Acting & Film RADIO & TV VOICE-OVER WORKSHOP If radio and TV commercial voice-overs were that easy, more people would be doing them. If you are serious about finding out if you have what it takes to make it in this lucrative and highly competitive industry, this course is for you. Contrary to what you might think, voice-over has very little to do with your voice! It’s being able to read a script and make it sound like you’re not reading. This fourweek course is not for the faint of heart. It is conducted and taught exactly the way the business runs in the real world. FYI: There is a huge difference between local and national level of voice-over performers. So, to give yourself the best opportunity of competing in any of the voice-over markets (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and all regions in between), it is important to learn the business from someone who is in it on a national level. Your instructor is one of the most sought-after voice-over coaches for many top New York and Hollywood celebrities. She frequently commutes between Las Vegas and Los Angeles to coach stars such as King of Queens co-star Leah Remini, among many others. Her book, Take It From The Top!, is suggested reading for this course. Alice Whitfield

“I’d always wanted to try voice-overs and was pleasantly surprised to find the workshop offered through UNLV Continuing Education. I first took the Radio & TV voice-over class in spring of 2010. After the first of my four sessions I was blown away! I had no idea I would be learning from someone with the breadth and depth of experience that the instructor, Alice Whitfield, has to offer.” “I completed my demo reel in July 2010 and began submitting auditions for voice-overs. I now work on-line and submit auditions for TV, radio, internet, and telephone voice-overs including smart phone apps. It’s a highly competitive field but I’m certain I can hold my own thanks to what I’ve learned in Alice Whitfield’s Radio & TV voice-over class.” “Because of her mentoring, I can proudly call myself a working voice-over actor.” Sunni Westbook

What they’re saying about Alice Whitfield:

THE EXPRESSIVE ACTOR, INTEGRATED VOICE MOVEMENT & ACTOR TRAINING Featuring the Lugering Method, which explores the integrated manner in which mental and emotional content are expressed through the body and voice. The goal is an expressive actor capable of a vivid, powerful and artful expression of thought and feeling that is spectacularly human and rarely demonstrated in daily living. Expression is viewed as a highly specialized type of physical action in which energy, orientation, size, progression, flow, direction, speed, weight, control and focus are structured and shaped to reveal the content of our thoughts and feelings. The result is a synthesis of the mind and the body in the sensuous expression of thought and feeling. Whether the actor is working on expressing love or loss, resonance or range, alignment or flexibility, the Principles of Expression have a similar and consistent application. These principles transcend any specific acting style, focusing on universal aspects of human expression present in all drama forms Shakespeare to Simon, Wycherley to Wasserstein, Moliere to Mamet. NEW-DISNEYLAND: A VISIT TO THE MAGIC KINGDOM “Here you leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy…” Opened in 1955, Walt Disney’s original theme park changed what an amusement park could be. Together with his talented “imagineers,” Disney developed the concept of “themed” areas - an idea that has been used in modern Las Vegas casinos and shopping malls around the world. The story of Walt Disney’s struggle to create a “different kind of park” is a ride almost as exciting as the place itself. Join Disney enthusiasts, Sean and Rebecca Jones, as we travel to Walt Disney’s theme park. Along the way they will share Disneyland history, trivia and stories. You’ll stay overnight at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel, a 15-story theme hotel overlooking the Paradise Pier District in Disney’s California Adventure Park. Children eight and over are welcome. Your trip includes transportation, overnight accommodations at Disney’s Paradise Pier (Maximum five guests to a room), and a two-day park hopper ticket.

You will cover two miles or more. Your instructor, Jeanne Tinsman, began birding before

she could remember, listening to robins sing as she was put to bed as a little girl. Her true intensive birding education began while interning at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Pennsylvania. From there she worked and traveled to various locations within and beyond the United States, including bird banding in Louisiana; counting raptors in Veracruz, Mexico; and working as a biologist for the California Condor Recovery Program. GOLF: MENTAL SKILLS TRAINING FOR GREAT PLAY Want to have something in common with Padraig Harrington, Ernie Els, Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, Justin Leonard, and Retief Goosen? Every single one of these major championship winners has, at one point or another, consulted with a sport psychologist to maximize their chances of consistently competing at the highest levels. And now you have the opportunity to consult with Dr. Kevin Roby, sport psychologist. Dr. Roby has worked with both amateur and professional golfers and has become known as “The Go-To Guy” for sports mental skills training here in Las Vegas. His clients have competed at all levels, from amateur tournaments to competitions on various professional tours, including the PGA Tour. You’ll learn multiple techniques for improving your play, including how to: develop and maintain a high level of confidence regardless of recent outcomes on the golf course; develop razor-sharp focus and improve your ability to concentrate only on what is relevant for your next shot; decrease anger, anxiety, and worry in demanding situations; and enhance practice so you will take your best golf onto the course instead of leaving your “talent” on the practice tee. If you have any questions or would like additional information about this presentation, you can contact Dr. Roby through his web site, www.drkevinroby.com, through e-mail at drkev4golf@aol.com, or by phone at 395-2170. TEQUILA: YOU’LL LOVE IT!

Session II: C122HA1139B Tue. 6-8:30pm, Jun. 19

The story of tequila began in the Tequila Valley, located in Mexico’s state of Jalisco, near the city of Guadalajara. Ninety-five percent of tequila is made in this region. Generally, blancos are perfect as aperitifs over ice with a slice of orange because they’re clean and herbaceous. Reposados are great for cocktails because they have more complex flavors like citrus and spice, and añejo’s oakiness is ideal for connoisseurs who love to sip. Chef Les Kincaid will guide you through the history and several tastings to help you understand that tequila is great as a cocktail or taken separately. You’ll love this class! You must be 21 to register. C122HA1201 Les Kincaid Wed. 6-8:30pm, Jun. 6 Total Wine & More, Boca Park Summerlin, 730 S. Rampart Blvd. 89145 (933-8740) $49 Includes all materials for the tastings

MINDFULNESS MEDITATION (MM)

Gain valuable knowledge to assist you in working with the bereaved or to help in coping with your own grief and the grief issues of loved ones. Topics covered will include attitudes to death and dying across time and cultures leading up to the writings of Elizabeth K端bler-Ross; the work of K端bler-Ross and responses to her work; the evolution of grief work; and local and personal issues of grief, mourning and resources for the bereaved. Your instructor has seven years of experience in grief counseling, death education, and research and is certified in Thanatology (the study of death, dying, and bereavement) through the Association of Death Educators and Counselors.

Learn the complete mindfulness meditation technique (MM) in this four-week class. Meditation is focusing and being aware of that focus. MM uses the present moment, living in the now, to quiet our minds and embrace life. Breathing will be our first and background focus during the day. We will explore the body as the focus with pain meditation used as the example. Learn to open to emotions instead of ignoring or denying them. Walking and eating meditations will be included. We will discover the kindness/ healing (metta) side of MM: visualizations and imagery used to open the heart and heal the mind, body and spirit. Your instructor has been teaching MM since 1992 in group classes, weekend workshops and residential retreats.

Home & Gardening CREATIVE ORGANIZATION FOR “PILERS” You’ve heard about all the advantages to getting your life, your work and your space organized. You make resolutions to finally get everything in its proper place. Yet the “mess” continues to defy any of your attempts to “clean up.” The problem is not you; the problem is that most of the ways we are told to organize were designed by organizing nuts. Their minds are methodical and organizing comes natural to them. Your mind simply won’t work that way! They tell you to file, your mind wants to pile. They tell you to throw almost everything away, you want to keep everything. Instead, learn how to take control of the mess. Learn techniques that are ideally suited for those who hate filing, who can’t keep one of those fancy organizer notebooks organized. Let’s face it, you hate spending time on this organizing stuff. Your workspace will look better, and you’ll be more efficient without turning into one of those “wound too tight” types. HOW TO WRITE A SHORT STORY

HOW TO WRITE A NOVEL

Learn what makes up a quality short story, and practice what you learn by writing your own stories each week. Study the terminology, structure, the author’s voice, theme, character, plot, the marketplace for short stories today, and the art versus the craft of short fiction. While a short story is an art form unto itself, to be honored as such, they are often the first attempts some writers make before trying novels. Many basics of fiction that will be studied apply to both. Your Emmy-winning instructor has TV and screenwriting credits including Quigley Down Under, Quantum Leap, L.A. Law and Griffin And Phoenix.

Learn the basics of novel writing: characters, theme, overall story structure, scene construction, with special emphasis on how to be more creative and how to plot. Focus will also be offered on practical factors, such as page and word count for different genres, how to get a novel written given a busy life, the commercial marketplace, how to try to get a literary agent, and the publishing world. Discussions will include how to combine your preference for which type of novel to write versus what might be more commercial. Your Emmy-winning instructor has TV and screenwriting credits including Quigley Down Under, Quantum Leap, L.A. Law and Griffin And Phoenix.

HOW TO WRITE A SCREENPLAY Screenwriting is juggling contradictions: it is an art, a craft, and a business. Real life-size human emotions yet with conflicts are large enough to justify the big screen. Stories from the heart, written with passion, but also with one eye on commercial and business concerns justify the huge cost of converting a plan on paper into life on film. Fundamentals will be covered: format, dialogue, characters, theme, and more, with special training on how to plot. Writing for the independent film world will be discussed, as well as business-oriented high concept plots and selling to the Hollywood studio system. Cannon Survey Center | 39 Online Education | 40 Summer Term | 42

Cannon Survey Center Resources Cannon Survey Center operates a computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) facility. This system enables precise control over the order of questions and the range of legitimate responses so that invalid or inappropriate responses are avoided. Information is also automatically entered into data files while interviews are being conducted. CSC also maintains a system that creates paper surveys in which information can then be scanned into the computer, eliminating manual data entry. In addition to optical mark recognition (e.g., Scantron forms), this system also provides hand print (ICR), machine print (OCR), and barcode recognition. The CATI system and the scanner system enable CSC to design and execute surveys in a timely manner, save your organization money, and improve data accuracy. Services • Research Design • Questionnaire Development • Form Design • Data Collection • Data Entry • Data Coding • Data Management • Data Analysis • Report Writing • Focus Group Facilitation For more information call 895-0486 or e-mail pam.gallion@unlv.edu. Class Cancellation and Refund Policy • The Division of Educational Outreach reserves the right to cancel any class or make any other changes it deems necessary in order to provide students with the best educational experience possible. • Course fees will be refunded in full if it becomes necessary to cancel a course, however, under no circumstances will the amount refunded exceed the amount of the registration fee. Educational Outreach will not reimburse students for the cost of travel or lodging in the unlikely event that a class is cancelled. Therefore, it is recommended that students traveling to attend classes make travel reservations that are able to be changed, should it become necessary to do so. • Educational Outreach will make all reasonable attempts to notify students of class cancellations or changes, using e-mail, phone, and fax contact information provided by the student at the time of registration. It is recommended you call 895-3394 a day prior to your class to confirm that the class will meet as scheduled. • We recognize you may occasionally need to cancel a registration. If you wish to receive a refund, we must receive a written statement (e-mail, fax, or postal mail) listing the course name and number, and giving the reason for cancellation. The direct link for the cancellation page is: http://continuingeducation.unlv.edu/ registration/refund/ or it may be faxed to 895-4195. Postal mail refund requests should be sent to Educational Outreach, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway, Box 451019, Las Vegas, NV 89154-1019. • Refunds of registration fees paid by credit card will be processed as a credit to the credit card account within seven business days of the cancellation notification. Refunds of registration fees paid by check will require a minimum of six weeks to be processed, to allow sufficient time for the check issued by the student to clear, prior to a refund check being issued. • Unless a separate policy is stated for a specific class or classes, the following applies to all cancellations and refunds: Prior to the first day of class 100 percent of the fee paid will be refunded minus a $10 administrative fee. If class has begun or concluded, refunds are decided on a case-by-case basis by calling 895-3394. All refunds must be done within 14 days of the last class. All of the provisions of the Class Cancellation and Refund Policy are in accordance with relevant Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) rules and regulations adopted and approved by the NSHE Board of Regents. Payment of Fees • Payment must be received at the time of registration. Students are responsible for the payment of all fees associated with each course in which they enroll within the time period specified by UNLV. • Students who fail to pay fees when due, will be required to pay late fees and any additional penalties established by UNLV.

44

Failure to pay applicable fees when due will result in referral to an outside collection agency. • The Division of Educational Outreach cooperates with the Clark County District Attorney’s office to prevent bad check losses. A $25 service fee will be assessed for any check that is returned from the bank for any reason. Post-dated or two party checks will not be accepted. Any returned check shall be made good within ten days after notification to the student, or the student will not be permitted to attend any classes. Professional Credit Upon registering for a professional course (real estate or management) for the purpose of obtaining professional credit hours, please include your Nevada license number. Continuing Education Units Some of the courses in this catalog qualify for CEUs (Continuing Education Units). CEUs are a way of measuring and officially recognizing the time and effort you have put into your education for your job or profession. One CEU is equal to 10 hours of instruction. CEUs do not constitute academic credit. They are maintained by the Division of Educational Outreach and provide you with a transcript upon request. So, what do you do with a CEU? As you update your credentials, are in line for a transfer, promotion or evaluation of your current position, or want to make a vocational change or explore a new career, the CEUs demonstrate the time, energy and interest you have shown in broadening your horizons. University of Nevada, Las Vegas Alumni UNLV alumni with a baccalaureate or advanced degree are entitled to a 15 percent discount on ONE select class per semester as deemed by the Educational Outreach office. This discount may only be used by alumni (Not their spouses or children). Class Location Most courses are held on the UNLV Paradise campus, but some are held at other locations throughout the county and are identified in the course description. Office Hours The Division of Educational Outreach Information Desk is open Monday through Thursday, 8am-9pm, Friday 8am-5pm, and Saturday 8am-5pm except for university holidays. Please see http://edoutreach.unlv.edu for any exceptions to this schedule. Parking Permit Information Parking permits are required on both the UNLV main campus and the Paradise campus. They are required 7am-7pm, Monday through Thursday and 7am-1pm on Fridays. Parking permits are available in the Educational Outreach office and at the UNLV Parking and Transportation Services Office (895-1300).

After 5pm, students may park in faculty/staff spaces in all lots with parking permits except those located in lots M (North of the Dining Commons and the Student Health Center), I (North of the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies), and G (between Frank and Estella Beam Hall and Tonopah Hall). When parking in metered spaces, you must pay the meter prior to 7pm. Alcohol on Campus Alcohol is not permitted on campus unless specifically for an Educational Outreach course. Students must be able to prove that they are 21 years of age prior to any class that involves alcohol. Students with Disabilities Through an active and continuing affirmative action program, the university provides equal opportunity and treatment in employment, admissions, and all programs in an effort to avoid discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex and disability. If you have a documented disability that may require assistance, you will need to contact the Disability Resource Center to coordinate necessary academic accommodations. The Disability Resource Center is located in the Reynolds Student Services Complex in Room 137. The phone number is 895-0866. Students Under the Age of 18 Students under the age of 18 will need approval from Educational Outreach prior to registering. Copyright Policy The university requires all members of the university community to familiarize themselves and to follow copyright and fair use requirements. YOU ARE INDIVIDUALLY AND SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR VIOLATIONS OF COPYRIGHT AND FAIR USE LAWS. THE UNIVERSITY WILL NEITHER PROTECT NOR DEFEND YOU NOR ASSUME ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR EMPLOYEE OR STUDENT VIOLATIONS OF COPYRIGHT AND FAIR USE LAWS. Violations of copyright laws could subject you to federal and state civil penalties and criminal liability as well as disciplinary action under university policies. To help you familiarize yourself with copyright and fair use policies, the university encourages you to visit its copyright web page at: http:// www.unlv.edu/committees/copyright. Equal Opportunity Policy It has been and will continue to be the policy of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, to be an equal opportunity institution. All decisions of admissions and employment are based on objective standards that will further the goals of equal opportunity. The university is committed to assuring that all programs and activities are readily accessible to all eligible persons without regard to their race, color, religion, gender, national origin, ancestry, age, disability, Vietnam-Era and/or disabled veteran status, any protected class under relevant state and federal laws, and, in accordance with university policy, sexual orientation.
