What I’ve been shown… My dad wasn’t the kind of dad who would sit me down and say, “Son, let me tell you how the world works.” He showed me by example. I admire him for that now, but, as a kid, that wasn’t my attitude. I wanted to know who was this guy who married my mom, had an accent, and looked nothing like me. And he’s now my dad? He showed me love. He came into my life when I was six years old and took over the role of dad, which was available at the time. He showed me patience. Let’s just say in my early years I was lost and aimless. They must have been trying for him. I only recall him losing his cool on two occasions. Pretty amazing track record. He showed me that good honest work pays off. At 19, Dad emigrated to the U.S. from Germany. He never attended college, but he was a brilliant engineer. He worked his way up through opportunities and eventually ran manufacturing plants. He showed me generosity. He put me through one of the best design schools in the country. To this day, I am so grateful for my education. He showed me how to be a dedicated husband. He and my mom were married for 41 years. He loved her, honored her, and took care of her until she passed in 2011. This is my first Father’s Day without my dad. I had the honor to deliver his eulogy in March. I feel blessed for the time I had with him. Hopefully, I will continue to pass on the life lessons he modeled for me. Dave Miller Back40Design, President

Kynnli Ellis, 4-year old amputee, competes in Endeavor Games Kynnli Ellis was born with fibular hemimelia, which means two bones were missing in her lower leg and she didn’t have a fully formed foot. Along with that entrance into the world, however, Kynnli was also born with a warrior’s spirit, and a generous mix of a little melodrama queen. At four-years-old, she is curious and questioning, frilly and flamboyant. She loves her younger siblings, her cousins, and the movie Frozen. She also loves to move because, even as an amputee from age eight months, nothing - not even a missing leg - is going to slow Kynnli down. A Little Attitude “My husband and I knew that whatever our attitude was toward her leg, she would have that same attitude,” says Staci Ellis, Kynnli’s mom. “So, for her first Halloween, I dressed her up as a pirate because she already has one peg leg. Now, she has that same attitude. She’ll turn her prosthetic leg backward and walk around to freak people out.” Ellis’ attitude toward her firstborn’s amputation didn’t happen by accident. It came after a providential meeting with Charlie Swearingen, a flight paramedic and USA Volleyball champion, while waiting in line at Starbucks. At the time, Kynnli was only six-weeksold and Ellis knew an amputation was in her daughter’s future. As a new mom, she was desperate for direction on how to approach a parenting situation most never do. That’s when she saw the man in front of her in line and his two prosthetic legs. She had to strike up a conversation.

She found out that Swearingen, who was dating his soon-to-be wife at the time, was born with the same thing as Kynnli, except in both legs. He assured Ellis that Kynnli would be able to do anything she wanted to do. He was a living example. Even with his prognosis, he had a full, normal, successful, amazing life.

“I told him, ‘I don’t know anything about parenting but especially parenting a kid with a disability. Was there anything specifically your parents did or didn’t do that helped?’ And he said, ‘The best thing my parents did for me after I got my prosthetics was when I fell they didn’t help me up.’” Tough First Step As a new mom, Ellis said that was a hard thing to hear. But necessary. When Kynnli struggled with her first prosthetic at 16 months old, Ellis’ instinct was to help her up. But she knew her daughter, like Swearingen, needed to figure out how to get up on her own. “That was the best piece of advice. And I was fortunate enough to get it early in our journey with Kynnli,” Ellis says. Now, Kynnli never sees anything as an obstacle. Only an adventure. When she turned two, Ellis took her to her first UCO Endeavor Games, an annual competition for children, adults, and military service members with disabilities to compete in athletic games. As soon as we walked in, we went to the track and field event. Kynnli started pointing out all these athletes, ‘Mommy, they all have legs like me! I want to run with my people. Can I run with my people?’ She did run with her people. At threeyears-old, Kynnli competed in the 20-meter dash, 60-meter dash, shot put, discus, javelin, and long jump. This year, she’ll do it all over again, while competing in the 100-meter dash, too. “There’s not anything she thinks, ‘Oh, I can’t do this because I have a prosthetic leg,’” says Ellis. “She doesn’t know of anything she can’t do.” See how Kynnli, along with hundreds of other athletes, compete at the UCO Endeavor Games, June 8-11.

BIGFOOT OSBI forensic artist brings the legend to life.

Harvey Pratt sat on his couch, his wife Gina beside him, in their sprawling adobe home. It looks charmingly out of place in Oklahoma, as if it should be surrounded by red desert sand and cactus instead of the elm trees in green country. It’s also not all that easy to find, located in a tucked away country haven in the tucked away corner of another tucked away bend outside of Edmond. But when you arrive, you know an artist lives here. From the inside out, Native American artifacts, paintings, sculptures of wood or stone are all charming members of the family. Some Pratt created. Some Pratt found. Each an embodiment of a story. Like all of Pratt’s work. There’s always a story. For the last 45 years working with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, 27 of those years as a forensic artist, Pratt has used his eyes and ears, pencil and tablet, to create something solid from eye witness glimpses, glances, and grim memories. He’s created more than 5,000 forensic sketches all over the United States. His art has always solved mysteries. But, a few years ago, it took on one of the toughest mysteries of all: is there a Bigfoot? “I heard stories growing up in my indian culture about Sasquatch,” says Pratt, who said the Cheyenne refer to him or them as the “hairy people,” while other tribes may refer to Bigfoot as “the stick man,” “boss of the woods,” “living solid face,” “big elder brother,” or even “the frightener.” There are as many names for Bigfoot as there are NativeAmerican tribes. “All the tribes call him something different.” The most important point may not be that they call him by different names, but that each tribe recognizes him at all. This was how Pratt and Gina found themselves in Hoopa, an unincorporated community in northern California, interviewing Hoopa tribal members in 2007. Continued on pg 16

David Paulides, a former police investigator who has studied Bigfoot sightings, hired Pratt to do what Pratt does best - listen and draw what he hears. Paulides, at the time, was putting together, The Hoopa Project: Bigfoot Encounters in California, which compiled investigative evidence gathered from eyewitness accounts of Sasquatch, along with Pratt’s drawings from those interviews. “The first drawing looked human, like a human being. And David was just shocked,” says Pratt, who, along with Gina, interviewed Hoopa tribal members and local residents - from law enforcement personnel to doctors - who all had eyewitness accounts of seeing Bigfoot. They believed what they saw,” says Gina. “The mannerisms, the story, their eyes, they believed this happened to them. You couldn’t question that part.

Since that project, those stories have sent Harvey and Gina all over the United States, from California to Minnesota, from Oregon to Idaho, from Texas to Arkansas, listening to eyewitness accounts of Bigfoot. Some of the stories are glimpses, some more interactive. Eyewitness experiences run the gamut. There is a California couple who saw a Sasquatch catch a dear and another Oklahoma couple who ran into Bigfoot while on a hike. There are stories of young Sasquatch playing

with children, or entire Sasquatch families coming out of the brush to momentarily traverse open ground. Pratt said most of these eyewitnesses are so frightened by what they saw, or even disbelieving their own eyes, that they hesitate to share their story. “A lot of people don’t want their name printed,” he says. “They don’t want people to think you’re nuts.” All compiled, however, the eyewitness accounts give a general profile of what may or may not be out there: Height: 9 to 12 feet tall. Weight: 800 pounds easy. Hair color: all different, from white to silver, blond to golden, auburn to black and brown. Also, some are bald on top. Clothing: none, just covered in hair. Communication: a verbal language all their own, one Pratt says sounds like “gibberish.” Food: stories range from apples to watermelons to animals and... people. Pratt says, according to various interactions by eyewitnesses, these Sasquatch are civilized in their culture, but appear to not be as mentally evolved. They are attracted to children, the sound of kids playing or even music. Also, they may stink. Predominantly, they stick to wild, undeveloped areas of the country and, even after all these years, continue to hide because staying out of view is their instinct, says Pratt. After all he’s heard, does he believe, like these eyewitness accounts, that an entire species of Bigfoot exist? “I think there’s something out there,” says Pratt, who would like to see one for himself one day, but has stipulations. “I’d like to see one about 200 yards away. While I’m sitting in a car. A good working car. On a good road. So I can get the hell out of there.” The Bigfoot search continues.

1 Expect nothing and everything. “The best thing people can do is have no expectations on the golf course. When you play golf, you’re really dealing with 90% failure. Golf is about having things you don’t want to happen happening all day. So prepare yourself mentally before you play.”

Though Father’s Day isn’t celebrated as widely as Mother’s Day, I believe it is just as important. Having a loving father in your life allows you to grow up feeling safe and secure. Thankfully, I grew up with a gentle, fun-loving daddy. But there’s another reason that being a good father is important. My late husband, Carl, was a wonderful dad and granddad to our children and grandchildren. But he also invested himself into the lives of friends and coworkers. One young man in particular. Jeff was about the age of our oldest son when he interviewed with my husband. Carl hired and

trained him for company work, but he was also interested in the young man’s family. Jeff had two little boys who sometimes came to the office. Over time, Carl grew to love them like his own grandkids. It was some years later, during Carl’s hospitalization after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, that Jeff told Carl how he had affected his life. As the three of us were waiting for a procedure for Carl, Jeff mentioned that he attended a spiritual retreat for men. Carl was pleased. Jeff assured him that it was Carl’s urging that made him go. At the retreat, Jeff gave his life to Jesus Christ. Carl was ecstatic. “Son, that’s wonderful,” he said, tears streaming down his cheeks.

So I offer this challenge to all fathers, young and old. Remember that you are modeling God the Father to not only your own children and grandchildren, but to others around you. And what greater reward on this earth than to know that you helped someone find life in Christ! Happy Father’s Day! Silent No More

Composer brings silent films back to life

Like many young boys, Breck McGough grew up loving superhero movies. But it wasn’t the action or special effects that captured his interest—it was the music. Now, as the composer of over 20 film scores, he’s turned his sights toward reintroducing the world to musical styles that have gone unheard for nearly a century! McGough began performing historical music three years ago when he played piano during a 1920s silent movie. The Paramount Theatre on film row in Oklahoma City was showing the horror flick, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. McGough wrote an original piano score and played live while the film rolled. “Playing non-stop for an hour-long movie is exhausting, but it’s an overwhelmingly enjoyable to help the audience experience the film much like audiences would have 95 years ago,” said McGough. Performing wasn’t new to McGough, who grew up singing at church. His mom was an opera singer, his aunt was a concert pianist, and his grandma taught him to read music by age of seven. He assumed that all children noticed and loved movie background music. “When I was four, I would play the movie Batman Returns over and over again, but I wasn’t watching the movie, I was just listening to the soundtrack.” McGough eventually taught himself to read and write scores. In college, he met Spike Alkire and Jake Kelley, two filmmakers producing award-winning films. They identified McGough’s interest in history and his ability to create period-authentic music, so the three teamed up to form Everytime Productions. For a college talent show, Alkire and Kelley created a silent film spoof for which McGough composed a three-part piano piece. All three sat on the same piano bench, and as the film progressed, they began fighting over bench space.

“It was a great comic gag, because we really hammed it up,” McGough said. Afterward, Kelley suggested that McGough write a Dr. Caligari score for Paramount Theater. McGough next wrote two silent film scores for the Metropolitan Library System, where he works as an associate librarian. Fellow librarian, Buddy Johnson, described McGough’s personality and performances as, “Sunshine and smiles. When he’s playing music, it’s like seeing the human personification of joy.” McGough enjoys describing the moment he was softly playing during the scene of a woman sleeping. Suddenly, she was snatched up by the main character. “I hit the piano really hard, and I heard the audience gasp,” McGough said. “I knew the music had punctuated the timing of the physical comedy.” The library is now utilizing McGough’s talent to interpret the library’s collections of historical sheet music--songs written in a lost style that haven’t been heard in a century. McGough never dreamed he would use his talent in such diverse ways, but he’s thrilled to combine his love of music and history. “I get a big sense of pride when people enjoy my scores,” McGough said. “Composing music is a dream come true.”
