WHEN PIGS FLY:
AGILITY SUCCESS with “IMPOSSIBLE” DOGS by JANE KILLION
If you were nodding your head when you read the above paragraph, then you and I are kindred spirits. I have two passions in life – Bull Terriers and agility. Unfortunately, about the only thing that you can count on from an untrained Bull Terrier is that, the instant you take off the leash, he will run away from you, as far as he can, as fast as he can. This does make it challenging to train them in agility, and no one would have blamed me if I had given up when I discovered this un-encouraging trait. I did not give up, however, because I loved my dogs and saw something in them that told me they were just as smart and capable as their more obedient classmates, if only I could figure out how to get through to them. I stuck with it, soaked up everything I could about dog behavior and dog training, and eventually earned the unimaginable pleasure of putting agility titles on my own little varmints. I am going to present a series of training articles that show you how to teach your “impossible” dog to do agility. Much of the agility advice you will receive from top instructors will deal with shaving seconds off your dog’s time, or teaching you the best handling system to maximize your dog’s performance. Friends, that stuff just isn’t so helpful when your you’re watching Cherry’s original mission in life was to run away from me, but she eventually learned to jump through hoops for me, instead! © Kenneth Reed Photography

E Boston Terriers | www.ebostonterriers.com
For this first article, I have adapted a piece from my book, “When Pigs Fly: Training Success With Impossible Dogs.” We will examine what makes a dog challenging to train and present the case in favor of the “impossible” dog. I want to encourage you to look at the positive points of your dog’s personality and understand that, given the right approach, your dog might not be so impossible as you think he is!
YOU CAN DO AGILITY WITH YOUR DOG!
The Impossible Dream
Consider the following descriptions of three successful performance dogs. Do any of them resemble your dog? Dog number one is “The Bolter.” She attends basic obedience class. With one leash correction, she slows down. If the correction is repeated, she stops. If a third try is hazarded, she sits down like a mule and patently refuses to move. When off leash, however, this dog has no trouble moving very rapidly. Unfortunately, she is generally moving very rapidly in the wrong direction. She does not give a rat’s behind about what her handler wants her to do. It takes a great deal of
Have you been to obedience or agility class and been humiliated by how inattentive and wild your dog was? Do you really want to do agility with your dog that you already own and love, but feel like you are getting nowhere and no one knows how to help you? Has it been suggested to you that you should just switch breeds or trade in your dog for a more compliant model? Don’t hand over the leash, just yet.
there is hope.
your dog jump out of the ring and run off so fast that there is a little cloud of dust behind him. What does it matter which cross you put where, if your dog’s nose is glued to the ground at the startline? What do you care about techniques to teach your dog three-second weave poles, when your dog won’t even go in the same quadrant of the ring as the weave poles? Make no mistake, the handling techniques those top trainers outline generally are brilliant, but you and your dog need to do some background work before those handling techniques have any relevance to you. The purpose of my articles will be to help you learn how to train the things you need but won’t get from most training resources.
Dog Number One
Do you have a dog or a breed of dog that is not predisposed to work with you?
The Maniac
Nicky could not even go for walks for fear he might hyperventilate and pass out, but with the Pigs Fly training system he was able to overcome his problems. Here he is, flying to his first agility title. © Kenneth Reed Photography
sweaty, frustrating, effort just to capture her after she runs off. Sometimes she actually has to be tackled.
Dog Number Two
Dog number two is “The Maniac.” He is so highly excitable that his heart literally beats out of control when he is in public. He has to be on beta-blocker medication to (in the words of his vet) “keep him from keeling over.” Even a walk down the street is out of the question. Any time he meets a strange person or dog his heart races, his tongue turns black, and he collapses on the ground. Sometimes his excitement is so great that he vomits and loses control of his bowels. One time he became so over stimulated by a visit from a neighbor that veterinary intervention was required to save his life.
Dog Number Three
Dog number three is “The Dud.” She carefully and precisely follows her handler around – at a walk. Toys, food, praise, and handler gyrations bring absolutely no change in her pace. She has two speeds – dead slow or stopped. After reading these descriptions, you may find yourself re-reading my first sentence. “Did she say successful performance dogs?” Yes, I did. These are my Bull Ter-

your dominion and that was the way it went on Lassie? Dream on. Because you are capable of giving him the doggie equivalent of a trip to the French Rivera if he does what you want? Now, your talkin’.
The Dud break out of a walk. Your dog, no matter what his breed or type, loves to learn and can be taught to do agility. I have never met a dog that did not like training and learning new things. Pick the dog you love first, and I will show you how to have lots of fun running agility with him.
Here is Ruby, who would almost never break out of a walk when she was a young dog, tearing through the weave poles. With the right training, Ruby went from “Dud” to “Dynamic!” © Kenneth Reed Photography
riers, and they all have gone on to great performance careers. “The Bolter” is Cherry. Shortly after I figured out how to train her, she achieved nine agility titles, with twenty-four first place finishes. Not bad for a dog that previously spent most of her time figuring out how to run away from me. “The Maniac” is Nicky, who earned his first leg toward an American Kennel Club obedience title at the Bull Terrier Club of America’s National Specialty, going High in Trial. Shortly after that, he completed his AKC Novice Agility Preferred title. That’s a long way from a dog who could not even go out on a leash walk in the neighborhood for fear of dropping dead from the excitement. “The Dud” is Ruby who, at eighteen months, completed three agility titles. She ran respectably quickly and was as much as 10 seconds under time. Oh, by the way, she was also Winners Bitch at The Bull Terrier Club of America National Specialty that month. In order to beat out the other dogs she had to show like a house on fire for about two hours, and she did. I’d say these are remarkable accomplishments for a dog that would almost never
Are you thinking, “Yeah, but my dog is too hard to train”? I sympathize with people who insist that their dog is too difficult, too stubborn, too slow, or too hyper to train, but I can’t agree with them. As you can see from the stories of my own dogs, I have faced and dealt with all of those issues The only problem that I see is that most people need a better understanding of how dogs learn and how to teach them.
So, what’s the point?
Your dog, no matter what his breed or type, loves to learn and can be taught to do agility. I have never met a dog that did not like training and learning new things. Pick the dog you love first, and I will show you how to have lots of fun running agility with him.
WHY DOES MY DOG SEEM HARD TO TRAIN? The Nature of the Pigs Fly Kinda Dog
Let’s talk about the term “difficult to train.” When we say a dog is difficult to train, part of what we really mean is that the dog is not biddable. Biddable means willing to do your bidding, just because you ask. Biddability is something that has been selectively bred into certain breeds that need to work closely with humans. Herding breeds need to respond to the shepherd’s commands. Gun dogs need to work as a team with the hunter. Terriers need to think on
BIDDABLE: willing to carry out the wishes of others: amenable, compliant, conformable, docile, obedient, submissive, supple, tractable (Roget’s II: The New Thesaurus, Third Edition 1995). These are qualities that have been highly prized by breeders of working dogs throughout the centuries. Careful breeding over thousands of years has cultivated dogs that have an inclination to both work with and take direction from man. If you are reading this book, you probably do not have one of those dogs. If you laughed when you read the definition of biddable you definitely do not have one of those dogs. their own to outsmart and kill vermin…hmm. Sounds like we bred independent thinking instead of biddability into that group.
PIG-TIONARY
Before you throw up your hands and say, “Well, there it is. My dog is genetically programmed to ignore me,” consider this: If you were comfortably at home watching TV, and your spouse said, “Go upstairs and pack your suitcase” you would probably say “Why?” If he or she answered, “Because I say so,” you might or might not actually pack your bag, and you would probably be a little resentful about being ordered around that way. Most people would want the courtesy of an explanation. Even if you did pack your bag, you would do so reluctantly. If, instead of, “Because I say so,” he or she said, “We just won the lottery and to celebrate we are going to the French Rivera!” you’d run upstairs right away and pack, wouldn’t you? Well, non-biddable dogs think the same way that you do. Biddable dogs would not ask “why?” if they were told to go upstairs and pack their bags, but non-biddable dogs would need more information before they made their choices about whether or not to comply with your request. Biddability, then, can be defined as removing the “Why?” from the dog’s psyche. The biddable dog never asks why, he just does what you are asking. So, is it such a big deal if we just have to answer the question “Why?” Why should he sit/stay/walk on loose leash etc? Because you are his master and he is within
E Boston Terriers | www.ebostonterriers.com
Although lack of biddability is part of what makes your dog different from “easy” breeds, there is more to it than that. Your dog is the dog who asks the questions. He acts like he is deaf when you call him, but he could figure out how to escape from a high security penitentiary if there was something he wanted on the outside. He’s probably inquisitive and on fire to explore the world - always scheming, but never scheming to figure out what you want. While he appears to have no interest in doing anything you want him to do, he is almost obsessive about performing tasks of his own choosing, like chasing squirrels, sniffing, or tearing apart upholstered furniture. Although he is affectionate, his agenda does not include doing anything to please you. Far from seeking your approval, at times he seems like he revels in the chaos that his disruptive behavior creates – sometimes you have a sneaking suspicion that he thinks it’s funny when you get angry. How do you describe a dog like that in one word or phrase? Independent? Stubborn? Hard to Train? Challenging? Obsessive? Stupid? Intelligent? These are all valueladen terms that pass judgment on the dog, his attributes, and what he should or should not be able to do. They invite us to draw negative conclusions about the dog because of lack of understanding of dogs and how they think. I don’t believe that using those kinds of words or phrases to describe your dog will further your goal of becoming a happy team with your canine companion. I frequently use the term “Pigs Fly dog” as shorthand for a dog with all of the fabulous (yes, fabulous) qualities I described above. I like “Pigs Fly” because, although these dogs sometimes seem impossible to deal with, in fact they are trainable, even brilliantly trainable. I also use the term non-biddable because, although it is a more limited term, it is an accurate description of the nature of these dogs and cuts to the core of why people have trouble training them. Sometimes I will even use the terms “difficult to train,” “hard to train,” and the like, but they should be taken with a grain of salt. The number one rule for success is to pick out your dog’s strengths and work them to your advantage. I think that it is important you think of your dog in terms of all of his wonderful attributes, and not get caught up in any pre-judgement about what he can or can’t do. Taking away neg-
ative labels and the stigma that goes with them is the first step in opening your mind to the potential in your dog. Any kind of dog may fall under the Pigs Fly umbrella – purebreds and mixed breeds alike. When I talk about “Border Collies” or “Terriers” or any other breed or group of dog, it is just shorthand for a dog that shares those characteristics, mixed or purebred, with or without papers. Most of the Terrier and Hound groups can be classified as Pigs Fly dogs, but there are plenty of other breeds/mixes that can be Pigs Fly dogs, too. Generally, any dog whose original purpose was to perform a task independently, without taking direction from, or being in cooperation with, a human teammate is going to be a Pigs Fly kinda dog. If you are in doubt as to your dog’s heritage, but you can’t seem to get him to go along with your plans, he is in the Pigs Fly club. I spend a lot of time mentoring new Bull Terrier owners. Time and time again, I hear stories about the frustration and discouragement they experience when they go to training classes with their dog. Seems like a lot of instructors don’t want to be bothered with dogs that are not “easy” to train. Some instructors flat out recommend getting another breed. To me, this is just terrible. My dogs had three very different types of problems, but we worked through them, and the joy that I get every time we train or compete is beyond measure. The real reward for me was achieving things and having fun with the dogs that I already loved. I want to make that reward available to anyone who desires it. Far from wanting an “easy” dog, I love my busy terriers whose brains are turning so fast that you can hear the whirling and clicking. I make no apologies for owning a fabulous little dog that is always on the go and obsessed with living life to the hilt, and you should not be making any apologies, either. There is a gold mine of possibilities waiting inside of your Pigs Fly kinda dog and I am going to show you how to find it.
Books, 2006). It contains brief descriptions and histories for the breeds of dog recognized by the AKC and one has to be amazed at how we have bred so many breeds of dogs for so many specialized tasks. There are dogs that herd livestock by driving them from behind, and there are dogs that tend livestock by heading them off. There are dogs that will go and fetch a bird without putting a single mark on it, and there are dogs that will destroy any small animal they can find. There are dogs that will diligently and quietly point out where birds are hiding, and there are dogs that will do a crazy dance to draw curious birds within gun range. There are dogs that will guard and let no one near their family (be that family human, dog, or sheep) and dogs that willingly accept handling from anyone. Sit down, because this is going to come as a shock to you. No breed of dog is inherently better at learning than any other breed or mix of breeds. That’s right – despite all the flashy behavior that certain breeds offer, despite the fact that some breeds of dogs are literally waiting around for you to tell them what to do, they are no quicker to learn than any other dog. That is not just my opinion – Scott and Fuller, in their seminal work “Genetics and the Social Behavior of the Dog” did extensive experiments with Basenjis, Shetland Sheepdogs, Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, and WireHaired Fox Terriers, and all manner of crosses of those breeds. The tests consisted of various complicated combinations of obstacles and mazes that the dogs had
RELATIVE “INTELLIGENCE” OF BREEDS: The Learning Curve is not Straightforward
One of the most fascinating books you can ever read is the American Kennel Club’s The Complete Dog Book (New York: Ballantine

You will learn how to take your dog’s natural independence and make it work for you. Rest assured that your dog does have the potential to become your agility partner – When Pigs Fly! to negotiate in order to get to a food reward. Scott and Fuller found that, when it came to problem solving and learning, no breed or cross of breed is quicker to learn than any other is. In their words, “… (A)ll breeds show about the same average level of performance in problem solving, provided they can be adequately motivated, provided physical differences and handicaps do not affect the tests, and provided interfering emotional reactions such as fear can be eliminated. In short, all the breeds appear quite similar in pure intelligence.” Wait, it gets better. I am going to go out on a limb and guess that people consider a Basenji to be one of the hardest to train dogs, and a Sheltie to be one of the easiest. If you attend obedience or agility trials, you will see lots and lots of Shelties, and powerful few Basenjis. Some people will attribute this to superior intelligence and learning ability on the part of the Sheltie. Here is what Scott and Fuller found:
“In general, the four hunting breeds (beagles, basenjis, terriers, and cockers) performed best on the tests. This is probably because most of the tests were deliberately designed to test independent capacities motivated by food rewards…By contrast, the Shetland sheep dogs, whose ancestors have been selected for their ability to perform complex tasks under close direction from their human masters, performed rather badly. Indeed, in many of the tests, the shelties gave the subjective impression of waiting around for someone to tell them what to do.” Genetics and the Social Behavior of the Dog, John Paul Scott and John L. Fuller The Basenji learned faster than the Sheltie. The Sheltie was waiting to be told what to do, and the Basenji was out there figuring it out on his own. So, if the Basenji is just as capable, if not more capable, than the Sheltie of learning, why is it so devilishly hard to get a Basenji to actually do what we want them to do? The answer is that traditional training models were designed with the biddable dog (like the Sheltie) in
mind. Those methods rely heavily on “showing” or “telling” the dog what to do. If you have a dog that is pre-programmed through hundreds or thousands of years of breeding to be receptive to being told what to do, those methods might get you somewhere. If you have a dog that has only ever been bred to think for himself, you will find yourself beating your head against a wall. The problem is not the dog, but the method used to teach him. Instead of compelling or showing the dog what you want him to do, you need to learn a system of training that will tap into your dog’s ability to excel at independently motivated problem solving, just like the dogs in Fuller and Scott’s study. Please note that the fact that the Sheltie was reluctant to problem solve does not mean that the Sheltie was more or less intelligent than the other dogs. It only means that the Sheltie had a natural preference to be told what to do in that context. I think we must be careful not to ascribe labels like “intelligent” or “unintelligent” to dogs, because the assessment of a dog’s intelligence is going to depend on your preconceived notions of what a dog “should” be. Stick to thinking about what you want your dog to do and the best way to get him to do it. Diagnosing a dog as “intelligent” or “unintelligent” will not further your training program in any way and will only add unnecessary baggage to the process. OK, now let’s look at your dogs learning strengths and challenges. Your dog may or may not have all of these qualities, but he probably has most of them:
STRENGTHS
> He is lively and very interested in his surroundings. > He is a good independent worker and problem solver. > Once he decides he wants something, he is obsessed about getting it and capable of overcoming amazing obstacles to reach his goal.
CHALLENGES
> He does not care much if you approve or disapprove of what he is doing – he has no natural desire to please you. > He has no natural inclination to pay attention to you > He is so obsessed with doing his own thing that it is hard or impossible to get him to refocus on the thing you would like him to do.

Pigs Fly Follower!
What you will see is that your dog’s strengths and obstacles are flip sides of the same coin: > He is lively and interested in his surroundings, which means that his whole world does not hinge upon you and whether you approve of him or not. > He is good at solving problems on his own, therefore he is doesn’t need to pay attention to you much. > He is capable of great passion and obsession with reaching a goal, which is a fabulous thing, so long as your goals and his goals are the same. Keep these two-sided traits in mind as you train your dog. These are the qualities that made you fall in love with him in the first place, and we are going to respect and celebrate these qualities every step of the way. An exasperating trait always has a flip side – it is the job of a good trainer to find that flip side and use it to his advantage.
The problem is not the dog, but the method used to teach him.

I
do my monthly exams and I make sure to get my yearly mammogram, but I wonder how many of us think to check our bitches? I barely gave it a thought and then a close friends 8 year old bitch was diagnosed with Inflammatory breast cancer two months ago. I mentioned it to my family and their mouths were agape.. Breast cancer in dogs? I thought it would be good to get the information out there and started the article and then the stupid cancer my brother had been heroically fighting for almost 4 years, took him unexpectedly. I have found it difficult to come back to writing an article about dog cancer after such a personal tragedy. I have made up one excuse after another not to tell the story about breast cancer in dogs because in the scheme of things was it really that important? Then realized that my brother was the sort of person, who would never want to see a dog suffer and maybe some of this information might save a dog’s life. So lets talk about cancer. Olivia is 8 years old. I spent the weekend with her and she was alert active and begging for treats. She had been given a clean bill of health at her annual check up in April. As we packed
to leave on our long drive home we did notice that she was curled up in the dog bed but didn’t give it much thought. Somewhere along the NJ turnpike my friend called to say Olivia was running a high temp and was planning to bring her to the emergency vet. We thought perhaps Lyme… but we were wrong. The vet felt a couple of lumps in her groin and made arrangements to see a specialist on Tuesday, by Wednesday they had done radical surgery removing most of the mammary tissue on one side. Biopsies were sent out and the worst diagnosis was presented a week later. Stage 3 Inflammatory Breast Cancer.
The most common type of tumor in bitches is a mammary tumor, especially in unspayed bitches. 26% of unspayed bitches develop some form of breast cancer. Bitches have 3X more risk of developing breast cancer than women, especially in dogs over the age of six. There has been a significant increase in breast cancer cases in the Sporting Breeds and Poodle’s, Boston’s and Dachshunds are particularly at risk.

detection
Breast Cancer Awareness Month.................
Spaying before the first heat reduces the risk to about a 1% chance. After the first heat cycle the risk increases to 8% and after 2 heat cycles the risk stabilizes at 26%. This brings up a dilemma, people are advocating to not spay until a year to ensure growth plate closer but now we are increasing the chance of breast cancer.
of the tumor and whether or not it is malignant. Diagnosis is done through a needle biopsy, which will tell you whether the tumor is benign or malignant, it can also determine how aggressive surgery should be. The actual tissue biopsy will determine the extent of the disease. There are many options for treatment including, chemo therapy and radiation. However just as in humans the best course of action is prevention and early detection, so when you do your monthly exams, make sure you are doing your bitches as well.
by Karen McNamara The symptoms are painless lumps usually closest to the groin. Masses may be large or small, singular or multiple. Some lumps are moveable, some are not. Occasionally the mass ulcerates the skin and produces bleeding. Multiple tumors are common. The treatment of choice is removing the lump or lumps with adequate margins of normal tissue. 50% of tumors are benign. The success rate is determined by size

What type of temperament was important? Gentle or aggressive? Did they want a companion or a protector? How big? Should it be a heavy weight or a light weight? What about the head? Do we want a round, square or elongated head? Now what are going to do about the muzzle? Do we want an undershot bulldog type or do we want the typical terrier muzzle? The ears – hmmm – how should they be carried and should they be prick, rose, folded or flop? Oh, and if they were prick should they be cropped?
designer dogs Virginia McEvoy O’Connell | Menotomy Bostons All breeds are ‘designer dogs’. How they would look and what attributes they would need were deliniated by the type of work they were bred to perform. Many years of hard work, defeats and triumphs went into the development of every breed we know today.
our breed using what they owned and wanted to improve. The first litters were probably born in stables on Beacon Hill and Joy Street. Eventually their employers came to see what these men were trying to accomplish and became interested in fostering the breed.
Let’s look at our wonderful breed, the Boston Terrier and just think about where they came from.
We know that the English Bulldog was used. Assuredly not the dog we see today but a totally different looking animal with a completely different temperament. The Old English White Terrier ,which none of us have ever seen, was also at the beginning of our breed. If you
The original breeders were not wealthy men. They were the carriage drivers and stablemen of the city of Boston, Massachusetts elite. They began
are a student of our breed and have read any of the old books you realize that these were not the only breeds incorporated to develop the Boston. There were many a dog of uncertain ancestry tossed into the mix to contribute this or that quality. Wouldn’t you love to have been there when the gentlemen who developed the Boston Terrier were trying to decide what the newest ‘designer dog’ was going to look like? The arguments must have been epic!!!! Some men wanted to create a fighting dog, others a ratter.
E Boston Terriers | www.ebostonterriers.com
Do we want an round or an almond shaped eye? Dark or light? What color should the dog be? Black, brown, brindle, grey or red? Should he have distinctive markings or should he be solid colored? Wait a minute – we haven’t even talked about the body of the dog. What are we looking for? Square, rectangular? Long legged, short legged? Deep chested or narrow? A level topline or a roach? Over extended angulation or moderate? Should the dog have a long tail, a short tail, a screw tail or no tail? These men went round and round – each one sure their ideas were the best for this new breed that their particular idea was right and everyone else was wrong. I am sure there were more than just battles of words. As you know most
of these men were of Irish extraction and fisticuffs are often the Irish way of settling an argument! Eventually, somehow or another, the ideas began to gel and bit by bit agreement was reached. Putting together a concise and readable standard for this new breed had to be tackled and again there were many an ‘irish meeting of the minds’ before that was accomplished. Once they figured out what the dog was going to look like, the kind of temperament that was preferred the hard work of breeding this new dog began in ernest. Trial and error and much heartache went into the formative years. Eventually they had a recognizable breed that bred true to type !!!! Naming the breed was another stumbling block. Bulldog breeders would not countenance the breed being called the round-headed Bulldog or the Boston Bull. The Bulldog breeders call the dog a mongrel and fought long and hard to discourage the use of the Bulldog as part of the name. Many names were thought up and discarded until finally, an American Kennel Club director, dubbed it the Boston Terrier in honor of the city where it all began! The akc dragged their feet for years but finally allowed the dog into the studbook in 1893.
appearance, size and general demeanor. Our breed has never gone below 25th in the popular breeds and has deservedly earned it’s nickname ‘The American Gentleman’. For many years the ‘Boston’ was the top entry in dog shows across the United States. We have always had folks who mix various breeds to come up with a new ‘designer dog’. The breeders who attempt this task have no idea of the time, energy and work that goes into making a new breed. I wish them luck and perhaps, in years to come, the cockerpoo, goldendoodle, etc. May be welcomed into the breeds shown at American kennel club all-breed shows. The Boston Terrier is the first breed accepted into the American Kennel Club studbook that began it’s existence here in the United States. So it is with undeniable pride that I state: the Boston Terrier is the original American ‘Designer Dog’ .
Truly, the Boston Terrier is the ‘American Designer Dog.’
Climbing very quickly into favor with the general public the Boston Terrier became the breed of choice for city dwellers because of it’s jaunty

Artist Michael Muller’s dog is his muse. The former teacher and galleryowner fashioned a whole new career built around Mirabelle, his adorable Boston Terrier Tom Boeke, gave Mirabelle, a Boston Terrier, to Michael Muller who says she has changed his life. Muller’s written three books about her and has designed cards and gifts featuring his beloved Mirabelle. “You know how you just know sometimes?” says Boeke who a few days later fixed a red bow onto the pup’s collar thinking he was giving his friend Michael Muller a dog for Christmas.
and this is why... we mirabelle E Boston Terriers | www.ebostonterriers.com
Little did he know, he gave him a furry muse. This fall, nearly six years after Muller met the dog he would name Mirabelle, Muller is no longer a first grade teacher. He’s a Baltimore artist who’s particularly known for fine art photographs of a certain black and white dog. He and Boeke are partners in a venture that sells everything from Mirabelle shirts to skateboards. And Workman Publishing just released a trio of children’s picture books -- written by Muller -- about a terrier named Mirabelle. They are such people dogs,” he says, “so inquisitive and interested in the world around them. Certain people see beauty in certain ways and I see a pushed-in little nose as beauty.”
Muller will tell anyone that like Boeke, he sensed something different about Mirabelle even as a puppy. A certain worldliness, a way of knowing just what he wanted from her that had nothing to do with training. Mirabelle came to work every day to the Rehoboth Beach gallery Muller and Boeke had opened together. The other dogs did not. She’d snooze in her bed behind the counter and when a customer would come in, she’d greet them gently. If folks wanted to take her picture, she was always willing. Sometimes she’d show uncanny salesmanship, standing gamely by the rack of cards with her picture on them. “She was meant to be our shop girl,” Muller says. He named her, in fact, after the title character in the Steve Martin novella, “Shop Girl.” Because of the faltering economy and a difficult location, gallery business was slow. So Muller and Boeke decided to advertise. On a whim, Muller put one of his photos of Mirabelle in the ad -- a shot of her sitting on a leather chair, staring down the camera, ears up. “People came in saying, ‘Who’s that little dog in the ad?’” Muller remembers, adding Mirabelle not only got traffic to the shop, she got people to open their
wallets. “The economy was such that nobody was buying thousanddollar pieces but they bought a Mirabelle card for $3.50 and a $20 Mirabelle T-shirt.” At some point Muller and Boeke decided Mirabelle was working but the gallery was not. On a buying trip to New York, Muller recalls a soul-searching conversation the two had over dinner. Was this interest in Mirabelle something that could last? Did they have the courage and tenacity to see it through? “The universe seems to be pushing us in this direction,” Muller said they decided. “Let’s listen.” Boeke returned to being a full-time physical therapist while he and Muller started a wholesale art card business with everything designed by Muller. They were pushing their wares at the National Stationery Show at Manhattan’s Jacob K. Javits

Convention Center when they caught the eye of talent scouts from Workman Publishing. Raquel Jaramillo, Workman’s children’s book director, said what turned her head was Muller’s fresh, minimalist style — “sophisticated yet adorable.” A book deal was born. Workman released three Mirabelle titles last fall -- “Mirabelle and the Bouncy Red Ball,” “Mirabelle and the Butterfly” and “Mirabelle Goes for a Walk,” which Muller says was entirely inspired by his daily walks with her around his Union Square neighborhood.

with the dog was the story. And so he became Mr. Muller, Mirabelle’s be-spectacled, bowtied sidekick. “I thought that the real uniqueness was her relationship with Mr. Muller, that sweet rapport they have between them,” Jaramillo says, adding it’s very parentand-child. “Just walking down the block is magical when you’re the parent of a child, nothing is taken for granted. That’s what Mirabelle brings to play for the reader -- every small tiny moment. Jumping over a puddle becomes an adventure.”
Releasing three at once is unusual, Jaramillo says, done to establish Mirabelle as a character right out of the box. In the books, Mirabelle is rendered with an oversize head and huge, upright ears. The eyes are wide and alert. Muller wasn’t originally going to put himself in the storyline but Workman insisted, saying his relationship

two minutes TO A TRAINED PUPPY By Jane Messineo Killion
GOT 120 SECONDS? IF YOU DO, YOU HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO TRAIN YOUR PUPPY. In fact, your puppy will learn more and faster with a two minute training session than he will with a 60 minute training session. Check out an excerpt from our upcoming film on our website, Puppy Culture - the Art and Science of Puppy http://whenpigsflydogtraining.com/#/Become%20a%20Pigs%20 Rearing and Socialization in Fly%20Follower/ the Critical First 12 Weeks, which explains why: Puppies learn most rapidly when given short training sessions with rest periods in- between. This is known as “distributed learning and the scientific principles behind it work the same for all dogs of all ages, from puppy to senior citizen.
E Boston Terriers | www.ebostonterriers.com
E Boston Terriers | www.ebostonterriers.com
IN MANY WAYS, BRAINS WORK LIKE COMPUTERS. Think of every response that earns the puppy a reward as a “1”, and every response that does not earn him a reward as a “0”. As the training session progresses, the puppy starts accumulating 1s and 0s in his brain, but things are happening too fast for him to fully sort it out. Much of what he experiences is set aside and spooled in memory, to be fully processed when his brain has the leisure to do so. When the puppy’s allowed to rest after a learning session, his brain has a chance to do some housekeeping.
(Image 1)
(Image 2)
(Image 3)
First, the data in his brain sorted out. (Image 1) The 1 responses, the responses that earned him a reward, tend to be given a permanent place in the brain, while the 0s, the responses that did not earn a reward, tend to be swept out of memory. (Image 2)
THIS IS THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE OLD ADAGE OF “SLEEPING ON IT.” IT MAY SEEM LIKE THE PUPPY READ A TRAINING MANUAL WHILE HE HAS NAPPING, BUT REALLY IT’S JUST HIS BRAIN HAVING A CHANCE TO GET ORGANIZED.
Second, the neural pathways in his brain re-wire themselves to accommodate this new information, making him able to recall and apply it when he needs it. (Image 3)
The optimum length of training session and rest period will depend on the age, development, and previous training of the individual dog, but as a guideline we limit our 6 week old puppies to six minutes total training, with approximately a half hour of rest in between. Although those are outside limits, we have found between one and three minute training sessions, with at least 15 minutes of rest inbetween, to be optimal.
After a good rest session, your puppy emerges with a nice, tidied up brain and you’ll often notice that he begins a new session with significantly better performance than he ended the previous session.

To all our Subscribers... I’m not getting the News! When is the Deadline? What are the Specials? When is the next Edition?
Having trouble receiving our E Blasts? At E Boston Terriers, we routinely send out E Blasts regarding any Advertising Specials, Deadline reminders and notifications of each new Edition published to all our Advertisers and Subscribers. To ensure that you receive our E Blast notifications, please check your email settings & filters. We use a Direct Mail email service to send all E Blast announcements. It may not be “recognized” by your mail service. This will result in a “BLOCKED MAIL” or SPAM on your end. You will not receive any of our E Blasts if this is the case. If you have not been receiving our E Mail Announcements, this may be the problem & can only be corrected on your end. Some servers will not deliver the email at all (you’ll never know!) & some will filter it into your SPAM folder. We have noticed this most frequently with those who have Comcast email accounts.
So....what should you do? 1) Check your Spam mail frequently & if our E Blasts end up in your SPAM folder, select us as “NOT SPAM”. 2) Check your filter settings on your E mail account to allow our Emails to go through & not be blocked. 3) Check E Boston Terriers website FREQUENTLY as all the information we send you in an E Blast regarding Specials, Deadline reminders, etc. is ALWAYS posted on the site. Our E Blast notifications are a courtesy to our loyal Subscribers & Advertisers to keep you informed & updated. By visiting the websites on a regular basis, you can always receive the information that we send out. We hope this helps! E Boston Terriers | www.ebostonterriers.com

Karen
has over 20 years of experience as a graphic designer with a Bachelor’s degree from Missouri State. She is currently Senior Graphic Designer at a large corporation, O’Reilly Auto Parts. She has many years of experience in handling many dog breeds and is a well known Dalmatian breeder under the kennel name of HiSpot Dalmatians. She loves designing for E-Dogs magazines as it brings her hobby and skills together in a very creative way!
Nicole
is absolutely thrilled to be designing for the “E Dog” team! Hailing originally from NYC, designing for such companies as Random House Children’s Publishing, Teen Magazine, Yoga Journal and Nickelodeon. Nicole is now a permanent resident of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She is currently senior designer at Hawthorn Publications, a custom publisher located in Portsmouth as well as designer for E Dog magazines. In her spare time she enjoys redecorating and attempting do-it-yourself home projects in her new condo. You will also see her in the show ring with her very active Boston Terriers !
Larissa
has been with E Dog Magazines from the very beginning. A graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology with a degree in visual media, Larissa specializes in graphic design, typography, photo restoration and candid dog photography. She has served for over 5 years as the official website photographer for USA at the Westminster Kennel Club Show. Founding prinicipal of LClarkPhotoDesign she continues to expand her portfolio of “Dog Biz” through her Pro Dog Show Photographer (and Father) Fritz Clark, and also as film editor with ShowDogVideoPros!

TROT-SAR Search and Rescue Team as well as E Dog Magazines. She specializes in candid photography which caputures the spirits and personalities of dogs and horses (oops don’t forget Lucky the sheep ). Her photos were selected as Grand Prize Winner for Foster and Smith Catalog, Revival Animal Health and 365 Dogs a Day Calendar. She has had Dalmatians for 32 years finishing conformation and performance titles on numerous dogs in AKC, UKC and International venues. Linda has also worked 34 years for the Federal Government as a Firefighter and recently retired from her position in Logistics and Supply Mangement Officer for the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (Veterinary Medicine).
was born into a house of dogs. Some of the breeds included Cocker Spaniels, St. Bernards, Irish Wolfhounds and Kerry Blue Terriers. Her true love of Dalmatians didn’t come true until 1981 and she has been an owner, breeder and exhibitor ever since. She is a graduate of Montserrat College of Art with a minor in photography and worked for many years as a senior store executive for a major retailer. After many years Karen has returned to the world of photography where her favorite subjects are her 3 Dalmatians and her garden. She is now the owner of Sit Stay and Play, A Dog Day Care center in Beverly Massachussetts and enjoys writing for E DogMagazines. In her spare time Karen is also an avid equestrian.
Jane
is the author of the best selling “When Pigs Fly: Training Success With Impossible Dogs.” She breeds Bull Terriers and is currently producing a film on puppy rearing and socialization in the critical first twelve weeks of life. Her somewhat paradoxical passions for Bull Terriers (not easy to train) and agility (requires a lot of training) have earned her a PhD in Getting Dogs To Happily Do Stuff They Don’t Naturally Want To Do. She’s been fortunate enough to travel all over the world and present seminars on training “Impossible” dogs, bringing a message to hope to dog owners who are at their wits end.
Michele,
For the Sport of Dogs has become her passion and weekend diversion from the world of High Technology where she has served in various Senior Leadership positions for the past 20 years. Michele was introduced to The Dalmatian breed 16 years ago when her husband decided he wanted a dog that he could take running. By the time they went to pick out their first puppy, they were looking for a show dog. Michele and her husband Tom have bred and exhibited Dalmatians under the SunnyOaks kennel name, producing multiple BISS winners, Group winners, National and Regional Specialty winners, and the 2004 Dalmatian Club of America Top 20 winner who went on to be the #1 Bitch and #3 Dal in 2004 and 2005. Michele has been contributing to E Dog Magazines as a writer for the past few years.

THE BOSTON TERRIER
General Appearance The Boston Terrier is a lively, highly intelligent, smooth coated, short-headed, compactly built, short-tailed, well balanced dog, brindle, seal or black in color and evenly marked with white. The head is in proportion to the size of the dog and the expression indicates a high degree of intelligence.
STANDARD The body is rather short and well knit, the limbs strong and neatly turned, the tail is short and no feature is so prominent that the dog appears badly proportioned. The dog conveys an impression of determination, strength and activity, with style of a high order; carriage easy and graceful. A proportionate combination of “Color and White Markings” is a particularly distinctive feature of a representative specimen. “Balance, Expression, Color and White Markings” should be given particular consideration in determining the relative value of GENERAL APPEARANCE to other points.
Size, Proportion, Substance
Weight is divided by classes as follows: Under 15 pounds; 15 pounds and under 20 pounds; 20 pounds and not to exceed 25 pounds. The length of leg must balance with the length of body to give the Boston Terrier its striking square appearance. The Boston Terrier is a sturdy dog and must not appear to be either spindly or coarse. The bone and muscle must be in proportion as well as an enhancement to the dog’s weight and structure. Fault: Blocky or chunky in appearance. Influence of Sex. In a comparison of specimens of each sex, the only evident difference is a slight refinement in the bitch’s conformation.
Head
The skull is square, flat on top, free from wrinkles, cheeks flat, brow abrupt and the stop well defined. The ideal Boston Terrier expression is alert and kind, indicating a high degree of intelligence. This is a most important characteristic of the breed. The eyes are wide apart, large and round and dark in color. The eyes are set square in the skull and the outside corners are on a line with the cheeks as viewed from the front. Disqualify: Eyes blue in color or any trace of blue. The ears are small, carried erect, either natural or cropped to conform to the shape of the head and situated as near to the corners of the skull as possible. The muzzle is short, square, wide and deep and in proportion to the skull. It is free from wrin-
kles, shorter in length than in width or depth; not exceeding in length approximately one-third of the length of the skull. The muzzle from stop to end of the nose is parallel to the top of the skull. The nose is black and wide, with a well defined line between the nostrils. Disqualify: Dudley nose. The jaw is broad and square with short regular teeth. The bite is even or sufficiently undershot to square the muzzle. The chops are of good depth, but not pendulous, completely covering the teeth when the mouth is closed. Serious Fault: Wry mouth. Head Faults: Eyes showing too much white or haw. Pinched or wide nostrils. Size of ears out of proportion to the size of the head. Serious Head Faults: Any showing of the tongue or teeth when the mouth is closed.
Neck, Topline and Body
The length of neck must display an image of balance to the total dog. It is slightly arched, carrying the head gracefully and setting neatly into the shoulders. The back is just short enough to square the body. The topline is level and the rump curves slightly to the set-on of the tail. The chest is deep with good width, ribs well sprung and carried well back to the loins. The body should appear short. The tail is set on low, short, fine and tapering, straight or screw and must not be carried above the horizontal. (Note: The preferred tail does not exceed in length more than one-quarter the distance from set-on to hock.) Disqualify: Docked tail. Body Faults: Gaily carried tail. Serious Body Faults: Roach back, sway back, slab-sided. Forequarters
The shoulders are sloping and well laid back, which allows for the Boston Terrier’s stylish movement. The elbows stand neither in nor out. The forelegs are set moderately wide apart and on a line with the upper tip of the shoulder blades. The forelegs are straight in bone with short, strong pasterns. The dewclaws may be

removed. The feet are small, round and compact, turned neither in nor out, with well arched toes and short nails. Faults: Legs lacking in substance; splay feet.

Color and Markings
Brindle, seal, or black with white markings. Brindle is preferred ONLY if all other qualities are equal. (Note: SEAL DEFINED. Seal appears black except it has a red cast when viewed in the sun or bright light.) Disqualify: Solid black, solid brindle or solid seal without required white markings. Any color not described in the standard. Required Markings: White muzzle band, white blaze between the eyes, white forechest. Desired Markings: White muzzle band, even white blaze between the eyes and over the head, white collar, white forechest, white on part or whole of forelegs and hind legs below the hocks. I could not ask for a sweeter, more fun, loving girl. Sizzle rocks it in the show ring and is always “on”. Her lovely structure and movement make you notice her right away. Her dark, round eyes melt your heart. Her silly antics make you laugh. She is a true joy and I am so very proud of her. She makes showing rewarding AND fun!!! Thanks to the many judges who have seen and rewarded her qualities and to all our friends and supporters for the cheers and laughs!
