We are excited to help you reach your learning goals, whether it is to learn something new or do something better. Continuing Education’s leisure and recreational courses and activities are comprised of excellent content and quality instruction from experienced professionals. Every semester you will find the best and most popular classes for your personal enrichment. This semester we are pleased to offer new courses to enhance your skills and fulfill your aspirations. If you want to be a better you, you can learn how to market yourself, the secrets of masterful negotiations, or holiday party slow dancing. We are also expanding our options for seniors to get involved and stay active. New courses include how to write your personal story; horticulture therapy; and senior dance, aqua, tai chi, and yoga. Acting, Photo & Film RADIO & TV VOICE-OVER WORKSHOP If radio and TV commercial voice-overs were that easy, more people would be doing them. If you are serious about finding out if you have what it takes to make it in this lucrative and highly competitive industry, this course is for you. Contrary to what you might think, voice-over has very little to do with your voice! It’s being able to read a script and make it sound like you’re not reading. This four-week course is not for the faint of heart. It is conducted and taught exactly the way the business runs in the real world. FYI: There is a huge difference between local and national level of voice-over performers. So, to give yourself the best opportunity of competing in any of the voice-over markets (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and all regions in between), it is important to learn the business from someone who is in it on a national level. IMPROVE YOURSELF THROUGH IMPROV Calling all public speakers, sales people, as well as practicing and aspiring actors. Improve your public speaking, confidence, imagination and collaborative skills in whatever career you are pursuing. Improv will improve your stage presence, presentation skills and ability to think on your feet through a variety of fun and challenging improvisational theater exercises. The course starts with an assessment of students’ needs and goals, then provides insight into their specific challenges as each class progresses. DESTINATION FILMFEST™ PART I: Storytelling Through Scripting & Production Calling all practicing and aspiring writers, producers, directors, actors, managers and designers who want to become demystified about the production, marketing and distribution process of filmmaking through a five-week, intensive, hands-on journey. As an ensemble, you will develop, write, manage, cast, shoot, edit (for those who enroll in Destination Filmfest (DFF) Part II, see below) and submit the product from this workshop to at least one film festival worldwide. Learn what all of the buttons and dials on your camera will do and how to use them to make better photographs of your friends, family, vacations or simply art work for your walls. Your instructor, Carl Hinkle, is a retired US Navy photographer and is now the Manager of Casey’s Cameras. Have you dreamed of making a low-budget movie, but assumed you didn’t have enough time, money, or know how? This course will show you how to make an ultra-ULTRA low budget independent movie you can film in four days. Former Hollywood screenwriter of Quigley Down Under and Emmy-winner L.A Law, John Hill will show you some tricks of the trade in how to plan, write, and film a movie in two weekends, for close to no money. The instructor brought his years of screenwriting and production experience to his recent ultra-low-budget movie, The Great White Loan Shark, an 82-minute feature he wrote, directed, and filmed in ONE day. STONE CARVING Do you feel connected to the mountains that surround us and feel adventurous? Explore the direct carving method of working with stone, which means that you do not work from models or sketches. You will work with the natural shape of the stone as you learn the use of carving tools and finishing techniques along with 3D design. No previous art background is required. Use of studio tools is included. You will need to bring protective eyeglasses or safety goggles to the first class. Expect to pay approximately $70-$100 for the stone you choose to work with. Your instructor has been sculpting for 40 years and teaching for 30. She has exhibited her work throughout the United States, including one woman and group shows. Capture some history and some mystery at the Walking Box Ranch. Located just outside of Searchlight, early film stars Clara Bow and Rex Bell made the Walking Box their home. The surrounding Joshua tree forest, old ranch house, barn, and relics and ruins of earlier days as a working ranch, make this a wonderful locale for painting and sketching. Set up your easel, sketch, paint and take some photos for later inspiration. Watercolor, pastels, sketching and photography are all recommended. What does an artist do when her favorite nonprofit organization runs out of wall space for murals? She sticks her neck out and let’s them paint her head. Klip it 4 Kids collects hair long enough to make wigs for children who have lost their own hair to cancer treatment. Hair too short? Sponsorships get many donations for people to shave their hair, and it is an expression of solidarity. 6

GLASS ART GALORE! Interested in experimenting with glass art but not sure where to start? Sample fusing, stained glass etching and more! Learn to work with clear and colored glass for a variety of projects that you get to keep. Specific topics of instruction include cutting glass, safety, creating stained glass sun catchers, using lead and copper foil, fusing glass, using a kiln, etching designs on glass, and creating a mosaic trivet or plaque. FIGURE DRAWING FOR BEGINNERS You can draw people! Learn how to draw the human figure using a basic step-by-step method. You will start by sketching figures based on simple, underlying shapes, and then add in the details. NEW – MAKING AN ADIRONDACK CHAIR Once you’ve relaxed in one of these chairs, you’ll understand their popularity! We’ll be building a classic Adirondack chair for your home, learning many new woodworking techniques (and using some different tools!) along the way. This classic chair design is both comfortable and gorgeous, and is sure to become the most coveted chair in your back yard! Students can choose the wood they use, as well as the finish they want to apply. Traditionally, these are built using softwoods and are painted white. But building this chair in a gorgeous hardwood allows it to become a piece of art within your home. This is a terrific class for refining your woodworking skills! BASIC WOODWORKING Even if you’ve never touched a hammer before, learn how to work with wood safely and with artistic vision. You will learn how to setup, use and maintain all of the major woodworking tools including the tablesaw, jointer, planer, drill press, bandsaw, and stationary belt sander. NEW – I KNOW WHAT I LIKE, BUT WHAT’S IT WORTH? (An introduction to determining value in art) Oil, watercolor, prints of all sorts; how do you start to sort out what you have and what it’s worth? Before you hire a professional appraiser, put your stuff on E-bay, or contact your insurance agent, do a little enlightened investigating on your own. An important part of getting the right answers is knowing the right questions to ask. Join artist and appraiser Gabbie Hirsch and knowledgeable guest speakers in this new class that will start you on the road to being able to determine the value of what you see and like. We’ll start with the many different media you may find, and how to look at them. MATTING & FRAMING BASICS Learn how to matt and frame your photographs and artwork like a professional. In this half-day workshop, you will matt and frame an image of your choosing and leave with a piece ready for hanging as well as the satisfaction of knowing how to do-it-yourself. BOOK AND PAPER CONSERVATION WORKSHOP SERIES (2011-2012) In this series of hands-on workshops, you will learn the fundamentals of professional paper mending and book repair. Laboratory work will provide practical hands-on experience with basic preservation and conservation techniques, coupled with lectures focused on library science and preservation theory. Students are encouraged to bring to class, personal books and other items to work with. All persons interested in this field are welcome. No prior experience is necessary. BIRDING AND NATURAL HISTORY ALONG THE UPPER MUDDY RIVER VALLEY The upper Moapa River Valley is a little-visited but ecologically important area of Southern Nevada. Conservation interest in this area has been highlighted by the recent establishment of the Warm Springs Natural Area adjacent to the Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, was established in 1979 as the first National Wildlife Refuge to secure habitat for an endangered fish, the Moapa dace. This small fish is only found in the headwaters of the Muddy River. The Warm Springs Natural Area, owned by the Southern Nevada Water Authority, is home to a wide variety of fish, birds and other species. The 1,218-acre Natural Area provides a habitat for birds such as the southwestern willow flycatcher, yellow-billed cuckoo and vermillion flycatcher. Led by birding expert Scott Page and assisted by SNWA biologist David Syzdek, we will explore, studying the springs, pools, and streams on the refuge, and traversing sections of the natural area looking for migratory and breeding birds. Gain a better understanding of the relationships among land use, hydrology and conservation biology in this interesting area. Expect to walk up to three miles, often over uneven terrain. MOCIDADE REBELDE (UNLV BRAZILIAN ENSEMBLE) Mocidade Rebelde is a drumming ensemble that focuses specifically on the percussion music of Brazil. The ensemble is taught in a “by rote” style, which means that the instructor will demonstrate techniques, rhythms and stylistic details to the student rather than giving written music to the student to learn. This is how percussionists in the “batteria escolas” (drumming schools) have traditionally been taught in Brazil. Absolute beginners through professional drummers and percussionists are welcome. This is a fun and exciting ensemble to work with, energetically stimulating and therapeutic for those who would like to release some stress. All we ask is that you bring a good attitude and enthusiasm to the group. All instruments are provided. UNLV NEW HORIZONS BAND The UNLV New Horizons Band is a recently formed group that is part of an international movement, started at the Eastman School of Music, to get adults re-involved with music. BEGINNING GUITAR

Formed in January 1987, the band’s 70-plus members range in age from high school to senior citizen. If you want to have fun and practice your skills in a concert setting, this course is for you. The band plays a wide variety of music including marches, show and film scores, along with classic and contemporary wind ensemble repertoire performing on and off-campus each semester. To get the most benefit from this course, you should be relatively proficient on your instrument and have at least one year or more of high school playing experience. There is no formal audition procedure for acceptance into the group at this time.

The newly formed Las Vegas Civic Orchestra is open to any UNLV student or Las Vegas area resident who wishes to perform in an orchestra. If you have high school, college or professional orchestra playing experience and want to have fun and practice your playing skills in a concert group setting, this group is for you. The orchestra will perform a wide variety of standard symphonic repertoire from Early Baroque through Contemporary and will perform concerts each semester. Everyone wants to watch wildlife, but what is the best way to do it? At this workshop you’ll learn basic tips for getting the most out of your viewing experience. Learn how to combine wildlife viewing with your regular outdoor activities. Get familiar with animal tracks and other signs of animal presence. Know how to increase your odds for sighting success. Basic ethics, safety, and tools of the “sport” will be discussed. There will also be a slideshow on the animals you are most likely to see in the Mojave Desert, as well as some taxidermy specimens! GEMOLOGY FOR THE LAYMAN If you love gems, but are tired of taking what the store or TV salesperson says on faith alone, this class will make you a better informed consumer. We will discuss names and measurements of gems, their basic properties, as well as how they are identified, cut and fashioned into jewelry. Discover the wealth of information that a simple 10x magnifier can tell you about a gem’s history and value. Special topics include synthetic gems, gem treatments or enhancements, organic and fossil gems, those with special optical properties like color change and iridescence, and how gems are formed in the earth. Throughout the course you will see pictures and/or actual specimens of a wide variety of gems from colored stones to diamonds. HANDGUN SAFETY: AT HOME & AT THE RANGE Whether you have little to no experience with pistols or just desire a refresher, this all-day workshop will cover basic gun and ammunition terminology and functioning. BASIC DOG OBEDIENCE TRAINING PROGRAM Establish a lasting bond with your dog through proper control on and off a leash and by eliminating behavior problems. Commands to be taught include: heel, automatic sit, sit-stay, down, down-stay, come, no drop it, leave it, and okay. You will also learn how to deter jumping, barking, house soiling, and more. The first class is taught without your dog and will be 1.5 hours long. You will need to bring proof that your dog has received all shots. A supply list will be discussed at the first class meeting. PET FIRST AID AND CPR

If you and your pet have already taken and mastered a basic dog obedience class, it’s time to learn some more advanced skills. A review of the basic commands of sit, stay, heel, and come will then be enhanced with increased distractions, use of hand signals, and limited use of vocal commands. Your dog must be at least 16 weeks old and have proof of all shots. Please bring proof of shots and proof of participation in a basic dog obedience class to the first day of class. The first class will be taught without your pet and will be 1.5 hours long.

Be prepared in the event of a pet accident. Learn pet CPR and choking management, pet bandaging techniques, and how to build a pet first-aid kit. This class is hands-on, using stuffed pets to simulate theories and pet emergencies. Your instructor has been an EMT, CPR Instructor, First Aid Instructor, Licensed Physical Therapy Assistant and Massage Therapist for more than ten years. CANINE “GOOD CITIZEN” TRAINING The Canine Good Citizen Training class and exam is a certification program that tests dogs in everyday situations in a relaxed atmosphere. NEW – LIVING IN THE MOJAVE DESERT

This 12-week course is a low-impact, low-intensity workout designed for all ages to improve strength, flexibility and balance. Come and participate in this mind-body practice that is often referred to as “moving meditation.” You will be moving your body slowly, gently, and with awareness, while breathing deeply. Exercises are performed both standing and seated in a chair. Included in the fee will be a prefitness assessment, along with a post-fitness assessment, so that you can track your results. Class will be tailored to your needs and fitness level.

This is an exciting one-day workshop that will take place in the beautiful Red Rock Canyon. It will combine Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) content with outdoor recreation, utilizing hand’s-on experiential learning activities including the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) units that are designed to help participants gain a better understanding of the place where they live: the Mojave Desert. Participants will explore the plants, animals and the cultural history of the Mojave Desert, along with learning the names of several key Mojave Desert species and their adaptations and roles within the ecosystem. Cannon Survey Center Resources Cannon Survey Center operates a computerassisted telephone interviewing (CATI) facility. This system enables precise control over the order of questions and the range of legitimate responses so that invalid or inappropriate responses are avoided. Information is also automatically entered into data files while interviews are being conducted. CSC also maintains a system that creates paper surveys in which information can then be scanned into the computer, eliminating manual data entry. In addition to optical mark recognition (e.g., Scantron forms), this system also provides hand print (ICR), machine print (OCR), and barcode recognition. The CATI system and the scanner system enable CSC to design and execute surveys in a timely manner, save your organization money, and improve data accuracy.

Class Cancellation and Refund Policy • The Division of Educational Outreach reserves the right to cancel any class or make any other changes it deems necessary in order to provide students with the best educational experience possible. • Course fees will be refunded in full if it becomes necessary to cancel a course, however, under no circumstances will the amount refunded exceed the amount of the registration fee. Educational Outreach will not reimburse students for the cost of travel or lodging in the unlikely event that a class is cancelled. Therefore, it is recommended that students traveling to attend classes make travel reservations that are able to be changed, should it become necessary to do so. • Educational Outreach will make all reasonable attempts to notify students of class cancellations or changes, using e-mail, phone, and fax contact information provided by the student at the time of registration. It is recommended you call 895-3394 a day prior to your class to confirm that the class will meet as scheduled. • We recognize you may occasionally need to cancel a registration. If you wish to receive a refund, we must receive a written statement (e-mail, fax, or postal mail) listing the course name and number, and giving the reason for cancellation. Postal mail refund requests should be sent to Educational Outreach, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway, Box 451019, Las Vegas, NV 89154-1019. • Refunds of registration fees paid by credit card will be processed as a credit to the credit card account within seven business days of the cancellation notification. Refunds of registration fees paid by check will require a minimum of six weeks to be processed, to allow sufficient time for the check issued by the student to clear, prior to a refund check being issued. • Unless a separate policy is stated for a specific class or classes, the following applies to all cancellations and refunds: Prior to the first day of class 100 percent of the fee paid will be refunded minus a $10 administrative fee. If class has begun or concluded, refunds are decided on a case-by-case basis by calling 895-3394. All refunds must be done within 14 days of the last class. All of the provisions of the Class Cancellation and Refund Policy are in accordance with relevant Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) rules and regulations adopted and approved by the NSHE Board of Regents. Payment of Fees • Payment must be received at the time of registration. Students are responsible for the payment of all fees associated with each course in which they enroll within the time period specified by UNLV. • Students who fail to pay fees when due, will be required to pay late fees, and any additional penalties established by UNLV.

Failure to pay applicable fees when due will result in referral to an outside collection agency. • The Division of Educational Outreach cooperates with the Clark County District Attorney’s office to prevent bad check losses. A $25 service fee will be assessed for any check that is returned from the bank for any reason. Post-dated or two party checks will not be accepted. Any returned check shall be made good within ten days after notification to the student, or the student will not be permitted to attend any classes. Professional Credit Upon registering for a professional course (real estate or management) for the purpose of obtaining professional credit hours, please include your Nevada license number. Continuing Education Units Some of the courses in this catalog qualify for CEUs (Continuing Education Units). CEUs are a way of measuring and officially recognizing the time and effort you have put into your education for your job or profession. One CEU is equal to 10 hours of instruction. CEUs do not constitute academic credit. They are maintained by the Division of Educational Outreach and provide you with a transcript upon request. So, what do you do with a CEU? As you update your credentials, are in line for a transfer, promotion or evaluation of your current position, or want to make a vocational change or explore a new career, the CEUs demonstrate the time, energy and interest you have shown in broadening your horizons. University of Nevada, Las Vegas Alumni UNLV alumni with a baccalaureate or advanced degree are entitled to a 15 percent discount on ONE select class per semester as deemed by the Educational Outreach office. This discount may only be used by alumni (not their spouses or children). Class Location Most courses are held on the UNLV Paradise campus, but some are held at other locations throughout the county and are identified in the course description. Office Hours The Division of Educational Outreach Information Desk is open Monday through Thursday, 8am-9pm, Friday 8am-5pm, and Saturday 8am-5pm except for university holidays. Please see http://edoutreach.unlv.edu for any exceptions to this schedule. Parking Permit Information Parking permits are required on both the UNLV main campus and the Paradise campus. They are required 7am-7pm, Monday through Thursday and 7am-1pm on Fridays. Parking permits are available in the Educational Outreach office and at the UNLV Parking and Transportation Services Office (895-1300).

After 5pm, students may park in faculty/staff spaces in all lots with parking permits except those located in lots M (north of the Dining Commons and the Student Health Center), I (north of the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies), and G (between Frank and Estella Beam Hall and Tonopah Hall). When parking in metered spaces, you must pay the meter prior to 7pm. Alcohol on Campus Alcohol is not permitted on campus unless specifically for an Educational Outreach course. Students must be able to prove that they are 21 years of age prior to any class that involves alcohol.
