One for all fundraising day On Friday 15th November our school held a pyjama party for BBC Children in Need. Everyone came to school in their pyjamas and they could also bring a teddy bear. Children in Need is a charity that, through fundraising, aims to make a difference to the lives of children all across the UK. They provide grants to projects in the UK which focus on children and young people who are disadvantaged. The most popular style of pyjamas in our school this year was the onesie, with teachers and pupils going for the all in one look! It was the coolest day ever getting to come to school in pyjamas.

On your marks, get set, ho ho ho! A dash of festive cheer for runners •
Words by Lawrie O’Brien •
The starting line was a sea of red when over 35 pupils took part in the Bickerfold Santa Dash. Pupils from Pinfold Primary and Bickerstaffe Primary put on their Santa outfits and gathered for the second year to run the course. The race was won by Jacob Ashburner in a super personal best time of 9 minutes 45 seconds and he was followed across the line by three other runners from Bickerstaffe Primary, Lawrie O’Brien, Reuben Warwick and Thomas Ralfs. Mr Draper, Miss Wade and Mrs Hall all dressed up to take part in the race and everyone ran in good spirits.

Dance at the disco •
Words and Photography by Joseph Ormesher •
The PTA organised a disco for all the pupils in October to help raise funds for school. Lots of children attended in different costumes from scary to funny and random to weird! The winner of the infant category was Laolu Ogundia (Skylander) and the winner for the junior category was Jacob Ashburner (Gravedigger). The disco was held in the school hall where everyone got into character and had a great time.

A diamond garden Official opening in autumn sunshine On Friday 11th October we had the opening of our Jubilee garden. We had a special visit from Mrs Owen, who left school last year when she retired. The ribbon to the new outdoor area was cut by Mrs Owen when she declared the garden officially open. The week before the garden was opened a working party, consisting of staff, children and parents took time out to finish the transformation. Lydia said: “I really like the working party especially painting the gates and planting flowers with Mrs Hodgson as well as digging up mud and putting it in the wheelbarrow.” Max added: “I found a frog while I was working which was exciting.” The gates and fences were painted; bark was put down and lots of planting in and around the whole area took place. The autumn celebration was a wonderful occasion and everyone enjoyed the grand opening. We now have an amazing area to extend pupils learning into the outdoors and of course, have lots of fun too!

Infant pupils entertained everyone with their traditional story of the Nativity during their annual Christmas performance this year. With beautiful singing, glittering wings and super costumes the production was a great success. Brilliantly directed by teaching staff the children told the story of Mary and Joseph and their trip to Bethlehem. It was the perfect start to the festivities of Christmas for all who came to watch the show.

Top dollar week for friendship A bake off to remember By Wiktoria Wisniewska This term during friendship week we had a go at baking. However the baking turned into a bake off with each class making something different. Tuesday Class 3 made flapjacks in a microwave because Mr Draper didn’t want to use the oven! Bethan Ashburner said: “I enjoyed mixing the oats with the syrup. The flapjacks took four minutes in the microwave and I enjoyed decorating them.” Wednesday Class 1 made rice crispy cakes. Jessica Ormesher said: “I loved pouring out the chocolate, getting it all over my hands and licking it off!” Thursday Class 2 made reindeer gingerbread men which they turned upside down and put icing on. Freya Ramsden said: “Squeezing the icing was great and so was decorating them.” Friday On Friday it was the turn of Class 4 to shine with our Millionaires Shortbread, which took two days to make. My favourite part was making the ganache and the marble effect with white and milk chocolate; we shared them out equally and sold the left over shortbread for 25p a slice.
FESTIVE FUN Plenty of variety at church Christmas fair By Isobel Housley On the 30th of December the Holy Trinity Christmas Fair took place at Four Lanes End Mission. This year there were stalls both inside and out. Inside were stalls selling toys, clothes, books and cakes. There was also a fantastic raffle with great prizes along with a tombola and lucky dip. The Brownies and Guides sold cookies in a jar, which they had made themselves. Outside there was The Cabbage Box selling local fruit and vegetables, an enterprise project stall from Winstanley College and also a lady selling homemade Thai curry pies (the vicar was straight to that one!), Fudge
Heads, run by Thomas and Sophie Ralfs along with Lawrie and Olivia O’Brien once again sold their range of fudge. Sunday Club had a Christmas decoration stall and raised over £60 for church funds. Along with the church community there were lots of visitors from around the Bickerstaffe area. A visit from Father Christmas brightened the spirit of things so sweets were seen in every child’s hand. The soup and turkey baps were lovely and the place was buzzing with enthusiasm. The fair was a big success and lots of money was raised.
Boxes of joy By Wiktoria Wisniewska
In school every year we help Operation Christmas Child by filling boxes with small gifts and practical items. The Operation Christmas Child appeal’s aim this year is to give presents to one million disadvantaged children in 156 countries worldwide. Children and teachers at our school make
shoeboxes filled with all sorts of lovely things along with essentials such as soap, face towels and tooth brushes. Chocolate and crisps are not allowed along with no war related toys or political items. Each box is wrapped and secured with an elastic band. Finally you stick on top of the box a special boy or girl
sticker with the age of the child you would like to receive the shoebox. The shoeboxes are very important to the children who receive them and it is a way for us to show them that we care. Our school is very proud of being part of an appeal that reaches out across the world to other children.

RAISING MIN Y DON By Isobel Housley Since the second Friday of the school year Class 4’s Isobel, Faith, Joseph and Jacob sold apples and school produced eggs to parents and teachers. Class 4 is going to Min y don next year in March so some of the children started a fundraising enterprise. Min y Don is a Christian adventure centre in Wales where every two years Class 4 have the opportunity to go on a recreational visit for one week. The apples came from the two apple trees at the back of the school field by the lodge and the free range eggs came from our school hens. Later in October the range of fruit was promoted to cherry tomatoes (fifteen per bag at 25p) and eating apples (at 25p per apple). The stall was held outside the school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday. Hopefully we can extend the range and look to sell new produce in the New Year to raise some more money. Teaching assistant Mrs Smith said: “I made a lovely apple crumble with the apples that were sold to me by the Min y Don stall!” I also asked stall supervisor Faith what she thought sold the quickest, she said: “I think that the apples sold the quickest because autumn is a popular time for apple pies and eating apples.
SHOCKING CPR!!!!! By Wiktoria Wisniewska
On Tuesday 1st of October Alan Ralfs, a parent governor and nurse came into Class 4 to teach first aid which focused on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). CPR is a first aid technique that can be used if someone is not breathing properly or if their heart has stopped. We learnt how to save a person from dying or choking by using life-saving skills. CPR is very important and can make the difference of life or death for someone. If a person collapses and you are near you may be able to help save their life. Alan also showed us how a defibrillator works, which is a machine carried on ambulances that delivers an
electric shock to the heart if someone is in cardiac arrest. Most of the class got to have a go performing CPR on a manikin which was really good. Alan also showed us how they check for ear infections and he showed Faith the ear drum that is inside your ear by using an otoscope, a special lighted instrument that shines a light to check inside the ear. When your ear is infected you will find that your ear drum will be red and will be very sore. It was a great lesson and shocked us all into learning!
Viking captures class attention By Wiktoria Wisniewska On Tuesday 11th November we had a visit of a Viking in Class 4, called Thor Ewing. He came in to give us a whole lesson about Vikings. On our school iPad we connected with Isobel Housley, who was in Alder Hey hospital because of her accident, and shared the lesson with her. We had the visit because we are learning about Vikings in history this term. During the morning we had a very interesting lesson about the Gods of the Vikings. We talked about Thor, the most powerful God, Odin who rides a horse and Freya the goddess of love. In the afternoon we had a more interesting lesson looking at objects and making things. We had a go at making a fresh flower by using graining stones that had handles and a cork in the middle of the bottom stone. We put wheat into the hole and then each had a turn at pulling the handles. We also had the opportunity to look at Viking weapons and their armour such as swords, spears and shields. It was a fun day and he was really good at telling us the stories about Vikings. Although he stayed in character all day I knew he wasn’t a real Viking because he kept saying ‘in our times’ about life today. Alex Brogan said she enjoyed playing the six string harp as part of the Viking day and we are all looking forward to learning more about Vikings.

A night to remember By Lawrie O’Brien In November Joseph Ormesher and I were guests at the Educate Awards 2013, held at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. Close to 300 hundred people attended the event which
celebrated and honoured schools and teachers in the region. It was really exciting and felt amazing to be inside such a magnificent building. Four secondary schools performed at the event including Archbishop Beck Catholic Sports College’s saxophone ensemble and The Academy of St Francis of Assisi’s award-winning choir. Merchant Taylors’ Schools stunned the audience with songs from their incredible production of Les Miserables but, the one I enjoyed most was Formby High School’s Mundo Africa choir, who were brilliant! There were 16 categories and each winner was presented with an award on stage. Joseph and I would like to go to Rainford High Technology College next September so it was great to see
them win Outstanding Commitment to Sport in a Secondary School. We had the opportunity to meet the principal, Ian Young who said: “I’m obviously delighted for the students involved and for the school. It’s one of those awards which is all about their efforts and their performance as a team, and also the hard work of the young people who have performed in their own individual sports as well. It’s fantastic for the school to have been recognised.” We also got to meet the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Gary Millar, who was a guest at the event and also owns Parr Street Recording Studios. He told us about the different musicians who have recorded there, including Rizzle Kicks, one of my favourite bands.
Ex pupil visit By Alex Brogan
A surprise visitor for Year 6 Ex pupil Sophie Ruddock came back to school on the 21st of October. Sophie moved school during the Easter holidays earlier this year to Norwich with her family. It was unexpected when Sophie came back to school but a lovely surprise and also exciting because we haven’t seen her in a while. Sophie left in Year 5 and she is now in Year 6. Sophie arrived back in Bickerstaffe on Saturday 19th October to stay with family and friends. Sophie and her brother Alfie like living in Norwich and they both also like their new school. Sophie is now 11 years old. We all regretted Sophie leaving after her visit because we didn’t want to say bye to her all over again, but I’m sure she will come back soon. Sophie was really glad to eat a school dinner during her visit because she prefers them more than the ones in Norwich! During the day Sophie enjoyed lessons with our class about writing a dilemma and Vikings. Faith said: “Although Sophie left school last term it felt like a normal day with her, as though she had never been away at all.”
Marvellous Moulin Rouge By Faith Currie On the 11th October Class 4 went to see the musical production of Moulin Rouge at Ormskirk School. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to visit a secondary school, especially Year 6 pupils. Unfortunately we were only able to watch part of it as it was so long, but we still really enjoyed it. The characters and costumes were amazing! I especially enjoyed the singing and dancing, because they were so good and well-rehearsed. We all had a great time on the trip to the school and it was fun to travel there in the mini bus. I enjoyed it so much that I am going to watch the film Moulin Rouge on DVD because I want to know what happens in the end.
Thomas’s touchdown at Wembley By Joseph Ormesher
Year 5 pupil, Thomas Ralfs, went to Wembley Stadium in October to watch a National Football League (NFL) International Series game of American football between San Franscisco 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars. With a love for watching sport in the family, Thomas travelled to Wembley with his granddad and uncle to a packed out stadium to see the game. San Francisco 49ers beat Jacksonville Jaguars 42-10 to the delight of Thomas, as he supports San Francisco 49ers. A game is played between two teams of eleven players with goal posts at each end. There are various ways to score in a game with a touchdown being the most valuable scoring play, worth six points. This match was the eighth game the NFL has played at Wembley since 2007 and it seems to have a growing fan base in the UK. Thomas really enjoyed the game and is looking forward to watching other NFL matches in the future.

Film reviews Frozen by Olivia O’Brien The film is an animated fairy-tale about two sisters, Princess Elsa with magic powers that can freeze everything and Princess Anna. It is definitely not a boring film and has great action; it kept me on the edge of my seat! I loved the creativity and would put the film at the top of my list of favourite films. There are reindeer, horses and a snowman that comes alive and lots of other characters. I watched the film in 3D and hope to watch it again, it was so good!

Catching Fire by Isobel Housley The second Hunger Games film, Catching Fire was released on the 21st of November. It is about what happened after Katniss and Peeta won the 74th annual Hunger Games. The 75th Hunger Games is soon approaching and it is announced that it is going to be a quarter quell. Every 25 years there is a special Hunger Games called a quarter quell. The third quarter quell is upon them and the tributes will be selected from the existing victors (winners) of the Hunger Games. The tributes picked include Katniss and
Peeta (District 12) Joanna (District 7) Finnick and Mags (District 4) and Wirus and Beetee (District 3). With poison fog, mutant baboons, blood rain, mini tsunamis, lightning striking a massive tree and spinning cornucopias, the arena is mayhem not to mention half of it is a mini pacific ocean and the other half is an Amazonian rainforest. It is a 12A so I would say Y3/4 upward.

Millionaire’s Shortbread
Tasty!
Gorgeous caramel in a crunchy biscuit base topped with a rich chocolate ganache, unbelievably easy to make! This recipe makes enough for 20 pieces. Ingredients • 1 x 397g can Carnation Caramel • 300g milk chocolate • 150ml double cream • 100g white chocolate • 300g shortcake biscuits • 100g unsalted butter Equipment Large food bag Rolling pin 23cm square baking tin, or equivalent Spatula Cooker Pan 2 x mixing bowl, preferably glass (Pyrex) Cocktail stick • Crush the shortcake biscuits in a bag, use the end of a rolling pin. They should be crushed into rough crumbs. • Grease the tin well, then melt the butter in a pan and mix it in with the sandy crumbs. • Spread the sandy crumbs into the base of the tin, to make an even layer. • Spread the caramel into the pastry base – don’t be tempted to beat it first or it will go runny! • Melt the dark chocolate and cream together gently, in a bowl, over a pan of simmering water. Beat until smooth and glossy. This mixture is called a ‘Ganache’ (pronounced Gan-ash). • Gently spread the chocolate mixture over the caramel base. Melt the white chocolate and drizzle with a teaspoon over the top of the tart. Use a cocktail stick to swirl the chocolate for a marbled effect.

Cracking Christmas Fair The Christmas nativity and panto performances were hard acts to follow this year, but the school Christmas Fair lived up to its billing. It was a full house with parents, grandparents and children tasting the delights of different stalls and trying their luck on the tombola. Prizes were everywhere with both the auction and raffle proving a great success. Thanks to the fantastic effort of the PTA working around the clock to get everything ready and the support of parents and teachers, the evening raised over £750. Santa’s Grotto added some magical Christmas sparkle and Mr Draper made sure there was no elfing around!
