UNITED KINGDOM

School system & partner institutions in the United Kingdom EF continues to build strong relationships with universities in the UK in order to offer our students guaranteed placement at some of the world’s most respected institutions.

School system of the United Kingdom The United Kingdom’s school system is considered the gold standard in education and has been influential in establishing educational benchmarks around the world. Education in the UK begins at age five where students begin learning subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science. In Grade 10 and Grade 11, students prepare for their General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE’s), an academic qualification awarded in up to 10 subjects. After taking GCSE’s, students can choose to enter the workforce, pursue training at a vocational college, or continue studying for two additional years for university entrance exams, called the Advanced Level General Certificate of Education, commonly referred to as “A-levels”.

Trusted partners in education We have helped students progress to university in the UK for more than 45 years by developing relationships with many prestigious universities. Our partner institutions place their trust in our high quality programs and give EF University Preparation Abroad students either guaranteed admission or preferred consideration. EF’s top partners in the United Kingdom include Durham University, Loughborough University, University of Exeter, the University of York and Hult International Business School. With EF University Preparation Abroad you’re not just limited to our partner institutions – we will also help you apply to any university of your choice, including many of the UK’s top universities.

University study Undergraduate students in the UK typically pursue a bachelor’s degree which specialises in one subject for three years. Entrance requirements for international students include English proficiency (with a minimum IELTS level 6.0) and an additional year of secondary school, known as a University Foundation Program, which is equivalent to Grade 13. A traditional master’s degree is in either the Arts (MA), Sciences (MSc) or in Business Administration (MBA), which typically lasts one year and require both exams and a thesis to graduate. Some specialized careers require the completion of a doctoral program or PhD, which may include four to five years of advanced study and research, plus a formal dissertation. For most of these programs, international students are required to have a recognized undergraduate degree and an English level of at least IELTS level 6.5. MBA programs normally require at least two years of work experience.

After their examinations, students choose to enter the workforce, attend a vocational school or continue studying for two more years to complete their Year 12 Certificate, required for university studies. Upon completion, students can undertake a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree program for three years, although some degrees take four or five years to complete. International students must demonstrate fluency in English and the equivalent of the Year 12 Certificate from their own country to enter university. Students can also take an EF University Foundation Program to progress directly to a degree program at one of our partner universities. The English requirement for an undergraduate degree is normally at least IELTS 6.0. Bachelor’s degrees Upon completion of their Year 12 Certificate, students in Australia usually undertake a bachelor’s program for three to six years. In addition to their Year 12 certificate equivalence, international students are required to demonstrate English fluency, which can be provided by an internationally recognized test result, such as an IELTS of 6.0 or higher. Successful completion of the EF University Foundation Program can waive the language requirement for entry to our many partner universities, as well as preparing students for the academic demands of university.

School system in Germany EF now offers a program to specifically prepare students for university study at top universities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. School system of Germany From the age of six or seven, children attend an elementary school called Grundschule before progressing to Hauptschule or Realschule. At grade 11-12, they start Gymanasium, which is designed to prepare pupils for university and finishes with the final examination Abitur, a qualification awarded in up to 10 subjects after grade 12, mostly year 13 and required to be admitted to German universities. Entrance requirements for international students include a German proficiency test (TestDaF) and – if the student’s high school diploma is not considered equivalent to the Abitur – an additional year of secondary school in Germany, known as Studienkolleg, which is the equivalent to grade 13 at Gymnasium. Progress to world-renowned universities Universities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are regarded as some of the best in the world, backed by hundreds of years of rich academic tradition. In addition, one of the best assets of universities in Germany is that they’re virtually free for all students, both domestic and international. Considering

this, acceptance to a German university can be a competitive business. It’s vital that students meet the language and study level requirements demanded by the university they’re applying to.
