Adventure Travel Series Grand Canyon Raft Trip: A Confluence of Art & Science

Exploring & Travel

Vermillion cliffs, white water, turquoise pools, and emerald springs await. Witness the Grand Canyon’s majesty from a perspective few experiencelooking up at the canyon’s cliffs from a raft on the Colorado River. An unforgettable blend of serene landscapes and thrilling whitewater creates a world-class experience. Join UNLV geologist Peg Rees and artist/naturalist Sharon Schafer in a week-long exploration of the Grand Canyon by motorized raft. Taking eight days to cover nearly 200 miles of the river through nearly 2 billion years of the earth’s history allows plenty of time for photographing and learning about the natural and cultural history and geologic evolution of the region. Each day you will have the opportunity to take short hikes to explore amazing places such as the Little Colorado River, Deer Creek Falls, Elves Chasm, and Red Wall Cavern. Nights are spent camping along the river, enjoying delicious meals, watching the stars, and falling asleep to sounds of rushing water. A bus will carry the group from Las Vegas to a hotel near Marble Canyon where we spend

the night before transferring to Lee’s Ferry to launch the rafts. At the end of the rafting journey, travel by helicopter from Whitmore Wash to the canyon’s rim where we meet our plane for the short flight back to Las Vegas. The Grand Canyon Raft Trip is facilitated through a National Park Service authorized concessioner. A $825 deposit will hold your spot until Mar 10, 2015, when balance in full is due. Additional information is available at continuingeducation.unlv. edu/grand-canyon-raft-trip. Fee includes: roundtrip transportation, one-night hotel lodging, all meals and beverages while on the river (except for sodas and alcohol), twoperson tents, all camping gear, and dry bags. Not included: meals on the bus and at the Marble Canyon hotel, preferred beverages on the river trip, gratuities to the river company’s guides, and trip cancellation insurance. Trip cancellation insurance is recommended. Cancellation policy: Refund less $450 until Mar 10, 2015. No refund without replacement after Mar 10, 2015. Day Trips Southern Nevada is home to four spectacular national wildlife refuges. All are memorable both for their landscapes and their unique, complex ecosystems. Leader Bruce Lund is a botanist and biologist with more than a decade guiding field trips and teaching natural history programs in Southern Nevada.

Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, west of Las Vegas, is best known for its magnificent red sandstone cliffs, but also has lesser known treasures including dinosaur tracks, fossils, pictographs, petroglyphs, and evidence of Indian encampments. Spend the day with a geologist/naturalist guide, learning about the geology, history, hydrology, and archaeology of Red Rock to better understand the complicated forces shaping the area over hundreds of millions of years. The tour will make stops at key geologic points throughout Red Rock, where you will learn about and observe sandstone and limestone deposits, thrust faults, cross-bedding, precariously balanced rocks and their relation to earthquake potential, and desert washes. You will also get a chance to see an old sandstone quarry, pictographs and petroglyphs (and learn the difference), an agave roasting pit, and a fossil bed. Stops will include Calico Basin, the Visitor Center, Calico Hills, Sandstone Quarry, High Point Overlook, Willow Springs east and west, and the trail ride parking lot and corrals. Fee includes: roundtrip transportation, entrance to Red Rock Canyon NCA, boxed lunch, and two bottles of water per person. Desert Survival Skills: Basic

Bruce Lund Sat | May 23 | 8:30am-4:30pm | $95 UNLV Paradise Campus, Back Parking Lot | 151EX1160

Learn what it takes to survive in the Mojave Desert back country until help arrives. Spend the day participating in hands-on outdoor experiments and covering topics including emergency procedures, water use, shelter, and proper preparation. Your instructor, a state-certified Environmental Educator and Planner, will dispel survival myths and cover basic safety and survival techniques for traveling in the desert either in a vehicle or on foot.

Desert National Wildlife Refuge The wild life in Las Vegas is second-rate compared to the REAL WILDLIFE of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge just 20 miles north of the Strip. This largest national wildlife refuge (2,300 square miles) in the lower 48 states encompasses the Sheep Mountain Range and was established in 1936 for the protection of the desert bighorn sheep. We will start with an hour visit to the new visitor center and short easy trail walk to see some of the wetland habitat restoration. Then we will hop into the vans for a drive on back roads up and over the Sheep Mountains through spectacular mountain, desert, and forest scenery with occasional stops for stretches and close looks at wildflowers, birds, and (if we’re lucky) bighorn sheep. Fee includes: roundtrip transportation Bruce Lund Sat | Jun 13 | 8am-5pm | $95 UNLV Paradise Campus, Back Parking Lot | 152EX1227

Exploring & Travel

Amazing as it may seem, 26 plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth live within the 23,000 acre Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, about two hours west of Las Vegas near Pahrump, Nevada. This is the greatest concentration of endemic species in the United States. We will meet some of them as we explore some of the 50 springs and seeps, enchanting marshlands, streams, and ash/mesquite groves in the middle of a harsh landscape of Mojave Desert alkali flats. Expect to walk two to three miles on boardwalks and maintained trails with spectacular mountain and desert views and to meet wildflowers, birds, butterflies, and dragonflies (which we will net and release).

Valley of Fire Hot Spots

Exploring & Travel

Valley of Fire State Park gets its name from the beautiful red sandstone which resembles fire early in the morning and at sunset. Located about 1.5 hours northeast of Las Vegas, the park’s striking geology takes us back to when Southern Nevada was part of a vast Jurassic sand dune desert. First stop of the day is Atlatl Rock to see an excellent panel of Indian petroglyphs, followed by stops at a beautiful rock arch and petrified wood from the Triassic period. Arrive next at the Visitor Center to view the extensive interpretive displays and exhibits for an overview of the park. Before stopping for lunch, enjoy a short half mile roundtrip trail hike to Mouse’s Tank, a natural basin flanked by red sandstone and examples of prehistoric petroglyphs. After lunch we will stop at the Rainbow Vista viewpoint for a great panoramic view of the colorful terrain. At our next stop, White Domes, we will do another one mile hike through a narrow slot canyon, and see an old movie set from the 1966 movie, “The Professionals.” After the hike we will stop at Elephant Rock and a large petrified log as we make our way out of the park. We will end our day taking the scenic Northshore Road back to campus. Fee includes: roundtrip transportation, entrance to Valley of Fire State Park, boxed lunch, and two bottles of water per person. Paint Like the Old World Masters I Practice painting techniques and work with devices employed regularly by the old world masters. Most students of art have likely heard about under painting, dead layers, glazing, camera obscura, and camera lumina, but very few university or even art institute programs make time for students to actually practice these techniques. Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical masters used many ingenious methods for creating depth, gauging perspective, and using available pigments to best advantage. The processes learned by practice in this class will change the way you look at all art and art making. Supply list will be provided.

Disability Services Through an active and continuing affirmative action program, the university provides equal opportunity and treatment in employment, admissions, and all programs in an effort to avoid discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, and disability. If you have a documented disability requiring assistance, you will need to contact the Disability Resource Center to coordinate necessary academic accommodations. The Disability Resource Center is located on the main campus and can be reached at 702-895-0866.

Student Privacy In accordance with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas policy and the U.S. Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), UNLV vigorously protects the privacy of student education records. UNLV does not release private records of individual students, such as grades and class schedules, without prior written consent of the student. As permitted under federal law, the sole exception to the above practice is the release of “directory” information considered to be public in nature and not generally deemed to be an invasion of privacy. At UNLV, the following categories are defined as “directory” information: name, address, email address, telephone number, dates of attendance, full-time/parttime status, academic major, college and grade level, heights and weights of members of athletic teams, academic honors, other academic institutions recently attended, participation in UNLV organizations, and degrees earned and dates attended.

Cancellation Policy We reserve the right to cancel class or make any changes to the schedule deemed necessary in order to provide our students with the best educational experience. We recognize you may occasionally need to cancel a registration. Unless a separate policy is stated for a specific class or classes, the following applies to all cancellations and refunds: Requests for refunds must be made in writing and must be submitted at least three business days before the first day of class; 100% of the registration fee will be refunded minus a $10 administrative fee, and at no time will the amount refunded exceed the amount of the original registration fee. Refund requests should include your name, the course name and number, and a reason for your request. Your request can be emailed to continuing. education@unlv.edu, faxed to 702-895-4195, or mailed to Continuing Education, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway, Box 451019, Las Vegas, NV 89154-1019. The complete refund policy can be found by visiting continuingeducation. unlv.edu/registration-policies.

Wait Lists All of our classes have a maximum number of seats available for registration. With our enrollments increasing and courses becoming more and more popular, we are seeing more classes than ever filling up. Once a class fills up, we will have to put you on a wait list. If a seat in the class becomes available or if we have enough people on the wait list to open a new section, we will contact you. Register early to assure yourself a seat in the class.

Books & Supplies Unless otherwise noted in the course description, all books and class-specific supplies are included in your registration payment.

CEUs A number of courses in this catalog offer Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The Continuing Education Unit is a standard unit of measure for quantifying continuing adult education and training activities. One CEU equals 10 contact hours of participation in an organized education/training experience under responsible, qualified direction and instruction.

Attendance Policy Attendance is required for all Continuing Education classes. Please communicate with your instructor on what to do if you need to miss a class.

Student Code of Conduct A detailed Student Code of Conduct policy is available on the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs’ website. Students are responsible for adhering to this code of conduct while participating in all UNLV programs and services.

Copyright Policy The university requires all members of the university community to familiarize themselves and to follow copyright and fair-use requirements. You are individually and solely responsible for violations of copyright and fair-use laws.
