Specialty Friday, August 1, 2014 Dixon May Fairgrounds, Dixon, Ca. A President’s View.. I may be a little biased, but I have to say that this year’s Sierra Gold Boston Terrier Club Specialty was one of our biggest successes!!! Sure, we’ve had more entries in the past, but this year was so FUN!!! We held our 17th & 18th specialty shows on Friday, August 1, 2014 and the morning show included Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes competition. In the afternoon show, we had our second specialty along with the Bests (Puppy, BBE, Veteran, Stud Dog, Brood Bitch). And this we we even added the National Owner Handled Series competition to both shows. We had so many lovely dogs and bitches entered, both by local exhibitors and exhibitors who traveled fromm Southern California and Oregon. Our judges (Dr. Dale Simmons in the AM and Mr. Peter Green in the PM) overcame the tremendous heat that day and carried off their judging without a hitch. Fortunately, our show is inside with some cooled air and LARGE fans. And we couldn’t have had any better trophy prizes than the GORGEOUS cool coats ALL handmade and donated by Bert Rettick, one of our awesome club members - isn’t that phenonmenal?!?!?!?!

In addition to the exhibitors, entries and judging, all the club’s committee did a truly outstanding job. Everything from the gorgeous trophy presentations to the stunning decorations to the scrumptous morning hospitality and drool-worthy homemade lunch (pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw, and turkey salad). We certainly could not have pulled off such a wonderful show without the help of our members, exhibitors, and external sponsors from the trophy sponsorships to the donations to our raffle, silent auction, and food hospitality we were overflowing with everyone’s generosity. We are unbelievably fortunate to have the best members, exhibitors, and chairman - THANKS TO ALL! And we can’t leave out our show secretary, Carolyn and Sieg Goepner, who always keep us in line and our photographers, Warren and Vicky Cook, who are ever patient in helping us capture the best moment with our dogs! I think it’s safe to say that all of us had a memorable time. And lastly, our Glady Cooper trophy was retired this year. The winner of the Best of Breed competition won at both shows this year and one show last year! I have no doubt that Marshan Fish and Kevin Norton, the breeders/owners of GCH Naughty Norteno’s Clik Clik Bang aka Tommy, are quite proud. I am honored to be the president of this great club and can’t wait for next year! I hope to see you there!!! Pamela Preston

This allows more room for your ad material and you get 2 pages for the price of ONE AD! This includes all Specialty Club Ads as well. We can design your Ad or you can send us a finished Ad.

Steps for Ad Submission needing to be Designed We will design your Ad using the material you submit to us. Design fee is included in the Price. Additonal Design fees may apply for any Ads needing specific custom designs and/ or multiple revisions. Step 1) Email us & tell us what type of ad you want. (Dog ad, litter ad, Club ad, classified listing, etc.) Step 2) Send us all your ad info to include: -Text copy you want on the ad -Color photo(s) of your dog scanned at High Resolution (150 dpi or higher) & sent to us electronically. They have campaigned numerous top winning Dalmatians in the US and abroad, and own/love/cherish the Nation’s #1 Colored Bull Terrier “Fergie” in 2003. Linda serves as staff photographer for the EQUIERY Magazine and Official Photographer for the

TROT-SAR Search and Rescue Team as well as E Dog Magazines. She specializes in candid photography which caputures the spirits and personalities of dogs and horses (oops don’t forget Lucky the sheep ). Her photos were selected as Grand Prize Winner for Foster and Smith Catalog, Revival Animal Health and 365 Dogs a Day Calendar. She has had Dalmatians for 32 years finishing conformation and performance titles on numerous dogs in AKC, UKC and International venues. Linda has also worked 34 years for the Federal Government as a Firefighter and recently retired from her position in Logistics and Supply Mangement Officer for the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (Veterinary Medicine).

Karen

was born into a house of dogs. Some of the breeds included Cocker Spaniels, St. Bernards, Irish Wolfhounds and Kerry Blue Terriers. Her true love of Dalmatians didn’t come true until 1981 and she has been an owner, breeder and exhibitor ever since. She is a graduate of Montserrat College of Art with a minor in photography and worked for many years as a senior store executive for a major retailer. After many years Karen has returned to the world of photography where her favorite subjects are her 3 Dalmatians and her garden. She is now the owner of Sit Stay and Play, A Dog Day Care center in Beverly Massachussetts and enjoys writing for E DogMagazines. In her spare time Karen is also an avid equestrian.

Jane

is the author of the best selling “When Pigs Fly: Training Success With Impossible Dogs.” She breeds Bull Terriers and is currently producing a film on puppy rearing and socialization in the critical first twelve weeks of life. Her somewhat paradoxical passions for Bull Terriers (not easy to train) and agility (requires a lot of training) have earned her a PhD in Getting Dogs To Happily Do Stuff They Don’t Naturally Want To Do. She’s been fortunate enough to travel all over the world and present seminars on training “Impossible” dogs, bringing a message to hope to dog owners who are at their wits end.

Michele,

For the Sport of Dogs has become her passion and weekend diversion from the world of High Technology where she has served in various Senior Leadership positions for the past 20 years. Michele was introduced to The Dalmatian breed 16 years ago when her husband decided he wanted a dog that he could take running. By the time they went to pick out their first puppy, they were looking for a show dog. Michele and her husband Tom have bred and exhibited Dalmatians under the SunnyOaks kennel name, producing multiple BISS winners, Group winners, National and Regional Specialty winners, and the 2004 Dalmatian Club of America Top 20 winner who went on to be the #1 Bitch and #3 Dal in 2004 and 2005. Michele has been contributing to E Dog Magazines as a writer for the past few years.

by JANE KILLION, Director of the new film, “Puppy Culture - The Critical First 12 Weeks That Can Shape Your Puppy’s Future” www.puppyculture.com I’m assuming you’re a dedicated breeder, who puts a lot of time, money, and energy into combining what you believe is the best genetic material when you do a breeding. You back that up by giving your bitch the best prenatal care and nutrition possible, and then follow through with sound rearing, nutrition, socialization, and training for the puppies. You’ve done everything you can, and the rest is up to the genetic roll of the dice, right?

Well, maybe not. BORN LEADERS OR KILLER GENES?

Genes, which many people think of as written in stone, can switch on and off or express themselves very differently depending on environmental influences. Thus, the same gene can express itself as a negative trait or a positive trait, depending on environmental input, especially very early in life. Take, for example, the aggressive variant of the human MAO-A gene, otherwise known as the “Warrior Gene.” At its base, this gene causes people to respond aggressively and have less fear, and also create less empathy for others. Given a supportive, nurturing childhood environment people with this variant grow up to be our presidents and community leaders, make energetic

and wonderful spouses and parents, and tend to be financially successful because they have the competitiveness and focus to rise to the top. If, however, an individual with this variant of the MAO-A gene is exposed to a severely traumatic event very early in life, he has a high risk of becoming a sociopath or even a serial killer. Now, your dog may never grow up to be president or a mass murderer, but is it possible that early environmental influence can determine the difference between the dog that shows like he owns the ground he stands on and the dog thatʼs such a sonofabitch that you need to take Xanax and a good insurance policy into the ring to show him?

The study of environmental influence on genetic expression is still in itʼs infancy, but thereʼs overwhelming evidence that early experiences and input can effect the way genes play out. But thatʼs not even the beginning of the story.

SINS OF THE FATHERS

Rats who were repeatedly exposed to a smell and then given a mild electrical shock, began to respond fearfully when exposed to that smell, even if the shock was not administered. Not exactly mind blowing information, but consider this - when those male rats were bred, their offspring showed fear in the presence of that smell, and when those offspring were bred, their children also showed fear in the presence of that smell. So that traumatic experience was

literally encoded in the male ratʼs DNA and passed down through the generations. Now thatʼs mind blowing.

SMART GENES

The rat study seems to indicate that the genetic material that is passed from generation to generation can actually adapt to environmental influence in a way that maximizes survival for the subsequent generations. This drops a bomb in the already contentious nature vs nurture debate, and has given scientists and dog breeders pause for thought. Now do we not only have to consider the rearing of the puppies and the care and comfort of the mother, but of the father, and of both grandparents and who knows how far behind that. The influence of environment on the genetic material of fathers has been demonstrated again and again in humans, although the mechanisms for this change are not yet well understood. For instance, a Swedish study indicated that men who experienced famine before puberty were less likely to have grandsons with diabetes or heart disease than men who had access to normal

amounts of food before puberty. A study in the UK found that fathers who began smoking before age 11 were more likely to have obese children.

and memory, and those offspring may display more negative behavior traits. Hereʼs some ways you can reduce stress and help your bitches be good moms:

The bottom line is, we can no longer think of the sires of our litters as hermetically sealed vessels to carry genetic information from one generation to the next. - their care, upbringing and experiences are important to the future of their children, grandchildren, and possibly beyond.

I. Listen to your bitch - Some bitches like having the support of their “pack” when theyʼre in whelp or have a litter, and some bitches just really appreciate a private, quiet area away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the house. If she wants a private room, give it to her. If she doesnʼt want dogs near the door to her room, put baby gates up to create a buffer zone.

WISDOM FOR THE WHELPING BOX

II. Go ahead, spoil her - even if youʼre a top down kind of person, maybe you want to let a few things slide during this time. I was lucky enough to learn from some great breeders whoʼve been at this for a long time. These breeders were very traditional and ruled their households with an iron fist. Yet, when they had a bitch in whelp or with puppies, they dissolved into a cooing bowl of jello with their girls. Thatʼs the wisdom of the ages coming through. Try a little extra indulgence and letting things go instead of correcting your bitch when sheʼs pregnant and

So what is the practical implication of all this? While epigenetics in dogs is just now starting to be examined, there are some reasonable inferences about what we should be doing with our breeding stock to maximize positive qualities in our dogsʼ genetic material:

Keep your bitch calm and comfortable - Itʼs been proven time and time again that stressed mothers give birth to more stressed offspring with decreased learning

on whelping box duty. It will go a long way toward reducing her stress.

III. Vitamin L - Cuddle and

stroke your bitch as much as possible. Thereʼs some evidence that puppies from mothers who received caressing and affection during pregnancy give birth to more docile puppies, and those puppies may enjoy being stroked and touched more than puppies from mothers who did not receive this kind of touching and affection. Our girls get very clingy when theyʼre in whelp and the fact is theyʼre probably craving some good love vitamins for their puppies. We use a 48” whelping box for our Bull Terriers so we have room to lie down in it and stroke our girls, both before and after they whelp.

2. Shield Your Puppies During

Their Critical Period - At least the first 12 weeks of your puppiesʼ lives should be carefully scripted by you. Challenges and stress- provoking stimuli should be introduced in carefully and scientifically sound doses, and the puppiesʼ environment should be stimulating, but very carefully protected from any really traumatic or frightening experiences.

how to craft this kind of optimal experience for your puppies in their first 12 weeks, but hereʼs a couple of tips that most people overlook:

Wide open spaces - Make sure your bitch always has a way to get away from her puppies if she needs to. Never close your bitch in with the puppies and force her to stay. A keening swarm of puppies who eat like they have hollow legs can be too much for some bitches. You want to give your mom a chance to escape rather than have to confront the Mongol hoards. Certainly, she should be able and allowed to jump out of the whelping box or weaning pen and leave the puppies behind. Better yet, you can also build a platform in the weaning pen if you have a large area - itʼs a great way to let her stay with her puppies yet get away from the little darlings when she needs a break.

II. Respect The Double Edged

Sword - The emotional sensitivity that will allow a puppy to be socialized and accept something with as little

as one exposure during the critical socialization period, cuts both ways. It will also allow the puppies to imprint a bad experience in as little as one exposure. If youʼre ever in doubt as to whether anything might be too frightening for your puppies, or if people you have over can be trusted not to scare or handle the puppies roughly, or whether your neighborʼs dog really is a nice dog for the puppies to play with, always, always, always err on the side of caution and pass up on that interaction. Keep all interactions with people and dogs positive during this time.

Itʼs not been proven that negative experiences during the critical socialization period will negatively influence DNA, but given the research which shows that male rats can pass down an acquired fear of a smell to their kids and grandkids, itʼs a really good bet that a traumatic experience during the start of a puppyʼs life could have a similar effect. Why take the chance?

DADS MATTER

I think collective wisdom is there that we need to give our bitches a stable, healthy, and loving environment for them to produce stable, healthy, and loving puppies. Science is really just confirming what good breeders already have been intuitively doing long before anyone studied it. But the thought that this kind of nurturing environment could be vitally important to the sireʼs DNA is thought provoking and new, and I would certainly encourage breeders to start thinking about how a stable and loving environment for a stud dog, whether itʼs one you choose or one you own, might influence the genetics of his progeny for generations to come. Hammock Beds: Recommendations and Brand Comparisons.

Why You Need Hammock Beds For Your Puppies Puppies love hammock beds - it makes a cozy nest and it keeps the puppies clean and off the floor. I think they like the way it sinks in the middle and give that “den” feeling. It also makes a great play fort, as you can see in this clip from Puppy Culture:

What size to get? The beds come in many sizes so here’s a reference for you: 7-8 Bull Terrier puppies can comfortably fit in a 24x36 bed up to about 9 weeks of age.

Although they inexplicably do like to jam themselves into small places, we still add a second bed when they start falling off the sides or they can’t comfortably fit on it in one layer. These puppies are 9 weeks old.

Which Brand Is Best? It’s rare that you can unequivocally point to one product as winning on every point, but the hands down, winner for us in every category are the Kuranda beds. http://kuranda.com/ Here are the points that keep Kuranda beds head and shoulders above the rest:

k Hidden edges on the webbing. Kuranda has brilliantly hidden the webbing inside the PVC frame so there’s nothing to chew. The puppies would love to destroy it, but their little mouths just can’t get a purchase on anything. Sort of like the shark scene from James and the Giant Peach. You see a lot of furious activity but in the end the worst is a couple of scratches. NICE!

In contrast, here is a photo of the Max 200 bed we started with - this is the way the demise,of the bed begins, and then it progresses rapidly to it being chewn in half, and the puppies are lying on the floor. We went through 5 or 6 of these very expensive (and incredibly difficult to put on) covers before we bought the Kurandas. Now we’ve had the Kurandas with their original covers for over three years. Even after three years, our expert adult chewers did not manage to completely destroy this bed that we keep on the back deck. And they really tried!

k Overall, very reasonable price Amazon has the 36x 72 Kuranda bed listed for $72.00 including shipping.

The very cheapest PVC hammock bed I could find was at Lowes, which was $41.00 They do not sell replacement covers (at least, could not see any on their site), and the cheapest replacement covers I could find are 30+ dollars. So the price is really about the same, if you figure you will go through at least one cover per litter.

If your puppies are not self-contained-wrecking-units, the Loweâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s product might be a good deal, but I still donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like that little space where a leg could get jammed between the PVC and the webbing. E Boston Terriers | www.ebostonterriers.com

Oh, and don’t bother with the fleece covers. This photo was taken literally within one second of putting the covered bed in the weaning pen. Bull Terrier puppies are divining rods for the destroy-able portion of anything you put in their tank, I mean, pen. They don’t even have to investigate the whole thing to find the part they can chew - the weak part of the item sends out some kind of signal to the litter and they go straight there.

Your puppies may not be this efficient at destruction, in which case the covers are very nice.

We got sick of replacing the fleece covers and now use nice fluffy double sided fleece beds, instead. It’s stiff enough to lay flat and not ball up and they can’t chew it. Yes, not cheap, but lasts forever with puppies.

physiological changes over animals raised under standard laboratory conditions: •Larger brains •More new brain cells and neural connections •Better brain cell survival The result of these physical changes in brain structure result in the following intellectual and emotional benefits: •Improved ability to learn and remember •More emotional stability •Better resiliency to stress

While many breeders are hip to the idea of enrichment,

The Enrichment Triple Crown

very few breeders understand that just providing toys and social interaction is not enough to take full advantage of what we call “The Enrichment Effect.” The optimal enriched environment will offer the following three things: 1. Stimulating living area - for example, toys, visual objects, different types of footing,different sounds, and social interaction. Breeders have done a great job with this in recent years, and there are even a number of commercial “play pen” type products available for puppies. 2. Exercise - Including adequate space to move as much as the puppies wish to, “jungle gym” type challenges such as climbing and outdoor exercise, when possible. 3. Problem solving and learning - “Active” training challenges, where the puppy is presented with a problem or training task, and then asked to solve that problem for a reward. This is as opposed to “passive” challenges usually provided by breeders in the form of toys and interactive objects. Interestingly, it appears that the task has to be motivated by positive reinforcement for neural benefits to take place. Apparently, the hormonal effect (cortisol release) caused by corrections or aversives inhibits the growth and survival of brain cells.

The Whole Is Greater Than The Sum of the Parts While any one of these elements taken alone will have some positive effect, there is some evidence that these elements have an additive effect on each other. So the same stimulating living area will have more positive effects if coupled with exercise and problem solving/learning, than a stimulating living area alone.

What’s interesting is that each of these components of enrichment will positively affect the brain in a different way. For instance: • Exercise alone has been shown to increase the thickness of the cerebral cortex (the “thinking” part of the brain), but has been found not to increase the formation of the neural connections in the brain (synaptogenesis) which are necessary for learning and memory. • Stimulating (“enriched”) living environments have been shown to improve brain cell survival, but may not increase the number of new cells being produced. • Problem solving and learning appear to increase neural formation, survival, and neural connections, but have been found to not be as effective as exercise in forming new blood vessels (aniogenesis) in the brain. Although I’m not aware of a specific study that addresses this, it’s easy to see how the distinct effects of stimulating environment, exercise, and learning could fit together like interlocking fingers and leverage each other’s delivery on the Enrichment Effect. So breeders are well advised to include all three in their puppy rearing program.

More Is Not Better

Too much stimulation and challenge can be

as harmful as not enough, and something that is extremely beneficial one week of a puppy’s life could be detrimental in the next. So, as with everything, a balance is needed. You can certainly get a lot of good ideas for environmental enrichment on the Internet, but we’re going to pitch Puppy Culture here, because we’ve provided in-depth, week-by-week instructions for age appropriate enrichment protocols. We show you how to tune stimulation/enrichment to your puppy’s level of development, which is key to a successful enrichment program.

What’s the rush? There’s plenty of evidence that animals of any age can benefit from the

Enrichment Effect. Even if your dog or puppy was raised in an impoverished environment, he can grow new brain cells and form new neural connections. So why do breeders need to jump in and start so early? The key here that the critical socialization period is this incredibly short time where we have an opportunity to make an exponentially bigger impact on behavior, compared to even a few weeks later in the puppy’s life. As Dr. Meghan Herron DVM and Jean Donaldson point out in Puppy Culture, you’ve got about 9 weeks (from age 3 weeks through 12 weeks) to get your primary work done. Things start going downhill rapidly at 12 weeks and by 5 months of age the ship has pretty much sailed in terms of being able to impact behavior with only a couple of exposures. It’s my position that I want to give my puppies all the brain power I can so that they can assimilate as much information as possible during this critical socialization period. This is strictly my hypothesis, but I want to give the information I pour into my puppies a chance to “stick” and I believe the Enrichment Effect can help.

intelligence is desirable in puppies. They’re afraid the puppies will be too “busy” and difficult for average pet people to handle. The good news is that the ultimate benefit of the Enrichment Effect is increased emotional stability of the puppies. Better recovery from fear, less fear-based aggression, calmer, and quicker to learn basic “commands.” So the kind of intelligence that enrichment cultivates is compatible with an “easy to live with” kind of dog. A WEEK

at the National PAMELA H PRESTON

oston Terrier Club of America’s (BTCA’s) annual National Specialty and host club shows were held in Lancaster, PA this year. It was an adventure for me and my friend, Mary. We DROVE all the way from California (starting point was San Jose) to Lancaster, with stopovers in Illinois, West Virginia, and Delaware so we could hit some dog shows along the way. We also had a travel gnome, Nelson, keeping us company. Nelson was photographed in many places and made many new friends along the way, but I digress… Back to the National - The weather was beautiful, the exhibitors were excited, and the dogs were ready to strut their stuff! The host club shows were held the first two days and I

have to give a HUGE “THANK YOU” to the Tri-Angle Boston Terrier Breeders Club and Lenape Boston Terrier Club for two absolutely WONDERFUL shows. Their members worked tirelessly to provide much needed health clinics, lovely decorations, outstanding raffle and auction items, smoothrunning shows with excellent ring stewards, announcers, and superb judges. They did not disappoint!!! Monday and Tuesday brought us the Host Club specialty shows including sweepstakes, junior showmanship, obedience, and rally. Monday night was the evening for our continuing education. The Reproduction Seminar was interesting and very informative. I always enjoy the question and answer time when we can ask real-life questions and get honest answers from specialists. Thank you Dr. Julia Smith – you made the seminar fun!! Tuesday was filled with more great exhibits in all venues and the Affiliates meeting that night. These two clubs went the extra mile and provided gorgeous rosettes to all of the CH entries – what a wonderful and unexpected surprise!!! I LOVED THEM!!!

Many exhibitors took time out to go sightseeing. Lancaster was a short distance to Intercourse, PA (so named as it was the hub/crossroads/intersection for many travelers when buying and selling their goods). Intercourse is in the heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. I took a half day trip there with a friend and enjoyed an awesome buggy ride to see some of the local Amish farms, tasted some yummy homemade canned goods (pickles, jams, relishes, sauces, etc.) – still made from scratch by Amish women, and visited with some of the locals in the shops. We also ate at a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch restaurant. Everyone was pleasant, helpful, and interesting. It was a perfect day for visiting and being outside – what a treat!!! After the host club shows, the BTCA kicked off with sweepstakes and futurity on Wednesday as well as the start of the Judge’s Education Seminar, along with obedience and rally, and followed by the semi-formal Top Boston event that evening. ing fun doing it. This is always one of my favorite events!! Thursday brought us ringside mentoring for the Judge’s Education seminar, junior showmanship and judging of the class dogs and bitches as well as agility trials. Everything seemed to happen so fast, we didn’t even have time to go back up to the hotel to eat. Thank goodness there was food available (OMGosh – the potato soup was FANTASTIC!!!) at the event. The annual meeting was that night followed by parties in various rooms for some and cocktails in the bar for others – still… a fun time by all! Friday was the grand finale with the last of the ringside mentoring for Judge’s Education and BOB judging, judging of all the “Bests” and parade of titleholders, followed that night with the Annual Banquet. Again.. the decorations, food, fellowship with other exhibitors, and sheer joy of sharing a common love (i.e., Boston Terriers) was exceptional!

Saturday morning was our time to say “See you next year!” and it’s always the saddest part. We often ONLY see some of our friends just at the National, so when it’s time to leave, it’s not always easy and you may have to dab a leaky eye once or twice as you give that last hug. I have been to many Nationals and hope to attend many more, but I honestly have to say, if you have not yet been to a National, you really NEED to try to attend. It is an awesome place to network, personally see potential stud dogs, make new friends and see old ones, buy some unique items from special vendors, sightsee in a new part of the country, maybe pick out a mentor (or a puppy…), and genuinely just have a FANTASTIC time. Next year, the National will be held in Baton Rouge, LA from May 16 to May 20, 2016. I really hope you can make it and if you do, find me and say hello!!!!
