The Koori Curriculum

The task of choosing where to spend your training budget can be both an intricate and tiresome one. Sorting through the raft of training providers and ensuring they meet your needs on all levels involves an investment of your attention and time. The task becomes even more complex when it is on a pedagogical theme that you already find challenging, such as embedding Aboriginal perspectives. Well, in this edition of Edextras: Your Inspiration Publication we have done the work for you! 12

The Koori Curriculum is an Aboriginal Early Childhood Consultancy directed by Wiradjuri Woman and Early Childhood Teacher Jessica Staines. The consultancy strives to support educators to meaningfully embed Aboriginal perspectives as part of their day to day curriculum. The Koori Curriculum offers a range of professional development programs including; yarning circles, mentoring, in service training and public workshops. This year they are particularly excited to be collaborating with MultiVerse to host The Aboriginal Early Childhood Conference. We sat down to chat with director, Jessica Staines and asked for advice on the importance of resources in embedding aboriginal perspectives in early childhood settings. “To respectfully include Aboriginal perspectives in early learning curriculums it’s important that educators do not teach about Aboriginal people as if they are the topic, theme or interest. This practice others Aboriginal people and ensures that the Aboriginal perspective is tacked

onto the program rather than being interwoven naturally and positioned in context throughout all learning spaces.” Jessica went on to elaborate, “When acquiring resources to aid in the inclusion of Aboriginal perspectives educators should reflect on common reoccurring interests e.g. space, under the sea or superheroes and attempt to source Aboriginal materials that compliment this.” She finished by telling us, “Similarly, educators can reflect on the play spaces that are set up in their class rooms and ponder how they can include an Aboriginal perspective in block corner, dramatic play or the literacy table? By sprinkling cultural resources across early learning spaces, we are creating more meaningful and authentic environments for children to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and culture in context. Indigenous Perspectives There are many days of observance throughout the year focused around Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. But what do these days mean to the early years sector and how do you ensure your approach is not a “once off”?

The 2018 theme hopes to educate our countries citizens about the honourable and courageous Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women who have helped to shape our nation and have been a big influence in our countries history.

Reconciliation is multifaceted, featuring the prominence of unity, race relations, equality and equity, institutional integrity and historical acceptance. National Reconciliation Week (NRW) memorialises two momentous dates in Australia’s reconciliation journey, the 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

A highlight of NAIDOC Week is the annual Deadly Awards that acknowledge the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Investigating the NAIDOC website and finding the award winners to create a hall of fame in your service is a notable way to develop educator’s cultural awareness of who Aboriginal people are today. During the first full week of July educators across Australia grapple for ideas on how to respectfully acknowledge NAIDOC week in their classrooms. Including Aboriginal perspectives in early childhood curriculums should occur on a daily basis instead of just during national days of significance. With this in mind NAIDOC week provides an opportunity for educators to look beyond their services gates and engage with their local Aboriginal community. The theme of this year’s National Reconciliation Week is “Don’t Keep History a Mystery”. There are significant gaps of knowledge for most Australians in regard to our Aboriginal history. In order for us to understand intergenerational trauma and the issues facing Indigenous communities today, we need to be educated on the injustices suffered by our countries first nations people. National Reconciliation Week is a reminder for early learning services to register with Narragunnawali via Reconciliation Australia’s website. The Narragunnawali program encourages services to embark on the journey of creating a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). RAP’s act as a road map for services, enabling them to reflect on their practices and relationships in the classroom, around the service and out in the community. Looking for a way to revitalise the garden at your school or community group? You can contribute to the community, while growing and promoting the importance of healthy eating and physical activity.

There are 15 grants to be won, valued at $1,000 each. Thanks to Yates® Gardening and Life Education, the Growing Good Gardens Grants are designed to encourage young people to create their own gardens that promote a healthy lifestyle, with a chance to bring their designs to life. Early learning centres, schools, youth and community groups (including sports clubs) across Australia are invited to submit a design for a ‘healthy garden’ within their school grounds or community. Grants will be awarded to quality well thought out entries.

Whether they are bought, borrowed or created there is no doubting that resources play an important role in educating and developing children in early childhood services. But just how do you strike the right balance? Innovator, creator and director, Su Garrett explores this very question with us.

Resources. Every Early childhood Service has piles of resource catalogues in their staff room. There are always the new shiny thing on offer on Pinterest, and Facebook groups are full of ideas being shared – we can do that, we should get that. It’s easy to get carried away purchasing things that are unnecessary and add to the amount of “stuff” in our storerooms.

sellers have become the best friend of many Services, places like Reverse Garbage, op shops like the Salvos Shops or Vinnies, eBay and Gumtree. By investing a bit of time, you can find most things you need. … examples of this are home corner crockery, wooden bowls and baskets, there are plenty of these in Vinnies.

However, if we are really serious about our role in the sustainability of our world, then we should seriously think about our planet’s finite resources and be very considerate with our actions.

Resourcing within the community is also a great way for families to invest in the Program, many families have items that when collected can be useful, home corner items, recycling items for art, such as milk bottle tops – these are great used in maths activities, loose parts and in art.

Explore & Develop Annandale subscribes to the sustainable principal of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The best way to be more sustainable and to make an impact on the use of our planet’s resources is to “Reduce” what we purchase. This means thinking about whether we need the resource. Are we really going to use it? Can we get the same learning outcome by using a resource we already have? When we decide we need a resource the first thought is does this resource already exist and can we obtain it? Second Hand

We have recently commenced a project of making Boomerang Bags – using material donated by members of our community. The bags will be distributed within our community shops for consumers to use as an alternative to plastic bags. Having said all that, when we purchase new resources we ensure the items have play affordability, are open-ended, can be used by a variety of age groups and are ethically sourced.

We have many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander resources in our Service. From music, tablecloths, dolls, literature and art, it is embedded throughout our space. When purchasing resources we assess the artist and reseller to ensure they are ethical. Last year we worked with Educational Experience testing their Boolarng range of resources which have been developed with communities across Australia. Our babies particularly engaged with the My Country Backdrop by Worimi Country artist Kristy Anderson. We used the backdrop on the floor of our babies playspace, they crawled around on it with under the sea projections on the walls. We have the Marrung Capes to our dress ups in our preschool room. It has been particularly interesting to see how children use these in different ways, around their shoulders, their waist or their heads. The animals on the capes develop their own superpowers in superhero play and become a topic of conversation, adding to the knowledge of Australian animals.

As art is always at the core of our program, we have a continuous need to find resources to support children's engagement. Again, this is an opportunity to be mindful of purchasing resources that allow children to be creative and express their emotions. We try not to get pulled into purchasing something that leads the child into creating a specific tangible output. We regularly forage for natural materials on our excursions, however we purchase good quality implements such as pencils, paints, brushes and clay tools. Choosing tools made from wood or bamboo are more sustainable than those made from plastic. Often when purchasing cheaper products, the investment is wasted when the pencil doesn’t last, or the colour isn’t bold enough and doesn’t engage the child in the experience.
