That first language course in Bournemouth feels like yesterday. I never imagined that 50 years later EF would grow so much and help millions of people study abroad, learn a language, discover a new culture and make friends all over the world. I’m really honored to have taken part in EF’s story and in it’s mission of opening the world though education. BERTIL HULT, EF FOUNDER
EF spirit at the 2008 Beijing Olympics
CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT An EF adventure abroad in the 1970s
EF is selected as the Official Supplier of Language Training Services for the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, 2014 Sochi Olympic Games and 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Strolling down Carnaby Street is one of many favorite memories from my first time in London. It was so alive with the latest style, street art and underground bands. I remember my best friends and I trying on Doc Martens – those were all the rage back in the day. CARIN SIMONSON, SWEDEN
ENHANCING LANGUAGE EDUCATION EF produces language learning tapes for the BBC in 1981, partners with Apple on computer-aided language learning initiatives in 1995 and incorporates tablets into the classroom in 2011.
Students in EF Oxford
I came to EF London as a law graduate and my English became so much better. I was able to do an internship with an English law firm and even received a job offer. I’ll never forget how my EF program gave me English fluency and exciting career opportunities. ANTONIO LUCÀ, ITALY
I arrived in America knowing just a few simple words of English – and left almost fluent. My EF year abroad truly opened the world to me through the language skills I gained. A few years later, I’m using English regularly in my work for an international company.
SPANNING EVERY CORNER OF THE GLOBE EF opens its first school in 1978, nestled in the heart of Cambridge, England. Since then, EF schools have been opened in cities around the globe – from a campus in New York to a colonial villa in Costa Rica.

MORE THAN A LANGUAGE COURSE COMBINED LANGUAGE AND ACADEMIC STUDIES About the program On an EF Academic Year Abroad program you’ll spend six, nine or 11-months in a destination of your choice, improving your fluency in another langauge. You’ll enjoy a course that combines language learning with a focus on the academic subjects that matter to you. It’s the ideal way to experience a true cultural exchange as you discover the ins-and-out of a fascinating country abroad. You’ll learn in class alongside new friends from around the world, and then put your skills to the test as you live the local lifestyle – learning the language as it’s used in everyday life by the native speakers around you. Intensive language achievement Our exclusive teaching method, the EF Efekta™ Learning System, is structured to give you a fundamental understanding of your study language and enable you to use it in an academic or professional context. Our approach combines communication-based classroom learning with experienced teachers, specialized course books and interactive online lessons and activities. Career-focused studies Once you’ve gained a strong foundation of language skills, you’ll focus your studies on academic subjects in order to enhance your CV for university or career prospects. Our Special Interest Lessons (SPIN Lessons) and EF Advanced Diploma Programs allow you to personalize your course to meet your specific goals. EF’s University Preparation Abroad Program can equip you with the skills and credentials needed for guaranteed entrance to one of our partner institutions. Undertake an EF Internship or EF Volunteer Experience to gain practical communication experience necessary for the workplace. Become a citizen of the world An essential aspect of your program is discovering a different culture and country alongside students from up to 100 different nations. Explore your course destination with classmates on excursions or during group activities organized by your EF Activity Coordinator. You’ll gain confidence and speak with ease by practicing your language skills with native speakers while building an international network for life.

YOUR PATHWAY TO FLUENCY OUR INNOVATIVE METHOD FOR SOLID SUCCESS The EF Efekta™ Learning System Our teaching philosophy is based on a simple principle: the more personalized your course, the faster you learn. By building a study program around your unique goals and needs – and then putting it into practice with experienced teachers, interactive classtime, technology-assisted practice and real-life immersion – your progress is guaranteed. It’s a fact: you make faster progress when you’re absorbing the language in various ways, around the clock. This unique approach is what we call the EF Efekta™ Learning System. Teaching tools and more – designed by EF In addition to our methodology, EF is the only organization to develop its own course curricula, instructional methods, course books, digital learning materials and online applications. This ensures the content of your lessons is always fully integrated – in course materials, in class, and on your tablet. Personalized study options Adding a whole new dimension to your program, Special Interest Lessons (SPIN Lessons) allow you to build fluency while learning about academic subjects that interest you. By choosing the type of SPIN Lessons you prefer, you can personalize a program that helps you meet your own specific career and university goals. Together this collective of the world’s leading linguists, scientists and language experts are pioneering initiatives in language acquisition, teaching technology, and progress assessment. Learn more about our current initiatives and collaborating universities at www.ef.com/research. EF Research Unit at University of Cambridge One of our longest standing research initiatives is a Research Unit at the University of Cambridge Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics. Here we collaborate with leading scientists, linguists and scholars to fundamentally improve the way students learn English.
