Finland ~

Endless Days with Bullies

By

Carolyn Alexander

Being invited to Finland to judge their major Bull Terrier specialty and invitational show was a thrill. While we have traveled a great deal and both lived in Europe, neither of us had been to Finland. We also didn’t know a lot about Finland and finding travel guides wasn’t easy. Eventually, we were able to gather enough information to realize that there is a great deal to do. We opted to go a few days early to get our time zones in sync and sightsee in Helsinki, and stay a week after the show for more sightseeing.

BT club coordinator Frej Stenfors helped set up hotel reservations and patiently answered a few hundred questions. The car rental which we made was rather pricy, but we were to find that overall, Finland, like other Scandinavian countries, tends to be expensive for travelers. We were slated to fly out of Monterey about 11am, but about 7:30am, United called about flight delays in San Francisco, urging us to come quickly to catch an earlier flight, so we didn’t miss our connections. Since we were packed anyway, we dashed to the airport. Subsequently, we had several hours in SFO, but that was made reasonably comfortable by having breakfast, reading the newspaper and checking email at the international lounge. Our flight into Frankfurt was the usual packed-like-sardines cattlecar express. Despite the jammed conditions, the movies were reasonably fun and the food was decent. Because we were entering the European Union in Frankfurt, we cleared customs there. The lounge in Frankfurt included a welcome option for showers. The lounge also had some great food, wines and beer. David passed on the bratwurst and sauerkraut, which was his mistake, but enjoyed a couple of their excellent beers. The flight to Helsinki was crowded, but comfortable. The lunch was reasonably tasty, and offered with free wine or beer. Lufthansa hospitality shines again.

Frej met us and took us into the city. Our hotel was basic, but nicely located, only a short walk to one of the main tram, subway, bus stations. For the next day and a half we toured Helsinki streets, shops and museums, using a day pass that got us on all the trams and the ferry over to the incredible sea fortress, Suomenlinna. Helsinki has many interesting sites, but historic, dramatic Suomenlinna is first and foremost not-to-be-missed. On Friday morning, we picked up a rental car, met Frej and headed off into the countryside. Mid afternoon, we arrived at the Kalajärvi rural lake compound, near the small town of Peräseinäjoki. Our lodging was a charming knotty pine cabin, which reminded me of cabins in Minnesota, where as a child, I’d stayed with my parents. The cottage was stocked with snacks, juice, cider and beer. And we had a private sauna! We were delighted! We went to the lodge for a light dinner, returned for a sauna, a glass of wine and went to bed early. Saturday was wet and cold. Sunday would be windy and cooler.

E Bull Terriers | www.ebullterriers.com

The show was held in a covered, semi-enclosed area, which provided basic protection, but most humans and some of the dogs were bundled up. Saturday included the puppy classes, veterans, Miniature Bull Terriers, and the invitational open show. Afterward the club served sparking wine and the festive mood accelerated. The club dinner was delicious with good wine. A successful auction sparked by Anne Ericksson’s enthusiastic humor and a few chorus line kicks followed.

Nina & Dan Tudor’s famous “Radog” It was then 10pm at night and light as here at 6pm. David started talking with visitors and had a few glasses of a nice liquor called salmiakkikossu, which is Finnish vodka made with licorice and Turkish pepper. It is truly pleasant and goes down very easily. At a nearby campfire with some of the coordinators, I had some wine and tasted some delicious sausages and cheese. Discovering it was nearly 1am, I went back to the Lodge for David and we went to the cabin for a few hours rest.

Night is more of a concept than a reality during Finnish summers. We have experienced the long light of Scottish summers, but Kalajärvi, Finland is further north. A soft darkness signals night from about 1 to 3am. We were glad we had packed eye masks. Even with the partying Bull Terrier folk, Kalajärvi is peaceful. The quiet was disturbed only by the droning of the occasional mosquito. Sunday, we had a number of observers, including other lake visitors and their Bull Dogs (including some adorable puppies), Goldens, etc. While waiting to start, we checked out prize and sales tables. The club brought out a new black tee shirt, which despite not needing tees, we had to buy one. The design was part of a club competition, won by Anne Ericksson. Since critiques are required for each dog, it turned into a rather long day. In addition to placements and critiques, I had to identify dogs who would return for movement and best head competition. The construction and conditioning of most of the Bull Terriers was somewhere between very good to outstanding. My impression was that these dogs get real, regular exercise and that the breeding programs are moderate and concerned with preserving body quality as well as head quality.

Heads were also generally very good. A number of dogs had outstanding expression, width and depth of muzzle. The heads were generally strong and to standard, without being overdone or at the other extreme, thin and old fashioned.

For movement, I was not really surprised that the number of dogs who had received my ribbon and permission to come back was considerable. With such solid bodies in terms of build and in terms of conditioning and muscling, these Bull Terriers exhibited typy, jaunty movement with purposeful drive and good reach. I moved each dog to again see down and back and side gait. Showmanship was also generally quite good. No one was wearing Fifth Avenue suits or gowns, but everyone was comfortable. Most of the bullies were well behaved, clean and were enjoying being out showing. David judged adult showmanship and found many worthy competitors. He wanted to have a finalist competition as there were a number of people who really showed extremely well. By the end, we were all so cold, that the coordinators asked that he simply award the trophy to the one he felt had done the best job, and that went to one of the mini exhibitors. Everyone went to warm up and eat. We had tasty pizza at the lodge and talked with visitors from Lithuania and Estonia. .

Finland, Continued Kadri was a marvelous guide, who could not only tell us about the area and history, but also what it was like to grow up and live under Communist Russian domination. It was an extraordinary experience!

We loved our comfortable cabin in the pines and hated to leave on Monday morning. The following week was a fast paced visit to the Petäjäveden church built in 1763 (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Savonlenna and the impressive Olavinlinna castle (known for summer operatic performances), the world’s largest wooden Christian church in Kerimäki, the Spa Hotel Imatran Kylpylä (a castle overlooking the Vuoksi river gorge), the Iatran Kirkot (the church of the Three Crosses), Karelia, Porvoo (with the quaint shore houses, another UNESCO World Heritage Site), Turku and the archipelago of islands that extend toward Sweden, the historical site of Rikalanmäki and the exceptional Seurasaaren Open Air Museum. Returning to the Helsinki area, we were invited to Nina Stromsholm’s home for a wonderful salmon dinner with many Bull Terrier friends attending. Nina’s BT helped host the evening. We also caught a boat over to Tallinn, Estonia, where we were met by BT owner, exhibitor, Veterinarian, Dr Kadri Kaaranees. Kadri grew up in Tallinn and was our expert guide. She took us to a wonderful local restaurant, shops and bakeries, avoiding the crowded tourist places.

The last dog show…the last day… Anne Eriksson worked for the Finnish Kennel Club for 25 years before joining Eukanuba in Helsinki. She directs the breeding commission and judges’ education, judges junior handling, is a writer, editor, and in her spare time teaches handling classes. Anne took us to the Kotkan Ruusu International All Breed show in Lauantai, near the Russian border. 2500 plus dogs were entered over two days, with judges from all over the globe. Bull Terriers were not entered the only day we could come, but it was interesting to watch breeds which are not well known here, like Spanish Water Dogs and Lagotto Ramagnolo (Italian truffle dogs). The shows were laid out similarly to shows here. However, ring ropes were just pink tapes lying on the ground. They seemed to work well.

En route back, we stopped to visit with Annika Kurittu in Kouvola, who is active in the BT club and had been doing check-in for the BT club at the show, when we first met her. Besides loving bullies, Annika is a wonderful cook and generous hostess. We enjoyed fresh salad, broiled salmon, potatoes, rhubarb dessert, and other home made goodies, with wine and some good Finnish beer. The visit was especially enjoyable because it we were able to have a time to talk with Annika and Anne, and have a little play with bullies Pearl and Jim.

The next morning, our Lufthansa flight was routine. Unfortunately in Frankfurt, TSA initiated a new procedure that had us checking in four different times, standing in long lines each time. Some agents apologized for the lack of organization. Others were rude. The return was another filled-to-the-gills flight. In the final segment, after our 26 minute flight to Monterey, United took an astounding 50 minutes to get bags out to passengers. Travel can be so much fun!

Despite the relative lack of comfort on the trans Atlantic flights and TSA’s latest creative way to make tired people even more frustrated and unhappy, our enthusiasm for travel and being around Bull Terriers and their people continues unabated. A beautiful country of colorful towns and countryside, old fortresses and castles, sparkling lakes, Finland will be locked in our memories mostly because of the nice people and their sweet, handsomely constructed Bull Terriers!

but for now, we are happy with our memories of all a lovely trip and beautiful, healthy Bull Terriers!

There are still many places we didn’t get to see, like the medieval Häme castle and the Karelian Open Air Museum. We never saw an elk, though there are thousands (and I mean thousands) of signs everywhere warning drivers about them.

By the way, there’s hundreds maybe thousands of speed traps there too. Anne kept telling us we didn’t want to see either an elk or an officer, but I think we missed a major tourist attraction… the elks that is. So hopefully, we’ll get to go back,

Advertising Made Easy In our E Publications

June Krukenkamp Editor

Advertising should not be a confusing process. Many people seem to be intimidated or confused about advertising in an electronic magazine. We want to make advertising easy for you so that you can show off your dog(s) in our E Breed Magazines. We would like to provide you with some step by step instructructions & offer some helpful tips to make it easy ,affordable & fun for you to advertising your dog in our E Breed magazines.

We live in an “electronic age”. New technology is growing rapidly and it can be very hard to keep up with all the new concepts, gadgets & modern services that are now common place in our society. We have changed the way we talk on the phone, listen to music, watch movies on TV & obtain our day to day information. Our communication has changed too as we find ourselves emailing, texting, blogging & tweeting to “socially connect” with each other and gather information. The inventions of Cell phones, I pods, Blue Ray devices, computers & more has thrust us into a technology driven world that we are now part of (despite many who are still kicking & screaming in protest) With all this “modernizing” of how we communicate & entertain ourselves, it is no surprise that the publishing world is changing too.

Books are available now to be read electronically with their new high tech devices (Kindle, I pad, etc) and the magazine world is jumping on board! I came to the realization many years back that Dog Publications should integrate in this “high tech” world. People should be able to advertise their dogs, breedings, wins & more in ONE place for the world to see for free....the ULTIMATE network! Many people have websites & blogs showing off their dogs, photos but viewers have to go to many different sites to view dogs & many just don’t. Our E Breed publications are easily accessible & our subscriber base is growing daily. People are realizing the value of this format to “show off” their dogs and brag on their wins & more.

So? How do you advertise in our E Breed Publications? It’s easy..
