Meet the Developer: Sue O’Connell is a K–5 mathematics education leader with years of experience as an elementary teacher, reading specialist, math coach, and professional learning specialist. Number Pairs That Make 10 Fact Fluency Objective: Demonstrate fluency with addend pairs that make 10; demonstrate fluency with subtraction from 10.

Students decompose 10 into two groups in kindergarten. These centers build on that work as students connect it with addition equations (e.g., 10 = 4 + 6) and with related subtraction facts. These centers provide repeated practice for students to decompose 10, represent the decomposition with equations, and begin to commit the facts to memory.

Center Progression Center

Description Students model addend pairs with ten-frames to visualize the parts and whole in addition facts. Students use mental math strategies to think about the missing part of 10 when given a number and model their thinking with a rekenrek. Students apply prior knowledge of addend pairs that make 10 to solve related subtraction math facts.

Fill the Frame Materials: Decahedra Dice (1 per pair)

Students take turns modeling numbers with counters on a ten-frame. Students discuss how many more make 10, color a model, and write the equation.

Students play a pathway game. They roll a number cube and move their marker that number of spaces. The student says the number they land on and tells how many more would be needed to make 10. The other player checks with a rekenrek. Say: Today, you will play a game to practice making equations that equal 10. You are a bee heading to your hive. Place your counters on START. Partner A, roll the number cube and move that many spaces. Look at the number on your space and tell your partner how many are needed to make 10.

Ask: Partner B, how many frogs started on the table? (10) How many are showing now? (3) How many frogs hopped away? (7) How do you know? (I know 3 and 7 make 10.) Say: Partner A, show the frogs in the cup. Count them to check. Tell your partner what subtraction fact you could use to find the missing number (e.g., 10 – 3 = 7). Introduce the Investigation Display the Day and Night Card Sort. Allow students to look at the pictures and share their observations. Then, as a class, sort them into different groups: day and night. Day: children playing tennis, camel in a desert, tree in a field, lifeguard chair on a beach, family riding bicycles, wind turbine in a field Night: campsite, city skyline, stars above an observatory, stars above trees, moon above a town, moon above trees • Ask: What clues did you use to help sort the cards? I noticed the day cards have a blue sky or a shadow. I noticed the night cards have a dark sky and the moon or stars sometimes.

• Say: In each of the day images, you may have noticed a shadow, or a dark area formed when an object blocks sunlight. Shadows form only when there is light.

Investigate Give each student a copy of the Day and Night printable. Divide the class into six groups. Give each group a blue tray with the materials. As a class, find the general location where students live and mark the location with an X or dot using the permanent marker. • Say: The globe represents Earth and the flashlight represents the sun. Dim the lights and tell students to shine a flashlight on the mark. • Say: When the flashlight, or sun, is shining directly on a location, it is daylight.

• Ask: What happens to the mark as the globe spins away from its starting position? What do you think this represents? It moves into darkness. I think it might be showing the sun going away, or a sunset. • Ask: Is it day or night when the mark is in the dark? night • Ask: What happens to the mark as the globe spins back to its starting position? What do you think this represents? It moves back into the light. I think it might be showing the sun coming back, or a sunrise. Instruct students to watch the mark as the globe spins. Prompt students to record their observations on the printable as the globe spins. • Ask: What pattern do you observe if you keep spinning the globe? The mark moves through a pattern of light then dark and then back into the light and then into the dark again.
