Introduction This programme is suitable for learners with various levels of English who wish to improve their general English communication skills. General English will help you to • develop your fluency by providing you with many opportunities for practice; • develop all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing); • increase your knowledge of Irish culture; • practise and improve your intercultural skills; • develop your ability to learn languages independently. The typical timetable is 09.00 -13.00 each day from Monday to Friday (20 x 50-minute hours). You will have further language development work to complete outside class. You will also have the opportunity to use our language learning facilities for private study in the afternoons. Where sufficient demand exists, classes can be run to help students prepare for internationally recognised examinations, e.g. IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge ESOL.

Dates, Fees and Other Information The General English Programme runs for 45 weeks of the year and is divided into four sessions, offering students various entry dates. While students will find it more beneficial to start at the beginning of a session, it is also possible to start on any Monday. Courses of varying lengths are possible. The minimum course duration is two weeks.. The following are the dates on which this year’s programme will run:

Useful Information for All Course Participants Accommodation

Insurance

Accommodation can be booked in advance, according to each participant's requirements.

Insurance is the responsibility of course participants. All participants should arrange medical insurance in their own country before departure. EU nationals should bring their European Health Insurance Card. Travel insurance is recommended.

Possibilities include: - Homestay: Accommodation with local families can be booked for the first weeks of a course or for the full length of stay. Homestay can provide an insight into Irish culture and opportunities for extra language practice with English speakers. There are two options available: o Traditional Homestay: this option includes halfboard (bed/breakfast/evening meal) Monday to Friday and full-board at the weekends. Laundry is also taken care of in the family home. Single rooms are arranged unless otherwise requested. Price: €165 per week until 17 December 2010. o Self Catering Homestay: In a Self Catering Homestay the family does not provide meals for the student. Instead he/she has access to all cooking facilities and looks after his/her own meals. Price: €85 per week until 17 December 2010. - Campus Accommodation: The University has five self-catering student villages on campus. These consist of individual study bedrooms, with a communal kitchen and sitting-room in modern apartments/houses, which accommodate either 4 or 6 people. All bedrooms are spacious single rooms. Accommodation is normally in the newest of the student villages, Dromroe, Thomond or Cappavilla, where all bedrooms have an en suite bathroom. Campus accommodation is usually only available for longstay students during the academic year. Early booking is essential and it is advisable to check availability before booking. Facilities Available: Electric heating, cable TV, card telephone in each apartment, common room, laundrette, carpark, security, enclosed area for bicycles, Village Manager in residence, computer link to Internet via UL network. Price: €130 per week until 26 June, 2010; €175 per week from 27 June until 28 August, 2010.

Transport • Limerick is located just 20 kilometres from Shannon International Airport (SNN) and is easily accessible from the airport by bus or taxi.There are flights to Shannon from many European cities. There are also several flights per day from London. Further information about Shannon Airport can be found at www.shannonairport.com. • Airport transfers from Shannon can be pre-arranged with the University of Limerick Language Centre and cost €85 one way. However, participants are advised that taking a taxi from Shannon to Limerick is less expensive than an airport transfer and can be easily arranged at the taxi desk in the Arrivals Hall at the airport. • Commuter bus tickets are available from the city bus station.

Payment • Before applying for a course, please read and familiarise yourself with our Conditions of Enrolment. (Available on-line at www.ul.ie/languagecentre) • In order to secure a place on the course, an administration fee of €80 should be sent to the Language Centre with a completed application form. The administration fee is separate from the tuition fees and is non-refundable. • When the administration fee is received, an invoice/statement for the balance of fees will be issued. • Based on the experience of recent years, applicants are advised to book early to secure both their choice of course and accommodation.
