THE HULT STUDENT
Oscar Lanzendorf Germany Undergraduate Class of 2016
Degree: Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Marketing Languages spoken: German, English, and Spanish Why Hult: Hult was actually the only school I applied for. I was looking for a university that would supply me with the knowledge I need to start my own company. I saw Hult and knew it was the right place. Why Marketing: Marketing has so many perspectives, you can take a really creative, forward-thinking approach. I’ve always enjoyed being creative, so for me marketing is a really nice way to build logic in behind your creativity. Favorite Professor: Daniel Rukare, who teaches entrepreneurship. He is a great teacher, mentor, and just a great person. What I really like about Daniel is that he doesn’t really do ‘no’ – he has a very positive approach. My start-up, VOYZ, was a course project I started in his class, and he was one of the people I asked for advice, and still do.
“Hult was actually the only school I applied for. I was looking for a university that would supply me with the knowledge I need to start my own company. I saw Hult and knew it was the right place.”
Extracurricular activities: I’m running my own start-up around VOYZ, which is a self-erasing audio messaging smartphone application I developed. I also really love making electronic music when I have time, as I enjoy house music and DJing. Favorite Hult moment: There have been so many. A really nice moment for me has been meeting a friend I feel very close to, who understands me on an entrepreneurial level too. To have met people that I feel I will be friends with for life has been really nice. To me, Hult is... the place that helped me to gain the knowledge and mindset to realize my vision.

“To me, Hult is an amazing international experience that can’t really be described—Hult is its own adjective. There are so many people and cultures. Literally every day you learn something new about somewhere different.” Carli Mae Cary U.S. Undergraduate Class of 2016 Degree: Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Marketing Languages spoken: English Why Hult: The chance to live in London—it has always been one of my dream cities. I grew up in the U.S. in a very small town, so this was my chance to experience life abroad. Life on campus: It is very close-knit here, so it’s impossible to walk around on campus and not see a friend or someone you know. Not just students but professors too. Our professors don’t just spout knowledge, they want to have a conversation with us. Why marketing: The thing that did it for me was my first class in marketing. The professor was super passionate, and I learned a lot, because in the U.S. you don’t study business in high school. It was really his passion that convinced me to go into marketing. Campuses studied at: I am going to Shanghai this summer, and though I didn’t rotate to Dubai, I have been there through a friend I met at Hult, which was really fun. I am attracted to Shanghai because of the culture. When you are young Asia is this mysterious place, so it is incredible to go and see the temples, and learn about Buddhism. To me, Hult is... an amazing international experience that can’t really be described— Hult is its own adjective. There are so many people and cultures. Literally every day you learn something new about somewhere different.

Christian Kongolo Kongolo Democratic Republic of Congo and Norway Undergraduate Class of 2017 Degree: Bachelor of Business Administration with majors in Management and Finance Languages spoken: French, Lingala, Norwegian, English, and some German Why Hult: I wanted to find a school that would enable me to learn about the world while I’m building knowledge in something that I like doing, which for me is business.
“Every day you come to school, you feel this open-mindedness on campus—this sense of acceptance and community and happiness. It’s just amazing. I look forward to coming to campus every single day.”
Life on campus: Every day you come to school, you feel this open-mindedness on campus—this sense of acceptance and community and happiness. It’s just amazing. I look forward to coming to campus every single day. The best thing about studying in London: Since I am a management and finance student, London is one of the best cities to be in— you have huge banks and companies, and you have access to all of this insight and knowledge about global finance. Internships: I was at Google last September for a three-day program on Google AdWords in Poland. I was selected for the program after sending in my CV. I’ve also worked with a company to improve its business plan by helping with market research. After implementing the new plan, the business improved its sales by 20%. Extracurricular Activities: I am the President of the Hult International Club. We want to use the opportunity we have to learn about each other’s culture on campus, and sometimes the best way to do that is by creating events where people can easily talk to each other and ask questions. I’m also part of the Hult Think Tank, and the African Society. Favorite Hult Moment: The 2015 Hult Winter Ball was incredible, as were the Hult Awards on the rooftop in Kensington High Street. The atmosphere was amazing.

“I wanted to be exposed to other cultures—how they are different and what makes them tick. I thought Hult would be a good opportunity because we can rotate to campuses around the world, and really, it’s like a mini United Nations.” Sarveen Chester Singapore Undergraduate Class of 2018 Degree: Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Entrepreneurship Languages spoken: English, Mandarin, Bahasa Melayu, Tamil, German, and French Why Hult: I wanted to be exposed to other cultures—how they are different and what makes them tick. I thought Hult would be a good opportunity because we can rotate to campuses around the world, and really, it’s like a mini United Nations. The best thing about studying in London: I’m an anglophile, so I love living in London. The art and museums, orchestras, and music make London the art capital of the world. And you’re so close to other countries in Europe too—just cross the Channel and you’re there. Why Entrepreneurship: Before coming to Hult, I had started two of my own business ventures. The first is an online fashion journal, and the second is an online art collective. I love being on the move and meeting new people, as I like the exciting pressure of being an entrepreneur. I also wanted to study the use of businesses to alleviate social issues and explore the NGO space. Extracurricular Activities: I am a Hult Global Ambassador and a delegate for Hult Model United Nations. Hult MUN has been incredibly successful at national and regional conferences this year, and we have just come back from the Harvard United Nations event. I am also steering the Hult Social Impact Club and the Hult Arts & Culture Club. Favorite Hult Moment: It might sound strange, but I like that period where we’re all cramming before exams. I like that pressure, and the pay-off. It’s nice seeing everyone come together, and feeling like you’ve emerged triumphant after all the effort. To me, Hult is... global. And possibly the best representation of different cultures and experiences coming together.

“Hult may be small in size but it’s so big in terms of value. The people you meet, the experience you have here, and the fact that you are not just meeting people from around the world, but making friends from around the world, is amazing.” Sharon Skillings Colombia and U.S. Undergraduate Class of 2016 Degree: Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Marketing Languages spoken: Spanish, English, and some French Campuses studied at: I did my first three years in London and my last year has been in San Francisco. Since I’ve spent longer in London I have a lot of strong friendships there, but in San Francisco there is great weather, the ocean, and a lot of different things I am enjoying right now. Favorite Course: My favorite course has been Trends and Innovation. I really enjoyed that course because we got to invent our own product and create apps for it, which was really fun. Digital Marketing was also a good course— we got to interview a real client and do advertising and investigations for them. Internships: I collaborated with the World Bee Project, which was a six-week internship helping to raise awareness about the fact bees are dying out. The company had only just been founded, so I helped them to create a website and a marketing strategy. Favorite Hult Moment: When I first arrived in London for Welcome Week everyone got on a boat, and we sailed on the Thames. I had never been to London before, and the first time I got to see the sights it was from the river, meeting lots of new people at the same time. I really enjoyed that experience. To me, Hult is... small in size, but it’s so big in terms of value. The people you meet, the experience you have here, and the fact that you are not just meeting people from around the world, but making friends from around the world, is amazing.

A curriculum for employability
Hult Business Challenge
High-value internships
Recent research conducted by Hult revealed that employers feel most university graduates enter the workforce without the critical leadership skills needed to succeed in business. We’ve specifically built our undergraduate curriculum with this insight in mind. Throughout your time at Hult, you will gain hands-on business experience with a focus on communication, cross-cultural competency, and teamwork.
The Hult Business Challenge is a Capstone Project in which you will be asked to work in teams, led by a faculty mentor, to tackle a critical social or business problem. Your team will then pitch a solution developed over months of collaboration to real business leaders. Building your presentation, communication, and critical thinking skills, the Hult Business Challenge prepares you for pitching in a real-world business environment.
Experience equals employability in competitive job markets, and internships give you the experience needed to stand out. You’ll work closely with our Career Development department to choose an internship aligned with your career aspirations. Along with the opportunity to add real value to an established business or start-up, you’ll also have the option to complete an in-depth research project if you do an internship as a Capstone Project.
Capstone challenges
Example strategic challenges
Hult Business Challenge Solve a strategic challenge set by the top management of a major company, for one of their markets, products, or services.
Unilever Create new e-commerce business models in emerging markets that simulaneously create more jobs for young people.
Entrepreneurship Challenge Devise a business plan for an innovative new product or service.
Example business Team Expeero is developing the first online extreme sports travel agency, allowing people to explore the most incredible places in the world in a totally new way.
UBS Recommend strategies to create long-term, sustaining, and mutually beneficial relationships with millennials.
“When I was a student it was all theory, theory, theory. But when you get out there in your first job, theory isn’t helpful. Having the practical experience makes a huge difference. When you’re a student at 18 or 19 and working with a real company, that is pretty incredible.” Marika Dimitriadou Greece Assistant Professor of Marketing
THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM Leena Nair speaks to students at the Hult Business Challenge finals at Unilever House in London.
“Unilever was delighted to be able to work with Hult students and faculty on the Hult Business Challenge in 2015, and get detailed proposals on how we could get involved in helping to solve the global youth unemployment crisis. Hult has a fantastic reputation as the world’s most international business school, and the cultural and practical experiences that these students bring to their projects brought a wealth of diversity and innovation to this challenge.” Leena Nair Senior Vice President, Leadership, Organization, and Development, Global Head of Diversity, Unilever

Through these courses, you will learn to see how these functional areas fit together, what their purpose is within practical business, and which ones are most suited to your interests and abilities.
Your major is a level of concentrated study within your preferred business field. Hult offers five majors: Management, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Accounting, and Finance. By the end of your second year, or once you’ve achieved 60 credits, you will choose your major. This choice largely dictates your course options during your final years of study, and often aligns closely with your career aspirations.
Your knowledge will be placed in the context of the increasingly complex global environment that businesses must operate in, with a focus on how to solve international issues and challenges. By exposing you to a wide range of topics, the Business Core curriculum will create a platform for you to decide your major and choose your elective courses. In your final two years, you’ll complete the Business Core by taking advanced classes, which integrate recurring themes in global business. These challenging courses will call upon you to think strategically about global business models, ethics, and practices, critically examining their usage.
Electives Along with your major, you will also take elective courses. Typically, these will be related to your area of specialization, but you may also choose to further your knowledge in other areas of business, or take additional General Education and Leadership Development courses. How you fill your elective courses is entirely up to you. Capstone Project In your final year, you’ll complete a Capstone Project for the last stage of your degree. This project will be relevant to your interests and major and will represent the culmination of your studies. You can complete your capstone in one of three ways: by taking part in the Hult Business Challenge, writing a thesis, or undertaking a Capstone Internship.

Inspiring faculty “Ideas are the foundation of success, but excellent execution is a requirement too, so good business training has to be ‘practical.’ The focus should be on real-world examples in business—things that have actually happened and do happen, and not on purely abstract concepts.”
Sheryle Bolton U.S. Adjunct Professor in Entrepreneurship A serial technology entrepreneur and experienced public company CEO and board director, Professor Bolton joined Hult in 2015 to share her knowledge of growth strategies, operations, and fundraising with students who want to manage growing businesses and learn about the latest trends and innovations in entrepreneurship. What are the benefits of studying your subject? A growing business is very different from a start-up, and understanding those differences can be critical for any leader or manager. I know this because I’ve personally led start-ups that became high-growth businesses. Why should learning be practical? Ideas are the foundation of success, but excellent execution is a requirement too, so good business training has to be ‘practical.’ The focus should be on real-world examples in business— things that have actually happened and do happen, and not on purely abstract concepts. What’s the atmosphere like in class? Hult students are engaged participants in the learning process, and bring their own experiences around the world to bear on the discussions, which makes for a very interesting, dynamic environment. Why is the international environment at Hult important? The 21st-century world is a global one. To understand how to succeed in business in this new world requires an international perspective, now and in the future.

Don Uy-Barreta Philippines and U.S. Global Discipline Lead and Professor of Economics San Francisco Professor of the Year, Hult Awards 2015 Professor Don Uy-Barreta has both undergraduate and graduate degrees in economics. He had a long career in investment management, which he has balanced with teaching economics and finance-related courses since 1999. He left investment management after 12 years to pursue a full-time career in higher education, because he believes education yields the highest return. Why should a student consider economics? If your career deals with consumption or production you are in a role using economics, and if people are rational or irrational, economics can help you understand their behavior. It can help you make the world a better place, as it gives you the chance to make things more efficient for yourself, in business, society, and for future generations. What is the atmosphere like at Hult? The energy is high in class, and the reason for that is that our students want to be here. They really want to learn this stuff. I love the diversity too—I have taught on many campuses, and Hult stands out for this. Why is diversity important?

It means students can bring the real world to class, and we can discuss how to fix problems through economics. It makes my job easier, because when I teach economic models I can use the students’ home countries to exemplify different systems. In a recent class I talked about shortages, and one of my students was from Venezuela. She was able to bring in pictures to show us what the business shortages looked like there, tying in with what we’d discussed in class. What career advice would you give a student? Our professors want you to make active judgments about what you learn and how to apply it. This is why you will often work with real businesses to implement your ideas in live case studies. Given a unique business problem by a real company, you will connect theories and models from class to their practice in the marketplace, analyzing which solution will work best for professionals on the ground. “The Hult Prize is about more than the solution to the problem, it’s about how the world has to work in the 21st century.” Former U.S. President Bill Clinton
How will you change the world with $1M in start-up capital? Each year, Hult and President Clinton select a major global problem affecting the world. Access to education, clean water, clean energy— these are just a few of the challenges competitors have tackled in previous years. Teams of five to six students then try and develop a business plan to help solve the challenge. Elimination rounds are hosted at each Hult campus, and finalists present their ideas at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York. The winning idea is announced by President Clinton himself, and the winning team receives one million dollars from the Hult family to help make their idea a reality. The Hult Prize was started by a Hult MBA graduate. Last year over 50,000 university students from over 130 countries competed, making the Hult Prize the world’s largest student movement for social good. A win-win for Hult students and for the world.
