The project site went through a lot of changes considering the fact that is a historical landmark and that it’s suppose to be next to the new proposed Penn Station designed by S.O.M. Certain changes included taking out the vaulted glass that cut the building in half. Likewise, the triangular trusses in the inner courtyard were elevated towards the top to prevent accumulation of snow, water, etc.

During its lifetime, MSG has been renovated once already, and its planning to renovate again within the next years. The renovation plans has not only been up for debate, but it has been a slow process and protested because it initially agreed to move and find a new home. Developers such as Steve Roth have planned to move MSG across the street to the western annext of the US Postal Service; where it currently lies as an empty landmark. The US Postal service has been planned to become the extention and new home of Penn Station. This move will allow more air-rights, more air quality, and better circulation. It will also work with the future conditions that are planned to take place in the Hudson Railyards and boulevard.

My goal for this project was to relieve underground congestion in midtown Manhattan by moving and making a new home for Madison Square Garden in adjacency with the new extension of Penn Station. Madison Square Garden; also recognized as the world’s most famous arena; has been built 4 times over a period of about 120 years. In addition, every time it has been built again it has allowed for improvement in its surrounding area. Madison Square Garden not only needs a new home but also a new architecture in which will attract more visitors from all over the world. The current MSG has not only been an out of context structure but has also taken over and diminish the greatness of Penn Station; one of the world’s most used transportation system.

“...The design process behind the ”layered house” was derived by creating a series of spaces that divided its maintenance utility use with that of the living. the idea of the “onion principle” was applied in order to sustain the inner cores to its warmest level. it also structured the coordination of spaces within the house. knowing that “sip panels” come in 4’ x 4’ dimensions, a grid was chosen to control the size of the spaces and create a modular sequence that will be efficient not only in its gains and environmental aspect, but material usage as well. the house is programmed as three self sufficient volumes that are capable of independent climate control. these volumes are stacked to allow for the natural flow of air and in turn forms the architecture. the house presents itself with a sense of opaqueness and transparency. the opaque areas provide service for the house, which needs no natural sunlight. this line of service/opaqueness is embedded within the earth to achieve a constant thermal barrier against the harsh cold. the transparent areas designates the living areas, a place for social gathering and sleeping. the most insulated area of the house is the bedroom, seeing as how it is layered by other program which acts as a buffer, protecting it from the cold [this can be seen through plan and section]. the house allows not only for stack ventilation but also cross ventilation. due to the strong winds from the northwest, the house takes advantage by providing operable louvers that can be adjusted accordingly to allow for air flow through the house. coming in from the western louvers and venting through the operable glass panels in the east. the house uses photovoltaics on the roof of the buffer space as a way of harvesting energy from the sun and providing it to the house. the triple glazed low e glass was used along the west, south and eastern facades to allow for the most gain and best visual connection to the landscape in which the house is situated. poly-carbonate operable skylights allow for direct sun penetration from the rooftop, while it is open and indirect sunlight while it is closed. the flexibility of using many spaces from the operation of the panels allows for the architecture to expand in hierarchy. each use can be multiplied or dimished according to the season it applies to. the layered house is condensed in layers and each layer guides the user into a specific function...”

photovoltaic grid panels are attached to on top to absorb solar rays and thereby provide energy for the house. the energy is then transferred to electricity to allow for certain activities to happen, such activities like cooking, turning on the light, using the computer or watching tv, can be access by the energy that is being converted to electricity.

the design is sloped to direct and collect rain water for storage in the water tank system. this will allow for the water to be stored and be distributed within the necessary components of the house. radiant floor heating pipes were applied to provide different comfort levels in the house. these pipes run through all 3 volumes of the house and either one or two can be shut down to save energy.

This project is located by the gowanus canal in brooklyn, new york. the organization of the project is divided into 3 areas: commercial, community, and residential. these three areas are connected within a spine which resemble the intermediary spaces of the design. sustainable features are also applied to conduct a healthier environment and produce energy efficient elements. to obtain the greatest possible attendance for commuters and visitors, a proposed water taxi station was introduced to allow for the building to economically sustain itself and make its mark within the community. the commercial area is set up on the ground levels and is mainly proposed to obtain an immediate effect on the community. several events and conferences can occur to attract the people living inside and coming into the building. this strategy welcomes newcomers and thereby gathers many people from different areas of the city. the community space behaves as a gathering area for all groups and ages. the many voids are for the people to come and view the different features that the design obtains from the inside and outside of the building. the structure formation allows for commuters and visitors to have a direct visual connection. the vast amount of openings are applied to let lighting penetrate into the lower level floors. the gathering areas are not only public but private as well since they are also set up on the apartment complex. residents can either choose an apartment close to the canal side or street. the top levels are assemble in units that surround the perimeter of the building. residents can also engage as the spectator during some events because they obtain easy access from the stairs and elevators.

for this project the main focus was for the furniture to adapt to the demand of the human needs. the use of the furniture can be transformed and be used for 4 main purposes when it comes to living. analyzing the needs, the design made can change from a sleeping bed to a sitting couch to a desk and to a closet. these 4 uses are the main uses that can occur inside a living space. the design can be positioned in many places and not take a lot of room for better comfortability. the thought behind the design phase was to approximate the highest demand of the user by requiring an medium to adjust to it. ranging from many posibilities and shapes, the process stimulated to a form that can quickly serve as an adequate device for human living. this project was not only schematical but had to be realized in a human scale model to test if the structure and stability function when used by any individual. the election of material also directed the design to its results. a lighter and more expensive material could easily be integrated to quickly transport and change the use. overall, the design for this can be managed and put in any home, studio, or office, because it adapts to its surrounding. it can behave like the main attraction or it can be put on a side depending on the users needs and taste. furniture design challenged not only critical thinking but also tested many possibilities to not let it remain static. the transformation process demanded to not only view the design in one way but many different ways as well, this allowed for in-depth focus and visualization of function. the design function turned out to be what it was intended for: quick, changing, and compatible with its surrounding environment.

63

In this position the furniture behaves as a seating couch. Storage can also be placed on the opposite side of the seat to better acommodate the demands of the user. An adjsustable structure member is attached on its sides to change the comfort zone levels.

The furniture turns into a desk and a hollow piece slides out and turns into a sitting bench for the desk. Storage supplies and utilities can be placed on its left side of the table. This piece can easily be positioned anywhere to gather information and place items anywhere in its place.

64

65

The furniture rests on the floor in this position and acts as a bed. Storage can also be kept safely inside, and later retrieved from inside shelves. Storage space inside this design can be divided into segments or the inside pieces can be taken out to store a wider and longer equipment.

The furniture rests on the floor in four legs to behave as a closet. Storage can be stacked in various ways to obtain better room and use. In this position the closet can quickly become a desk by pulling down its front end.

...taking a continuous line and changing its shape and function to serve human commodities helped to begin the intial design procedure. the idea of seeing the continuity in more detail led to it being separated into a series of sectional ribs. each rib had to contain a function and have a wrap around in order to be complete. these ribs are organized in this order to allow for one to interact with one another and make for one to have a different experience while entering. the location is sited in the old architecture school (shepard hall) by the main entrance of the lincoln corridor. these series of sectional structural ribs create a moving effect that allows one to visualize and experience its moments. these ribs are wrapped around with transparent fabric to create different static effects that show the object movement. these captured movements allows for one to enter, sit and lean towards it. the ribs are organized to form different paths and thereby create a continuous wrap around between the two columns of the lincoln corridor. the shifting and form of the structural rib dictates the function of its use. these structural ribs can work individually or together to accomodate the use inteded by the user. this project was generated by a group of four students and i was involved with every phase of the design and construction. i managed the team and also worked extra hours for the project to become a reality.

The distortion of lines and vectors in 2 dimension and 3 dimensions led to the sequences that originated from the design element. Below are intial attempts to discover and begin to think about the formal uses of how an individual can interact with the object in front. Possible ways to stop, rest, and walk through was taking into consideration to begin the process. By testing the movements and phases that each piece can dictate, the design usage became more evolving and merging within itself to either be something while its isolated or form something new while it is together as a whole.

as soon as entering, one has the option to either sit or view what’s in front.

the object splits to allow different exits and private and public space is created.

1

4

the continuity continues and the private and public spaces switch sides to exit.

the sit then opens to view its oposing side by extending and letting visibility in.

6

3

the exit is wide enough for people to interact with the object and relax.

a mini storage/table evolves to put or hold things together with a large board display.

By introducing a new way into the columns that are proportioned, the design spreads its layers into both sections of the linearity that the column dictates. This will allow for the people to engage with the object from many different directions.

74

75

To show a sense of transparency a translucent fabric cloth was installed to contrast the birch wood and lead the person into its properties. This gives a weaving effect as the pieces intertwine with each other throughout their phases. As shown the sizes vary in width, length and height, this is due to the activity that occurs in each phase.

The pieces were made in templates and bolted together. Each set up and design had a double layer of birch that was connected by an in-between element to hold and attach them together. This strategy allow for more stability, strength and range of depths within the design.

76

77

the definition of spaces are varied through the structure of the individual piece. it wraps inwardly and outwardly to a motion that directs the user to acommodate into its form. double joint connections are applied to each template to allow individual pieces to hold sustain formation. each piece holds about 9-12 pieces that are bolted together to an entity.

78

79

each section of the sequence is dimensioned to human scale. the proportions vary from the function of the piece. each time the piece revolves its radius raises to allow for an appropiate connection within the neighboring pieces. this attachments retain the structure and harden the position of the pieces in a sequential order.

the framing of the structure maintained its rythm by following series of bracings that allowed greater stability. the allocation of determining the outcome of the dimensions led to the similar effects that the pieces had in relation to one another. the curvelinearity of the structures remain stead to allow one to visualize the fluid movement tha t remains constant in its whole functionality.

located in lexington avenue between 105th street and 106 street. the art incubator is a design strategy to reach out the artists’ community. by becoming a rising cultural town, the incubator is set to provide artists’ residences, display shows and storages for future works. by understanding the needs of the community, the incubator distinguished itself from the rest of the blocks. giving room for one to enter into the park opposite the site, and leaving spaces for one to commute with the artist either outside or insde the premises of the site. to undergo the design process, many factors were considered to deliver different experiences inside and outside the building. shifting from left to right, up and down, developed many possibilities to let light in and emerge various visual connections within it. the width and length of the design also provided many ways to nominate the public from the private. these procedures helped to indicate the hierarchial spaces within the building itself. overall, the design became an center of attraction and living machine that made its visitors and artists’ work be visualized and heard. this building also has the potential to host events and conferences for the future. the flexibility and proportions of the design allows for the many different types of events to adapt with one another. artists’ residences have the option to also gather with the public or with themselves with the provided social spaces within the design.

located at chelsea piers on 12th avenue between 23rd and 24th street. the emergence of a new water taxi station will allow for the flow of transportation to settle down and balance. visitors from new jersey can use this new mean of travel for a quick arrival at the city. the people of chelsea will not only use the facility to travel but to commute as well since its design opens ways to connect with nature. the different widths, slopes and height variations are derivations of process strategy to either slow down or quickly get the user up and running to its intended destination. the different parts of the design separate private from public and merges some spaces with others to allow for outsiders to socialize with the commuters. the derivation of users dictates the major importance of the spaces inside and outside of the station. the water taxi station uses double notch system to sustain its heavy oak wood material. this will not only strengthen the integration of glass and slopes, but will also allow for an effect to go in fluidity. multifunctional elements were created to accomodate its different users. these elements change in height and length due to its different activities that take place within the station. the changes can be seen as a progression of movement and it dictates the change of its area by opening and closing up spaces.

the class module configuration is a strategy to maximize the use of classrooms within a content. this idea came to evolve by setting up two sufficient made structures that would fit into two trailer trucks that would adapt to any desired setting. this methodology can also be arranged for uses such as conferences and living spaces. this approach is a proposal to all clients who would prefer a better fitting spaces that would be economically fit for their sufficient needs. this structure can grow together with additional components to obtain its highest use. the windows on the sides are operable and allows great views and light to penetrate in. optional green planting above the canopies can be added to the configuration set up to absorb heat and provide a refreshing environment within its surrounding. the skylight is also another component that can be added to provide more lighting and create an atmospheric experience within the inside of the structure. the proposal is to allow flexibility in its use and its meant to adapt to any type of environment.
