SUNDAY SCHOOL SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2ND BRILL CHAPEL 9:30 AM

Genesis 1:1-13

GOD CREATES HEAVENS AND EARTH

Many, One, or None? Ironically, polytheism (belief in many gods) and atheism (denial of any god) both seem to be growing in popularity in Western democracies. Neither viewpoint is new. Scholars have identified more than 2,000 named deities in the ancient Near East, the region of biblical events. As for atheism, the psalmist from centuries ago wrote, “The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.' Psalm 14:1. Polytheism leads to a chaos of competing, fickle gods of equal or shifting strength, and mortals must try to get on the side of the one(s) who will win. One feature of polytheism is the absence of a singular moral absolutes: atheism ends up in the same place. The inevitable results in both cases are moral relativism and the rule of the powerful over the powerless. Genesis 1 reveals, however, that there is only one true God. Only in the existence of a personal God can there be a designed, absolute standard that governs all human behavior and makes sense of the universe. This great true forms the doctrinal foundation for the rest of Scripture. Come early to hear our own Freeta Moore bless us with her piano mastery of the hymns at 9:15am. Tracy Wilson will lead us through this important lesson.

VESPERS THURSDAY, August 30TH 3:30 PM BRILL CHAPEL Vespers speaker will be Keith Howard, Executive Director of Circle of Care, Oklahoma United Methodist Church.

VESPERS THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH 3:30 PM BRILL CHAPEL Vespers speaker will be Rev. Sam Tucker, Senior Minister at Wickline United Methodist Church in Midwest City.

THE VOCAL SOUNDS OF OKLAHOMA FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7TH 7:00 PM GRAND BALLROOM The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., Inc.) was founded in 1938 at the Mayo Hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The dozen-or-so men present agreed that the society should have local chapters in communities around the country. In a drawing, Tulsa became the first chapter, Kansas City was second and Oklahoma City was third. Today, the organization has changed its name to the Barbershop Harmony Society and boasts more than 800 chapters around the world with more than 20,000 members. Most chapters form a chorus and encourage their members to form quartets, since their music is in four-part, acapella harmony. The Oklahoma City Chapter's chorus was called the Singing Sooners for several years before changing it to the OK Chorale. A second chapter in central Oklahoma was formed in the 1990's and their chorus was named Music Central. In 2017 the two chapters merged into one. Neither chorus wanted to be known by the other chorus' name. So, in a compromise, the name Vocal Sounds of Oklahoma was adopted. The V.S.O., with approximately 35 men, including one of Epworth Villa's newest residents, Ed Sturm, will perform a one-hour program which will include both the chorus and some barbershop quartets. This performance will give each of these groups a chance to appear before a live audience as they prepare to compete with similar groups in a five-state district contest in Dallas, Texas, on October 5th and 6th. The highest scoring choruses and quartets will advance to the next level. Prior to the merger, The OK Chorale and Music Central appeared in the International Championship Contest eight times and the OK Chorale has been ranked sixth in the world twice. https://vocalsoundsok.org/

PET POLICY REMINDER In the resident handbook the Pet Policy addresses the responsibilities of being a pet owner. The most frequently reviewed topics are waste removal, noise and pets inside the building. The policy addresses these topics in the following manner: 1) pet waste must be immediately picked up and disposed of in a sanitary manner; 2) pet owners are responsible for insuring that the rights of other residents to peace and quiet, health, and/or safety are not infringed upon or diminished by pet noise, odors, wastes or other nuisances and 3) pets should not be allowed to “roam” but should be on their way outside or on their way back to the owner’s apartment at the nearest exit to the apartment. Pets must be on a leash at all times both inside and outside. A complete listing of pet owner responsibilities is in the resident handbook. Dr. Laura Garrett, Director of Resident Life

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I want to thank everyone for all of the cards and well wishes I received on my recent 95th Birthday. It meant a lot to me! Viva L.

THE VILLA VOICES NEED YOU!! At the recent panel discussion addressing dementia, Travis Taylor said that music has a positive affect on mental health and that in all areas of life our mantra should be "use it or lose it." Sounded to me like he was saying everyone should join the choir. If you are so inclined and for those already committed, choir rehearsal will begin Wednesday, September 5 at 4:00 in Brill Chapel. If you need more information, call me at 405-623-3759.

Jimette M.
