The birth of abstract art in the nineteenth century was a breath of fresh air in the art world. Until that time, most art had been representational, meaning that it looked specifically like something that could be observed in the real world. Abstraction is non-representational, and is, therefore, more subject to the interpretation of the imaginations of the artist and viewer. Color, texture, and form become more important than the appearance of something that looks like something else. There are several artists that are known for bringing this exciting new type of art to the world.

Wassily Kandinsky Wassily Kandinsky is generally considered to be the foremost pioneer of European abstract art. Kandinsky originally studied and had a career in law and economics, but he was drawn to the study of art at the age of 30. Although Russian-born, his career in art led him to Germany where he taught at the prestigious Bauhaus school. From there, he moved to France where he created his most famous works of art before his death in 1944. https://edmondritter.org/the-best-abstract-artists-of-all-time/

Georgia O’Keefe During her nearly one hundred years of life, Georgia O’Keefe became one of the most beloved American abstract artists, an unusual feat for a woman of her time. After studying and teaching the more traditional forms of art, O’Keefe began creating very abstract charcoal drawings. These drawings were shown to an art dealer who was the first to show her work in 1916. O’Keefe became well-known and respected for her depictions of New York City skyscrapers and scenes from her international travels. However, she is most remembered for her unique, up-close paintings of flowers.

Mark Rothko At first glance, the works of Mark Rothko seem quite simple – fuzzy, irregular blocks of color on a soft background. Upon further inspection, one realizes that there is something special about the beautifully painted rectangles and the quality of light they possess. Like Kandinsky, Rothko was also Russian-born, but he emigrated to the United States as a child. Early in his art career, his works dealt with mythological subjects leading to his association with the Surrealist movement. He remains to be best remembered for the unique color, line, form, and composition of his luminous abstract rectangles.
