1930s… Hepburn reused it in the ’40s… and Keaton reclaimed it in the ’70s. It was the hallmark of innovation and rebellion: flouting fashion’s rules by wearing slacks and sneakers when most women wore girdles and garter belts. “Stockings are an invention of the Devil,” Hepburn declared, and refused to wear them. She became a symbol of independence for womankind, liberating them to be more proactive. So feel free to raid your man’s closet. Blurring the lines between male and female style has altered the landscape of women’s fashion, and is as commonplace as Annie

Hall’s vest and high-waisted khakis. With today’s current economic conditions and ecoconsciousness, borrowing from your beau and upcycling his castoffs is not only responsible it’s also easy on the pocketbook. If you’re not a seasoned seamstress, take your newly found threads to a tailor to transform hand-me-downs into your new fashions on the fly. Joining the new genre of gender-bending prêt-a-porter aficionados will not compromise your femininity. French cuffs, pinstriped jackets and colourful ties create a look that gives double breasted a whole new meaning.

ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

While you’re purging your closet contents, look for other items that can be upcycled and repurposed. For example, we all have old T-shirts from special events or travels that we bought that don’t really fit or flatter, or are just plain worn out. The sentimental value attached to these items makes it hard to throw them out, so why get rid of them? Instead, they can be altered to be made into a stylish new piece of clothing, or repurposed entirely to make something like a quilt, a cushion cover or a tote bag. The same goes for those old sweaters we love. The wool from old sweaters can be felted and then used to make any number of fashion items with ease: belts, brooches, hats, purses—the list goes on!

THE POWER

A

to make a difference

uthor Margaret Atwood voiced this opinion years ago… but it continues to have some legitimacy today. While women have moved beyond their stereotypical roles, much of the world remains male dominated, especially within the political arena. Through hard work and dedication, many powerful women are leading communities, corporation and countries, bringing feminine influence into the political world. I am a longtime community advocate who has entered politics at a time of change. My interests range from education to environment to community development and arts and culture. I think we need to make politics meaningful to Albertans again and that is why I became involved. I was elected for my first term as the MLA for the Edmonton-Glenora constituency in March 2008. Since then, I have been able to provide my thoughts and suggestions, and impact some of the decisions this province has been making. I am very dedicated to my job as Member of the Legislative Assembly and a cabinet minister. I

made aware that many people are concerned believe that governing is a privilege, not a right—a belief that was reinforced when I worked about the cost of rent, affordable housing, homelessness, the environment, community as a writer for Premiers Peter Lougheed and Don safety, and keeping schools open Getty. team behind me. Due to the relationships I have built and the support network I work with, I have been able to accomplish great things. We all know the old adage “it takes a village to raise a child.” The relationships we build help us to move forward in a collaborative, positive manner. This especially relates to my role now as a minister and MLA. Team building goes hand in hand with my third ideal: to listen and value the opinions of others. Everyone— male or female, old or young—has something to bring to the table. When you are placed in a position of power and influence, you must be open to hearing the thoughts of all. Conversations with my constituents help me prioritize the issues and concerns people have. Through these discussions I have been

homework. Whenever I walk into a meeting I have a solid understanding of the topics being discussed so I can contribute effectively. When discussing issues with colleagues, it is important that everyone has an opportunity to present their ideas and work toward common solutions with a solid understanding of the issues at hand. We all have responsibility to form a 360-degree, three dimensional picture of all aspects of every situation. The decisions we make affect many, not just today but tomorrow as well. The respect that is revealed by the attention given will always lead you to the best solution. We must be diligent and always be aware of the cumulative effect of every decision made. Just like dropping a pebble in a pool of water, it is the resulting ripple that should concern us in everything we do. √ Heather Klimchuk is the MLA, EdmontonGlenora and Minister of Service Alberta. CONNIE

KENNEDY A Passion for People By Paula E. Kirman

C

onnie Kennedy is

first and foremost a people person. Her passion for people combined with her vast knowledge and experience is why she is one of Edmonton’s top real estate listers and sellers, and number one when it comes to condos. “You have to have a passion for what you’re doing and a passion for the people who you work with,” Kennedy emphasizes. “Honesty and integrity are important, along with attitude—how you come across to people and how you treat them. I sit and talk to them for hours, so they are comfortable and I really know what they are looking for so I can help them. I enjoy being with the people and am happy when I am helping clients.” A specialist in condominiums, Kennedy has been serving Edmonton since 1968. She is a true pioneer, with many firsts to her credit. In 1969, she sold the first condominium ever in Canada, here in Edmonton. She is the first woman agent to become a member of the Edmonton Real Estate Board. Prior to her career in real estate, Kennedy was the first woman to sell television airtime in Canada (for CFRN) and also worked in the newspaper industry. EDMONTONIANS SPRING 2011

Photo by Bruce Clarke “I broke a lot of ground for women,” says Kennedy, who was also the first woman on the Executive of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. “I don’t think I really had challenges as far as being a woman was concerned because I had credibility, I had knowledge. I know what’s going on, and the men accepted me” The walls of Kennedy’s office are lined with plaques and her desk covered in awards documenting years of achievements. She has been in the top one percent of Re/Max Residential in Canada for a number of years, was selected “Realtor of the Year” by the Edmonton Real Estate Board in 2006, and in 2009 was awarded the Re/Max Circle of Legends, which is the highest professional honour a Re/Max Associate can receive. Kennedy also stands out in her field when it comes to giving back to the community. She donates her time and resources to a number of local causes such as donating a portion of every sales commission to the Stollery Children’s Hospital and the Realtors Community Foundation; donating annually to Camp He Ho Ha (Health, Hope & Happiness); and supporting the Robertson Wesley United Church’s outreach program by providing funds for the food purchased for their meals. “I think that when you live in a community

you should give back to that community,” she says. “I am blessed to be able to help in a lot of ways.” She takes a personal interest in all of her clients, regardless of whether they are purchasing a high-end condo or just seeking a free estimate on their current home. Her sincerity and dedication have earned Kennedy trust, respect, referrals, and repeat business. At Kennedy’s stage of life and success, she could easily be living a life of leisure. Instead, she is at work every day, often getting an early start in the mornings, even on weekends. Maintaining a work/life balance has never been a problem for this mother of two adult sons and grandmother of three. Being an avid reader of non-fiction, watching the news daily, and occasionally visiting her cottage rounds out Kennedy’s busy life. Family has always come first, but the people in her life respect the fact that her profession is very important to her. “I love doing what I am doing. I don’t have to work seven days a week, but I do,” she says. “I enjoy my profession and the people more than anything else.” “I am enjoying my career and looking forward to the future and the challenges of changing real estate product and people’s requirements.”√

hen someone speaks with you about something on their mind and on their heart, there is a great opportunity to connect with them at more than a superficial level. And when you have such a deeper connection, it nourishes both of you. It touches your heart. You feel your humanity and you’re not so likely to feel isolated and alone. Here are some ways of people try to avoid that deeper connection: Advising: “I think you should…” “How come you didn’t…?” One-upping: “That’s nothing; wait’ll you hear what happened to me.” Educating: “This could turn into a very positive experience for you if you just…” Consoling: “It wasn’t your fault; you did the best you could.” Story-telling: “That reminds me of the time…”

It is said that we are a people who don’t breathe naturally... that deep breathing that relaxes the face and nourishes the whole body. Try a slow deep breath or two to help clear distractions from your body and mind. Let yourself feel with the person. Not so you can hold onto that pain, but so you can feel it with them. Then let it go. It is not your pain and taking it on yourself does not in any way help the other person. Rather, it feeds your ego, the little self, and adds to your burden of distortion. Pursuing the right marketing strategy requires a strong positioning statement. with Mark Wardell

I

n 2010, social media was the marketing breakthrough that took the world by storm. Cost effective, accessible and, for some businesses, statistically more effective than traditional advertising, social media marketing has proven to be a trend that isn’t going anywhere. In fact, some big name companies— like Pepsi and Ikea—have pulled back on traditional advertising in favour of amping up their presence on Twitter and Facebook. It has been rumoured that Oprah Winfrey employs three full time staff to respond to the Facebook posts she gets on a daily basis. Indeed, there’s no doubt that 2010 brought us a new pace of communications in the social media realm. Which begs the question: What major marketing trends will 2011 bring and how can your business make the most of them? My prediction: Technology and social media will continue to provide new and valuable platforms for communicating with customers. However, now more than ever, companies will need to understand (and apply) the principles of marketing in order to be effective in the new spaces the future holds. As a business owner, your principle objective is to find a way to let people know what you offer and why they should buy from you, in the most engaging and effective way possible. In other words, you need a strong brand. To achieve this, consider the following two questions: • Why should people buy from your EDMONTONIANS SPRING 2011

business, as opposed to any other business that sells similar products or services? • What’s so unique about your business? If you don’t have specific answers to these two fundamental questions or, more importantly, if your customers and prospects don’t have specific answers to these questions, you’ve got a problem. There is a solution, however, and it’s called positioning. If you haven’t done so yet, I highly recommend spending some time defining yours. Your marketing position is the relative location your business occupies in the mind of your prospects. When your prospective customers think of your business, do they consider you to be: • the fastest? • the highest quality? • the most convenient? • the least expensive? • the most attentive? • the business with the best selection? Or do they just think of your business as one of many businesses of your type... just one more place to go when they need your products or services? An exercise in positioning will help your business stand out. When people think of Federal Express, for example, they don’t just think of a courier, they think of a “guaranteed overnight delivery service”. At its inception, it was a boldly unique position. Sure, FedEx did a lot of other things well, but it focused its marketing efforts on overnight service. Now, even though other businesses

might make the same claim, in the mind of the marketplace, the position truly belongs to Federal Express. That’s the incredible power of positioning. Your objective is to come up with a unique strategy that offers something of value to your market. Start by identifying the specific quality that makes you “number one” in the minds of your prospects and customers. This doesn’t mean that you don’t do other things well; this is simply a rallying point. Once you have identified your position, it becomes the marketing focus of your entire business. Determining your unique position will require some careful consideration, some brainstorming and documentation. However, I guarantee this is an invaluable exercise that will be well worth your time. The resulting document will be a guide that will see you through whatever trends arise in the coming year and beyond. By focusing on the quality of your position, customers new and old will keep coming back for more. √ Mark is president & founder of Wardell Professional Development (www.wardell. biz), an advisory group that helps business owners plan and execute the growth of their companies. magine an environment friendly, sustainable community built from the ground up. That vision will soon be a reality thanks to a new development in the works for St. Albert. like smart grids for power and nano-based construction materials. It will incorporate water recovery and local food production into the overall community plan. The $1.8-billion project has already cleared a major hurdle with St. Albert city council. Now the developers are working through the regulatory planning process with an eye to breaking ground in the spring of 2012. House

construction will probably start in 2013 with the first residents moving into Avenir by 2014. (www.rampartavenir.com) Avenir is a dream come true for financier Gerry de Klerk of Rampart Capital Corp. and his project director, engineer David Bromley. The parcel of land where Avenir will stand is a former dairy farm de Klerk’s family often visited after their emigration from EDMONTONIANS SPRING 2011

By Cheryl Croucher the Netherlands in the 1960s. It lies on the west side of St. Albert between Giroux and Villeneuve Roads. de Klerk calls Avenir a “live, play, work community with the added feature of innovate. We would like to have this community as a platform for the development, research and innovation of clean technologies to be used in various phases of the development.” The community will include residential, commercial and industrial development for a population of 10 to 12 thousand people. de Klerk’s vision for the industrial sector really describes a giant living lab where companies from all over are welcome to to research and develop their innovations in clean technology. To attract these companies to develop their forward thinking technologies at Avenir, de Klerk says “we can take an equity position in those companies by building their facilities or helping them with their equity needs. The technologies that work can be implemented in the development of the community.” Science and technology partners with Avenir include the National Research Council and the University of Alberta through NINT, the National Institute for Nanotechnology, along with the MaRS Discovery Centre, a clean technology incubation centre at the University of Toronto, and Enertech Capital, one of North America’s top three venture capital firms in the clean technology sector. Pointing to futuristic advances in nanotechnology as an example of clean technology, de Klerk says scientists are working on ways to imbed tiny nano hairs in paint, roofing, and siding materials. Sensitive to the slightest movement such as someone breathing, when these nano hairs move they create electricity which can be captured to power a building. It’s this sort of integration of new technology that would feed advanced new infrastructure like smart grids. As engineer and Avenir project director David Bromley explains, smart grid is a two way power grid that allows energy to run back and forth between. Even more exciting is the smart grid’s ability to manage data. He says, “It’s a potential source of broadband. You start having all your communications move across the power grid, telephone, daily Internet and email access, as opposed to having distinct lines and infrastructure.” EDMONTONIANS SPRING 2011

That capability for data collection is useful to Avenir’s plans to manage transportation and energy usage. For example, house lights going out means people are leaving for work. That information can be used to control traffic lights to improve traffic flow.

Gerry de Klerk

We would like to “ have this community

as a platform for the development, research and innovation of clean technologies.

The use of electric cars in Avenir pushes the concept of managing power on the grid even further. According to Bromley, “One of the benefits of the electric vehicle is that it lets you store power. When you get to a location—say your office—once you park, you can now use the power you store in your car as a source of power to the building that you are parked at.” Development of the Avenir community is based on five pillars or platform technologies. Transportation and advanced building materials we’ve already touched on. The other three are local energy production, water recovery and reuse, and local food production. What Bromley likes about these platforms is the way new technologies can be integrated.

This can be illustrated by rethinking a community’s sewer system. He explains, “There’s a lot of heat within sanitary sewers. And, if we could capture some of that heat, it’s amazing what we could probably do with it from an energy standpoint. So there are a number of coatings that are being developed right now that you can actually put inside the sanitary sewer and change (it to) not just being a sanitary sewer but also being a heat exchanger or a district heating system. If you can imagine now instead of the sanitary sewer being just a regular old sewer, that’s probably in some bad condition problems because it’s old and needs to be repaired, that coating does the repair. The second thing is, it changes the sewer into a district heating system. And that will have a huge significant benefit to that community.” Avenir will be a community where energy from solar sources, fuel cells, bio fuels and geothermal are the norm. Rain water and grey water will be captured and used. Local food production will help make the hundred-mile diet a reality through the use of hot house technology and innovations in growing mediums, lighting, moisture control and crop production. Bromley and de Klerk are paying a lot of attention to neighbourhood design to encourage foot and bike traffic. Shopping areas will be within easy walking distance. Greenbelts and trails will enhance that healthy lifestyle while respecting environmental concerns along nearby Carrot Creek. Care to trade in your hiking boots for skates? Of the 10 kilometres of trails, Bromley says that some “are actually going to be skating trails. Think about it, being able to skate down to the commercial area and have a coffee. I guess you’d probably put the skate guards on and take them off again, skate a little further, and maybe look in a shop or two and then go home. I think that’s a neat concept.” His imagination doesn’t stop there. “This is a clean technology community, so the water that will be used to make ice for the skating trails will be reused water.” Of course it will. √ Cheryl Croucher hosts Innovation Anthology which is broadcast on CKUA Radio at 7:58 am and 4:58 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. helps environmental cleanup n March, Gavin Scott departs on the adventure of a lifetime. He headed to the Antarctic as part of environmental activist Robert Swan’s 2041 international expedition to the southern most region of the planet. 2041 is an organization founded to draw international attention to the year when the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty comes up for renewal. Scott is the general manager of Custom Environmental Services, a company which deals in the proper disposal of hazardous waste. He will be joined by five other members of ESAA, the Environmental Services Association of Alberta. They are volunteering their time and expertise to help complete an environmental report on the cleanup of a decommissioned research station in the Antarctic. The report will be presented to the Earth Summit in 2012. According to Scott, “Material from scientific activity was basically dumped. Over the years the snow and ice has receded and these dumps are becoming quite apparent. Robert Swan

44

raised in excess of $10 million dollars and, over the years, he would go down and whittle away at this pile of waste. He needs a report to take to world leaders and, hopefully, this will lead to more funds for additional cleanups in Antarctica.” Scott and his colleagues had to raise about $25,000 each to cover the costs of the expedition. This time of year marks the end of summer in the southern hemisphere, so he expects his high tech clothing will work mostly to keep him dry and protected from the wind. As president of the Environmental Artworks Foundation of Alberta, Scott is also keen on bringing the message about saving the fragile Antarctic environment to students across the province. “They’re the ones who are going to have to do the work in the decades ahead to protect the Antarctic. I never want there to be drilling… never to be mineral exploration on the continent.” In total 52 people from eight countries will participate in this year’s expedition. Video and progress reports will be streamed to schools and media throughout the journey. √

ith the growing international interest in oilsands, Alberta’s oilsands sector has taken an unprecedented step. Seven oil sands companies and the University of Alberta have joined in a collaboration on research to better manage tailings. The companies include Syncrude, Suncor, Imperial, Canadian Natural Resources, Shell Canada, Tech Resources, and Total E&P Canada. According to Brian Schleckser, VP Technology with Syncrude, the companies will share the costs of research and development and have access to the outcomes. “We’re putting all of that on the table with no barriers with regard to intellectual property, to costs, or perhaps licensing the technology. We’re all privy to the available technology and then, capable of working on each others technology.” Schleckser believes that, by pooling their efforts and putting the best minds to work, the companies will be able to implement improved tailings technology much sooner than if they EDMONTONIANS SPRING 2011

were working in isolation. Scientists at the Uof A welcome the collaboration. Researchers there have been investigating oilsands technology for decades. According to Dr. David Lynch, Dean of Engineering, this new agreement between the Brian Sch leckser major players removes barriers and information gaps for the scientists. A steering committee will coordinate the research projects and each company will contribute equally to cover the costs. Dean Lynch explains, “This will translate very quickly into having a director who brings everything together, puts all of the technologies together to see what the road map looks like from front to back in the oil sands process, to say how we can integrate all those different technologies so we can see where one can

influence the other. Of course, the first thing that we need to know is what all of the different pieces are, what are the details at a very fundamental level of what each of the companies have been doing with their own research and innovation on, so that that can all be fully shared up front.” √ EDMONTONIANS SPRING 2011
