To my fab four children, Andrew, Jeremy, Sara, and Matthew, who helped make this book a reality. This is an activity we enjoyed throughout the years. This activity was designed to help my children with language skills, auditory memory and visual skills. We know your family will enjoy this book and activities as we did.
To the Colonel (Michael B. Ball) for being my Administrative Assistant. Love to you all.
Activities for Teacher and Students
Before (reading)
Ask students what they call their grandparents. 1. Write down names students call their grandparents. 2. Ask students to name their favorite food. Write the food on a sticky note.
3. Have the student place their sticky note under the corresponding letter of the alphabet.
4. Discuss foods students eat at their grandparents house. 5.
During (reading)
As you read the book to students discuss the pictures and remind them the ABC order of the foods as they are introduced.
1. As each new food is introduced in the story have the students do a thumbs up if they like the food and thumbs down if they don’t like the food. 2.
After (reading)
Hand a student a sticky note with a picture of an apple and the word apple and have them place the sticky note under the correct letter of the alphabet.
1. Hand a student a sticky note with a picture of a banana and the word banana and have them place the sticky note under the correct letter of the alphabet. 2. Continue having the students place the sticky notes under the correct letter of the alphabet. 3.
This book should be read in the following progression
Student 1
“I ate dinner at Grandma and Grandpa’s house and I ate an apple.”
Student 2
“ I ate dinner at Grandma and Grandpa’s house and I ate an apple and a banana.”
Student 3
“I ate dinner at Grandma and Grandpa’s house and I ate an apple, banana and a carrot.”
The story continues in this pattern throughout the book. Each student remembers what food was eaten first and second and third and fourth… and then adds a new food with the next letter of the alphabet.
