Say: Listen as I say the sentence: I see the sun

Say: Listen to the sentence, then we will repeat it together: We like school

Say: After I say the sentences, you will repeat them into your phoneme phone.

SKILL-BASED SOUND REVIEW

Before reviewing the skill, sing “The Alphabet Song” together. Display the sound card /ă/ in the pocket chart.

Say: We are reviewing the short vowel sound, /ă/. Watch as I form my mouth for the /ă/ sound Display the letter/stroke card a in the pocket chart. The letter a makes the /ă/ sound in apple

Say: Form your mouth and make the /ă/ sound Open your mouth wide, pulling back the corners of your lips Say the letter sound as I tap the apple (/ă/) Say the letter name as I tap the apple (a)

Display the letter side of the letter/sound strip in the pocket chart.

Say: I will point to each letter on the strip You will give me a thumbs-up if I point to the letter a c c c b c a

SKILL-BASED FORMATION PRACTICE

Introduce the lowercase letter a path of motion for students to apply. Display the letter/stroke card for letter a.

I Do

Say: Let’s study the lowercase letter a We see that the lowercase letter a is made up of two strokes: over around and down. Motion the formation with your arms as you say the path. Encourage students to mimic you.

Do

Say: Now it’s your turn. Skywrite the lowercase letter a as I say the two strokes: over around and down.

Do

Say: Use your sensory pad to practice writing the lowercase letter a. Listen as I say the two strokes: over around and down. Now I want you to trace the lowercase letter a on your pad: over around and down. If students are ready, they can remove the letter a card from their sensory pad and practice writing the lowercase letter a on their own.

Teach capital and lowercase letters together or in isolation. Display the letter/stroke card for capital letter A.

Say: The capital letter A is made up of three strokes: slant down, slant down, across. Motion the formation with your arms. Encourage students to mimic you and skywrite the letter as you say slant down, slant down, across. Transition students to their sensory pads as you continue to say the capital letter A path.
