Why study in Australia?
Australia – home to 6 of the top 100 universities in the world – enjoys a worldwide reputation for academic excellence and provides students with the perfect base to earn a globally recognized degree. Enjoy the traditional Aussie student lifestyle – firstly with EF and then at the university of your choice. Education system in Australia Education in Australia is compulsory for eleven years, but university-bound students study for thirteen. The curriculum is nationalized across Australia with students learning core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Physical Education. At the end of Year 12, students sit their Higher School Certificate examinations. For international students who have only completed a Year 11 equivalence in their home country, there are other pathway options into Australian universities available, including via TAFE (Technical and Further Education) and Foundation Programs at many Australian universities.
What is TAFE? TAFE is an education provider and is a good choice for international students who have not completed Year 11 and 12 in their country and wish to study for a diploma before applying for a Bachelor degree course at university. TAFE offers many courses in subjects such as hospitality, business, or technical skills.
University start dates
Bachelor degrees
Most university courses commence in February and July each year, although some universities follow a trimester schedule and offer one additional start date during the year. Your University Pathway Manager at EF Sydney will help you choose the right university based on your needs.
A Bachelor degree (or “undergraduate”) course in Australia can take three to five years. To obtain direct entry into a Bachelor degree program, international students need to prove that they have achieved a Year 12 school certificate equivalence in their country, and also demonstrate English fluency (IELTS of 6.0 or higher).
What is a Foundation Program in Australia? Foundation Programs at universities help international students who do not initially meet academic entry requirements to gain entry to a Bachelor degree course at Australian universities. After successful completion of the Foundation Program at a university, students will be offered direct progression into the Bachelor degree course at the university. All Foundation Programs require students to meet minimum standards for written and spoken English. Please contact your local EF office to find out if you will need to enroll in a Foundation Program at the university of your choice before you are eligible to enroll in a Bachelor degree course.
Master’s or MBA degrees Postgraduate programs are offered in many disciplines in Australia. Master’s degrees require a minimum three-year fulltime Bachelor’s degree and demonstrated fluency in English, such as an IELTS result of 6.5 or higher.
