UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION YEAR Gain the skills you need to progress directly to an undergraduate program in an Englishspeaking country.
What is an EF University Foundation Year? EF University Foundation Year is a six- or nine-month program of study that helps international students fulfill language and academic requirements for university entrance in an English-speaking country. This additional year of secondary school studies is required for students seeking higher education in the United Kingdom and highly recommended for students who wish to study in the United States, Canada, Australia and Singapore. Intended for high school graduates, this program bridges the gap between a student’s previous education, and what is expected of him or her at a university abroad. Successful graduates of the program are guaranteed admission to one of over 150 institutions that have partnered with EF.
Guaranteed admission to university In addition to your studies, you will have dedicated University Application Workshop classes with trained teachers designed to navigate the process of choosing and applying to a degree program. Furthermore, your University Pathways Manager will be on hand to give you one-toone assistance and advice, organize visits to Universities, and ensure you meet critical deadlines to maximize your chances of acceptance to the best possible university. We’ve successfully placed our students at the world’s top universities including Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Oxford University, University of Cambridge, the University of Melbourne, among many others.
Gain the skills to succeed Our EF University Foundation Year prepares you thoroughly for the challenges of higher education. You’ll learn essential study skills such as essay writing, critical thinking and independent research, as well as academic English. Depending on your choice of country and subject, EF offers a range of academic specialisms which enables you to access almost any bachelor degree program including Business, Engineering, Science, Information Technology, Law, Art, Media & Communications, Tourism, Sports Science and Architecture. Perfect your English EF University Foundation Year will give you the training in English you need to meet university enrollment requirements. To qualify for most bachelor’s degree programs, students generally need an IELTS score of at least 6.0 or TOEFL of 550 PBT/ 213 CBT/ 81 IBT or above. For students whose English is not yet strong enough, an additional program of study, the EF English Preparation Program, may be necessary to help establish a strong foundation of English fluency to meet enrollment requirements of any University Preparation Abroad program. For more information about EF’s English Preparation Program, see page 24.

SCHOOL SYSTEM OF NORTH AMERICA A degree from a North American university will give you a lifetime of rewards. We’ll help you select the best university, gearing you towards success in today’s global marketplace. Education in North America Schooling is mandatory for all children aged six to 16. The academic calendar runs from September to June. Elementary school typically runs from Grade 1 to Grade 6 (ages 6 to 12) and Grades 7 to 8 (ages 13-14) are spent at a junior high or middle school. Grades 9-12 (ages 15 to 18) are attended at a high school. Community colleges Community colleges provide a two year Associate’s degree program, often used as a springboard to a four-year bachelor’s degree at university. Community colleges have fewer admissions requirements than four-year institutions. Starting at a community college
for two years and then completing your bachelor’s degree at a university is a costeffective way for you to obtain a university degree in the US. Liberal Arts Colleges A liberal arts college is an institution which places emphasis primarily on undergraduate study in the liberal arts and sciences. Some also offer grad programs primarily in business administration, law, nursing and medicine. Liberal arts colleges can be private or public. Public Universities Public Universities, commonly referred as state universities, are founded and operated

by state government entities, receiving most of their funding from the state and/or federal government. Generally, these universities have statewide admission requirements and in general cost less than private universities. Private Universities Private universities receive no governmental financial support. They are funded through faculty research grants, tuition fees and alumni donations. The major reasons why students choose a private university are often due to its small class size, technological resources and research facilities.

SCHOOL SYSTEM OF AUSTRALIA Build valuable skills and credentials by studying in Australia, an increasingly popular study destination that welcomes students from around the globe. Primary and secondary school Education in Australia is compulsory for eleven years, but universitybound students study for thirteen. Australian students study from Kindergarten to Grade 10, with the option of an additional two years to gain entrance to university. The curriculum is nationalized across Australia with students learning core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Physical Education. At the end of Grade 10, students sit their School Certificate examinations. They can then choose to leave school and enter the workforce, attend a vocational school or continue studying for two more years to complete their Year 12 Certificate, required for university studies. Bachelor’s degrees Upon completion of their Grade 12 Certificate, students usually undertake a bachelor degree program for anywhere between three and six years. International students must demonstrate fluency in English and have completed the equivalent of the Year 12 Certificate from their own country to enter university. Alternatively, students can take an EF University Foundation Year and progress directly to a degree program at one of our partner universities. The entrance requirement for international students to commence an undergraduate degree is normally an English level of at least IELTS 6.0.

Postgraduate degrees Postgraduate programs in Australia for master’s degrees are offered in many disclipines as well as Doctorate degrees (PhD). Master’s programs generally last for one or two years. Doctorate programs usually require four to five years of additional advanced study. Candidates for an MBA degree will need at least two years of managerial level work experience in addition to a bachelor’s degree. The entrance requirement for international students is normally an English level of at least IELTS 6.5 as well as a completed bachelor’s degree. Alternatively, international students can attend EF’s Pre-Master’s or Pre-MBA Program and progress directly to one of our partner universities.
