“The course in Leuven was incredible. It was one of the best experiances I have ever had.I was able to learn a great deal with the added benefit of making new and amazing friends from all across Europe. I cant recommend the course enough.EDSA and GC Europe are an amazing partnership and put on an incredible lavish experiance for all of us. Thank you again for this great unforgetable opportunity.” Uma Madhav, Cardiff Univeristy, U.K.
"It was my first time to join an event organised by the EDSA. I am an international person. I love meeting people from other countries. Especially the people who share the same interests about something. EDSA representatives did alot of efforts to feel us home during our stay. The hotel location was in the center of the city. We had a well arranged guided city tour followed by a wonderful dinner. We stayed until late in the evening together with Dr. Piyush Kandelwal talking and drinking. After that we went to a local bar. The second and the last day of the workshop was also very learnful. After that we stayed one night more in Belgium with another participants to enjoy cheerful Belgium in the both day and night." Faro Sana, ACTA, The Netherlands
"It was an excellent hands-on learning experience using the various types of Composites (layering technique) and Glassionomer cements by GC in restoring a tooth to its normal function and aesthetics. With a memorable tour of the city of Leuven together with fellow dental students and dentists from Europe, what more could we ask for? A highly recommended course for any dental student." Faith Chan, Cardiff University, U.K.

From my own side I'll be there for whatever you need me and I'll be more than simply glad to help you in any possible way that I can. Best Wishes, Vasia Karathanasi, DDS, MSc EDSA Past President 2000-02

EDSA at National Dental Student Lobby Day in Washington DC
The American Student Dental Association honored to have a Representative of the European Student Dental Association attend our National Student Lobby Day in Washington D. C.. This will be a great way for EDSA to experience one of the most important and best attended ASDA events. Having the opportunity to extend this invitation has been our pleasure, and it is our organization’s hope that it will foster continued collaboration between our two organizations.

BDSA SPORTS DAY BDSA sports day, one of the most anticipated events in any dental student’s social calendar. Up there with your first extraction and orange Wednesday is an event that fails to disappoint year after year. The hustle and bustle that ensues as hundreds of dental students pour into Preston from all over the United Kingdom, fashionably late as expected, is an exciting time. UCLan being the hosts for the BDSA Sports Day 2009, meant I was able to meet and greet hundreds of dental students as they flooded into their hotels, and was delighted to see so many familiar faces and new alike. Well, what can I say about the BDSA sports day which hasn’t already been said! Firstly, a great atmosphere was created during the first night at the UCLan union. Massive dance floor, massive bar and of course fun loving and crazy dancing future dentists all in fancy dress enjoying night as if it was there last could you ask for anything more? After the first epic night we knew what awaited us the next morning, yes the thing that we all came here for ‘the sports’. The cream of dental sporting teams across the UK battled it out to see who would become number one, even though Leeds won the netball proudly it wasn’t enough. Our EDSA friends Cardiff University held onto their sporting crown for the second year running, last year Cardiff took crown at the Leeds BDSA Sports Day, we were so determined to stop this from happening again. But, what can I say Cardiff were just too strong, well done to Cardiff. After a full day of sports what do we need, yes you’ve guessed it ‘a night out’. A barrage of coaches left Preston for Blackpool ready rave the last night away in style in the biggest UK nightclub called the Syndicate. What an amazing night full of laughter and sporting banter wherever you would look you would see a dentist, just like lectures. Not surprisingly the coaches after the night out were full of dentists who were fast asleep tired from all the fun. A massive thank you to UCLan for the great time all I can say is bring on BDSA Sports Day 2010. Kirpal Singh Benawra, Leeds

But finally my couriousity won: How are the students there? Do they learn anything differently? So on the 6th of December I found myself sitting in an airplane with 3 colleagues of mine. At the airport a friendly girl called Diana picked us up with her car. It was full with toys for a children´s project - as she told us. We would see parts of it. That sounded really nice to me. Diana took us right to the surgical station. We saw her extracting teeth. She did a great job there. After having traditional "Sarmale"- meat rolled in cabbage leaves- in a very noble restaurant we went to see the Leonardo da Vici exhibiton. There we saw many reconstruated machines the master had designed. In the evening we went bowling where we got to know many new students. Some of them had just got back from an exchange in Croatia. We had a lot of fun and once again got to our hostel late. Early the next morning we met at the clincs again. It was a part of the children´s programme: the final stage, where they were actually treated. As I watched I noticed the students working on upright sitting patients.

HOW TO STUDY DENTISTRY IN VIENNA
Getting into studies At first you have to apply for an entrance test called EMS; eligibility test for medical studies. As it is pretty challenging and also difficult to prepare yourself properly for the test, to pass it is your first huge goal. The exam consists of 10 subtests, which means you are tested on various categories, for example text comprehension, your ability to figure out logical components, your way of systemic thinking and much more. What’s even more important is that the test lasts for about five hours which leads to the fact that you are forced to be highly concentrated over a long period of time. However, with a little bit of luck and cleverness you’ll manage to pass the EMS. Then you are ready to start your studies at the medical University Vienna or Innsbruck as one out of 1020 human medicine

LETTER FROM UKRAINE
Hey everybody! That’s
a
quick
note
from
Borys
Averbukh. I had my article published 3 years ago in 2006 edition of EDSA magazine. It was about my school. The admission to the dental school
is
competitive
and
was
previously
based on passing different dental school tests (which
were
usually
chemistry/physics,
biology and Ukrainian language), though right now there’s a different centralized system of applying to colleges (not school related). It gives you an opportunity to apply to a few schools at the same time, which is favorable. In order to become a dentist you have to spend five years after high school to be able to proceed to the next educational level, which is internship. Right
now
I’m

my
dental
internship (general practice residence), so I’ve decided to let you know what it is. The internship here in Ukraine is a twoyear

qualified licensed dentist. It consists of two parts: theoretical and practical. The former is 8
months
long,
and

of
lectures, the latter is 12. During these 12 months you have rotations: prosthodontics (or orthopedic dentistry, as we call it in Ukraine), oral
and
maxillofacial
surgery,
therapeutic
dentistry (which means operative dentistry and endodontics), pediatric dentistry (which includes orthodontics). After you finish the internship, you have the formal right to start your own practice or work for somebody. Before that, you’re not allowed to work as a dentist.
LETTER FROM UKRAINE
I personally do my internship at Odessa City Dental Clinic #9. It actually is a pretty big clinic with two hundred people working here. It includes 4 departments: therapeutic, orthopedic, surgical, and a pediatric dentistry department. Students have the opportunity to rotate at this clinic from their third year at dental school for 3 years up to graduation. After that, they can go for the 2-year internship, and then some stay here to work as permanent doctors. The head of the clinic, Dr. Igor Avrotinsky, makes
