CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS: PLANNING YOUR WORK AND WORKING YOUR PLAN Surviving an unexpected organizational crisis often depends on how prepared your company is in its communications strategy. In session one of this course, you will learn proactive communications planning for natural disasters, accidents, product recalls, and other organizational crises. You will understand why an in-place crisis communication plan is critical and gain an appreciation for reasonable balance between minimizing legal liability and informing the public. You will then research and write your own crisis communication plan for review and critique with the instructor. In session two, you will learn the actual communication skills necessary to execute the media response portion of your plan. You will learn techniques that encourage a partnership rather than antagonistic approach to working with reporters, including “negotiating” what information you will and won’t volunteer at a given point in time. You will also learn the value of “key messages” and how to frame them so that the reporters will consider them newsworthy. Finally, and most importantly, you will experience an on-camera interview scenario, fielding questions from both print and broadcast journalists in a one-on-one, personal experience. Your instructor is a former investigative journalist, government public relations executive and established media relations consultant. The Division of Educational Outreach Offers More! Cannon Survey Center | 55 Online Education | 56 Summer Term | 57
Cannon Survey Center Resources Cannon Survey Center operates a computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) facility. This system enables precise control over the order of questions and the range of legitimate responses so that invalid or inappropriate responses are avoided. Information is also automatically entered into data files while interviews are being conducted. CSC also maintains a system that creates paper surveys in which information can then be scanned into the computer, eliminating manual data entry. In addition to optical mark recognition (e.g., Scantron forms), this system also provides hand print (ICR), machine print (OCR), and barcode recognition. The CATI system and the scanner system enable CSC to design and execute surveys in a timely manner, save your organization money, and improve data accuracy. Services • Research Design • Questionnaire Development • Form Design • Data Collection • Data Entry • Data Coding • Data Management • Data Analysis • Report Writing • Focus Group Facilitation For more information call 895-0486 or e-mail pam.gallion@unlv.edu. Class Cancellation and Refund Policy • The Division of Educational Outreach reserves the right to cancel any class or make any other changes it deems necessary in order to provide students with the best educational experience possible. • Course fees will be refunded in full if it becomes necessary to cancel a course, however, under no circumstances will the amount refunded exceed the amount of the registration fee. Educational Outreach will not reimburse students for the cost of travel or lodging in the unlikely event that a class is cancelled. Therefore, it is recommended that students traveling to attend classes make travel reservations that are able to be changed, should it become necessary to do so. • Educational Outreach will make all reasonable attempts to notify students of class cancellations or changes, using e-mail, phone, and fax contact information provided by the student at the time of registration. It is recommended you call 895-3394 a day prior to your class to confirm that the class will meet as scheduled. • We recognize you may occasionally need to cancel a registration. If you wish to receive a refund, we must receive a written statement (e-mail, fax, or postal mail) listing the course name and number, and giving the reason for cancellation. The direct link for the cancellation page is:http://continuingeducation.unlv. edu/registration/refund/ or it may be faxed to 895-4195. Postal mail refund requests should be sent to Division of Educational Outreach, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway, Box 451019, Las Vegas, NV 89154-1019. • Refunds of registration fees paid by credit card will be processed as a credit to the credit card account within seven business days of the cancellation notification. Refunds of registration fees paid by check will require a minimum of six weeks to be processed, to allow sufficient time for the check issued by the student to clear, prior to a refund check being issued. • Unless a separate policy is stated for a specific class or classes, the following applies to all cancellations and refunds: Prior to the first day of class 100 percent of the fee paid will be refunded minus a $10 administrative fee. If class has begun or concluded, refunds are decided on a case-by-case basis by calling 895-3394. All refunds must be done within 14 days of the last class. All of the provisions of the Class Cancellation and Refund Policy are in accordance with relevant Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) rules and regulations adopted and approved by the NSHE Board of Regents. Payment of Fees • Payment must be received at the time of registration. Students are responsible for the payment of all fees associated with each course in which they enroll within the time period specified by UNLV. • Students who fail to pay fees when due will be required to pay late fees and any additional penalties established by UNLV. Failure to pay applicable fees when due will result in referral to an outside collection agency. • The Division of Educational Outreach cooperates with the Clark County District Attorney’s office to prevent bad check losses. A $25 service fee will be assessed for any check that is returned from the bank for any reason. Postdated or two party checks will not be accepted. Any returned check shall be made good within ten days after notification to the student, or the student will not be permitted to attend any classes. Professional Credit Upon registering for a professional course (real estate or management) for the purpose of obtaining professional credit hours, please include your Nevada license number. Continuing Education Units Some of the courses in this catalog qualify for CEUs (Continuing Education Units). CEUs are a way of measuring and officially recognizing the time and effort you have put into your education for your job or profession. One CEU is equal to 10 hours of instruction. CEUs do not constitute academic credit. They are maintained by the Division of Educational Outreach and provide you with a transcript upon request. So, what do you do with a CEU? As you update your credentials, are in line for a transfer, promotion or evaluation of your current position, or want to make a vocational change or explore a new career, the CEUs demonstrate the time, energy and interest you have shown in broadening your horizons.

GO BACK TO GET AHEAD New Program Available to Help Facility Managers Achieve Industry Credentials Facility management is about more than maintenance functions in such buildings as offices, hotels, hospitals, and schools. You have to think strategically and operationally to manage hundreds or even thousands of square feet of space, multiple teams of employees, and all business support services. You also have to face diverse challenges on a daily basis. Your goal is just as complex—to ensure a safe, cost effective, and energy efficient environment for all who occupy the building. We’re offering courses to help you enhance your knowledge and skills so that you can exceed that goal and achieve the Facility Management Professional Credential from the International Facility Management Association. You can complete the entire program or sign up for individual classes. Look inside for more information or visit http://continuingeducation.unlv.edu.
