Welcome to the Spring semester of OLLI at UNLV. With the spring comes renewal and re-growth. It is the perfect time to start exploring new areas of interest. OLLI at UNLV is a great avenue for exercising your mind, and creating new friendships. Here at UNLV, we strive to build a community of lifelong learners. You will find members of OLLI at UNLV to be a welcoming group of lively seniors who share a common interest in expanding their knowledge. This semester we are extremely excited to add two new satellite campuses with Humana Henderson and Humana Summerlin. We now have a total of 6 locations in the Las Vegas area, so that we can bring OLLI to your neighborhood. In this issue of the Spring catalog, we have a new section entitled, ”special events.” These are special one-time events, or short discussion groups, that are available to all OLLI members. Welcome to the wonderful world of OLLI - The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNLV. Our program serves retired and semi-retired individuals. Peer-led study groups offer a wide variety of topics to stimulate interests and enhance understandings of our world. No exams, no term papers, just the joy of learning something new. Retiring to Las Vegas in 1993, I discovered then-EXCELL, now OLLI at UNLV, in 1995 and have been an active participant ever since. The program has grown from four study groups and 70 members to 31 study groups on our Paradise Campus (with 11 more study groups at our five satellite campuses) and over 1,000 members. Besides the academic program, we foster friendships with luncheons and a variety of social activities. Volunteer opportunities on the UNLV campus are another facet of OLLI and bring satisfaction to our member participants as we aid our UNLV family. Both UNLV and the Osher Foundation offer support and guidance, as the program grows and changes. Join us and find the joys of learning in a friendly atmosphere on the UNLV Paradise Campus or at one of our other locations. I did, and each semester brings something new and wonderful! About OLLI at UNLV The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (OLLI at UNLV) is a membership directed, vibrant learning community of over 1,000 semi-retired or retired adults. Our members want to continue a lifetime of learning with programs rich in content, shared interests, and life experiences. OLLI at UNLV offers special events and other activities in addition to our regularly scheduled study group terms. These programs are purely for enjoyment. There are no tests, grades, or need for prior college experience, only the chance to join your peers in the joy of learning and its many benefits. Our coordinators (study group leaders) are qualified members of OLLI and others who enjoy sharing their knowledge. We are proud of our volunteer speakers, many of whom are experts, well-known in their fields. As we kick off the Spring 2011 semester, we are pleased to offer more than 40 interesting and stimulating study groups on a wide range of subjects. Less formal “Brown Bag Lunch” sessions, between the morning and afternoon study groups, will also return. Take up to eleven courses this semester for one low cost of $65.00.

Special Events for OLLI Members 1. Clinical Simulation Center - Thursday, February 25th from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM (no additional cost). We will be among the first to tour the state-of-the-art 31,000 square foot Simulation and Skills Lab at Shadow Lane. The “Sim Lab”, which is shared by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Nevada State College, and the University of Nevada Medical School, features high-fidelity, life-like adult and infant manikins which can be programmed with specific diseases and symptoms and respond to treatment in a realistic way. On our tour, we’ll see nursing students and medical students practice “hands-on” medical procedures in a safe learning environment. 2. Springs Preserve - Friday, March 25th from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Cost is $13 per person and includes guided tour and access to the Springs Preserve all day. Bring your cameras, light jackets, and comfortable walking shoes when we tour the “must see” Springs Preserve! Located only three miles from the Las Vegas Strip, the Springs Preserve offers a smorgasbord of unbelievable sights including: a realistic 5,000-gallon flash flood; nature hikes through luxurious gardens; inspirational landscapes; over 300 amazing exhibits; galleries of thought-provoking artwork; replicas of the arrival of the railroad to Las Vegas; ancient Pueblo settlement; the auction of Las Vegas; and MORE! Take a break from sightseeing to enjoy a snack at Wolfgang Puck’s Springs Cafe, or to visit the “green” Gift Shop. 3. Walking Box Ranch - Friday, April 8th from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Cost is $18 per person. Walking Box Ranch is located in Searchlight, Nevada. OLLI members will be transported back in time to 1931, as we walk where Clara Bow (Hollywood’s original “IT” girl of silent movie fame) and her husband Rex Bell (Western film star and later lieutenant governor of Nevada, from 1955-1962) walked and entertained friends, such as Errol Flynn, Carole Lombard, Clark Gable, and Lionel Barrymore, and where they proudly raised two sons (Son Rex Bell Jr. served as Clark County district attorney in the early 1980’s and early 1990’s). Take time to enjoy: the historic Spanish-style ranch house and other buildings; the birds; desert tortoises; and the acres of Joshua trees and other native plants. Please note there is some uneven ground, and there are no handicap accommodations. 4. “Love” show at the Mirage Theater. Don’t miss this popular show. Plans are underway for this upcoming event. Updates will be sent out in January and posted in the classrooms. 5. Lou Ruvo Brain Institute presents a 4-week course on Positive Aging is offered in partnership with the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Brain Institute, 888 W. Bonneville Ave., Las Vegas NV 89106. (No additional cost). Positive Aging: Promoting Brain Health - (March 21st through April 11th), from 1 PM to 2:30 PM. Will you live to be 100? Be of sound mind and body? The answer to these questions reflects a combination of factors – some over which we have no control, such as our DNA, and others where our choices can make a significant difference. Lifestyle options such as diet, exercise, lifelong learning and social engagement can have a direct and considerable impact on the health of our bodies and brains. In this four-part course, we will examine the latest research and current best practices with the potential to positively impact brain health. Course will be offered on four Mondays. The instructor is Susan Hirsch, Director of Social Services, Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health.

Great Decisions The Great Decisions study group returns for its 18th year at UNLV under the sponsorship of “The Foreign Policy Association”. Using a combination of readings, videos, and lectures, the group will examine and discuss important world topics, selected from the topics in the 2011 textbook, plus other member selections. Billy Wilder: His Life and Career (Part 2) Director, writer, producer, Billy Wilder is one of the most honored filmmakers in motion picture history. We will continue our study of this director’s life and films. This semester will include: Witness for the Prosecution, Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, and others. We will watch clips from other films with “the Wilder touch.” You are encouraged to take this course even if you missed the first semester. Health is Wealth: Better Living Through a Holistic Approach
Coordinators - Dr. Charles Vinnik practiced Plastic Surgery in Las Vegas for 33 years. He has been and remains active in many community cultural, charitable, political and UNLV activities including the athletic program. Mark Gilmore was raised in Colorado and graduated from Dartmouth College and Thunderbird School of Global Management. He served four years in the US Army in the Counterintelligence Corps, and spent 41 years in international banking, concentrating on Latin America.
Las Vegas Arts: Brown Bag Lunch Series Join Dave & Liz Dameron for lunch and explore the vibrant Las Vegas Theater scene “off the Strip.” The Brown Bag lunch series will focus on community and school theater (L.V. Winston Churchill Winston Churchill was arguably, the greatest leader of the 20th Century. Churchill is one of the most fascinating individuals you will “meet.” He is proof that a single individual can change the course of history. With the use of DVD’s, lectures and discussions, we will learn about all facets of his life. This course will run for 6 weeks. Portraits: Stories in Paint If you could conjure an image to represent yourself, what would it look like? For more than 3,000 years, people have employed artists to create portraits of themselves and their loved ones. What is the appeal? In this entertaining, image-rich presentation, we explore “face value” in portraits from ancient times to presentday masters. You will learn tools to reveal fascinating stories. We will hone our esthetic taste in a discussion of beauty and meaning. We will examine why some of the most beloved art in history centers on the human form. Begins: Monday, March 21st Last Class is Monday, April 4th (3 sessions) Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM PAR 400 Coordinator – Pamela Osborn taught widely at Community Education Departments in California and to businesses in Silicon Valley. A gallerist since 1996, she directed a prominent gallery in Santa Fe dedicated to portrait art. She enjoys sharing her love and enthusiasm for portrait art through public speaking.
Guitar Artistry: Country Blues to Big City Be-Bop
The class will take a look at a range of guitarists from early acoustic blues through modern classic jazz, and their articulate and passionate contributions to our musical culture. Early American musicians who were sharecroppers by day, expressed themselves and their lifestyles through music at night. These early Delta blues men’s influences are still heard in today’s culture. We will “meet” great jazz musicians of the world, and observe their unique styles and influences. Video and audio presentations will be made. Join us if you have a love of music, an open mind, a smile, and a toe that is willing to tap. Begins: Monday, January 24th Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM PAR 511 Coordinator - Niels Clyde has been a guitar lover since Elvis first hit the Ed Sullivan show. He has become interested in many different forms that this versatile instrument takes. He played guitar, mostly for his own amusement, for about 35 years. During his career, Niels was an educator in an industrial environment.

Formerly coordinated by Al Boccia, artist novice Elena Cieslak will continue Al’s love of art in the OLLI Program. Come and discover the hidden artist within yourself. Even if you can’t draw a straight line we want you to join us because that’s art. From pencils to water color to acrylics, you will be able to choose whatever media interests you. Come have fun and create art with us! Begins: Monday, January 24th Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM PAR 403 Coordinator - Elena Cieslak has been drawing and painting for most of her life. Although she has no formal training except high school art classes, Elena can draw, paint and sculpt amongst other media. Elena is also a retired Medical Assistant and Medical Assistant Instructor, as well as being a former Family Nutrition Advisor for Purdue University.
Invest Like Warren Buffett You should find out how to invest properly because the last person who had your best financial interest at heart was probably your mother. Learn how to properly manage stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. The earliest sound investment advice came from Aesop who said, “A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.” In more modern terms, Warren Buffett says, “A girl in your convertible is worth many telephone numbers.” Following this study group, you should be able to evaluate how many birds reside in the bush and how to get them. Begins: Monday, January 24th Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM PAR 401 Coordinator - Jack Dien is a retired vascular surgeon, Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at USC School of Medicine. He advised the managers of the largest physician group in California. He became aware of the wisdom of Ben Graham and Warren Buffett. He was one of a small group who met Mr. Buffett, who at intervals was kind enough to answer their questions.

Russian History: An Overview (Part 2)
“Soap Box” is a class for presentation and discussion of important matters affecting all of us. Some topics require extensive background information as outlined by the class leader, while other subjects stimulate lively questions, ideas, and comments by our class members. We have guests who speak with us about their specific areas of interest in the arts, medicine, economics, politics, transportation, education, water problems, immigration policy, local issues, and more.
Part Two of this course will pick up with Peter the Great. We will move through the 18th century (Catherine, Anna, Elizabeth, Catherine the Great), and into the 19th century which will focus on Russia’s intellectual flowering; freeing of the serfs, and the 19th century origins of Russia’s 20th century revolutions of both 1905 and 1917. Then, we will close out with an examination of “Soviet times” from 1917 to 1989.
Questions and comments from class members are at the heart of this popular OLLI Program. Members ask questions and make comments in an atmosphere of mutual respect and civility. We all learn from each other and understand that honest differences will always exist. You will enjoy participating in this OLLI “Forum.” Join in the conversation to hear a variety of views from interested and interesting people! Arrive early to get a seat. He received his degree from Cornell University in Labor Relations and worked for 35 years as a Director in Human Resources Administration.
Mystery Readings and Movies
John Wooding has been active in Soap Box for many years. He is a University of Chicago graduate and served in the US Air Force. He has interests in many issues facing our country.
In each class session, our members report on mystery readings and movies. We have intriguing class discussions about the stories (which this semester will be authored by the most famous mystery authors of the 20th century) and the writers. The last hour of each class, we enjoy seeing different movie mysteries, and reviewing and discussing them. We hope you’ll participate in this happy group, and join in the fun!

Buddhism: A Way of Life
Whether our choice is fiction, nonfiction, poetry or prose, we each bring our own unique style of writing. Join us in an open, creative, and stimulating atmosphere, whether you are a beginner or a seasoned writer. This group strives for active, meaningful interaction, and provides participants lots of encouragement, appreciation, and constructive evaluation. Writing exercises will be fun. Critiques are filled with lots of laughter as we applaud ourselves. Attendance at prior classes is not required, and new writers are encouraged to attend.
This semester we will explore Buddhism through a series of DVDs by Professor Mark Muesse of Rhodes College who received a Harvard Ph.D and the Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Teaching (Rhodes College’s highest honor for a member of its faculty). The course will include a comparison of Buddhism with other major world religions. We will also deepen our thinking by hearing many thought-provoking stories and extraordinary examples of how we can bring ourselves out of hardship and suffering. If desired by class members, we will continue to explore meditation.

Don is an eight year Excell/OLLI Member and served four years on the OLLI Board of Directors, including two years as president. Tom Lyon holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in Political Science. He worked for the government in Washington D.C. and as an owner of a bridge club for 35 years. He has been an Excell/OLLI Member since 1995. Ruth Theile earned a B.S. in Education from Chicago State University and a M.A. from the University of Chicago. She was a Physical Education teacher and was Chairman of Curriculum Development for the Chicago Board of Education.

Diabetes Update Diabetes has become one of the most expensive and debilitating diseases in the U.S., affecting 18 - 23 million people, while another 41 million people have pre-diabetes. This 5-week course will update you on new developments within the last two years. A David & Goliath Story: WWII Technology World War II led to an explosion of new technologies that would have profound effects in the postwar period. The atomic bomb is the most spectacular example of Allied technical superiority, but just as significantly, the Allies developed radar and other new ‘electronic beam warfare’ technologies at a rate that left the Axis in the dust. Winston Churchill called the race for electronic superiority the Wizard War. Although advanced Nazi aircraft, guided weapons, and long-range rockets are well known, in reality the Allies led the Germans in many fields, and not only had more resources to draw from but were much better organized to exploit their new inventions. This presentation provides a fascinating and formerly secret history of the Invisible Conflict. The Impressionist Painters: A New Way of Seeing Impressionist painting captured the new world of leisure and recreation, depicting city life, landscapes, and country scenes, in bold color and muted tones. The artists were driven by their zest for life (joie de vivre) despite their own financial hardships. Their paintings became the “snapshot” of the times and chronicled the social changes taking place. At first their efforts were not appreciated. Questioning Your Reality Four questions to consider: 1) Can you create the change in your life that you want? 2) If you looked at a situation differently, would the outcome be different? 3) If you could understand how powerful your thoughts are, would that change the way you view the world around you? 4) Are you living the life you dreamed? This course is based on scientific progress in demonstrating the power of thoughts, intentions, imagination, and emotions. New and creative conceptual models suggest why and how a person can become a better creator of their reality. The course will study values, beliefs and attitudes in terms of promoting or hindering an individual’s power to change. Members will be challenged to see themselves in new and intriguing ways. Class participation will be encouraged through group discussions, which will be non-judgmental, playful, honest and open to new ideas and concepts. Justice: What’s the Right Thing To Do?
History of Parapsychology
“Justice” is one of the most popular courses in Harvard’s history. It is now the first course Harvard has ever made available to everyone. As one student stated “I’ve never been in a class like this before” and neither will you. This course aims to help members become better critical thinkers about the moral decisions we all face in our everyday lives. Professor Sandel will charge us with difficult moral dilemmas and ask us our opinion about the “right thing to do.” He then asks us to examine our answers in the light of new scenarios. The result is often surprising, revealing that important moral questions are never black and white. This course also addresses the hot topics of our day - same sex marriage, affirmative action, patriotism, and rights. Professor Sandel shows us that we can revisit familiar controversies with a fresh perspective. Join us as we watch and discuss the entire 12-lecture series.
Many people have experienced some form of hunch or intuition and ignored the experience as imagination, afraid of being thought crazy, if they openly speak of these unusual experiences.

This class will go beyond psychology. We will study scientific investigators who refused to take the word of psychologists, and other scientists, that the field of parapsychology was nothing but nonsense. A group of them decided to investigate out of curiosity. They were amazed at what they found. This class is repeated by request, with the addition of a scientific explanation by Wayne Bosze. The subject is a new approach to an “old mythology” as dubbed by scientists of the past, and even today some scientists spurn the study of parapsychology as ridiculous. After a career in Materials Research & Development of thick film electronic components, Wayne spent a year teaching high school algebra. He holds two patents.

Discover the basic foundation of the Food Guide Pyramid and how to get the nutrients we need for everyday health and wellbeing. We will discuss the recommended number of servings and serving sizes, along with the vital nutrients contained in each food group. Learn the importance and meaning of label information. Review food safety along with the importance of breakfast and snacks. Enjoy lectures, discussions, and handouts. The “Beat Generation” (1950’s) This is a comprehensive look at the literature and culture of post-WWII America that gave rise to the “beat generation,” precursors of the turbulent sixties and the “hippies.” We will study Kerouac, Ginsberg, the Greenwich Village scene, Grove Press, and whatever else strikes our fancy along the way. Russian History: An Overview (Part 2) Part Two of this course will pick up with Peter the Great. We will move through the 18th century (Catherine, Anna, Elizabeth, Catherine the Great), and into the 19th century which will focus on Russia’s intellectual flowering; freeing of the serfs, and the 19th century origins of Russia’s 20th century revolutions of both 1905 and 1917.
