We would like to Thank Gay Hillman for expertly handling Arlo for placements each day at the BTC Dallas Specialty. Jan Dykema Critique - Best of Opposite Sex This is a fabulous dog. Powerhouse personified. He stands over his ground in a nice square package that is magnified by his massive bone and straight lines in front. His head is packed and filled and turned combined with nice length of head. Wonderful expression, as “varminty” as can be. Rear is muscular and his back is short enough. Move out with purpose and his stride was parallel in all directions. A quality dog. Russell Lamonby Critique - Select Dog. Well constructed and balanced with a strong, filled head...his mouth is level. Good bone and substance and has quality throughout. Being number 1 By Michele Wrath

We live in North Carolina in an area otherwise known as the Ground Zero of College Basketball. With 4 Division 1 teams within 50 miles of each other, and home to what is considered to be the greatest rivalry in the NCAA - Duke and UNC, the Triangle is College Basketball. When you move to a new area, you pick a place to live, schools for your kids, and a doctor, a dentist and possibly a church. When you move to Carolina, you also pick a basketball team. ....We picked Duke.

The Duke Basketball program under Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K) is one of the best in the country. Coach K has built a legacy of success; taking good players and creating great teams that have gone on to win multiple conference, tournament and national titles. The banners recognizing these accomplishments hang proudly from the rafters at Cameron Stadium. Along with the success of the program on the court, Duke has attained the highest graduation rate of the #1 seeds in the j2010 NCAA tournament. 92% of Duke’s players complete their college educations, a rarity in a sport where increasingly “one and done” is the order of the day. And as a result, everyone hates Duke. The reasons are as wide and varied as you might expect. They are a private school, so of course they have more financial resources to throw at the program. They get all the breaks from the ref’s - everyone “knows” the fouls fall their way. When they won the NCAA tournament it was because they had an easier bracket. Never once do their detractors acknowledge that perhaps it was the combination of talent, coaching, and the day in and day out dedication and hard work required to excel.

Sound familiar? I remember when we first got started in dogs. There was a dog that was being shown in our area. The dogwas just starting his show career, was exhibited by a top handler and was well on his way to setting multiple records in the breed. The dog was a very good dog, of excellent breed type, with a strong presence - a real showman in the ring. But if you listened to the

commentary outside the ring, you would have thought that the dog was nothing more than average – and that was on a good day. Certainly with all of those faults and that undesirable temperament the only reason the dog could be winning is because of the handler, the ads, the politics - you name it. It could never be because it was a good dog. It makes me wonder where the saying “Everyone loves an winner” came from. Because clearly we don’t like winners who consistently win.

What we DO like is the underdog. One of my most memorable moments in dogs occurred after we had been in the breed for just a few years. I had my first show dog, a bitch, and she was slow to come along. I was the person in the local group most deserving of the “Reserve Queen” tee shirt. The person everyone loved to see show up at the dog show, because odds were quite good that I wasn’t going to win. And then the day came - a certain judge known for his tendency to fall in love - fell in love with my bitch - and she won a 5 point major at a specialty. Everyone cheered for us. I was the underdog, the long shot no one expected to win and the tears running down my cheeks as I accepted my winners ribbon and trophy were the undeniable evidence of that fact. I know what you might be thinking. Yes, it is easier to like the underdog. They have not developed an ego about winning - after all they have no experience with it. They are a bumbling mass of humility and pure joy, and quite frankly if we are honest

with ourselves they remind us of ourselves when we started out in the sport.

Success can be heady stuff and when it goes bad, it can be ugly. We all know the person who assumes that for whatever reason - length of time in the breed, past wins, local stature - you name it, they should be the rightful heir to the awards on that day – and that day happens to be every day. And, when for whatever reason, the judge finds a dog they like better and the ribbons go another way the venom spews forth. The judge must be an idiot. Who would want to win under this judge! The other competitor had “an in”. After all, how could that pig have beaten my dog? In the extreme, this person might feel it necessary to explain all of this to the person who in fact did win either directly or indirectly. Isn’t social networking a wonderful thing! You might also recognize this person - the one that goes to the dog show - but can only remember when it comes time to post results - the win that their dog achieved. They were too excited, didn’t have a catalog you name it. The excuses go on. No matter that these are the same dogs they compete against weekend in and weekend out. They can recite line and verse every fault of these dogs, and every bad dog contained in the pedigrees of these dogs, but for some reason they can never seem to remember when these dogs win.

It is hard to like these people. When you are at the top of your game, you become the benchmark for others. After the NCAA Championship win in 2010, Duke

E Bull Terriers | www.ebullterriers.com

headed into the 2011 season with a Number 1 ranking. Someone may as well have painted a target on their backs. Every team that faced Duke on the court this season brought their A game. A win against Duke meant bragging rights and in order for Duke to defend its position they had to be on top of their game every time they stepped onto the court. That is the price of being at the top. It is no different in dogs. Anyone who has ever campaigned a top dog knows that it is an all-encompassing endeavor. If there is a dog show somewhere, you need to be there. These dogs often travel longer distances, are shown more frequently and are expected to take it all in stride. We expect these dogs to be perfect. And every time they step into the ring we scrutinize their every move. At the same time, every other exhibitor’s private goal is to knock off the big dog. How many times have you heard someone brag about their big win over “Top Specials”? It comes with the territory. One of the things that Mike Krzyzewski does as part of the conditioning of his team is to pack the toughest competition he can find into the season. Duke typically plays a full schedule, with a healthy dose of out of conference games often cutting short the amount of downtime between games. The more aggressive schedule and tougher competition provide an excellent benchmark for the team. They get a much better idea of the true strength of their offense and defense, enabling them to focus on the areas of the game that need improvement. Competition makes their game stronger. The same can certainly be said about

the sport of dogs. Relative quality has the ability to elevate or place a drag on the overall quality of a breed. When overall quality is high and competition is tough, breeders are successful only if they breed better quality dogs that are well conditioned and trained for the show ring. This bodes well for the breed. With better quality dogs to select from, the gene pool is strengthened, and the resulting offspring should continue to be an improvement on their sire and dam. When overall quality is not as strong and competition is less intense it is obviously easier to win. If a breeder is not diligent, standards slide, and dogs that would otherwise not be candidates for a breeding program end up in the gene pool and the gradual downward trend continues. How many times have you heard a breeder say “This dog is no worse than what is out in the ring showing now.” Competition is good for the sport of dogs. It makes us better handlers and better breeders, and hopefully better competitors. In our early years in dogs one of my favorite parts of the national specialty was the hospitality room, which contained a photographic display of all of the past winners. I would look at those pictures and at those special dogs and hope that some day my dogs would be a part of that display. It gave me something to aspire to while I got my hind end kicked to kingdom come each weekend at the dog show. Over time we have had the good fortune of making our way onto that display. And we have a much better understanding of what it takes to be at the top of your game.

What NOT to Wear

By Karen McNamara

Recently Rachael Ray did fashion makeovers on some of the exhibitors from Westminster. This brought back memories from many years ago when I use to sit ring side with a friend of mine and we would issue virtual fashion violations to the exhibitors in the ring. If you walk through the dog show you can observe exhibitors and handlers spending hours, bathing, drying, clipping, brushing and generally grooming their dogs to perfection. But the one thing they fail to do is take a quick peek in the mirror of themselves. Sometimes hours of work marred by what the handler is wearing! Now some will tell you that the handler should not be noticed but bad attire sticks out like a sore thumb. For some exhibitors there are only 2 questions they ask themselves, Can I run in this? Does it have pockets? Granted important qualities in a good show outfit. In my virtual dog show world, Sporting people would wear tartans and tweed. Hound people would wear sleek looking trendy outfits. Toy people would be all about the bling. Terrier people would have the classic styles. The Working people would have functioning outfits first and foremost. The Herding people would be a cross between tweeds and classics and the Non sporting people like their group itself would wear a little bit of everything . But there is more you should be asking yourself about your outfit.

Does the color compliment my dog? I saw an exhibitor show a Dalmatian with a wildly patterned skirt. I thought I was whirling around inside a kaleidoscope. If your dog is black, should you wear a black skirt? Well maybe if you have a bad top line! Having spent a quarter century in the fashion industry I know that foundation is the start of every outfit. But somehow the athletic bra hasn’t caught on in the dog show ring. I know from experience there is nothing more distracting than your girl friends bouncing around the ring in front of you! Or even worse having them pop out of your shirt. Don’t laugh it happened to me at a specialty. From that day on I strapped on the support bra before I entered the ring. What about the length of your skirt? Is it whacking your dog in the face when you do your down and back? Or is it so short when you bend over we can see up to your undergarments and let’s pray you actually have them on! And then there are the shoes. Years ago we wore chunky athletic shoes sometimes with white gym socks. Yes I have picture of myself! What was I thinking? Lucky for us there are now many stylish shoes that one can actually run in. So keep an eye out for that perfect shoe. There’s nothing worse than running out of your shoe on the go around. If you are going to spend hours on your dog, spend a half an hour on yourself to complete the picture.

Make Rachel and your dog proud!

Advertising Made Easy June Krukenkamp Editor

Advertising should not be a confusing process. Many people seem to be intimidated or confused about advertising in an electronic magazine. We want to make advertising easy for you so that you can show off your dog(s) in our E Breed Magazines. We would like to provide you with some step by step instructructions & offer some helpful tips to make it easy ,affordable & fun for you to advertising your dog in our E Breed magazines.

In our E Publications We live in an “electronic age”. New technology is growing rapidly and it can be very hard to keep up with all the new concepts, gadgets & modern services that are now common place in our society. We have changed the way we talk on the phone, listen to music, watch movies on TV & obtain our day to day information. Our communication has changed too as we find ourselves emailing, texting, blogging & tweeting to “socially connect” with each other and gather information. The inventions of Cell phones, I pods, Blue Ray devices, computers & more has thrust us into a technology driven world that we are now part of (despite many who are still kicking & screaming in protest) With all this “modernizing” of how we communicate & entertain ourselves, it is no surprise that the publishing world is changing too.

Books are available now to be read electronically with their new high tech devices (Kindle, I pad, etc) and the magazine world is jumping on board! I came to the realization many years back that Dog Publications should integrate in this “high tech” world. People should be able to advertise their dogs, breedings, wins & more in ONE place for the world to see for free....the ULTIMATE network! Many people have websites & blogs showing off their dogs, photos but viewers have to go to many different sites to view dogs & many just don’t. Our E Breed publications are easily accessible & our subscriber base is growing daily. People are realizing the value of this format to “show off” their dogs and brag on their wins & more.

So? How do you advertise in our E Breed Publications? It’s easy..
