SUNDAY SCHOOL SUNDAY, MARCH 4TH BRILL CHAPEL GOD WILL FIGHT FOR US Genesis 22:1-3, 6-34 Most people don't know what to make of the wars of the Old Testament. People frequently ask me how God's people can go from killing tens of thousands of people in the Old Testament to loving and evangelizing all people in the New Testament. Part of my response is to remind people that God does more of the fighting in the Old Testament than do his people. Lately, however, I am beginning to hear a common response to that statement. People often reply, “I am sure that the Israelites believed God was fighting for them, but all ancient people believed that. Why should we think that God's people were any different?” This is a great question, and the Bible has a great answer. What nation had no standing army? What other nation spurned strategic military alliances? What other nation refused to acquire the latest military technology from Egypt (chariots and horses)? The Israelites took none of these items into battle when they took possession of the promised land under the leadership of Joshua. It is one thing for a nation to claim that God fights for them, but quite another to make zero provisions for national security. It is true that many ancient nations claimed that their gods fought for them. But only Israel dared to march around an enemy city multiple times, blow trumpets, shout loudly, and wait for the walls to collapse in God's hands. In today's passage, Abraham is given an opportunity to do this. Because it is one thing to say that we trust God, but another thing to place our own future completely in God's hands. Because he rose to the occasion, he is a model of faith for us all. John Trent will led us in thinking what that may mean in our own lives.

EVTV MOVIE WILL BE SHOWN On EVTV Channel 1960 SAT. 7:00 PM AND WED. 8:00 PM SAT. 3/3 AND WED. 3/7 Soon after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Patton was given command of the 1st and 2nd Armored Divisions. He immediately set about organizing a training center in the California desert for his troops. Patton headed to North Africa late in 1942 as the head of an American force; before the initial landings on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, he presented his troops with an expression of his now-legendary philosophy of battle: “We shall attack and attack until we are exhausted, and then we shall attack again.” Patton’s lust for battle would earn him the colorful nickname “Old Blood and Guts” among his troops. 19
