WELCOME TO THE SPRING 2012 CONTINUING EDUCATION CATALOG FOR PERSONAL ENRICHMENT “The real problem of leisure time is how to keep others from using yours.” ~Arthur Lacey We know you don’t have a lot of leisure time, and that you value what you do have more now than ever before. What they’re saying about Alice Whitfield: I took Alice’s introductory course through UNLV in Nov. of 2009 and continued for several months in her master class. She gives a first rate introduction to the field of voice overs. As a determined student I welcomed the fact that her standards were high and that I would soon have a good foundation for deciding whether or not to pursue voice overs further. Even if you take her course simply from curiosity, be prepared for a challenge, for a crash education and if the stars and hard work align, the launch of a satisfying new career. Alex MacDonald

Acting & Film RADIO & TV VOICE-OVER WORKSHOP If radio and TV commercial voice-overs were that easy, more people would be doing them. If you are serious about finding out if you have what it takes to make it in this lucrative and highly competitive industry, this course is for you. Contrary to what you might think, voice-over has very little to do with your voice! It’s being able to read a script and make it sound like you’re not reading. This fourweek course is not for the faint of heart. It is conducted and taught exactly the way the business runs in the real world. FYI: There is a huge difference between local and national level of voice-over performers. So, to give yourself the best opportunity of competing in any of the voice-over markets (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and all regions in between), it is important to learn the business from someone who is in it on a national level. Your instructor is one of the most sought-after voice-over coaches for many top New York and Hollywood celebrities. She frequently commutes between Las Vegas and Los Angeles to coach stars such as King of Queens co-star Leah Remini, among many others. Her book, Take It From The Top!, is suggested reading for this course.

HOW TO MAKE A (CHEAP) FEATURE FILM IN TWO WEEKENDS Have you dreamed of making a low-budget movie, but assumed you didn’t have enough time, money, or know how? This course will show you how to make an ultra-ULTRA low budget independent movie you can film in four days. Former Hollywood screenwriter of Quigley Down Under and L.A Law, Emmy-winner John Hill will show you some tricks of the trade in how to plan, write, and film a movie in two weekends, for close to no money. The instructor brought his years of screenwriting and production experience to his recent ultra-low-budget movie, The Great White Loan Shark, an 82-minute feature he wrote, directed, and filmed in ONE day. He’ll show it in class and share what he learned in making it. He can show you how to make a movie! THE EXPRESSIVE ACTOR, INTEGRATED VOICE MOVEMENT & ACTOR TRAINING Featuring the Lugering Method: the Lugering Method explores the integrated manner in which mental and emotional content are expressed through the body and voice. The goal is an expressive actor capable of a vivid, powerful and artful expression of thought and feeling that is spectacularly human and rarely demonstrated in daily living. Expression is viewed as a highly specialized type of physical action in which energy, orientation, size, progression, flow, direction, speed, weight, control and focus are structured and shaped to reveal the content of our thoughts and feelings. The result is a synthesis of the mind and the body in the sensuous expression of thought and feeling. Whether the actor is working on expressing love or loss, resonance or range, alignment or flexibility, the Principles of Expression have a similar and consistent application. These principles transcend any specific acting style, focusing on universal aspects of human expression present in all drama form Shakespeare to Simon, Wycherley to Wasserstein, Moliere to Mamet. For more information visit the website at www. expressiveactor.org. STONE CARVING Do you feel connected to the mountains that surround us and feel adventurous? You will work with the natural shape of the stone as you learn the use of carving tools and finishing techniques along with 3D design. No previous art background is required. Use of studio tools is included. You will need to bring protective eyeglasses or safety goggles to the first class. Expect to pay approximately $70–$100 for the stone you choose to work with. Your instructor has been sculpting for 40 years and teaching for 30. She has exhibited her work throughout the United States, including one woman and group shows. She is now in Las Vegas, working out of her studio in the Downtown Arts District. C121AR1114 Sharon Gainsburg, sculpture artist Sat. 9:30am-12:30pm, Jan. 28-Mar. 31 Sharon Gainsburg Studio, 1039 S. What they’re saying about Sharon Gainsberg: I heard about the Stone Carving course from the UNLV Continuing Education catalog. I am a retired civil engineer and had previously worked with rock tunnels in Alaska. Also, I made a study of the strength of Topopah Tuff Rock in Western Nevada for my 2009 Ph.D. dissertation at the Howard Hughes College of Engineering at UNLV. Having worked with rocks for many years, I thought it would be great to learn how to carve stone sculptures, and the UNLV Continuing Education course provided the opportunity. I learned the techniques of stone sculpturing in the course that was held at the Sharon Gainsburg Studio. The primary tool that I used was a toothed chisel, which was said to be the favorite tool of Michelangelo, who carved the marble stature of David in Italy, 1501-1504 AD. I also learned how to use rasps, saws and sanding blocks. Thank you Gainsburg Studio and the UNLV Continuing Education program for the great course in Stone Sculpturing. Jim Nott, Ph.D.

BASIC WOODWORKING

INTERMEDIATE WOODWORKING

NEW - CABINETRY FOR THE HOME

Even if you’ve never touched a hammer before, learn how to work with wood safely, and with artistic vision. You will learn how to setup, use and maintain all of the major woodworking tools including the tablesaw, jointer, planer, drill press, bandsaw, and stationary belt sander. Classes will meet in a well-equipped woodshop, featuring a SawStop tablesaw, two jointers, 24” planer, wide board sander and much more! During the course of the six classes, you will complete three projects designed to teach practical use of the tools. Upon completion, you will feel confident enough to not only use all of these tools, but to make wise purchases of your own tools. Master woodworker, Jamie Yocono, has a BS in Furniture Design and has developed and taught woodworking and furniture making courses since 1995. She is the owner and operator of Wood It Is!, a woodworking studio and school that she opened in 2006.

Becoming a good woodworker isn’t about taking a course and learning to assemble things. It is about developing techniques to help you build the pieces you design. This course will allow you to add to your woodworking bag of tricks - teaching you some new joinery and skills that will dress up your future projects. These include cutting compound miter joints (and making a very special project with what you learn!), machining finger joints, mortise and tenon joinery, cutting tapers, working with plastic laminate and much more. We’ll complete a few simple projects designed to help you practice your newly learned skills. This is an excellent follow-up course to Basic Woodworking and very highly recommended. Prerequisite: Basic Woodworking.

If you want to remodel or add on to your existing kitchen or bathroom cabinets, this class is for you! Learn the correct way to make built-in kitchen and bath cabinets. Drawer construction, door making and countertop fabrication will also be covered. You will complete a small cabinet in this class, with either doors or drawers, time permitting. Basic Woodworking is a prerequisite to this class.

Jamie Yocono, Wood It Is! Session: I C121AR1190A Tue. 6-9pm, Jan. 31-Mar. 6

C121AR1192 Jamie Yocono, Wood It Is! Mon. 6-9pm, Jan. 30-Mar. 5 Wood It Is! 2267 Gowan, Suite 106/107 NLV, NV 89032 (631-1870) $315 Includes $65 materials fee (6 Sessions)

Session: II C121AR1190B Thu. 6-9pm, Apr. 26-May 31 Wood It Is! 2267 Gowan, Suite 106/107 NLV, NV 89032 (631-1870) $325 Includes $75 materials fee (6 sessions)

What they’re saying about Jamie Yocono: My wife and I have been taking UNLV continuing education courses since 1999, mostly geology related field trips. We are both 58, and while she has many hobbies and interests that serve her in retirement, I never cultivated any physical hobbies. That is until I signed up for a UNLV course in Basic Woodworking. This was stepping out of the box for me, but professional woodworker and instructor Jamie Yocono is a terrific teacher. I was making beautiful wood products within weeks. Jamie keeps her classes small, and has a keen eye for her students and the attention each person might need. You not only learn the proper use of the tools, but how to construct a piece that utilizes the wood to its greatest potential. I can’t say enough about Jamie and her courses. She opened up a whole new world to me.

LAS VEGAS FLUTE ENSEMBLE

MOCIDADE REBELDE (UNLV BRAZILIAN ENSEMBLE) Mocidade Rebelde is a drumming ensemble that focuses specifically on the percussion music of Brazil. The ensemble is taught in a “by rote” style, which means that the instructor will demonstrate techniques, rhythms and stylistic details to the student rather than giving written music to the student to learn. This is how percussionists in the “batteria escolas” (drumming schools) have traditionally been taught in Brazil. Absolute beginners through professional drummers and percussionists are welcome. This is a fun and exciting ensemble to work with, energetically stimulating and theraputic for those who would like to release some stress. All we ask is that you bring a good attitude and enthusiasm to the group. All instruments are provided. Your instructor is Kurt Rasmussen, a respected percussionist for many world and Latin music artists, percussionist for the Cirque Du Soleil show “O” and member of the Vai Vai escola in Brazil. This is a nuts and bolts workshop on how to actually write the screenplay. Learn how to discover and dramatize the cinematic moments and emotional beats in your screenplay that make a difference. Understand how to write for your true audience-the reader. Get answers to questions: What are the secrets of writing crisp movie dialogue, compelling action, and great scenes? What’s the real difference between show and tell, and how do you apply the “less is more” principle to your writing? What is the single most common formatting error screenwriters make that hurts their chances with readers? As a bonus, get specific tips on how to create a winning pitch for today’s marketplace. David Trottier has sold ten screenplays and helped dozens of writers break in to the movie business. He is the author of The Screenwriter’s Bible (Now in its fifth edition) and writes a column for Script Magazine. NEW - FROM CONSPIRACY THEORY TO THRILLER

HOW TO PLOT (NOVELS, PLAYS OR SCRIPTS)

Have you wanted to write a conspiracy-rich thriller such as Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code or Umberto Eco’s Foucault’s Pendulum? Join us in this new class to learn a relatively simple, but effective process for generating plot synopses for novel-length thrillers by analyzing conspiracy theories for elements that will inspire your own fictional characters, conflicts, setting and themes. Develop your own, original conspiracy theories as a basis for a thriller, using the same strategies that actual conspiracy theorists often employ. Learn to plot your own thriller and create a platform for sequels, based upon the original conspiracy theory that you have developed. Homework will be encouraged to get the full benefit from this class.

Do you lack confidence when it comes to plotting your stories? As a plotter, are you a plodder? Learn to use your instincts to create complex, well-structured plots from a one-sentence story idea! Whether you’re trying to write a novel, play, short story or screenplay, you need scene ideas, difficult problems for your hero or heroine, rising tension, surprises and a big finish. This class will cover how to do it and provide insight into various story-telling forms. Your Emmy-winning instructor has been a professional writer for 25 years. His writing credits include Quigley Down Under, Quantum Leap, L.A. Law, and Griffin and Phoenix.

CULTIVATING WELLNESS THROUGH GARDENING “I will never smell a lilac without remembering walking to my childhood home’s back door underneath a trellis that was weighed down with lilac blooms cascading in midair, swinging like aromatic bells from their slender stems. The fragrance of lilac connects me to the essence of home. Vertical connections thread the past with the present and can penetrate the moment.” (Wydra, 1997, p.7) Horticultural therapy is a creative approach to helping people feel better by improving their quality of life. Many have born witness to the pleasurable benefits of convening with nature by means of the garden. A garden brings the colors, scents and sounds of nature to our doorstep in the most accessible way.

Cannon Survey Center Resources Cannon Survey Center operates a computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) facility. This system enables precise control over the order of questions and the range of legitimate responses so that invalid or inappropriate responses are avoided. Information is also automatically entered into data files while interviews are being conducted. CSC also maintains a system that creates paper surveys in which information can then be scanned into the computer, eliminating manual data entry. In addition to optical mark recognition (e.g., Scantron forms), this system also provides hand print (ICR), machine print (OCR), and barcode recognition. The CATI system and the scanner system enable CSC to design and execute surveys in a timely manner, save your organization money, and improve data accuracy. Class Cancellation and Refund Policy • The Division of Educational Outreach reserves the right to cancel any class or make any other changes it deems necessary in order to provide students with the best educational experience possible. • Course fees will be refunded in full if it becomes necessary to cancel a course, however, under no circumstances will the amount refunded exceed the amount of the registration fee. Educational Outreach will not reimburse students for the cost of travel or lodging in the unlikely event that a class is cancelled. Therefore, it is recommended that students traveling to attend classes make travel reservations that are able to be changed, should it become necessary to do so. • Educational Outreach will make all reasonable attempts to notify students of class cancellations or changes, using e-mail, phone, and fax contact information provided by the student at the time of registration. It is recommended you call 895-3394 a day prior to your class to confirm that the class will meet as scheduled. • We recognize you may occasionally need to cancel a registration. If you wish to receive a refund, we must receive a written statement (e-mail, fax, or postal mail) listing the course name and number, and giving the reason for cancellation. The direct link for the cancellation page is: http://continuingeducation.unlv.edu/ registration/refund/ or it may be faxed to 895-4195. Postal mail refund requests should be sent to Educational Outreach, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway, Box 451019, Las Vegas, NV 89154-1019. • Refunds of registration fees paid by credit card will be processed as a credit to the credit card account within seven business days of the cancellation notification. Refunds of registration fees paid by check will require a minimum of six weeks to be processed, to allow sufficient time for the check issued by the student to clear, prior to a refund check being issued. • Unless a separate policy is stated for a specific class or classes, the following applies to all cancellations and refunds: Prior to the first day of class 100 percent of the fee paid will be refunded minus a $10 administrative fee. If class has begun or concluded, refunds are decided on a case-by-case basis by calling 895-3394. All refunds must be done within 14 days of the last class. All of the provisions of the Class Cancellation and Refund Policy are in accordance with relevant Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) rules and regulations adopted and approved by the NSHE Board of Regents. Payment of Fees • Payment must be received at the time of registration. Students are responsible for the payment of all fees associated with each course in which they enroll within the time period specified by UNLV. • Students who fail to pay fees when due, will be required to pay late fees, and any additional penalties established by UNLV.

Failure to pay applicable fees when due will result in referral to an outside collection agency. • The Division of Educational Outreach cooperates with the Clark County District Attorney’s office to prevent bad check losses. A $25 service fee will be assessed for any check that is returned from the bank for any reason. Post-dated or two party checks will not be accepted. Any returned check shall be made good within ten days after notification to the student, or the student will not be permitted to attend any classes. Professional Credit Upon registering for a professional course (real estate or management) for the purpose of obtaining professional credit hours, please include your Nevada license number. Continuing Education Units Some of the courses in this catalog qualify for CEUs (Continuing Education Units). CEUs are a way of measuring and officially recognizing the time and effort you have put into your education for your job or profession. One CEU is equal to 10 hours of instruction. CEUs do not constitute academic credit. They are maintained by the Division of Educational Outreach and provide you with a transcript upon request. So, what do you do with a CEU? As you update your credentials, are in line for a transfer, promotion or evaluation of your current position, or want to make a vocational change or explore a new career, the CEUs demonstrate the time, energy and interest you have shown in broadening your horizons.
