Inhaler could stop flu pandemics

hen Dr. Malcolm King

started researching his idea for a new inhaler, he was looking for a way to prevent the spread of tuberculosis in remote northern Aboriginal communities. What he developed was something with even bigger potential. The new inhaler could be just what the world needs to stop the spread of global flu pandemics. Dr. King is the scientific director of the Institute of Aboriginal Peoples Health, an organization supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He’s also a professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta and a world renowned lung researcher. An Ojibway from Ontario, he has called Edmonton home for over 25 years. According to Dr. King, when a sick person coughs, fine droplets of germ laden mucous hang in the air, sometimes for hours, ready to be inhaled by anyone who passes by. That’s mainly how airborne diseases like tuberculosis and influenza are spread. But a drug in the inhaler that he has developed, in this case Dextran, changes how mucous behaves when its coughed out. Dr. King explains that, when people are showing symptoms of the flu, “they would take the drug by an inhaler and the properties of the mucous would change so that it would become a little bit more cohesive and less likely to form very fine droplets. Instead, they would form smaller numbers of larger droplets which are not nearly as dangerous because they settle out. So we want to take out those very fine droplets of aerosol from the equation.” Since the germ laden droplets settle out on surfaces, he says practicing regular hygiene

by hand washing takes care of the rest of the problem. This easy inhaler treatment would be particularly helpful in stopping the spread of influenza by sick people traveling on airplanes from one country to another. As well, it would offer greater protection for caregivers in hospitals and clinics during outbreaks. As for Dr. King’s first interest, the inhaler could overcome a major obstacle in treating tuberculosis. He considers the Inuit and First Nations people of Canada’s far north the most vulnerable to TB. “The fact that tuberculosis is even still with us in Canada is a concern. It’s a disease of poor social conditions… of poor housing… of poor nutrition… of overcrowding and so on. So it really has no place still existing in Canada. It’s not something that most Canadians are aware of, that it is a problem. In Nunavut in particular, in Inuit areas, the rates are just as bad as they are in many Third World countries.” Dr. King offers this prescription: “Certainly a lot of it would go away if we were able to improve the housing and reduce poverty in those northern Aboriginal communities. It’s also a case of education and failure to communicate well between health providers and community people. There’s a long history of distrust. People were taken from their homes with tuberculosis in historical times, in the times of people’s grandparents now and many never came back. So there’s still a lot of distrust in those northern communities that needs to be overcome.” Dr. King first started the project with a colleague from El Salvador where TB is also still a problem. Because it takes several weeks to actually diagnose TB, the two researchers were looking for a way to prevent the spread of infection during the period when the investigation was underway. He says, “The people who get infected by TB are usually close family members, generally children who are infected by an adult (in the home) who turns out to have TB.” The inhaler developed by Dr. King would provide a relatively inexpensive and easy-touse treatment once it is on the market. This could be another three to five years as final testing and refinements are made. Protein therapy good news

for heart research

tatistics show that, in Canada,

someone dies every seven minutes from heart disease or stroke. Dr. Zamaneh Kassiri, a physiologist at the University of Alberta, hopes her research with proteins will change those grim statistics. She explains, “What we have found is that these molecules… called TIMPS (tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases)… are inhibitors of a group of enzymes that are matrix metalloproteinases or MMPs that degrade the network that holds the heart muscles together. And, by degrading this network, the heart starts to expand and becomes larger… therefore the contraction of these single cells is not translated into a whole unit pumping function of the heart as it should. So what we are thinking is that, at the very early stages of the heart attack disease, if we can replenish the heart with this protein, maybe we can prevent the progression of the heart restructuring and the dysfunction.” In her current experiments with mice, Dr. Kassiri is injecting the good TIMPS proteins directly into the heart muscle to encourage its repair. WATER CAPPING: A new solution to tailings dilemma

hen it comes to oilsands

production, toxic tailings ponds could one day just be a bad memory. Instead, you’ll find in their place fully functioning lakes. That’s certainly the hope of Syncrude Canada as it develops a new technology called water cap tailings. After conducting several small pilot projects over the last 20 years, Syncrude is now embarking on a commercial size demonstration project of water cap tailings technology as it reclaims the Base Mine pit near Fort McMurray. Leading the Base Mine Lake Project is Samantha Tavener. She explains that the term tailings refers to what is leftover when bitumen is processed. “We use water to extract oil from the sand, and at the tail end of the process we get clays, fines and some un-recovered bitumen. The clays hold onto some water. So we put the tailings in a mine out pit. Then we put water over top of it. And that’s the water cap tailings project.” Success first in the lab and then with small ponds in the field gives Syncrude confidence it can turn the old Base Mine pit into a viable aquatic environment. The project will begin with a cap of five metres of water that over time will increase to 15 metres at material settles. Tavener says, “That five metre cap is the water depth that we need to make sure that the clays and the fines are not re-suspended.” Of course, to be viable lake, the water must support life. Tavener points out, “Research on the small scale test ponds has also shown us that as plants grow and as the bugs grow and then die, they end up making a layer which we call a detrital layer on the bottom. That helps to make sure that if the sediment re-suspends, the organisms just use it up. It’s part of the natural lake system. “In addition, some of the other research from other industries shows that you can have a little pile of rocks, sort of an underwater berm. Basically that makes sure that your shallow water zone, which we call a litoral zone, doesn’t get disturbed. It allows the plants and the bugs to establish without having too much wave energy to knock their houses down.” It’s these plants, bugs and microorganisms that form the base food chain that should one day support fish and waterfowl at Base Mine Lake. ince the late 1990s, thanks to anti-retroviral therapy, having HIV is no longer an automatic death sentence. But statistics show that neurologic disease remains a major concern for patients with HIV and AIDS. Its occurrence ranges from 25 percent in HIV patients to 40 percent in those suffering from AIDS. Still worse, its presence increases the risk of death. That’s the conclusion of a 10-year study which gathered data from every patient at the Southern Alberta Clinic at the University of Calgary. The study was published recently in the journal Neurology. Dr. Chris Power is one of the study’s coinvestigators. He also holds a Canada Research Chair in Neurological Infection and Immunity at the University of Alberta. He says brain disorders in HIV and AIDS patients are often ignored, generally because these the patients are suffering from so many other overwhelming medical disorders. But left untreated, neurological diseases such as dementia or peripheral neuropathy, a painful disorder that affects the hands and feet, significantly reduces the patient’s ability to work or to live independently. According to Dr. Power, “It raises the question about how effective the anti-retroviral therapy we have is. In other words, is it truly getting into the brain and controlling the retroviral replication in the brain? Right now, we know that in general these drugs we use for treating HIV infection don’t get into the brain terribly well. So we need to first identify which drugs are the best and, secondly, can we alter how we deliver them to patients, such that we can reduce the risk of neurologic disease?” Dr. Power suggests the presence of neurologic disorders could be another marker of the progression HIV or AIDS in the patient and, since these disorders are linked to an increased risk of death, he urges caregivers should be more vigilant. His group is now investigating in the lab which drugs are most effective at controlling the AIDS virus in the brain. They also hope they can develop a vaccine. The awards will support 37 investigators at the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary, and for most, the funding goes for seven years. Dr. Jacques Magnan, CEO of Health Solutions, outlines some of the research projects. “For example, at the University of Calgary there’s a project where Dr. Paul Kubes is working on sepsis. And essentially, he’s a basic scientist who looks at the processes of inflammation in sepsis. There are people working on osteoporosis from a biomedical engineering perspective… trying to get a sense of how to measure better not only the bone density but the quality of the material in the bone. “I’m home schooled, which isn’t as social as one would think,” she says jokingly. “I was looking for a place to meet friends, so I went to a Saturday night dance by myself, and have continued to come back ever since!” While Birkley celebrates the dances, music and spirit of the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s, his number one priority is building community in Edmonton. “It’s important for me to help satisfy the people who come to Sugar Swing, either just once or continually. Part of that is providing great events, good music, excellent instruction and fun classes. Drawing people together with common goals to create a warm, welcoming, happy environment is really what I do. “To meet these ends and grow our community of dancers, there are a few things I have my eye on. charity

don’t think there is any other city in Canada that can match the generosity of Edmontonians who donate millions every year to worthwhile charities— most of which are promoted in this 2011 Social Calendar issue of Edmontonians. I am so proud, in some small way, to play a part by auctioning off my services for gourmet brunches and dinners cooked in the successful bidders’ homes. Since 1975, I’ve cooked in everything from a galley kitchen that uncomfortably fit two with no room to spare… to the prestigious main kitchen at Jasper Park Lodge. We’ve BBQ’d at 7,000 feet in an alpine meadow, served a three course gourmet duck dinner on the shores of Big Lake—complete with fine linen, candelabra, silverware and china plates. We’ve done a pig roast for our Good Shepherd Anglican Parish, and too many lobster feasts to mention. None of these feasts would have been possible without the generous people who put their hands up to bid on these meals. One of the first fundraising dinner auctions was put on by Ducks Unlimited in 1937. DU wrote the handbook on what has become a $40-million (give or take a few million) fundraising venture across Canada annually. That formula has been utilized by countless charities year after year. A good example of this is the Black Tie Bingo, held at The Westin in support of the Edmonton Rodeo Cowboy’s Benevolent Foundation. Unlike other professional athletes, cowboys are not covered by insurance should they be injured or, worse, disabled. The evening includes live and silent auctions, raffles, special draws and, yes, six games of bingo, with incredible prizes. The culinary team at The Westin did an incredible job with mapleroasted root vegetable soup with crispy carrot chips, cranberry sorbet, AAA beef tenderloin with mushrooms and a merlot au jus, twice baked potatoes, and seasonal vegetables. Dessert topped everything off: Tiramisu in a rock glass with a chocolate cigar and

Speaking of food, I put up a gourmet dinner for eight, cooked in the comfort of the winning bidder’s home, served by the talented and gorgeous Jenny Marshall. Food will be supplied by Northlands, a bottle of wine with each course will come from Sherbrooke Liquor Store, and dessert will be courtesy of Dutch Delicious. It doesn’t happen very often, but sometimes top bidders want the meal so badly that, after it’s sold, the person with the lower bid will offer to pay the closing price for a second meal. Northlands jumped at the chance, as did Jenny and I… so our meals went for $4100.00.

A lot of smaller organizations choose to run much scaled-down affairs. Take, for example, St. Matthews Anglican Parish in St Albert. They decided to raise money to help pay for the addition to their building as well as donate money to a local charity, The Bridge Fund. In fact, 25 churches in the area decided to band together to help families in crisis. St. Albert Mayor Nolan Crouse acted as auctioneer. It was a Hallowe’en wine and cheese Laura Gadowsky, chair of Edmonton affair. For the past five years, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of being on the esteemed panel of judges for the Nina Haggerty Cake Walk at The Sutton Place Hotel. This annual fundraiser enables people with developmental disabilities to explore their creative potential. Classes in art, movement, virtually every medium are offered in either therapeutic or recreational environments. In eight years, the studio has grown from one artist to a collective of more 135 artists. Today a new Nina Haggerty Gallery at 9225118th Avenue is part of the arts based revitalization of the community. This gala combines live entertainment, this year featuring Guys in Disguise—aka Lady Gaga, Judy Garland, Pink, Julie Andrews, Barbra Streisand, Cher, Reba and Annie Lennox—a silent

auction and, of course, a cake competition. The theme was “Diva Divo-The Cake Walk Goes Gaga” Each pastry chef/baker is paired up with a sponsor and together they come up with a creation. Every year the bar is raised a little bit higher and judging has become increasingly challenging. We tally the marks and hand out the accolades. This year’s winner was Team Lexus with Bruce Kirkland and Gloria and Guenter Hess of the Art of Cake. So pick out your charities from this issue and give them your support! √

fter 50 years of providing safe, affordable accommodation and services to senior citizens, the Greater Edmonton Foundation launched a community fundraising campaign in 2008 to build more affordable housing for low to medium income Attention: seniors. Rents, just like utilities, go up every year and seniors are often finding themselves sandwiched in with their own aging children and grandchildren. And, with growing wait lists of more than 500

people, the Foundation desperately needs to build new residences to meet the demands of an aging population. The Foundation’s immediate goal is to raise enough money for the construction of two new apartments. Rosslyn Terrace is already under construction and will be open Date: in late 2011. Polyethylene terephthalate—aka PET—bottles or single-use water bottles are ending up in our landfills to the tune of 100 million bottles yearly. Wait, it gets ‘better’: PET’s can take anyway from 500 to 1,000 years to decompose, and can emit enough greenhouse gases to trigger another Ice Age. Those are the cold hard facts. More than 60 percent of landfilled waste could be either reused or recycled. While some argue that hectic schedules prevent them from practising the three Rs, recycling generally only requires a few moments a day. Untreated hearing loss affects relationships, earning potential

ny happily married couple will typically list “communication” as one of the keys to a successful marriage. If one or both partners have untreated hearing loss (ie, choosing not to wear hearing aids), communication is more difficult. Everyday conversations with friends and family are more difficult for those with untreated hearing loss, and they often feel left out or ignored in social situations. A U.S. survey of baby boomers carried out in 2007 by Energizer Battery Inc., indicated that nearly half (48 percent) for those surveyed said their marriages have suffered because of their spouse’s hearing loss. In marriages where one spouse has an untreated hearing loss, the other partner suffers as well. They tend to feel annoyed, ignored and frustrated, especially when their spouse denies they have a hearing problem. Those with hearing loss tend to avoid social situations with others, watching television, or talking on the telephone. Miscommunication can be a source of stress and lead to arguments as both partners may feel frustrated, isolated, lonely and depressed. Research conducted by the Better Hearing Institute shows that Americans who ignore their hearing problems are losing at least $100 billion a year in earnings. The average income lost by working people who have untreated hearing loss ranges from $1,000 to $12,000 a year (depending up on the severity of hearing loss). Even with a mild hearing loss, you may miss a consonant or word being spoken and not catch the latest news in the break room or the

However, research has also revealed that, on average, the loss in income is cut in half for those who wear hearing aids. Many people are still worried about appearing old or incompetent when wearing hearing aids, but the reality is you may appear out of touch or not as intelligent because you are not able to hear very well, which is much more noticeable than a hearing aid. Hearing loss should not be treated as a minor or slightly irritating problem that can be safely ignored. When left untreated, problems can disrupt family life and emotional and sexual intimacy, and increase the likelihood of depression or other psychological problems. Treating your hearing loss (typically done by wearing hearing aids) can improve your quality of life by allowing you to interact socially and emotionally with those around you. Treating hearing loss with hearing aids can improve your earning power, safety, emotional stability, sense of control, self-perception, and overall quality of life. Yet only about a quarter of people who need and could benefit from hearing aids use them. A major barrier toward using amplification for many with hearing loss is cost and lack of understanding behind what affects the cost. Hearing aids contain tiny digital technology, consisting of circuit boards, sound amplification, automation, and safety, with the ability to “tune” the settings to your specific hearing needs. Costs include: research and development, manufacturing, assessment (to determine your

needs), customization of each hearing aid by a professional, time spent with the hearing professional during the fitting and follow-up, fittings and adjustments (typically included in the price of the hearing aid). Also influencing costs are loss, damage and repair warranties (typically included in the first one to two years following purchase), and geographical location. As well, it is better to have balanced hearing in both ears than improved hearing in only one hear. Technology advancements in today’s hearing aids include features that improve sound quality, wearing comfort and user experience, with more automation and cosmetic features. Tiger... what does he owe us?

t 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time, on Friday February 19th, 2010, the majority of global television networks ground to a halt to carry live a press conference. This conference was not about an impending major world event or catastrophe… nor was it about the announcement of a new cure for AIDS or cancer… nor was it about an innovative approach to solve the global economic crisis, or reduce global conflict or eliminate global poverty. Sadly global media will never stop for any of these. It was about a golfer making his first public comment to apologize for his adulterous behaviour. There have been other athletes who have seen their day in the spotlight … Pete Rose for gambling, Barry Bonds and Mark McGuire for steroids, Kobe Bryant being investigated for rape, Magic Johnson when infected with AIDS, and many others. While these athletes were some of the best in the sports they played, none of these events took on the global nature of coverage that the Tiger Woods saga has and continues to have. The challenge, when discussing Tiger, is that one gets straight into the moral question of his behaviour or his responsibility to society as a role model. While both questions are interesting, there has been a lot written about these and I look to another “role model” for a response to these questions. Charles Barkley was once questioned about his off court behaviour and its impact on children that come to watch him. His response was, “The fact that I can dribble the basketball does not mean I will raise your children. That is the responsibility of the parents”. The focus of this article is to look at the media fascination and handling of this entire Tiger issue. Most reporters, especially sports reporters who cover golf, consider themselves morally superior to the masses that listen or view their

programming. Interestingly, when the story first broke, there was a flurry of activity as reporters attempted to dig deeper into what happened. The pundits—not satisfied with the dirt that they had dug up, not able to confirm that Tiger was attacked by his wife with a golf club— quickly moved to their secondary focus. This focus had two parts: hound current players for comments on Tiger so, if one were to slip up with a negative comment, they could then take this player to task. Indeed, they succeeded with a few, but the majority of players to their credit stayed above the mess and focused on their game. The second part, and perhaps more intriguing, was the discussion on what does Tiger owe the media, his fans and the public. Subsequent to the initial press conference, every time Tiger spoke, the analysis by the media was the same. He needs to come out clean and give us all the details… an expectation that is validated by the suggestion that the fans (and the media and the public) have afforded him the lifestyle and profile that he holds and thus deserve to know the details. Is that a real expectation? And what does he really owe anybody? When you look at the rise in popularity of the game globally, it is a fact that Tiger has been for the most part a significant reason for that. With a 24-hour golf channel, global coverage of events and the significant dollars that are now part of the game, Tiger has and continues to be the main ingredient. So one has to question why the media, especially the folks from the golf channel, continue to keep the focus on what is wrong with Tiger. While other contenders (or pretenders) continue to falter, there is little if anything negative written about them or their games. The new number one player in the world (Lee Westwood) got the honour, not because of winning anything recently but because Tiger had not won in a while. That alone is a sad state of affairs

for the game. Should Tiger decide to retire prematurely (as Lorena Ochoa did), it would have a disastrous effect on the financial aspects of the game. In addition to the players, the media that follow and report on golf, which has grown substantially over the past few years, will see a significant financial impact, especially in North America. Coupled with recent statements by European golfers to play less in North America, the media here has a lot to lose. So why, you ask, do they continue to harass Tiger? Well, they are losing sight of the goose that is laying the golden egg! So what should anyone’s expectation of Tiger be? When Tiger first came back to play, in his press conference, he apologized to his fellow players for the distraction he had caused and for them having to respond to questions about him, and hoped that the media would now ask him those questions and leave other players alone. Immediately after the conference, one of the reporters cornered Phil Mickelson (then the number two golfer behind Tiger) for a comment on Tiger’s apology to his fellow players. Phil, who was reported to have not had a good relationship with Tiger, responded, “Tiger has nothing to apologize for. What he has done for this game, and what I and others have personally benefited because of him, he does not owe me anything.” Perhaps the media should take the clue from Phil. At the recent Ryder Cup, someone from the media asked Tiger what he was feeling now that he had gone from one of the best golfers in the world to one of the worst. Tiger response (paraphrased) was he could still beat the questioner… until another day. √ Nizar J.
