GOD IS JUST AND MERCIFUL The Best Rest
Matthew 12:1-14
Someone has said it to you, probably more than once. You heard it from friends and family when you have worked hard for a long time, when you have been under great stress, or when you have been ill: ”You need to get some rest.” Humans are divinely designed to need rest. Our bodies and minds are attuned to the rhythms of days and seasons, thriving on a blend of productive work and peaceful rest. But with so many other matters, we resist what we need. There always seems to be more work for our attention at every moment. We lie awake thinking about what needs to be done. We worry that we have forgotten something important. Our text this Sunday deals with the true rest that God gives his people through Jesus. Tracy Wilson will teach this important lesson. Come early (9:15) to enjoy listening to Fretta Moore at the piano.
VESPERS THURSDAY, MAY 31ST 3:30 PM BRILL CHAPEL Vespers speaker will be Rev. Jessica Higgins, Epworth Villa Chaplain.
VESPERS THURSDAY, JUNE 7TH 3:30 PM BRILL CHAPEL Vespers speaker will be Rev. Mark Foster, Senior Pastor at Acts 2 United Methodist Church, Edmond.

JOHN HAMILL FRIDAY, JUNE 8TH 7:00 PM GRAND BALLROOM The Stories Behind the Song is an entertaining one-hour of piano playing and commentary by jazz historian John Hamill. Taking some of the best of the Great American Song Book (Moonlight Serenade, Take the “A” Train, San Antonio Rose, As Time Goes By, and others), Hamill tells the story about the song and then plays it in his jazz-inflected, pop style. Hamill is a journalism graduate from Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois) who teaches writing at the University of Tulsa. He also teaches ‘The History of Jazz’ in Oklahoma State University’s OLLI program. The former editor of Tulsa People magazine, he hosted KCMA’s Music in the Morning, and the jazz show Midnight Oil. A piano student of Rosalie Talbot beginning in the second grade, Hamill switched from classical to pop when he discovered chords and sheet music. Over the years he has served as music director for the Youth Services Radio Days, RSVP’s Supper Club Show, and the Red Glove Revue. He was a founding member of the Tuxedo Junction combo, played solo keyboards for two years at Jody Walls’ 2300 Riverside Restaurant and currently leads his own jazz trio.

VISUAL ARTS AT EPWORTH ART CORNER The Art Corner will resume meeting on Friday, June 8th from 9:00—11:00 am, with painting, acrylics and etc. As always, for those who want to work on a project alone in the Art Corner, it is available for your use most days and evenings. Also on June 8 we will be starting another craft project for those who would like to participate. Please bring with you that day your used greeting cards and scissors to design cards for holidays, birthdays, etc. This is a money saving project on greeting cards for they can be expensive and we all want to conserve.
NEEDLE WORK We meet on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm in the South Classroom. Those who love to crochet, knit, needle point and so on are invited to join us. If you have any questions, please contact Phyllis at 640-5190.
Something wonderful happened here at Epworth Villa recently. And it has occasioned several surprising and important contacts with other residents. It was the Art Show! The whole show was impressive. I was moved beyond words by several elements of it. There was an amazing variety of objects—works with wood, fabric, needle work, sculpture. Every piece spoke clearly of talent, dedication, and beauty in the soul of the artist. Think of the hours and hours spent! That was one thing that blew me away. Those hours are our lives. So what folks shared were pieces of their very lives. The other thing was the beauty of the art itself. Color mattered, as did design, complexity, and obvious amount of work it took. But words fail! Much of the art touched a place in me too deep to understand or express. There is mystery in what happened to me, and in conversations since, it seemed that may be the case for others of us as well. Another benefit is the connections it creates between us. We know more about each other. And conversations since with the artists, especially, have been more significant. Thanks so much to Sonja VanAntwerpen for making this happen, for all who helped with it and to the artists who shared their lives with us in this way! A very grateful resident
