RADIO & TV VOICE-OVER WORKSHOP Educate, entertain, and promote as a voice-over professional. The market for voice-over talent has expanded to include online tutorials, corporate training tools, interactive telephone prompts, and mobile apps in addition to more traditional radio, television, and film work. You will explore tips and techniques for breathing life into a script, and then practice, practice, practice! STONE CARVING

Acrylic paints share some similarities with both watercolor and oil painting, yet they also offer their own beautiful and unique characteristics. Course will cover brush and non-brush work, color mixing, transparent and opaque application, textural and collage options, composition, creative aids, simple special effects, and critiques. Ask for a supply list when registering.

Continue your experimentation with watercolor as you gain experience with shadows and lighting, water, reflective and transparent surfaces, and different types of perspective. You will explore opaque watercolors and mixed media options. Build on the skills you learned in the Watercolor Basics course or expand on your prior experience in art. Work with the natural shape of the stone as you learn the use of carving tools, practice finishing techniques, and experiment with 3D design. Use of studio tools is included. Bring protective eyeglasses or safety goggles to the first class. Expect to pay approximately $70–$100 for a stone. No previous art background is required.

Fall 2012 Conservation Series Preserve your memories, personal collections, and treasures using professional techniques developed for museums, archives, and libraries. Lectures on archival preservation techniques are augmented by hands-on laboratory work. Students are encouraged to bring personal items to class to work with. Antarctic Trip – Dec. 2013/Jan. 2014 A visit to Antarctica is a visit to the very ends of the earth. This land of glittering ice, majestic peaks, and dazzling beauty is a haven for migratory birds, whales, seals, and other marine mammals who come each summer to feast in is food-rich coastal waters. We will be visiting during the Antarctic summer (our winter) when temperatures are mild, generally hovering just above freezing.

Join Dr. Margaret N. (Peg) Rees and artist Sharon K. Schafer as we travel to Quito, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. You will spend two evenings in Quito, the first city to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Explore Quito’s history, art, and architecture with an included cultural tour of the city. After Quito, we will depart on an incredible ten-day Galapagos experience onboard our privately chartered 16-person catamaran. The catamaran’s small size will allow you a very intimate, comfortable, and personal exploration of the islands. The Galapagos Islands are a small, rocky archipelago 500 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Isolated from the mainland for millions of years, the islands are home to an abundance of unique wildlife. pristine islands and walk among colonies of animals and birds unfazed by your presence. Nevada artist and naturalist Sharon K. Schafer has worked extensively in the Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic Islands as an artist-in-residence, photographer, and videographer. Embrace the rhythms of Brazil as a member of the Mocidade Rebelde percussion ensemble. The instructor will teach by demonstrating techniques, rhythms, and stylistic details rather than giving written music. This is how percussionists in the “batteria escolas” (drumming schools) are traditionally taught in Brazil. Absolute beginners through professional drummers and percussionists are welcome. All instruments are provided.

This is a university-level ensemble and is also offered as a credit course in the university catalog (MUSE 105, 405, 505). Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory. Formed in January 1987, the UNLV Community Concert Band is among the oldest community instrumental groups in the Las Vegas area. The 70-plus members range in age from high school to seniors. The band plays a wide variety of music including marches, show and film scores, and classic and contemporary wind arrangements. Concerts are scheduled at on-campus and off-campus venues each semester.

The Las Vegas Flute Ensemble is open to flutists of any age and ability, from high school and college players to professionals. The group plays music by some of the world’s most renowned composers. There is no formal audition for this group, but you should have at least one year of high school playing experience. Concerts will be given on and off campus each semester.

Support the Runnin’ Rebel basketball team as a member of the University Basketball Pep Band. Attendance is mandatory at scheduled pre-season rehearsals, regular rehearsals, special performances on and off campus, and at UNLV home basketball games. The Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society The Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society invites singers from around the valley to join in celebrating its very special 50th Anniversary season. The Society’s 75-voice Musical Arts Chorus and Orchestra performs choral-orchestra masterworks throughout the year. The 2012-2013 Musical Arts Society season includes performances of the following masterworks: “Judas

Maccabaeus” by G. F. Handel; the “Lord Nelson Mass” by Joseph Haydn; “African Sanctus” by David Fanshawe; and “Feel the Spirit” by John Rutter. This year’s annual pops concert will feature music by Berlin, Porter, Rodgers, and others. Pet Training DOG OBEDIENCE: BASIC Eliminate problem behaviors and establish a lasting bond with your dog through proper control on and off a leash. Your canine companion will learn heel, automatic sit, sitstay, down, down-stay, come, no, drop it, leave it, and okay. You will learn how to deter jumping, barking, house soiling, and more. THE DYNAMIC DIGITAL PORTRAIT

Canine Good Citizen (CGC) is a certification program testing dogs in everyday situations in a relaxed atmosphere. The purpose is to ensure your favorite companion can be a respected member of the community who acts mannerly at home and in public places. Each week your dog will complete specific behavior assessments and tasks. The CGC test will be held on Nov. 25, 2012.

A great deal of thought should go into a portrait before you click the shutter. Gain experience setting up, posing, and lighting portraits. Your instructor will also demonstrate digital techniques in retouching and image enhancements. Students must bring a digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) or a 35mm SLR camera and be comfortable with manually setting their camera’s F-stops and shutter speeds.

Refunds of registration fees paid by check will require a minimum of six weeks to be processed, to allow sufficient time for the check issued by the student to clear, prior to a refund check being issued. • Unless a separate policy is stated for a specific class or classes, the following applies to all cancellations and refunds: Prior to the first day of class 100 percent of the fee paid will be refunded minus a $10 administrative fee. If class has begun or concluded, refunds are decided on a case-by-case basis. All refunds must be requested within 14 days of the last class. All of the provisions of the Class Cancellation and Refund Policy are in accordance with relevant Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) rules and regulations adopted and approved by the NSHE Board of Regents.

• The Division of Educational Outreach cooperates with the Clark County District Attorney’s office to prevent bad check losses. A $25 service fee will be assessed for any check returned from the bank for any reason. Post-dated or two party checks will not be accepted. Any returned check shall be made good within ten days after notification to the student, or the student will not be permitted to attend any classes.

Payment of Fees • Payment must be received at the time of registration. Students are responsible for the payment of all fees associated with each course in which they enroll within the time period specified by UNLV. • Students who fail to pay fees when due, will be required to pay late fees and any additional penalties established by UNLV. Failure to pay applicable fees when due will result in referral to an outside collection agency.

Parking Permit Information Parking permits are required on both the UNLV main campus and the Paradise campus. They are required 7am-7pm, Monday through Thursday and 7am-1pm on Fridays. Parking permits are available at the DEO Information Desk and at the UNLV Parking and Transportation Services Office 702-895-1300.

Professional Credit Upon registering for a professional course (real estate or management) for the purpose of obtaining professional credit hours, please include your Nevada license number. Continuing Education Units Some of the courses in this catalog qualify for CEUs (Continuing Education Units). CEUs are a way of measuring and officially recognizing the time and effort you have put into your education for your job or profession. One CEU is equal to 10 hours of instruction. CEUs do not constitute academic credit. They are maintained by the Division of Educational Outreach and provide you with a transcript upon request. So, what do you do with a CEU? As you update your credentials, are in line for a transfer, promotion or evaluation of your current position, or want to make a vocational change or explore a new career, the CEUs demonstrate the time, energy and interest you have shown in broadening your horizons. University of Nevada, Las Vegas Alumni UNLV alumni with a baccalaureate or advanced degree are entitled to a 15 percent discount on ONE select class per semester as deemed by the DEO office. This discount may only be used by alumni (not their spouses or children). Class Location Most courses are held on the UNLV Paradise campus, but some are held at other locations throughout the county and are identified in the course description. Office Hours The Division of Educational Outreach Information Desk is open Monday through Thursday, 8am-9pm, Friday 8am-5pm, and Saturday 8am-5pm except for university holidays. After 5pm, students may park in faculty/staff spaces in all lots with parking permits except those located in lots M (North of the Dining

Commons and the Student Health Center), I (North of the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies), and G (between Frank and Estella Beam Hall and Tonopah Hall). When parking in metered spaces, you must pay the meter prior to 7pm. Alcohol on Campus Alcohol is not permitted on campus unless specifically for DEO course. Students must be able to prove they are 21 years of age prior to any class involving alcohol.
