RIGHT TO EDUCATION

Education : My Birth Right

Enlightening the world around You! A

s a citizen of a country, the first and foremost right that every citizen has is the Right To Education. It enables the citizens to be empowered and to see the world through educated eyes. As a citizen of the country, each and every child is entitled to education and this is what the Right To Education aims to achieve. Here are some statistics which would tell you the condition of the world in terms of education: •There are 75 million children in the world who do not have access to some of the most basic forms of education. •The world has more than 150 million children who are currently enrolled in primary education classes but will soon drop out before completing primary education •Two-thirds of these drop outs will be girls •The world over has more than 776 million adults who have never got an education and will never see it too. What does the Right to Education Mean? The Right To Education is a universally recognized law. Under this law which was declared by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 has worked relentlessly to make the world a more educated place. It is one very important Human Right for a human being and every citizen whether in the world or in the tiniest of villages is entitled to receive education which is due to him. Some of the specifications that the Right To Education entitles are: •Right to compulsory free education in the primary level •Make secondary level education accessible to citizens. • Develop equitable higher education in the society Right to compulsory education will ensure that every child will have the right education to move forward in life and will be able to live a better life. Consequently, it also means that he or she can move forward in life with dignity. At the end of the day, 16

Right to compulsory education will ensure that every child will have the right education to move forward in life and will be able to live a better life. Consequently, it also means that he or she can move forward in life with dignity. this education will help him/her to procure a job and hence earn his/her living. What does the Right to Education hope to achieve? Right To Education has been defined by many to be an enabling right. A right that would help the less privileged to move forward in life, and would thus enable them to also get a voice to speak. If the under privileged or the less privileged are given an a chance to move forward with education, they are empowered because they now have an extra skill, a skill which would help them to access a host of rights which the government has provided for them. Why Right To Education is Important? The most important thing that the Right To Education will do is help eradicate myths and misconceptions. For years, illiteracy has plagued the country and has been the immediate cause of all problems in the country and the world. To remove all these problems, the country needs have educated people. Right To Education will educate the common masses that they have their rights which will be recognized and they will be able to seek help because they are now aware about their basic rights. Now, that they have been given the Right To Education, they will be able to hold the government accountable for the things that they would not be getting. Right To Education is basically a Human Right

In a country like India, a majority of the children between the age of 6 and 14 haven’t had primary education. The Right To Education Act introduced in India has made primary education free and compulsory and hopes to bridge the yawning gap between the privileged and the less-privileged. which helps reduce the prevalence of cheats and middlemen. A common man who is educated will now have the power to sign his own name in the bank and not seek the help of any other individual. It also means that he can now read his own newspaper-whether Hindi or English and know what is happening around in the world.

What the Right To Education hopes to achieve is make the country a much better place to live in. In an educated world, people, especially the ones which are a little less privileged and are in the bottom rungs of the society can come up and seek their rights. They can seek their rights because they are no longer ignorant to the words in front of their eyes. They can now ask the government to give them their rights because they are entitled to have them. In a country like India, a majority of the children between the age of 6 and 14 haven’t had primary education. The Right to Education Act introduced in India has made primary education free and compulsory and hopes to bridge the yawning gap between the privileged and the less-privileged. The act itself is a deliberate way to understand the problems that the country is facing in the form of illiteracy. The Indian government is trying hard to achieve the golden aim- “the aim to make all children acquire primary education till the year 2015” and the Right To Education will help them achieve that.

DISTANCE EDUCATION

The need for Distance Education

W

hen Distance Education was first founded in Boston in the early 18th century, the aim was simple to help those learners who didn’t want to study in the traditional classroom structure. That was when Caleb Phillips had promised to teach interested students ‘short hand’ by mailing the instructions on snail mail. Since then, distance learning has come a long way. There are modern technologies being used to impart distance education to students now. Universities who first started this program For years coveted universities had hundreds of aspirants who wanted to get through their prestigious course but many a time, lack of seats led them to despair. It was under these circumstances that the universities decided to expand their learning process in the form of distance learning courses for those students who did not get the seats or for 18

those who were constrained by time, distance or both. The first such University to go forward with the distance learning program was the premier London University way back in the year 1858. The program has since then been called the University of London International Programme and now encompasses undergraduate, post graduate and diploma courses which have been designed by schools such as the London School of Economics. Slowly, the trend spread and universities around the world started offering some of their most coveted courses to students eager to learn, but without the right resources and finances. Distance learning courses didn’t take place in the traditional setting of a classroom and hence were cheaper than most of the courses. Now, almost every college in India and abroad has the right resources to have distance learning

programs. One of the first universities to start the distance learning program in India is called the Indira Gandhi National Open University. One of the bets distance education centers in the country, this college offers courses in undergraduate, post graduate and diploma levels in subjects including- Fashion Technology, Hotel Management, MBA, Retail development, Rural Development and a lot more. The expert faculty corresponds to the distance learners by a variety of means and technologies including the internet, radio, videos and printed matter. The respective subjects and courses are taken up by experienced professors who are stalwarts in their field of study. But what is the need to have a Distance learning program? Though there is a huge number of distance learning institutes in the country, many people are frazzled by the need for a distance learning program and why people are fixated to have it even though there are plenty of normal courses. There are various advantages associated with a distance learning program. 1. It is an Individualized form of Study: A distance learning program can be tailor-made to suit the needs of each and every individual. For example, if a student responds better to printed material, he/she can ask for printed textbooks and study material to go forward with his study. Another example of a learner is if he or she responds to an audio visual medium. In this case, he/she would be able to learn better if he/she can learn through audios and videos. Thus, you can order the kid of material you want during the course of your study. There is also one on one interaction with the students, which makes it easier for the instructors as well as the students to understand each other’s problems in a better way. 2. It’s an added bonus, an extra course: Many people are now not satisfied by a single degree. Most want more degrees in their area of expertise But many do not have the time and the freedom to study what they want to. There might be various constraints along the way-an impending marriage or a new member in the family. This is why distance education can be a good sent relief. With the freedom and flexibility that a course in a distance learning program gives you, you can easily take up a subject of your choice without having to worry. You can study the subject at your won leisure time and take your own pace to go forward with the course. A distance learning program gives you all these and more. 3. Saving Money and Time In today’s dog-eat-dog world, two of the most important resources that everybody would like to save on, is time and money. Since a distance learning

course is not based on a strict classroom setting, the learners do not have to spend time on commuting or money on classroom based lessons. There are no uniforms to wear and no buses to commute in. You have the luxury and comfort to sit in your home and study at a pace you are comfortable in. A student of a distance learning program can change his pace while studying-for subjects with those he/she is comfortable with, he/she can learn them faster. Otherwise when they are new subjects, he/she can take his own time and learn them. Either way he does not have to invest a lot of time in commuting, which in itself is a big advantage. 4. No Alternation of your personal schedules: A student who takes up a distance learning program does not need to change his itinerary completely. For example if his daily schedule requires him to attend to a work, he/she can easily complete it and then go forward with studying his distance learning course. He/she is not bound by time to attend a class. He/she can easily start self-studying when he/she is free. This flexibility allows a learner to devote time to studies without the pressure of performance. 5. It’s cheaper than conventional courses: A distance learning course is more often cheaper and more affordable than a traditional classroom program. Teachers or instructors also do not have to invest time in commuting to the classroom. They can easily video conference with students if they have doubts or talk to them over the telephone. It is a much easier way of communication than a traditional classroom setting. 6. You can Work while you learn This is one advantage that has made a distance learning program really popular with people who would like to continue with their jobs and also pursue studying a subject of their choice and get a degree. In Distance Education program, you do not have to sacrifice on your job hours. Since you can pursue your studies whenever and wherever you want, you do not have to worry about losing your job. For people who really want to explore their studying options more, but at the same time do not want to leave their earning distance education can be a perfect addition to your career graph. In conclusion, a distance learning program gives a student or a learner much independence and freedom to chart their own career paths not only does a distance learner get his or her degree, but his way to the degree is much more relaxed and easier. In the process, they can save a lot of time and money as well. A distance education program can be a great investment in today’s world where most people are haggled on the basis of time, and are very conscious about where they spend their money.

DISTANCE & REGULAR

Distance Learning comes as a Blessing to students who want to study further while continuing with jobs or who might not be able to attend a full-time course for various reasons.

T

he Education system around the world has undergone significant changes in the past few decades. The fast paced economic development in the developing countries is not just demanding a greater number of graduates per year but it is also looking for multi talented individuals that have knowledge of more than one specific field or those who have the capability of amalgamating their knowledge with industry specific training and take the challenges of the developing economy head on. In this scenario, that Distance Education has emerged as a significant means of attaining educational qualifications. Besides this, another major reason for an increasing number of students preferring distance learning to regular colleges is the deterioration in the quality of higher learning in Universities and college campuses. The sudden demand of the economy for greater number of graduates has pushed the governments to open new Universities and colleges but amidst this ruthless expansion of Higher Education system, the quality of regular education has suffered major. Experts suggest the following reasons for the decaying regular education system in India. The country has not been able to retain the best teaching talent simply because of the lack of research facilities and growth opportunities and a number of prestigious institutions have been forced to compromise with the curriculum, teaching pedagogy and examination system in order to keep pace with the ‘standards’ set by globalization. This has led to a lack of time in the hands of students and teachers for an all encompassing and thorough study of disciplines. The examination patterns have been dogmatically adjusted without paying attention to the depth of learning. These trends have promoted ‘factual’ and ‘rote’ learning under constant examination pressure while the demands of the growing economy are just the opposite. The cost of regular learning has been irrationally increased which has lead to the exclusion of a number of talented students from humble backgrounds. This has

also affected the competitive environment in even the best higher educational institutions. Before we move on to elaborate the benefits of Distance Education, it is important to underline an often unnoticed fact regarding higher learning. Educational experts have time and again emphasized the importance of ‘Self learning’ at the university level. With the intellectual development of an individual, the nature of the guidance needed in learning changes while the role of a teacher slowly gets reduced to that of being just a mentor. While a kindergarten kid has to be taught through examples, a researcher merely requires a few strings of thought and orientation to progress from her/his guide. Now that the regular colleges are growing increasingly incapable of even mentoring the students, there is no surprise that Distance Education coupled with ‘Personal Contact Class’ system is picking momentum. Even if we keep our discussion to the academic aspect of learning, abstaining from drawing a list of socio-economic benefits of Distance Education over Regular Learning, we can enlist the following advantages of Distance Education : 1. It provides ample time to grasp the concepts, self-questioning and exploring the discipline with freedom. 2. It allows you to work and learn at the same time. A number of people pick up a corresponding degree along with a job and start experimenting with the new things that they have learned. 3. There is almost no burden of assignments, presentations, examination and admission formalities, which seem to make an unending cycle in regular colleges. 4. No pressure of coping up with syllabus. 5. Enough time to cross the language barrier, in case a student has trouble in the language of the medium of learning. 6. Personal Contact Classes where the teachers focus on your particular problem areas. 7. Enough time for peer learning and group study.

PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION

T

oday’s world is a very competitive one. Every student in today’s world is now is aware of what he/she wants. They mostly choose the course that they like and pursue them for higher studies and in the end get the job of their dreams. That is why professional courses are now becoming popular with many students now. Academic courses are fast losing their foothold in the market now because of the fact that professional courses give the students a higher advantage and they are already trained in a career which they would want to pursue jobs in. Thus, as a result, they would be at an advantage when they are studying in a professional course.

The Need for a Course in To

The first and foremost problem that many people face before joining a professional course is that they either underestimate or sometimes overestimate their inborn capabilities. Choosing a career for you is often the hardest of choices. Most of the students are confused which is why they end up making the wrong choices. The path to the right career option is wrought with difficulties such as-lifestyle choices, the viability of the profession and whether it would give long term returns. But the first and foremost problem that many people face before joining a professional course is that they either underestimate or sometimes overestimate their inborn capabilities. This primary mistake is many a times a career breaker, because people realize it very late that they have chosen a wrong career. The changing economy is now opening itself to newer forms of professional careers which would require the presence of specialized people. These people are specifically trained to handle the requirements of the job. Since, the employers are now specialized to handle certain kind of jobs, they can easily contribute to their skill-sets which would not only help them to grow in the company but would also help the company in realizing its goals and objectives. How should you determine the Right Career Choice for yourself : In order to choose the right career path for yourself, first and foremost, determine your capabilities. Know your strengths and weaknesses and most importantly decide where your interests are. This step is important because the rest of your life you will either be enjoying what you do or be straddled with work that you detest. So, tread carefully on these slippery grounds. Thus, it is better to take time and find out what would be best 26

suited for you rather than cringing for the rest of your life. Your career should help you grow professionally as well as personally on the long run. Why is there a need for a professional course? The most important need for a professional course is that there are higher chances of getting a job if they take up a professional course rather than having a simple degree. When you take up a professional course, you are honed in a particular and specific subject rather than just as general studies. Additionally on a college with a professional course, you can easily choose internships in places with your choice and interest. Most of the teaching that takes place in these professional courses is very intensive, specific and subject oriented. In other colleges where the degree courses happen, the teaching is more relaxed and generalized. After you have passed a professional course, the entry to various careers become easier as most of them require certification at the entry-level. And armed with the right qualifications and skill-set, a person from a professional course is more at an advantage than a person from a common degree course. What are the different types of Professional Courses? There are two types of professional courses-

I June 2013 I www.educationiconnect.com

a Professional oday’s World

1.On the basis of industry classification: a.Traditional Professional Course: These courses confirm to the common courses that are available like Engineering, Medicine, Law and Civil Services etc. They are the ones, which are most common in the industry. b. Non-Traditional Professional Course : These include those professional courses which are not that common, including Hotel Management, Mass Media, Mass Communications, Fashion Designing and Aviation. 2. On the basis of duration: a. Short-term Courses: Most short-term courses range for six months to a year. They are usually certification courses or vocational courses and are meant to hone particular skills only. At the end of the course, they are trained in specific skills. b. Long Term Courses: Long term courses take place in classrooms that are meant to last for more than a year. The focus is on long term training being imparted to make the students proficient in a certain course or specific subject. How can you get through Professional Courses? Most of the professional courses require you to have a minimum qualification of 10+2 in the relevant stream of your choice. Some of these professional colleges also require you to pass private exams which are

held by these colleges only. Others have specific ways of clearing the exams which include appearing for national level or state level exams or a combination of both. The selection is based on the scores obtained in these exams. Some of the universities with highly specialized professional courses like Mass Communication or Management might also require the candidates to appear for interviews and group discussions for the final selection. Which are the best and the most popular professional courses in India now? 1. Engineering : This is by far one of the most prevalent courses in the country now. Reports suggest that engineering is also one field which has the maximum number of employment opportunities. India has many engineering and technical institutes which provide courses in Engineering at Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctorate levels. 2. Management Courses : Next to Engineering Courses, Management courses are also very popular with the students. Various colleges and universities offer Management courses in Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Diploma and Doctorate courses. The biggest advantages with these courses are that once the students are done with the courses, they can easily get recruited in multinational companies at very high salaries. 3. DISTANCE EDUCATION

T

he world of today is changing. There is change in every field like from the education sector to the sporting field; change is evident everywhere. The education sector is one of those sectors whose growth is one of the most evident ones. For instance, Distance Education is one such field which has seen unprecedented change and tremendous development. From being an esoteric field to an all-encompassing education sector, this particular field is now becoming popular with many people and academicians. Here is all the information that you need to know about the Best Distance Education Universities in India and also the benefits associated with distance learning. Distance Education also known as Dis-

Changing face of Education : Distance Education tance Learning is basically a form of education which is imparted to a student individually and usually takes place in a setting which is not the traditional classroom or a school. Distance Learning is similar to the education which is given normally to a student, but in this case, the student is separated from the teacher by either time, or by distance and sometimes both. Sometimes, when distance education requires the teacher to take an examination, then there is some part in the education scheme which requires the teacher or an examiner to be present. In such a case, the distance education is known as the ‘blended’ or ‘hybrid’ education. Let’s go a little back in History? So, when was this Distance Learning started? It was way back in the year 1728 when the first distance learning program was started by a person in Boston called Caleb Phillips who promised to teach the students shirt hand writing by means of a mailed assignment. This was the very first instance of distance education being advertised in the world. Now, it has spread all over the world and everybody is now utilising this form of education to enhance their knowledge. What are the methods used to impart Distance Education? Distance Education and Learning has evolved over time. From using the snail mail to using video conferencing on the internet; nowadays distance education is turning over a new leaf to ensure that 30

students are getting the best of education in the most modern forms. There are four main categories which are used in Distance Learning. These categories include: 1.Computer : With the advent of the internet, Distance Learning has become all the easier by integrating computer and the online world. Students are now able to access a lot of information and data with the World Wide Web. Apart from this, the internet has enabled the teachers of Distance Education to make use of emails, video conferencing and audio-visual techniques to get their study material across. With simply a net connection, the students can also interact with their peers or their teachers on the internet forum. In short, computers have made Distance Education one of the easiest ways to impart education to students. 2. Video : Videos are another popular form of Distance Learning. This method is useful for those who do not have the luxury of a faster internet connection. On the internet, you can buffer the videos straight away and view your instructor teaching you implicitly. Videos were one of the first ways via which the modern distance education was started. The advantage with video learning is that the students are able to see as well as hear what their instructor is trying to explain. As a result, they are able to understand in a much more implicit way. Using speech and visual props, learning is faster and enjoyable. 3. Audio : Every student has a different way of

Distance Education and Learning has evolved over time. From using the snail mail to using video conferencing on the internet; nowadays distance education is turning over a new leaf to ensure that students are getting the best of education in the most modern forms. learning. For some it may be through visuals, while for others an aural medium might be better suited. Distance Learning thorough Audio medium takes in the form of telephonic conversations or in the form of audio conferencing. This is the best way of learning for those students who respond better to an audio input. The ease of use and cheap nature of this medium makes it a popular learning tool with many Distance Learning advocates. 4. Print : Print technology uses many different forms including those of text books, text and study guides and handbooks or hand-outs. This is one of the most popular ways in Distance Learning where all these materials are mailed out to the recipients. They can be used individually or can also be used

to augment other media of Distance Learning. Nowadays, the use of fax is also becoming popular where the students get their study material in the form of fax notes and can also correspond to their teacher via the same fax number. Print technology is more preferred than the other categories of Distance Learning because of the fact that it is easier to use and a much more portable medium. Despite the fact that Distance Learning is a different approach than the conventional way of learning and the fact that there is no presence of the teacher, no direct interaction between the teacher and the student, more and more people are now utilizing this form of education because of the freedom that it can give. Its advantages are many and people have been using this form of education for a long time now. Here are some of the common advantages that Distance Learning can give you: 1. Freedom and Flexibility : Though there are different media of imparting education to the student; a Distance Learning program is unique because it is tailor-made to suit the needs of each and every individual. While some students might find their forte in audio visual methods of learning, others might be comfortable with print media. A Distance Learning program is flexible and will give them the freedom to choose the kind of media which they are most comfortable with. It will give the students freedom to choose the kind of subjects

ENGINEERING EXAM

Path to a Successful Career E

ngineering-a job profile that every parent wants for their children, a career for which they pine. Engineering in India is a booming career. Every year India produces more than a lakh engineers from all part of the country. Not only is the profession prolific, but it is also one of the most demanded careers in the country’s job sector. There are hundreds of firms-either technological or software or construction oriented that demand skilled and qualified engineers. Which Kind of Engineering jobs are most preferred? Even though engineering jobs are aplenty, students mostly prefer to have a job provided by the government. The reasons are simple- there are more perks, more freedom and more stability in a government job. However with the rise in the number of private jobs, these providers too are leaving no stones unturned to attract the potential employees. Even private jobs these days provide a very lucrative career package to the aspiring engineers. What are the major colleges in Engineering? The Indian Institutes of Technology, the National Institutes of Technology are two of the Government colleges which are most preferred by students for their education. These engineering colleges are government colleges and they have guaranteed jobs in the government sector. They provide some of the best placements in the country. Not only that, the students from these colleges will have a degree which is recognized in foreign countries also. Most colleges abroad enroll students for higher studies in their country based on the colleges where the students did their engineering graduation from. Thus, these colleges are most preferred by students who want to get high-paying jobs later on. What are the exams needed to clear for entry in to these colleges? In India, there are three major exams for Engineering clearing which will ensure a berth for you in the coveted colleges. These are: All India Engineering Entrance Exams (AIEEE), IIT JEE, and State Level Entrance Exams which have different names in different states. AIEEE has scores which are all India and State level based. So, it you get a good All-India Rank, you would be able to get seats in the NITs (based on your rank) and any five of the IITs (again based on how high you could score). IITs have special exams which are considered one of the toughest in the world. The State Level exams are meant for entry into State’s Government colleges who educational proficiency can also be compared to that of the NITs and IITs. Since, these colleges are very few in their number as compared to the number of aspirants who appear for these exams every year, the competition to these exams is very hard. Students sometimes even take a year break to prepare for the tests. The country has many coaching centers which

have burgeoned over the years to support the needs of students who need entry to these colleges. The prevalence of the engineering coaching centers has risen alarmingly in the last decade. There is a coaching center in every nook and cranny of the city and country. However, one thing to keep in mind is the fact that these exams can only be cracked if you have taken coaching from reputed and experienced centers. The reason is that these centers have tried and tested methods of teaching. They have used them and have got successful results. As a matter of fact, most of the students who get the top most ranks are from these institutes. Taking coaching is necessary for these because here, self-study is not enough for a student. There are specific areas which need to be strengthened and this can only be achieved via the centers. Their experienced faculty will help the students clear the doubts and also boost their confidence. The formula followed by most coaching centers is intensive training and practice. They have collections of previous years’ question papers which would help them to analyze the trends and patterns and know what to expect in the next exam. Solving papers is always a good idea to predict questions for the next exam. Apart from the question papers and individual attention that these centers give a student; they also provide various handouts and study material in concise form. They give the students handouts with short formulae and tricks which can be easily browsed through before going for the exams. These notes are easy to skim and are conclusions which can be read through before the exams. Taking coaching at a specific center is always better because they will help you identify your problem areas and help solve the question papers in a much faster way. Intensive training and coaching is very necessary to crack these exams. Thus, if you want to get through these premier colleges, don’t forget to first book your seats at engineering coaching centers.
