Khazana The Best of India in Edmonton

By Paula E. Kirman

K

hazana is a place where the flavours

of India can be experienced without even leaving Edmonton. The deep aroma of the food can be sensed upon walking through the door. It is the genuine and delicious East Indian food for which Khazana is best

known. Rajiv Bhasin, the Director of Khazana, speaks with pride about the restaurant and dining experience. “Khazana is the first five-star fine Indian restaurant in the city.” At Khazana, authenticity is the number one priority when it comes to the food, which is from the northern region of India. “The food is authentic. It is what you get in India or New Delhi,” Bhasin explains. “We do not compromise. It is Indian food. We don’t make a fusion or play with the food to make it more Canadian. We brought chefs from the Sheraton and other hotels in India for the restaurant. The menu was designed by them.” Another unique aspect of Khazana is the incredibly warm atmosphere and beautiful décor. “The theme was taken from one of the finest Indian restaurants in New Delhi. The architect was sent to India to actually see the restaurant and its décor.” As a result, the restaurant has a rustic ambience, full of copper tones and lots of ornate carpets, as well as the three open fireplaces in the dining area.. The kitchen is surrounded by glass so that guests can see the food being prepared. The clay ovens, where around 700 pieces of naan bread are baked each week, are also visible to diners. “People love to see our clay oven and kitchen,” says Bhasin. Khazana is particularly famous for its daily lunch buffet—the biggest Indian buffet in the city. “We have choices of grilled items, curries, a couple of Indo-Chinese dishes, a variety of salads, desserts—lots of desserts—and also a soup. There are also appetizer items like fish pakoras, tandoori chicken, and fried chili chicken and many other choices.” As if that was not enough, there is unlimited masala chai tea as part of its buffet—yet another aspect of Khazana not to be found in other restaurants.

et me dispel a few

rumours about supporting the community. First off, this quarterly magazine is one of my favourites because the name of our city is in its title, Edmontonians… and the reason we exist is because we care about this great city and the people who make it so. In my many years in radio and, since opening up my own media consulting company, I’ve worked extensively at making Edmonton a better place in which to live, make a living and raise a family. I do this by supporting several different charities and events that truly give back to our town in a meaningful way. Since semi-retiring, I’ve proudly been part of teams who have raised more than $22 million for children’s health needs… I’m part of building the great new CKUA home… I’m on the Edmonton Singing Christmas Tree team… and I’m part of a great crew building the

new $21 million dollar Jerry Forbes Centre. My donations are both in cash and—more importantly—in time. The following are a few random thoughts from discussions with many of you over the past few years.

Rumour #1. You need a lot of money to support a cause.

Wrong. Edmonton, as I describe it, is built “one dollar and one brick at a time!” This idea was reinforced by Stevie Wonder on television during the Haiti fund raising telethon when he responded to a caller who was caught up in the “Rumour #1” myth: “You’re wrong. Please give what you can, and even a little because it takes a whole lotta littles to make a whole lotta lots!” We don’t have a huge corporate base in this

city, unlike many others in Canada, and the bulk of the money that goes to support public service work here comes from the pockets of the very people you walk beside on Jasper Avenue: employee programs, fun runs, bowling tournaments, donating your birthday money… the list of “littles” is endless. It all adds up quickly and effectively. Start a project in your office, and then hope that the business matches your donations. It’s a great template.

Rumour #2 – Most of our problems are centred in the downtown core.

Wrong. I learned so much during my time with the United Way. Yes, the downtown inner city has its unique problems, but there are also things we need to concern ourselves about in all four corners in the city—and those needs are wide and varied. Often these problems are temporary… so places that “give a hand up instead of a hand out” are the ones that make a huge difference. I was so impressed a few years back by a 17-year old mother at the Terra Group. She

was thrown out of her home in Riverbend by her parents because they were embarrassed that the girl had gotten pregnant. Terra was handling her custom education: You focus on what you are best at rather than a full curriculum because the rest of your day is made up of learning how to raise your young child. She was strong, positive and focused. The business guys in the session, including me, had our eyes well up with tears watching a very confident young lady ‘deal with it’ at a very tender age. The Youth Empowerment Support Service (YESS) has three locations in Edmonton where kids can spend a good deal of time getting advice and assistance from some very dedicated staff who are there when you need them. These aren’t bad kids. They’re kids from bad families and the stories are often heart breaking.

Rumour #3 – Public service agencies’ costs are too high!

Most agencies watch their costs very carefully and most of the big ones are monitored by the government, boards or accounting firms for financial accountability. Unfortunately, agencies too have costs of

operation: rent, power, phones, computers, employees, etc. If you’re concerned about costs, just ask them and I’m sure they’ll show you where the money is going. I can also assure you that most good agencies do not pay full fare for many of the things they buy simply because good corporate citizens in Edmonton give them a discount or break on normal retail costs. Finally, I can guarantee you that you will be affected by something in your life that will hit very close to home and that is usually the time that you decide to get involved in public service work. Personally, my daughter Rayanne has been fighting Graves Disease for the past two years. Throughout the entire ordeal of five different surgeries, her focus has been on chronicling the journey through a very positive blog she writes. It now has had close to 8,000 reads and she has heard compelling stories back from people who have read it from places as far away as Jakarta and London, England. It’s available at rayannesthoughts.blogspot. com if you’re interested. She is also writing a community connection column with the Edmonton Examiner. She proudly gives back

with these efforts. When you do get involved, know that the hours you put in to helping out a charity are just as important as the dollars you, or others, contribute. Do a once-a-year family project—like help out at Santas Anonymous—and reap the true meaning of both Christmas and “paying it forward.” Join a walk-a-thon… hold a garage sale and donate the profits… share good stories on public service events on your Facebook and Twitter sites. Spread the word wherever you can on good work in the community. When you do, I can absolutely guarantee you that you will meet real people, dedicated people, passionate people, committed people, and lifestyle-strong people who all realize that making life better for somebody else is the true reward of personal involvement in public service. And... you’ll feel darned good about yourself too! √ Marty Forbes is president of Radiowise Inc. Contact: marty@edmontonians.com – and on Twitter: mjforbes

You can change your health By Dr. Alysha Somji and Dr. Mélanie Robinson

T

he holidays are around

the corner and we can look forward to turkey, stuffing, eggnog, decadent desserts and plenty of red wine. Following these glutinous festivities comes a time of crash diets and renewal of long expired gym memberships. The beginning of a new year signals a time of change, a perfect opportunity for optimizing health and wellbeing. Many of the chronic health conditions predominant in society stem from improper nutrition and a sedentary, high-stress lifestyle. Many of us have been frustrated with the fixed number on the scale, even when we are actively trying to lose weight. It is important to consider that weight loss is not solely measured by a number. We must also consider that our body composition is changing as we strive to make healthy lifestyle modifications. What better time to commit to a customized therapeutic lifestyle program that is tailored to your own specific weight loss needs? This program is designed by two licensed Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) practicing in Edmonton. NDs receive a minimum of eight

years of post-secondary education. Four of those years take place at an accredited naturopathic educational institution, where the first two years are similar to allopathic medical training, and the last two years focus on Naturopathic treatment and modalities as well as clinical studies. Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct primary health care system that emphasizes a whole body approach. Therefore, this program will take into account each individual and his or her specific health needs. Individualized nutritional counseling is one of our core philosophies. An initial assessment is conducted on each patient, which includes a series of blood work, vitals, health history, and establishment of healthy weight goals. Evaluation of body composition will be a vital component of the program, as it will highlight important changes occurring in the body. Weekly sessions will include a different educational health topic as well as the assessment of each individual by one of the Naturopathic Doctors. These meetings will foster a group support atmosphere, which will promote greater weight loss outcomes. Research demonstrates that social support groups have

proven to be beneficial for maintaining a healthy weight. We also focus on stress reduction techniques and lifestyle coaching. Utilizing a multifaceted program structure promotes sustainable personal changes. Beyond the program, we will be offering monthly educational seminars, which will be open to the general public. This past summer, Naturopathic Medicine became regulated in Alberta; therefore, most extended health benefits can include Naturopathic services. More and more Albertans are choosing Naturopathic Doctors as their primary health care providers. Our program will support your individualized health and wellness needs while preventing your risk factors for chronic diseases. This is not just a weight loss program. It will encourage you to make choices that will enhance your quality of life and empower you to take charge of your own health. For program and seminar information, please refer to the Optimum Wellness Naturopathic Medical Clinic’s website at www. optimumwellnessclinic.ca Keep us in mind while you indulge during the holiday season. √

When your days aren’t so merry and bright… By Nancy J McCalder, RSW, Executive Director – Crisis Support Centre

C

hristmas is coming and

the goose may be getting fat but you are feeling lousy. No amount of “good cheer” helps and often makes you feel worse. Just getting up to work, school or out of bed each day is all you can muster… and some days you can’t even do that. Your friends and family call you Scrooge and chastise you about your Bah Hum Bug attitude. You ignore them and crawl away to be alone in your quiet corner. Does this sound like you or someone you care about? What you may be feeling or witnessing is depression. It is common around this time of year for many people. Depression is insidious and is a normal response to loss, grief and other life events that trigger a deep emotional response. It creeps up on you without realizing that something is wrong in your world. You might brush it off: “I am just tired” or “I need a break, I’ve been working too hard.” Even though that may be true, depression doesn’t go away with a break or rest from work or school. Depression feels like you are struggling to concentrate and looking at the world through a black cloud. Depression needs medical attention

in order for you to learn how to recover. Depression ranges from a dull blue feeling to major depressive episodes that may last a long time. If someone you know and care about is exhibiting signs of depression, talk to them about it! They might not know what is wrong. I had this experience with someone who knew something was wrong but not what. It took me suggesting he might be depressed and sharing my personal story that made the difference and he immediately sought help. For others, depression may start to worsen at this time of year because of an accumulation of losses. Especially if a loss has occurred over this past year, Christmas time can be a very difficult time. Memories of how you used to celebrate the holidays may haunt you and the grieving you thought was over starts all over again. We never truly “get over” major losses in our lives; we do learn to cope, and it is normal to be triggered again by special occasions such as Christmas. Depression is also scary. When someone is deeply depressed, we may feel like we are losing the person we love. We need to take the situation very seriously. Deep depression may lead to suicidal thoughts. For many, depression

feels like physical pain and they just want the pain to stop. That is when suicide may become a possible choice. I recently heard Bob Rae speak at the Canadian Suicide Association for Suicide Prevention. He commented “Regardless of the question… suicide is never the answer!” If you are worried about someone you care about the best way you can help them is ask the question: “Are you thinking of killing yourself?” or “Are you thinking of suicide?” If they say “No”, then they are not suicidal. If they say “Yes”, then they are suicidal and are at risk. Ask if they have a plan, the more detailed the higher the risk they will actually do something to harm themselves. If you have someone in your life that is at high risk, then call 911 or get them to the hospital. If you need more information and support… or you yourself are suffering and need someone to talk to, call the Distress Line 24/7 – 780.482.4357. Our volunteers and staff will be there 24/7 to listen and support you in a way that is meaningful for you. Calling the Distress Line can be the first step you make on your healing journey. √

simple and effective strategy to help you focus on the most important areas of your life each week: It’s my newest life balance tool, Your Pivot Point Strategy™. It’s based on a simple basketball concept: the pivot point. On the court, when you stop with the ball in hand you have 5 seconds to plan your next move: pass, shoot or “drive to the hole.” You protect the ball and pivot on one foot while you choose when and where to deliver the ball. In the game of life, one foot is anchored in what (and who) you value most so you keep your balance while you pivot (make incremental changes) each week in one or

Your Pivot Point Strategy ™ in the Game of Life more important areas of life: your physical, mental/intellectual and spiritual health, your family and social relationships, and your financial and career. No need to jump in with both feet nor get cold feet and get stuck in one place. You are making small incremental changes each week which take you toward your goals in a way that is sustainable over the long run. The benefits are numerous: a sense of accomplishment at the end of each week, the ability to quickly refocus on what you value most when life pulls you off track; consistently maintaining and improving your health; strong relationships with friends and family; steady progress in your career and financial health.

1. You’ll need Your Pivot Point Strategy Life Balance Wheel, shown on the previous page, Go to my website www.lynnfraser.ca for the electronic version of this column and print the template of the wheel. Or, draw your own, labelling each slice as indicated. At the top of your piece of paper, write “For the week of ___” and fill in the dates. I like to start with Monday and end with Sunday (January 7-13, 2013). Do what works best for you. It will take you 10-15 minutes on the weekend or first thing Monday to most effectively use this tool each week. 2. Rate out of 10, with 10 being the highest, your happiness with your life in each of your seven areas. Mark each line with a dot to indicate where you are at this moment in each of the seven areas. The dots closest to the centre represent the areas you may want to focus on this week. Take a few minutes to ponder this. 3. Now, answer the Start of Week Q: What Pivot Steps am I taking in the area(s) of my life do I choose to focus on this week? Set S.S.M.A.R.T. Goals: specific, simple, measurable, action-oriented, responsible, and time-based. These are the items I will do this week no matter what comes up to pull me off course! I recommend taking one step in one or two of the top areas in your life this week. Where do you find these small incremental steps? I pull them from my three- and six-month and oneyear goals on my business and life plan. I also pay attention to what’s happening in my life at this point in time. For example, my top three Pivot Steps that week could be: Physical Health: To get over my upper respiratory infection by going to bed by 10:30 p.m., taking my remedies and drinking lots of hot fluids. Financial: To contribute $50 to my RSP by January 11. Spiritual: Saying my “Five Gratefuls” at bedtime daily. These are the five people or events I am grateful for that day. Spiritual Health is sometimes a challenging area for people: If this is an area you haven’t paid much attention to, how about starting simply by saying your own “Five Gratefuls” at bedtime daily? Remember… These are the items you will do sometime during your EDMONTONIANS WINTER 2012

week, yet not necessarily every day. I refer to my weekly Pivot Steps (in my planner and on Outlook) when I make my Daily Prioritized Task List. I take one of my Pivot Steps and schedule it in as a Top Priority “A1” Task. Once I’ve achieved it, checking off my progress feels great! 4. Review and celebrate. When you chunk out that 10-15 minutes on the weekend or first thing Monday to plan your next week, also review your Q for the past week: What Pivot Steps did I take in the area(s) of my life I chose to focus on this week? Take time to celebrate your progress! Dark chocolate or a glass of red wine is what I reach for… how about you? Then start with a fresh sheet or download and print the template available at www.lynnfraser.ca and plan your two or three Pivot Steps for the next week. Each week will be different depending on what’s emerging as important for you. I recommend you stay on track with Your Pivot Point Strategy for a minimum of four weeks and then review your progress. Feel free to adjust the tool so it works better for you. I would love to hear how it’s working for you! “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” ~Aristotle Hot off the press: I have a brand new audio resource available for you: Your Pivot Point Strategy: Your Valuable Toolkit for Achieving Practical Life Balance. he iconic pallet, a humble

construction of wood joists and planks upon which most every object in the world at some time or another has been carried, could become an endangered species. Pallets are simple wooden skids used to transport goods from shore to ship. The invention of the forklift allowed the skiffs to be moved, stacked and stored pretty darn quickly. Combine that with the invention of the four-way pallet (a relatively small refinement that allows fork-lifts to pick up pallets in any direction), and productivity ballooned. Today, these ubiquitous cradles are rumoured to be circulating the global supply chain in the billions. Although wood pallets still dominate the global transport scene, plastic versions are growing in

popularity. As today’s focus on environmental issues grows, manufacturers are looking to recycled plastics to create synthetic cousins. These moulded platforms boast lighter weight, more durability, clean-ability, while offering colour branding options that their vulnerable splintering counterparts do not. Regardless, wood pallets remain a staple on loading docks and living rooms around the planet. Readily recycled, reused and reinvented, they have been repurposed into flooring, saunas, and even buildings. Pallet furniture has also been a popular alternative for eco-minded dwellers with a penchant for industrial furnishings. While many of these resurrections involve a complete transmutation, I prefer upcycled versions which do not alter the original integrity of the pallets, rather, they enhance it. Here are a few of my faves...

ngineering Prof lauded by students

Professor André McDonald has been chosen by the students of the UofA’s Department of Mechanical Engineering to receive this year’s Excellence in Teaching Award, in recognition of his dedication and outstanding teaching. “I am honored and humbled to receive this award,” said McDonald. “It shows the students understand and appreciate the efforts, dedication, and hard work I’ve committed to my teaching and to their professional development. “I find it exciting to teach and mentor students because I really do get a thrill from helping young future engineers learn the skills necessary for the profession,” he said. “It gives me great pleasure to know I am influencing their lives in a positive manner, and that they will be able to reap the rewards of my teaching efforts in a very short period after graduation. This is very exciting to me and truly inspires me to want to continue doing an excellent job of teaching.” McDonald said a cornerstone of his teaching philosophy involves looking ahead to his students’ future careers and the skills they will need to be excellent mechanical engineers. “While I believe in stressing the fundamental core concepts that form the basis of the courses I teach, I also believe in emphasizing, to a great extent, the practical applications of the subject matter,” he explained. “It is my core belief that students are motivated if they feel their courses are adequately preparing them for transition into industry or into graduate programs.” √

China is one of Waste RE-Solutions’ first clients, through a joint venture with Canfit Resource Recovery Technologies located in Beijing. “The Edmonton system that underlines this new initiative has strong potential in developing markets, like China, where there is clear desire to apply innovative solutions to waste management in a manner similar to Edmonton’s,” said Mayor Mandel. “Both Edmonton and its partner agencies are well positioned within this context and this is an important opportunity to boost Edmonton’s innovation and economic profile abroad.” Rosen said the establishment of Waste RESolutions, under the guidance of a board of directors, will ensure that the waste services provided locally will not be affected by this venture. “In fact, future profits of this company would provide a new source of revenue for our City and contribute to the financial sustainability of our leading waste management system.” Edmonton’s integrated waste management system will be used as a template for municipalities seeking similar sustainable systems, or components of Edmonton’s system. Waste RE-Solutions Edmonton will work with existing partners, Greys Paper Recycling Industries Ltd., Enerkem and GEEP Inc., and with other Alberta and Canadian companies in its global marketing efforts. √

Borders (EWB), whose membership includes several mechanical engineering students, has a goal of reducing extreme poverty by supporting initiatives in both Africa and Canada. EWB’s Vice President of Connections Rebecca Kresta, a mechanical engineering co-op student said, “EWB aims to empower specific sectors of African communities including agriculture, water and sanitation, business, and the government.” A key focus for the group involves empowering and investing in local people within their own communities. “EWB works with the people whose lives we aim to improve so that they have ownership over the change. “We work to shift the systems that impoverished people are fighting,” Kresta continued. “Working with the system and its stakeholders allows EWB to provide a more lasting change than simply providing infrastructure that may become neglected in the years after our involvement.” The club is currently involved in several Canada-based initiatives, which include advocating to the federal government for improved foreign policies, promoting fair trade and global engagement, supporting international development, and increasing global awareness of the engineering profession. According to Kresta, engineers possess unique skills that can truly make a difference for people in need. “I think all engineers make a difference in our world whether through solving hard technical problems that impact people worldwide or by acting as ambassadors for young people to learn more about the world around them.” √ Norman Leach, president of Norman Leach & Associates, is an Alberta-based business consultant, university lecturer and writer who works with companies and non-profit organizations to expand both their domestic and international markets.

LEGALLYSPEAKING

Copyright

with Ian L. Wachowicz

O

n July 12, 2012, the

Supreme Court of Canada released five significant decisions related to copyright law in Canada. These decisions brought clarity to a number of longstanding copyright issues and addressed many of the uncertainties associated with the everchanging technological landscape. Although these decisions originated out of discussions regarding tariffs and royalties, the Supreme Court of Canada seized upon an opportunity to elaborate on the various challenges facing copyright in the modern era.

THE FIVE CASES

In Entertainment Software Association v Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada, 2012 SCC 34, the Supreme Court of Canada was asked to consider whether downloading a video game from the Internet, which contained musical works, could be subject to an additional tariff for communicating those musical works to the public by telecommunication. Typically, royalties for the reproduction of the musical works contained in video games were negotiated before the video games were sold to the public, but the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers argued that when a video game is downloaded from the Internet, it should be subject to an additional fee. In the 5-4 majority decision, the Supreme Court of Canada held that allowing an additional tariff on downloadable video games would be in violation of the principle of technological neutrality. Because downloading a video game is not practically different from buying a hard copy in-store, the court held that the proper royalties for reproduction would have already been paid, and finding otherwise would impose a gratuitous cost for the use of more efficient, Internet-based technologies. As such, the Supreme Court of Canada stated that downloading video games did not amount to “communication to the public”, for the purposes of s.3(1)(f) of the Copyright Act. The analysis of s.3(1)(f) of the Copyright Act was taken one step further in Rogers Communications Inc et al v Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada, SCC 35. In particular, the question was asked whether music streamed online EDMONTONIANS WINTER 2012

clarified could ever constitute communication “to the public”, given that such streaming is really just a point-to-point transmission from one person to another. The Supreme Court of Canada noted that a point-to-point transmission must be assessed in a broader context, when determining whether the transmission constitutes “communication to the public”. In its analysis, the court cited Professor Vaver, who stated that, “[i]f the content is intentionally made available to anyone who wants to access it, it is treated as communicated ‘to the public,’ even if users access the work at different times and places.” The court ruled that where there is a series of repeated transmissions of the same work to different recipients, the work will be held to be “communicated to the public by telecommunication,” and will be subject to proper fees. A different aspect of the Copyright Act was analyzed in Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada v Bell Canada, 2012 SCC 36. In this decision, the Supreme Court of Canada was forced to consider whether online previews of musical works were considered fair dealings, pursuant to the research exceptions in the Copyright Act. Ultimately, the court decided that streaming previews between 30 and 90 seconds online was allowable for the purposes of research. Importantly, the Supreme Court of Canada disagreed that research had to be “creative”, and noted that it can be “piecemeal, informal, explanatory or confirmatory”. The court also noted that, “It can, in fact, be undertaken for no purpose except personal interest.” In its unanimous decision, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that previews help the consumer research prospective purchases, so they are properly construed as fair dealing in accordance with s.29 of the Copyright Act. There was no need to pay royalties on previews, given that royalties would be paid on actual purchases. The discussion regarding the liberal interpretation of fair dealing continued at length in Alberta (Education) v Canadian Copyright Licensing Agency (Access Copyright), 2012 SCC 37. This time, the Supreme Court of Canada was forced to determine whether photocopies of materials put together by teachers for their students could properly be construed under the fair dealing

and research exception of the Copyright Act. In its analysis, the Supreme Court of Canada held that to properly assess whether the dealing is fair, the dealing must be assessed from the user’s perspective. However, the court cautioned that when the copier appears to have an ulterior motive, the copier will not be able to shelter behind the user’s point of view. This situation could conceivably arise if a teacher used the materials to turn a personal profit. On the facts of this case, the teachers had no ulterior motive for creating the course packs, but were rather facilitating research and private study. The final case to be addressed by the Supreme Court of Canada dealt with the definition of “sound recording,” in the context of a soundtrack. In Re: Sound v Motion Picture Theatre Association of Canada, 2012 SCC 38, the Supreme Court of Canada noted that a sound recording that is part of a soundtrack cannot be subject to a tariff, when the soundtrack accompanies a cinematographic work. Section 2 of the Copyright Act defines sound recording and clearly excludes “any soundtrack of a cinematographic work where it accompanies the cinematographic work”. Thus, the court held that a “soundtrack” is a “sound recording”, except where it accompanies a motion picture. In these circumstances, the performers and makers of the sound recording were precluded from exercising their copyright and their remuneration right.

CONCLUSION

These decisions largely represent a win for the average consumer. They emphasize the importance of technological neutrality and users’ rights in the 21st Century. The liberal interpretation given to fair dealing shows that the Supreme Court of Canada is cognizant of the delicate balance between the public interest and preserving creators’ rights. Although it is too early to understand the full scope of what these decisions will mean to copyright law in Canada, it is reassuring to know that the courts are continuously giving these issues careful consideration. With the Copyright Modernization Act, set to come into effect in the near future, copyright law in Canada appears to be headed toward significant reform. ~Prepared by Jeffrey Wiedman

The “Bare” in the pair is Matt Day who pays homage to his clean shaven pate. The “von Hair” is his long-time friend, drummer Gord Graber who sports a ponytail. Whether they hit the stage in tuxedos—shoeless, with Matt in grey woollies and Gord in white

They’re more than stand-up comics: Both are accomplished musicians who have combined their talents to provide good, clean fun that is perfect for charity fundraisers and corporate get-togethers, suitable for mixed company of all ages. Day is described in testimonials as a “comedic genius” and a “phenomenal emcee” in relationship to both his Bare

Time and time again, clients praise his ability to customize/personalize/tailor material to reflect the culture of their organizations in such a way that they laugh at themselves. That special gift endears him to audiences. The research (covering everything from corporate language and vision to pet peeves) is time-consuming but its relevance is also rewarding—often leading to return engagements and referrals to other groups. Like many local musicians, Day is taking advantage of YouTube to give back to the community. “I provide free, entry level piano lessons to people all over the world. I even have used Skype to give live sessions to those who don’t have access or can’t afford teachers. It’s very gratifying.”

This year, Day wrapped up a 12-year run as a member of the Flextime Trio, the summer house band at the Jasper Park Lodge. “We lived on-site for four or five months,” says Day. “It was great to be back where I spent my adolescence.” He and his wife, Darlene, have four children aged 18, 15, 12 and 10. When asked what he would be if he weren’t a pianist/humourist, Day hesitates only a moment. “A helicopter pilot. When I was little—eight years old—a group of geologists came to my dad’s hotel. Every day, I watched them leave in the helicopter to go work in the mountains. Only four fit on each flight. There were seven geologists, so one of the trips had an empty seat. I waited and hoped. Finally, I was invited to go along. When we got back and went into the lobby, everyone gathered around the pilot… he was so cool.” Yes. Bobbi Windsor of TerraFrog Clothing Corporation, rubbed shoulders with some of televisions biggest stars in Hollywood in September. The sisters were invited to showcase their Winter 2013 sportswear collection at the Borgnine Emmy pre party. The exclusive celebrity event was hosted by producer Nancee Borgnine—the daughter of the late Oscarwinning actor, Ernest Borgnine. “When Nancee called and personally invited us, it was a bit surreal,” said Cori. “It was very exciting to have the opportunity to give

Hollywood trendsetters a sneak peak of the Winter line before the collection officially came out in October.” Attendees at the Borgnine party included cast members of Glee, The Office, Criminal Minds, Parenthood, Last Man Standing, Modern Family, and True Blood. Cori admits, “We were initially really nervous. It was scary putting ourselves and our clothing line out there. However, our fears quickly subsided when the celebrities made it very clear how much they liked our collection. They absolutely loved our cozy jackets made from recycled plastic bottles and our bamboo

The Art of Becoming Rich

H

ow often are you caught

in the bleak landscape of not-enoughness, feeling yourself poor and perhaps envious of those you consider well-off? What does it feel like when you are in that pattern? For me, it has felt pretty yucky. I’ve beaten myself up with a truckload of shoulda’s and coulda’s. I’ve been selfabsorbed and about as popular as the plague. The character of Joe Btfsplk from the satirical comic strip L’il Abner says it all: He’s the one with his own personal raincloud, ready, willing and able—always unintentionally—to spoil anybody’s day. (Pronounce “Btfsplk” by sticking your tongue out and blowing— commonly known as “the raspberry.”) Did you know that we actually carry something like Joe Btfsplk’s raincloud when we’re in the pattern of not-enoughness? We’re in our own box where we are right and others are generally wrong. I saw this years ago when teaching a powerful but simple forgiveness process that enabled people to get over their burden of unforgiveness toward themselves and others. Even in rooms of close to 100 people, participants could easily see physical changes in the person doing their forgiveness work, once they let go of the emotional charge on a perceived wrong. It was not unlike a cloud had lifted and real beauty shone through. When you’re in the box of “my way”, it looks like others could fix things for you by doing this or that. You stubbornly insist that they do what you would like them to do, having convinced yourself this will make everything all right. But hey, what’s EDMONTONIANS WINTER 2012

the dynamic of that? It’s you giving up your power to someone else by insisting you can’t be happy without them doing something. Hmmm. The way out of the box is... gratitude. Find what you appreciate in yourself and others whom you are currently judging and criticizing. Focus on that rather than on the deficiencies that loom so large from inside the box. When you’re genuinely grateful, your box dissolves and you’re reconnected with the larger world, no longer seeing it through the distortions of self-absorption. Your skies brighten. What’s the catch? Difficulty in feeling real gratitude may stem from an antagonism toward one or both parents. This puts you in an unnatural relationship with them: You become their judge and critic, instead of simply being their child. With this, you block the flow of love and gifts that come through your ancestry. Your sense of not-enoughness regarding your parents keeps you tied to them in an unhealthy way: “When a child complains to his parents ‘What you gave me wasn’t enough or it was the wrong thing, and you still owe me a lot,’ then the child can’t separate from them. These demands bind children to their parents in such a way that they can’t take anything. If they were to take their parents as they are, and also the good things that they gave, then their taking would dissolve their demand and make it seem foolish. As it is, they remain bound to their parents, and neither can separate. “Taking one’s parents has a strange effect— it separates. It’s not something done against

the parents, but something that completes and rounds out the relationship with them. Taking your parents means, ‘I take whatever you’ve given me. It’s a lot and it’s enough. Whatever else I need, I’ll take care of myself or get from someone else, and now I’ll leave you in peace.’ It means, ‘I take what I’ve been given, and although I may them leave my parents, I have my parents and my parents have me.’” ~ Bert Hellinger, German philosopher and psychotherapist Loves Hidden Symmetry p 104 Accepting life as it has come to you with all of its burdens and benefits opens and softens your heart. Your gratitude can now become real, unspoiled by any expectation of personal benefit. As you give, acknowledge and appreciate others out of fullness rather than need, you delight in being able to be of service to others. You see your money and your time as the little that they are and you grow rich as your warm open-heartedness touches others and inspires everyone. The way to riches is by giving from the heart… sharing with others and adding your brightness and warmth to all around you. √ Barbara Ashley Phillips coaches and facilitates the fabulous A Day to Enjoy for groups and organizations. If there’s one flicker of light as we make our way through this somewhat dreary time, it’s the upcoming get-togethers with friends and family. It’s party season and, this year, you’re sure to shine brightly with all the glitter on every element of fashion, from head to toe. I was pulling together a show the other day and I have to say I got pretty excited about what I saw in the stores for party fashion. Typically, we would have saved the intense glitter and glam for New Year’s Eve and chosen more classic styles. With so much sparkle to choose from in every store and for every budget, glam is sure to be a holiday party favourite and I love it. Texture is always a part of fall and winter dressing and, as it transitions to the holidays, it presents some pretty dynamic and elegant options. Mix it up with smooth and shiny fabrics,

or be daring and add a sparkling sequin jacket to almost anything. Unique textures like lace and brocade, as well as beading and rouching, add interest to an otherwise simple ensemble. Black is classic so, of course, it remains a staple for dressing up, but it does not have to be boring. Adding a splash of sparkle to a classic design is so simple this year with collar jewellery. This new trend from the world of accessories is so popular it’s hard to find them in the stores as they sell out so quickly. Generally inexpensive, collars with rhinestones, beads or colourful jewel-like detail are a way to add that touch of glam. When you’re shopping for holiday glam, know that you can wear it again after the holidays. Dresses can go from the dance floor to the office with the addition of a simply-cut solid coloured blazer. Shimmering lace or sequined pieces can be paired with jeans and a jacket for a night out with friends. As always, the best new pieces are not ones that are worn once and then sit in your closet, but ones you can wear again and again! This winter is the season for all that glitters. How much you add is up to you, but add it for sure! This holiday season, while you’re in Kingsway Mall, stop by the wrapping kiosk “Wrap and Roll’ and support the Edmonton Public Schools Foundation. Run by students, all proceeds are dedicated to the Foundation, which focuses on raising funds for full-day Kindergarten programming in school in socially vulnerable neighbourhoods. √ John Chwyl, the ‘Fashion Guy’ is the Director of Marketing for Kingsway Mall. Stepping into Characters Fine Dining is like entering a new world of tastes, with each visit being different than the last. By Paula E. Kirman

he menu, the atmosphere, and, well, the character of Characters was created by Chef Shonn Oborowsky. A native of Saint Albert, Chef Shonn began his culinary education at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology’s School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts. After apprenticing in a number of Edmonton kitchens, he travelled the world to work and study. In Switzerland, he finished his formal education at the Centre International de Glion. However, Chef Shonn’s approach to cuisine can be heavily credited to his time in Singapore where he was turned on to the flavours of Asian cuisine. Upon returning to Canada at the age of 26, he opened Characters. “I knew at an early age that all I wanted to do was have a restaurant,” he says. “I always wanted to have a high end restaurant, as I want to work with good local product. We always had a garden growing up and I strongly believe that if you start with a good product, you will end with a good product.” Characters’ menu is full of Chef Shonn’s cultural influences, infused with international flavours and the styles of Canadian continental, Asian, and French cooking. The menu is changed every season. There are no “specialties” as such, but guests will have their taste buds entertained in a variety of ways consistently due to Chef Shonn’s personal touch to the menu. “We don’t specialize in anything, but when I make the menus they reflect on how I am feeling Approved Corrections 2nd Proof while I ammaking them,” heWith explains. “We don’t follow - we startRequired them. You have to be a jack of all trades,” he explains. “I have done plumbing, tile, flooring, repairing lights and the dishwasher and always refrigeration. My dad taught me all of that as his dad did before. I still ask my dad questions today.” Another distinguishing feature of Characters are the different rooms. Besides the main dining area, you can join Chef Shonn and watch him at work at the Chef’s Table. Or, have a cozy, romantic time in a room constructed from an elevator shaft. Larger parties can reserve the “Room One” (a projector is even available for work-related meetings). A lot of thought has gone into the dining areas so that guests can enjoy an evening in Characters – an entire evening. “We only book a table once in a night. Once you book it it’s yours,” says Chef Shonn. “We like you here for at least two and a half to three hours. The food is all made to order. Nothing is made ahead of time, and the ambiance is earthy.” As for the future, Chef Shonn wants to keep doing what he loves here in the city. “Hopefully, I will be cooking for all the people that are going to the concerts and hockey games and enjoying a thriving downtown.”

Your Million Dollar Ticket –

F

A Sure Way to Win the Lottery orget the lottery.

You know it’s the worst possible investment one could make, yet, those few dollars spent each week in return for the “dream”, it couldn’t be all bad, could it? I’m a numbers geek, so let’s look at the odds: For each $2 ticket you purchase for Lotto 649, the odds of becoming a millionaire are approximately one in 14 million. Your odds are even worse for Lotto Max. For $5, you have a one in over 28 million chances of winning $15 million. Even if you bought 50 tickets a week, you’re only likely to win it once in 5,000 years.

You’re more likely to be bitten by a snake (one in 45,000 chances), or killed by lightening (one in 56,000 strikes). Let’s not even get into the number of lotto winners that are actually worse off financially after they won the jackpot. Yes, I said worse off than before their windfall. How is that possible? It’s like winning an office tower and placing it on the foundation of a humble home. You know it’s going to topple over. Self-made millionaires took time to construct a solid financial foundation and built their office tower or fortunes over years, decades or likely, an entire lifetime. They’re good at earning money, saving money, investing wisely, and protecting what

they have. Nothing sexy… but it works. You know the end of the story: Statistically, the turtle always wins. Here’s the hat trick to becoming a millionaire: The “Born Canadian” Lottery In Canada, the number of millionaires is on the rise, albeit more slowly than in Asia. There were 185,000 millionaires in Canada in 2011, up 14 percent from 162,000 two years earlier. That’s enough millionaires to rank Canada 20th in the world on the list of millionaire density. (Huffington Post June 2012) Consider how possible it is for you to achieve financial success if you so desire. And you can do that on Canadian soil easier than in many countries around the globe.

Also, don’t forget to factor in our subsidized health care. VERTISING PROOF over, and cook fabulous dinners. This festive season got us thinking that our homes really are like recipes: an amalgamation of several ingredients that compare and contrast with each other to eventually create a perfectly balanced and delicious dish. Each room should have a little spice, a little sweetness and a whole lot of yummy fabulousness! What Date: are the hottest décor ingredients to mix and blend into your rooms To Appear in: this upcoming year? Let’s start with the base-ics. One of the absolute sexiest décor ingredients will be upholstered feature walls. Yes… opt for wall-to-wall for a super dramatic and ultra-luxurious feel. We love the look of crushed tufted velvet with mirrored trimmings… crocodile stamped leather panels with metal nail head detailing… metallic grass cloth with wooden inlay patterns. Use any of these ingredients in a master bedroom for a super sensual feel, a dining room, or theatre room where the extra wall padding is welcomed to help absorb sound and offer visual depth and warmth. Next, add some laser-cut metals in the form of furniture or floor screens. This is the perfect way to add a touch of modern to a traditional floral pattern and some edge to an otherwise soft, feminine or classic room. Watch for this sharp material to explode in the design stores.

LED lighting is used in some capacity in almost every home we design these days. Nothing compares to the soft under-lit glow of LED under a counter top, a cabinet or even in a fish tank. We design acrylic furniture with LED rope lighting inside the frame so that the piece glows with a soft and alluring light. With color LED becoming so accessible, don’t be afraid to try a multi-hued LED source of light under library shelves or behind detailed wall panels in your living room or bedroom. An ingredient not to be missed is pearls which are making a huge comeback in both the fashion and home décor worlds.

Winter is the time of year people are planning their play-cation, vain-cation (medical tourism for plastic surgery), train-cation (for runners, yogis and fitness enthusiasts) and soulcations. Give a getaway any name! Many make it a staycation and spend that money on the home creating a cozy nest reminiscent of fave places. We see pictures of lavish places around the world online luring us with their Google-gasms. Think about the places dear to your heart. It could be farmland at harvest time with fields of golden wheat near an old red barn. The image you summon may be a luxury villa in the Maldives with enchanting crystal waters. Maybe it’s a Himalayan mountainside with ancient Chinese temples teetering on the edge. There are so many phantasmagorias to conjure up. The beauty is you needn’t travel for days, spend buckets of money or set your schedule upside down to bring it home through décor. Instantly inject life force into any room via living plants. Finding Your True Balance Looking Better

with Botox and Juvederm Fillers. Have you ever wondered what happened to all of those people who you went to high school with 20 years ago? You may never think of them much anymore until something like a reunion announces itself on the horizon. But the funny thing is that, even when you see some of your old friends on Facebook, often times you will picture them exactly as you remember them back in high school.

One myth surrounding Botox and Juvederm fillers is that they radically change how you look to others. In actual fact, the artful application of Botox and Juvederm restores your look to how people remembered you when you were younger— kind of how we always remember people the way they looked when we met them. A second myth surrounding Botox and Juvederm is that everyone will know that you’ve “had work done.” In reality, your friends and family will only notice that

you’ve been looking more rested lately, or wonder if you’ve just arrived back from an extended holiday. Botox done the right way will result in noticeable changes to you, but everyone else will quickly forget about the old tired and stressed out you… just like when you log off Facebook and picture your high school friends how they used to be. There are always stubborn things about our appearance that bother us and make us insecure. But at True Balance, we know that these things are easily treated. For instance,

One area he really wants to tackle is helping very early stage companies get access to capital. They still don’t have the traction to attract investors. “As a result of that, some very good ideas never really get off the ground because they can’t get the first $50,000 to build a prototype to demonstrate the potential to customers.” TEC Edmonton profiled six of its star performers in the 2011-12 annual report. These include Innovative Trauma Care, Metabolomic Technologies Inc, Drivewyze, SinoVeda, Nemsor, and a unique partnership with the Edmonton Waste Management Centre of Excellence. √

Award for Medical Devices at the 2012 Life Science and Health Care Ventures Summit in New York. Most recently, ITC picked up an ASTech award in the category for Outstanding Science and Technology Start-Up. Innovative Trauma Care has captured worldwide attention with its unique yet simple clamp that stops critical bleeding in seconds. This will boost the chances for survival by well over 80 percent. The clamp is the invention of military trauma surgeon Dr. Dennis Filips. The potential market is huge at almost a billion dollars a year. Along with help in developing a business plan and market analysis, he appreciates that “TEC Edmonton has experts in the regulatory side of things. They helped us prepare the documents to go to Health Canada and the U.S. FDA. This is expertise that we desperately need as a technology company.” SinoVeda also credits TEC Edmonton with their success in securing funding from agencies like NRC-IRAP and AVAC. √

determines the active ingredients in botanicals. This allows for standardization in nutraceuticals and could unlock the medicine chest of the Amazon Rain Forest. The company is about to launch EffectiCal, a new type of calcium supplement which has approval from NHPD, the Natural Health Products Directorate of Canada. And if a current clinical trial at NACTRC is successful, it could be elevated for use as a therapeutic medicine that reduces bone loss in osteoarthritis. Dr. Tam projects there is a potential global market of 200 million consumers for EffectiCal, so SinoVeda is negotiating with prospective partners in Latin America, India and Europe to help market the unique supplement. Also in the commercialization pipeline are botanical products to reduce cholesterol and the hormonal changes after menopause. SinoVeda is another company benefitting from the business development services offered by TEC Edmonton. Dr. Tam recognized early that, as pharmaceutical scientists, he and his wife knew very little about commercialization and drumming up business.

Revolutionize Transport Industry

You can’t miss the excitement in Heath’s voice when he talks about what DriveWyze has accomplished. “Our technologies were developed in-house, which is actually incredible. It’s amazing. Here we are, a company in Edmonton, in Alberta, and we have developed a technology that is so disruptive to the transportation services market it will have impacts around the world. It’s fantastic.” The market potential for Drivewyze is gigantic. Across North America, the way-station bypass service for trucks is over $600 million a year and the toll market is over $10 billion a year. While Intelligent Imaging Systems is a successful established company, it still needed help launching DriveWyze. Heath contracted the business development services of TEC Edmonton to advise on strategy, risk management, financial planning, and sourcing funds from NRC and venture capitalists. DriveWyze launched in August, 2012 with a strong foothold in the United States. Transport Canada is working with an American coalition to utilize Drivewyze. The business is growing so fast, Heath expects to double his staff yet again. √

ig trucks mean big business for

Brian Heath and DriveWyze, a new technology from Intelligent Imaging Systems. DriveWyze is a smart phone application for transport vehicles which streamlines the system for safety inspections, toll booths and border crossings. Reducing traffic congestion at these bottlenecks is critical to safety and the uninterrupted flow of commerce. Company president Heath explains that DriveWyze uses GPS and web-enabled technology to automatically upload driver information. This negates the need for individual transponders in vehicles and hardware like gantries, poles or meters at way-stations along the highway. All that saves money.
