Acting, Photo & Film RADIO & TV VOICE-OVER WORKSHOP If radio and TV commercial voice-overs were that easy, more people would be doing them. If you are serious about finding out if you have what it takes to make it in this lucrative and highly competitive industry, this course is for you. Contrary to what you might think, voice-over has very little to do with your voice! It’s being able to read a script and make it sound like you’re not reading. This four-week course is not for the faint of heart. It is conducted and taught exactly the way the business runs in the real world. FYI: There is a huge difference between local and nationals level of voice-over performers. So, to give yourself the best opportunity of competing in any of the voice-over markets (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and all regions in between), it is important to learn the business from someone who is in it on a national level. THE DYNAMIC DIGITAL PORTRAIT It’s not the taking; it is the creating that makes a dynamic portrait. Bring your lunch and camera and join us for this hands-on one-day workshop. A clam-shell box is an intricate custom made presentation box and storage enclosure for a book of value and importance. Invented and used by the Library of Congress, they are perfect for a family bible or other treasured book. In this hands-on class, you will create your own special custom-made clam-shell presentation box. Students are encouraged to bring a book from home to work with. All supplies will be provided. Class size is limited. (This class was formerly titled, Protective Enclosures.)

So, you took a workshop in the Book and Conservation workshop series and didn’t quite finish that project. Maybe you need some extra help? This is a free bonus studio for students who have taken a workshop in this series (except paper marbling). You will benefit from additional laboratory time and will receive additional instruction and advice for individual projects. Class discussions will center on creating an individual portfolio for professional presentation. Watercolor’s luminous and versatile quality is awesome and you can get a handle on it. Don’t let its tough reputation throw you. NEW STONE CARVING Do you have a sense of adventure and want to discover a new way to express yourself? Explore the direct carving method of working with stone, which means that you do not work from models or sketches. You will work with the natural shape of the stone as you learn the use of carving tools and finishing techniques along with 3D design. No previous art background is required. BASIC OILS Even though modern technology has made this classic medium wonderfully accessible - with pre-mixed mediums, pre-stretched and pre-primed canvas and panels, and endless selections of colors - there is no substitute for being thoroughly versed in the basic skills. Your instructor will discuss the essential why and wherefores including brushes, canvases, stretching techniques, palettes, colors, mediums, oils, glazes and varnishes, easels, lighting and where to start looking for inspiration and source materials. You will explore color mixing, both from absolute primaries and from the standard commercially available colors, and basic editing and composition. NEW INTERMEDIATE WOODWORKING Becoming a good woodworker isn’t about taking a course and learning to assemble things. It is about developing techniques to help you build the pieces you design. This course will allow you to add to your woodworking bag of tricks - teaching you some new joinery and skills that will dress up your future projects. Dance BELLY DANCE WITH ASHTALEA Whether you’re new to belly dancing or want to build on and refine your existing skills, we have a class for you. Join us and explore Lebanese and Egyptian Style Middle Eastern Dance, cabaret style. Wear comfortable exercise clothing to class. A list of necessary props will be provided on the first day of class. NEW BIRDING AND NATURAL HISTORY

ALONG THE UPPER MUDDY RIVER VALLEY

The upper Moapa River Valley is a little-visited but ecologically important area of Southern Nevada. Conservation interest in this area has been highlighted by the recent establishment of the Warm Springs Natural Area adjacent to the Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, was established in 1979 as the first National Wildlife Refuge to secure habitat for an endangered fish, the Moapa dace. This small fish is only found in the headwaters of the Muddy River. The Warm Springs Natural Area, owned by the Southern Nevada Water Authority, is home to a wide variety of fish, birds and other species. The 1,218-acre Natural Area provides a habitat for birds such as the southwestern willow flycatcher, yellowbilled cuckoo and vermillion flycatcher. Led by birding expert Scott Page and assisted by SNWA biologist David Syzdek, we will explore, studying the springs, pools, and streams on the refuge, and traversing sections of the natural area looking for migratory and breeding birds. Gain a better understanding of the relationships among land use, hydrology and conservation biology in this interesting area.

WILD HORSES & THE SPRING MOUNTAINS Horses roaming free living on the land represent freedom, graceful movement and the untamed wild. Film created a mythic relationship between Native Americans and the horse. The reality is that there were no horses, as we know them today, before the first Europeans started exploring the Americas 500 years ago. We will talk about the original horses in the Nevada landscape 20,000 years ago, the modern feral horses here now and the famous Mustangs in Northern Nevada. We will talk about the beauty of seeing horses in our environment and the effect they have on our deserts. We will discuss the herd living in Cold Creek and the area around Lee Canyon, including the beauty, the impacts and the sustainability of horses in our unique landscape here in Southern Nevada. MONUMENT VALLEY TRIBAL PARK

Monument Valley Tribal Park preserves one of the most stunning landscapes on earth, a large collection of striking spires, mesas and sandstone buttes with towering formations ranging in height from 400 to 1,000 feet. The park lies entirely within the Navajo Indian Reservation. While the view from the road is spectacular, we will explore Monument Valley on an all-day Navajo-guided jeep tour to view natural landmarks and sites that most visitors don’t see. Join UNLV Continuing Education on this four-day adventure. We will spend two nights at Goulding’s Lodge within the park. Goulding’s Lodge offers private balconies, views of Monument Valley, a museum on site and many

other amenities. On our third day, we will leave Monument Valley and the Navajo Indian Reservation and enter Hopi land. We will visit the Hopi Cultural Center at Second Mesa, AZ with time to explore and enjoy a traditional Hopi lunch. You will spend your third evening at La Posada in Winslow, AZ. The High Desert Horns was formed in the summer of 1997 to provide an outlet for French horn players in the greater Las Vegas area who wished to play in an ensemble environment. This ensemble consists of eight to twenty horn players who meet year round, to play quartets, octets and arrangements for twelve to sixteen horns by some of the world’s most renowned composers. Reading Skills 2011 Summer Reading Skills Programs for Children and Adults Turn your poor reader into a good reader or your good reader into a great reader. We are offering eight different reading skills and speed-reading programs this summer. Instructors are drawn from the faculty of the Institute of Reading Development. Parent and student evaluations indicate that these programs are remarkably successful in turning poor readers into good readers and good readers into great readers. Cannon Survey Center Resources Cannon Survey Center operates a computerassisted telephone interviewing (CATI) facility. This system enables precise control over the order of questions and the range of legitimate responses so that invalid or inappropriate responses are avoided. Information is also automatically entered into data files while interviews are being conducted. CSC also maintains a system that creates paper surveys in which information can then be scanned into the computer, eliminating manual data entry. In addition to optical mark recognition (e.g., Scantron forms), this system also provides hand print (ICR), machine print (OCR), and barcode recognition. The CATI system and the scanner system enable CSC to design and execute surveys in a timely manner, save your organization money, and improve data accuracy.

• The Division of Educational Outreach reserves the right to cancel any class or make any other changes it deems necessary in order to provide students with the best educational experience possible. • Course fees will be refunded in full if it becomes necessary to cancel a course, however, under no circumstances will the amount refunded exceed the amount of the registration fee. Refunds of registration fees paid by check will require a minimum of six weeks to be processed, to allow sufficient time for the check issued by the student to clear, prior to a refund check being issued. • Unless a separate policy is stated for a specific class or classes, the following applies to all cancellations and refunds: Prior to the first day of class 100 percent of the fee paid will be refunded minus a $10 administrative fee. If class has begun or concluded, refunds are decided on a case-by-case basis by calling 895-3394. All refunds must be done within 14 days of the last class. All of the provisions of the Class Cancellation and Refund Policy are in accordance with relevant Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) rules and regulations adopted and approved by the NSHE Board of Regents. Payment of Fees • Payment must be received at the time of registration. Students are responsible for the payment of all fees associated with each course in which they enroll within the time period specified by UNLV. • Students who fail to pay fees when due, will be required to pay late fees, and any additional penalties established by UNLV.

Failure to pay applicable fees when due will result in referral to an outside collection agency. • The Division of Educational Outreach cooperates with the Clark County District Attorney’s office to prevent bad check losses. A $25 service fee will be assessed for any check that is returned from the bank for any reason. Post-dated or two party checks will not be accepted. Any returned check shall be made good within ten days after notification to the student, or the student will not be permitted to attend any classes. Professional Credit Upon registering for a professional course (real estate or management) for the purpose of obtaining professional credit hours, please include your Nevada license number. Continuing Education Units Some of the courses in this catalog qualify for CEUs (Continuing Education Units). CEUs are a way of measuring and officially recognizing the time and effort you have put into your education for your job or profession. One CEU is equal to 10 hours of instruction. CEUs do not constitute academic credit. They are maintained by The Office of the Registrar and provide you with a transcript upon request. So, what do you do with a CEU? As you update your credentials, are in line for a transfer, promotion or evaluation of your current position, or want to make a vocational change or explore a new career, the CEUs demonstrate the time, energy and interest you have shown in broadening your horizons. University of Nevada, Las Vegas Alumni UNLV alumni with a baccalaureate or advanced degree are entitled to a 15 percent discount on ONE select class per semester as deemed by the Division of Educational Outreach office. This discount may only be used by alumni (not their spouses or children). Class Location Most courses are held on the UNLV Paradise Campus, but some are held at other locations throughout the county and are identified in the course description. After 5 pm, students may park in faculty/staff spaces in all lots with parking permits except those located in lots M (north of the Dining Commons and the Student Health Center), I (north of the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies), and G (between Frank and Estella Beam Hall and Tonopah Hall). When parking in metered spaces, you must pay the meter prior to 7 pm. Alcohol on Campus Alcohol is not permitted on campus unless specifically for an Educational Outreach course. Students must be able to prove that they are 21 years of age prior to any class that involves alcohol.
