To Marie Mori and her wonder dog, Luke. Marie and Luke earned their fourth agility championship title, CS-ATE (CPE Specialist Agility Team Extraordinaire). Luke is the only Dalmatian breed champion thus far with these accomplishments. Luke is 11 years old and lost his right eye last year, but that did not stop this extraordinary team from pursuing their goal. Marie, Luke and Emmy (previously retired) are well-known, loved and admired in the agility community, as they have competed in AKC, NADAC and CPE. . Marie likes to think she is retiring Luke, but they continue to sign up for CPE trials in the greater Bay area. I guess as long as this boy continues to run with gusto, his mom will bring him out to thrill the crowds! There is a saying , “May I be the person my Dalmatian thinks I am” ...Marie is that person. How Does Your National Rank?
A
ttending the national is an exciting event that not everyone is
So when the opportunity affords us we burn up our phone minutes, whip off emails and start the many lists of what we will need for a trip to the national. Where else can we have the opportunity to make new friends and visit with old friends from all around the world wrapped around a dog venue?
watching the conformation dogs gobble up the hot dog while their owners are begging them to come in the hopes of rescuing some piece of hot dog to place in the class.

able to enjoy every year.
but the side splitting laughter
Over the past year I have had the opportunity to attend over a dozen nationals as the official videographer of their national events. Some on the west coast, some on the east coast, some in the north, some in the south and even a few in the middle. So with all the recent discussion about where the National should be held I thought it might be a good time to talk about some of the other events that other National clubs have hosted. While we might not admit it, deep down we all attend the National with the hopes and dreams of bringing home a ribbon. Some people might say well it’s an honor just to make the cut, or place in the class but who’s kidding who,
we all want that piece of the pie, that class win or dare I say it, even winners or breed and yet these people are a very small percentage of the population who attend a National. Some clubs have made it about so much more than winning, its about having fun with your friends and your dog, even if you aren’t winning in the breed classes. The English Springer Spaniel Club offers a relay race competition. Imagine dressing your dog in boxers, a T-shirt and socks on their 2 back legs and running across the ring? Or what about the Hot Dog Toss… granted the obedience dogs win
Costume team obedience where the handlers and the dogs were dressed in assorted costumes and asked to perform assorted obedience commands including dropping to the floor with a huge whale tail dragging behind them. Then there was the club that offered the rubber ducky toss. A toy dog size blue dog bed was placed in the middle of the ring and people who purchased tiny rubber ducks tried to toss them into the “dog bed aka pond” to win a prize. The Bulldogs have a costume party and there was nothing funnier than seeing a male bulldog dressed in fish net panty hose especially when he was going away from you. They also had a different regional club put on a free theme dinner every night as part of hospitality. The Chinese Crested people
E Dalmatians | www.edalmatians.com
had a fun match where everyone including the dogs was dressed in the Mardi Gras theme. The Papillion Club of America had an over 60 handling class. All of the exhibitors had some form of butterfly costume on and even the AKC judge was dressed for the occasion. At the Portuguese Water National 2 of the get in the stud dog class were longhaired Chihuahuas. At the Mastiff National exhibitors were supplied with a small lanyard that listed their name and Kennel affiliation. It also held a bit of cash and their room key! In this day and age with face book and twitter the lanyard was a great way to find that face book friend that you hadn’t actually met. Most of the clubs have a rescue parade with not a dry eye in the house by the time the last dog enters the ring. There are the Parade of Champions and or Titleholders, which are another way for people to show off their dogs.
The Poodle Club of America probably has the best venue, with indoor sod, topiaries of giant white Poodles, giant screen TV’s with live video seen anywhere in the arena and held at the same location for the past 8 years. An old favorite at the DCA is the Wine Party. A new feature at DCA this year was the Decorated Dals. They raised a lot of money and generated a lot of excitement but neither one of these events included the dogs. I believe once upon a time Dalmatians were considered circus dogs and as we all know they are performing some ridiculous feat every day so imagine a ring full of these spotted wonders acting like clowns and having fun. To add some fun entertainment to a National doesn’t need to cost a lot of money it just requires some volunteers and an ability to think outside the box.

We purchased our first show dogs after they had been named and registered. We changed the call name of our male dog, which the breeder had been calling “Macy”. It reminded me of a weekend at the shopping mall and every time I heard it I wanted to say “Where’s Nordy”? Our Macy became Baley, a name that suited his very mellow, laid back personality to a tee and our weekends became enveloped by show grounds and dog vendors. The now more infrequent trips to Macy’s or Nordstrom were focused on finding skirts with pockets and good shoes to run in.
a rose by any other name BY MICHELE
N
a m e s . W e spend almost as much time on them as we do researching pedigrees in preparation for an upcoming breeding. From the first dog we own through the selection of a kennel name to finding
WRATH the perfect name for that hopeful pup that is peeping up as us from the litter box, the naming process is an art unto itself. And the question remains, does the name make the dog or does the dog make the name?
If you survive your first show dogs, the next step in the progression is the selection of a kennel name. The first thing folks told us was keep it short. Until recently, there was a finite limit to the length of an AKC registered name and every character in the allotted 30 spaces mattered. There are several different approaches to the selection of kennel names. Some kennel names are cleverly chosen for their connection back to the owners. Pisces for the breeder’s astrological sign, Rambler because the breeder’s name Nash, St. Florian because it was the patron saint of Fire Fighters. Others named their kennel after a place they lived. Proctor for a street in Chicago, Snow Hill for a small town in North Carolina, and Tramac Place after the family home in Washington. Other kennel names tie back to something that has affinity with the breed. Fiacre and Hansom, two kennel names of prominent Dalmatian breeders are
the named after two distinct styles of carriages. Other names are whimsical – SpotHaven, Lotsaspots, Roadpartner, Motion Maker – these names all speak to a characteristic of the breed. We selected SunnyOaks - it was the street we lived on when we got our first two dogs. With the selection of a kennel name, often quickly comes the breeding of one’s first litter. And another milestone in the naming process – the selection of a litter theme. I am always so impressed by the creativity and thought that goes into this process. The Presidents litters, the rock stars litters, one person even themed a litter after automobiles. And the names always seem to fit the puppies so well. How do these people do this? I am usually never this organized. I am the person whose 7 week puppy pictures are captioned “Red” or “Green” or “Blue” for the color of their rick rack and whose puppies think they were named after a box of Crayola’s. There was one time, however when we did select a theme. We are College Basketball fans in a part of the country where it is almost not optional to be otherwise. Our chosen team played it’s cross-town rival the night this litter was conceived. The team went on to win the NCAA championship, so what could be better than a basketball theme for this litter. The expectant dam took us to heart and as my husband was weighing the sixth of seven males to be born in this litter, he turned to me and said, “Well Honey, we’ve got our basketball team”. I have nothing against male puppies, but
E Dalmatians | www.edalmatians.com
next time I think we will pick a more co-ed idea – or go back to that box of Crayola’s! We carried out the theme through to their registered names, which brings me back to the title of this article. The selection of the puppy’s registered name often feels like the single most important thing one can do to set the fate of an aspiring show dog. It’s almost like picking the right suit for a job interview. What is it about a name? Does the name make the dog or does the dog make the name? We’ve had some notable names in our breed. Did the breeder who named Spotlight Spectacular know that this bitch would go on to be the biggest winning Dog ever in our breed? Did Amera’s Picturesque know that she would be picturesque enough to win the National Specialty, the Top 20 and multiple Best in Shows? Did Snow Hill Fireflies at Rockstar know that she would indeed be a Rockstar – herself also a Top 20 and National Specialty winner? Did TCJ N Satin’s Star Appeal know that he would not only be the Apple of his owner’s eyes but also of the many judges who rewarded this dog with multiple National Specialty and Best in Show wins? Did Alfredrich Handsome Tall and Dark know that he would live up to his name and go on to be a National Specialty winner and top producer in our breed? And did Quiksilver’s Ryhthm and Blues know to stay cool and croon his way to Number 1 like his namesake Bing Crosby?
It makes you think, doesn’t it? When we name our puppies we try to find a name that is clever and bespeaks the dog’s personality. We try to envision how the name of this dog will look at the top of an ad commemorating that notable win that we just know is in that dog’s future. We’ve had dogs Stealing the Stage, Spicen’ It Up and Ready To Rumba. We’ve have a Bit O’ Blarney, Makin’ Whopee, and a Sweetheart Deal. None of these names tied back to any litter theme. Which brings me back to the basketball litter. Cameron Indoor Stadium is often regarded as one of the best sports venues in the nation. It is a small stadium with less than 9,000 seats. Students at Duke University camp out for weeks, sometimes months on end, for the privilege of standing 1,600 co-eds deep in the student’s section. These Cameron Crazies as they are called, are noted for their unbounded energy, zany face paint and attire and wild antics in support of the team. The last puppy in the litter to be named was a very handsome male. This puppy was and is a very fun loving, affectionate puppy, with a seemingly endless supply of energy and enthusiasm. Guess what we named him? Of course, he’s a Cameron Crazy! Does the dog make the name or does the name make the dog? We’ll let you know!

Have you been receiving our E Blasts?? Important information for our Subscribers & Advertisers
To ensure that you receive our E Blast notifications for Specials, deadline reminders & release announcements, please check your email settings & filters. We use an email service to send all E Blast announcements to our Subscribers & Advertisers & it may not be “recognized” by your mail service. This will result in a “BLOCK MAIL or SPAM on your end . You will not receive any of our E Blasts if this is the case. If you have not been receiving our E Mail Announcements, this may be the problem & can only be corrected on your end. Some servers will not deliver the email at all (you’ll never know!) & some will filter it into your SPAM folder. We have noticed this most frequently with those who have Comcast email accounts.
SO?...what should you do? 1) Check your Spam mail frequently & if our E Blasts end up in your SPAM folder, select us as “NOT SPAM”. 2) Check your filter settings on your E mail account to allow our Emails to go through & not be blocked. 3) Check the specific E Mag website in which you have subscribed to or advertised with FREQUENTLY as all the information we send you in an E Blast regarding Specials, Deadline reminders, etc. is ALWAYS posted on the sites. Our E Blast notifications are a courtesy to our loyal Subscribers & Advertisers to keep you informed & updated. By visiting the websites on a regular basis, you can always recieve the information that we send out.
We hope this helps! E Dalmatians | www.edalmatians.com
