dust. Although their technique is not dust-free, Kregger says it is “light-years ahead of the rest.” With most companies, replacing tile can take a week or more. Besides eliminating much of the dust, with Kreggers, your floor can be free of tile and prepped for new flooring in no time. “Most people think that the task of replacing tile is more construction than they want to deal with. With our manpower and no ‘middle man,’ your tile can be gone in as little as one day!” said Kregger. The installers are what set Kregger’s apart. This ensures customers are getting someone who knows and shows skills he’s familiar with to install their flooring. “In some stores the installers are folks the store has known maybe a day, maybe a year. It’s hard to say. At Kregger’s all of our installers are long-time

employees or family members.” Edmondite Christy Dowell says, “We have a home full of Kregger’s floors! New wood floors, tile floors, rugs, a shower and soon to be carpet. Paul and Chris and the rest of their crew have been a pleasure to work with; always courteous, respectful and punctual. They are also very trustworthy. We left our home to them for a week and came back to beautiful wood floors. It seems to me that ‘satisfaction’ is their number one goal...and I am completely satisfied! I highly recommend Kregger’s Floors and More.” Kreggers is now offering an unbeatable $5.99 psf on genuine Mohawk hand-scraped wood

ALOOKBACK

By Louise Tucker Jones

Prodigal

Once upon a time I had a daughter. She was beautiful with long black hair, olive complexion and big brown eyes. Paula was just shy of four years old when Carl and I brought her home to be part of our family. She giggled and talked nonstop in spite of the fact the caseworker said she might need a little speech therapy. Oh no! She would definitely need therapy later, but not for speech.

I held Paula on my lap the day we made our adoption final. Suddenly, she was our daughter, our little girl. Ours to keep. Ours to love. Ours to teach and guide. Unfortunately, those early years of neglect caused Paula to develop an attachment disorder, something unnamed and unknown at that time. To Paula, no one was special and rules meant nothing. Her teenage and young adult years were turbulent. Not knowing how to give or accept love, she looked for that missing part of her soul in all the wrong places. Her life was all about leaving. Always leaving someone who tried to love her. There were years with no communication. Then just before her 40th birthday, I got a call from my granddaughter. Her mother, who had been absent most of her life, was dying. I went to the hospital. I sat beside my daughter. Suddenly, Paula’s boyfriend made an inappropriate comment. She quickly turned to him and said, “Watch your mouth

around my mother!” I smiled. Strange as it may seem, that was an acknowledgement of her love for me and I recognized it. Before leaving, I kissed her forehead and told her I loved her. It was the last time I would see her. It’s a sad story and I write it for one reason. Someone reading this has a prodigal and is dreading this coming holiday. Know that the void in your child’s heart did not come from lack of love from you. It took a long time for me to accept that truth. May it be a healing balm to you. And to moms of every age and in every stage of motherhood— Happy Mother’s Day! BIZLOOK By Morgan Day

A&T Mechanical Gone are the days of getting by with a “plain Jane” air conditioning unit or furnace that wastes homeowners’ money, says Jesse Alvarez, head of the family-owned A&T Mechanical in Edmond. Alvarez believes it’s an exciting time to be in the heating and cooling business because technicians get the satisfaction of installing the most up-to-date equipment that can slash utility bills while keeping homes as comfortable as ever. “I’ve always been passionate about the new stuff that comes out, a lot of which is nearly revolutionary,” Alvarez said. “Now we install equipment that communicates with both the furnace and the cooling unit outside. These systems are not only efficient but intuitive; they do everything for you when it comes to humidity, temperature and so on.”

A&T Mechanical employs a team of dedicated, communicative professionals who understand the importance of customer satisfaction. A&T focuses on residential work, so it’s crucial homeowners trust those who are working inside their homes, Alvarez said. “Our guys have such a wonderful connection with each other when they’re on a job,” Alvarez said. “They just know what needs to be done and they know it needs to be done correctly and in a timely form.”

“We really are working together as a family,” he said. “As a father, in my age, it’s wonderful to see that happening. It’s fun for me to wake up every morning and see them work hard to grow this company.” A&T Mechanical - Waterwood Parkway, Suite I-100, Edmond. Visit okatmechanical. com/or call (405) 810-8891 to learn more.

The company, which services homes throughout central Oklahoma, focuses on installation, repair and inspection services to ensure equipment is running as efficiently as possible. Alvarez purchased the company 37 years ago and now runs it with his son and daughter by his side. Together, Joseph Alvarez and Jessica Alvarez-Stacy work to grow the company and handle communications and advertising. Working alongside his kids and watching them tackle business challenges is one of the best parts of running A&T Mechanical, Alvarez said.

How to get your kids talking about their

By Megan Parrish

Megan Parrish is a Licensed Professional Counselor, as well as a Board Certified Art Therapist in Edmond. She utilizes art therapy and counseling with all ages.

Picture this: Your elementary school aged child comes home from school with another drawing or artistic creation. They attempt to show you in the car, while you’re merging into traffic. You respond with “how nice” or “I will look when we get home.” Once home, however, the hustle and bustle of life - getting the car unloaded, asking about homework, children wanting to go outside to play - begins. Sound familiar? Whether the artwork is displayed somewhere in the home, or just placed neatly away with the ever growing collection, did you ever take the time to ask about the art? It is very common for parents to be so overcome with their busy schedules that, when their children show them the newest “masterpiece,” the parents respond with “great job” or “looks awesome.” Some-

times, the children themselves forget to share once home. However it happens, this can be a missed opportunity to better understand your child’s world. Artwork can be a direct correlation to the world around us. It is a representation of our mind at work, attempting to capture different thoughts, feelings, inventions, or memories on paper (or other artistic forms). Asking specific questions about your child’s artwork can be a way to tap into what your child is experiencing. Here are a few things to consider when starting that conversation:

Keep your questions open-ended,

allowing for open dialogue. For example: Can you tell me about what you created? What is this here (pointing to a part of the art piece)? What made you think of creating this?

Make sure the questions are not judgmental or disapproving.

When you take an interest in what they are doing/creating, they will want to begin including you. Art is a creative

outlet, and, at times, provides an avenue for us to make sense of things we cannot otherwise make sense of. Children do not comprehend that this is something art does, but use art in this manner naturally, subconsciously.

Be careful not to assume anything about the artwork.

Keep your responses positive no matter how they answer your questions. If the child sees your face shows negativity or disinterest, or that your response is negative, this will disengage them from telling you about future artwork. Maintaining positivity can foster improved relationships between parent and child and motivate the child to continue sharing bits and pieces of their world.

Don’t shy away from making art with them.

Asking questions about their art shows interest, engagement, and, most likely, requests for you to create art with them. By participating, while continuing to ask questions along the way, you can explore more of what is on their mind.
