WHAT ARE YOUR LIFE CHOICES? THAT IS MY DREAM. Hello, my name is Carl Ferguson. I am from London. I am thirty-six years old. I am married with no kids. I am a sales representative in a telecom company. I am a very determined and organized person. I like books and sports cars. I also love to ride horses. I travel a lot during the week, but on the weekends I stay home with my wife, Sally. My dream? I want to open a small hotel in North Scotland—near the mountains, very selective, with high quality service

WHAT ARE YOUR LIFE CHOICES? LIFE CHANGES In 2010, when I finished my M.B.A. in Denver, I quickly got a job at the New York Stock Exchange. I thought that was my chance: Country boy makes his way to the big city. Three years later, my stress level was really high. I was fifteen pounds fatter, I started to smoke and drink. My life was really worse. Was that my dream? No. I quit the job most people dream of. Now, I have my own business in my hometown, Manitou Springs. I sell mineral spring water with medicinal properties. Next summer, I am going to offer tours to spring water well parks. Maybe, next year, I’ll open a store in Denver. I don’t smoke. I don’t drink. I practice sports regularly. I strong believe our choices can make us better persons.

ARE YOU A RISK TAKER? I’m sorry to tell you that stability is a lie. The great news is that life without stability is even better. In 2014, I was fired from UTC Enterprise because I took too many risks. My wife left me. At first, I thought that was the end for me. Since then, I’ve worked on a project on the Web to join people to talk about taking risks in life. That was www.riskandlive.com. Everybody called me crazy. I’ll be working on the script with some top Hollywood screenwriters! Isn’t it great? Before I got fired, I had thought that being a director in a world-famous company was the best thing in life. In other words, I actually didn’t know a thing about life. Life is about taking calculated risks. I hope that in the future people will have understood that risks are the air we breathe!

FINDING
the Necessary Change A. Our choices may request changes in our lives. Sometimes you know the result you want to achieve, but you still have to think about how you can achieve it. Take a look at the following equations and select one of them. You need to make just a change in the arithmetic operation (by changing one sign) to make it right. In groups, solve the equation and mark which skills were necessary to perform the task.
Imagem se tornará uma ilustração
30
ARE ANY CHANGES NECESSARY?
Note: You cannot change the Equal sign (=) and you have two minutes to find the necessary change.
Possible Equations: (8 / 4) X 3 + 5 = 30
(20 / 2) X 2 X 3 = 15
(9 – 1) X 2 / 6 = 3
(100 – 50) / 3 X 2 = 100
B. Which skills did you use? Answers will vary. ( ( ( ( ( ( ( (

SITUATION 2 There are three bedrooms in my house, one is in very good condition, but the other two need serious refurbishing. I don’t need all of them…I could turn one into an office and work from home. I used to be a home office employee…Now I work from home sometimes, but I don’t have a comfortable place to work at…To make things worse, I spend two hours commuting. But there are some problems…for instance, who would take care of the refurbishing? I would have to hire someone… How much would it cost? John, 33, system analyst, single. 105

Target Audience
– a Concept T
echnically speaking, the target audience is the group of people to whom your message is addressed. Even when we were kids, we had to deal with this concept when talking to our parents, teachers, and classmates. There are some important issues that we often take into consideration—usually subconsciously—to shape our message to our target audience. Here are some of them:
• • • • • •
Who are they? What is their most pressing issue, fear, or desire? Whom do they trust? Where do they get their information from? What benefit will they get from your message? What sets off their bullshit detector?
a) Think of your professional field. How is your target audience? Can you answer the questions about your target audience?
b) Now, watch the Personal and Professional Development video and check what it says about the importance of knowing your target audience.

DO YOUR MESSAGES REACH YOUR AUDIENCE? INTERMEDIATE 1
EXTRACT We are use to thinking that life is complicated. But my question is, who said that? I used to thinking that some evil force made things difficult. Maybe you feel the same way. But you might think twice before blaming someone for what is your responsibility. You couldn’t change how things are; however, you may to change how you see things. On short, you will not play the victim. Be the protagonist of your own life! Make yourself this favor: do plans and decisions and change your life!

INTERMEDIATE 2
EXTRACT I would kill for live in a house by the beach. I would better have an imported car. It’s much best not to work on Saturdays…We spend half our day talking about what we don’t have. We don’t focus in what we do have. I should like to kick off our debate by asking you to think this over. Besides there are positive things in our lives, we usually think onto the negative ones. We have better change this attitude, because if we don’t, our lives must only get worse and worse.

EXTRACT Most people not only spend more than they earn as also lend money to spend more. That’s more common than you think. Why? If you asked me, I will say that people have difficulty facing reality. We ought understand that limits exist and they need to be respected. Understand our limitations is an intrinsic part of being successful. One of the commandments of becoming a millionaire (if that is your plan) is: you might never spend more than you earn. If you do, you will neither lose all you have or spend your life asking for bank loans. If I am you, I wouldn’t choose none of these options.
List the topics you corrected in the speech.
ADVANCED 1
EXTRACT Some studies say that if you not become a millionaire before you turn thirty, you wouldn’t stand a chance. That’s a lie. Stop wasting money in what doesn’t make more money. I had been providing assistance to new entrepreneurs for the past ten years, and if there is a lesson I am learning, is that it’s never too late. So, when friends speak that, say them

to mind their own business. You should go for your dreams. If I didn’t quit my job at the age of forty-five and opened a small online business with my wife, I wouldn’t have changed my life. Have you yet had an idea that make you extremely excited and energetic? That’s the very beginning. Go for it; it’ll pay out. Whatever you do, do it with passion.
DO YOUR MESSAGES REACH YOUR AUDIENCE? List the topics you corrected in the speech.
ADVANCED 2
EXTRACT I usually ask someone who is about to open a business if are they putting all their apples in one basket. If they are, I tell them not to do it. If you don’t have a plan B or C, you may find it difficult to keep your arms above water. Besides that, you must have a clear picture of with who
you are making business. Business people have different beliefs and ideas, especially if they are from different cultures. Once I signed a contract with a man whom biggest fear was to be took in. I needed to constantly reassure him that nothing was be done over the table.

SERVICES
LIFE COACH OFFERING Last month, I worked with women who have a history of domestic violence. I was providing legal-life coaching services for an unemployed woman who was constantly humiliated and physically abused by her husband. Rather than staying silent and ashamed, she joined my coaching program and took charge of the 186
situation. She got a job, changed the locks, filed for divorce, and pressed charges against him. My name is Cristina Kimberley, and although I can’t guarantee that results will come quickly, I assure you that I can empower you in your relationships. The most rewarding thing about my job is that it provides a life-changing experience!
