ARCHITECTURE MANIFESTO Architecture is a pluralistic reflection. It is attuned to history and emotions. It manifests with the practice of some components that together must function as mediators between the human and the universe. These components are history, art, time, order, place and memory.

History

Architecture is not a pure result of imagination. Pure originality does not exist, it comes from the study of whatever exists or existed. Everything has a grounded precedent.

Art

The composition, aesthetics, rhythm, proportion and geometry, provoke the senses, all of them together, form the beauty of a project.

Time

Architecture is timeless, it does not respond to a single moment. It always has a background and contributes to his successors.

Order

Guides, invites, causes transits and delays through solids and voids that, as a whole system, form paths.

Place

It does not take away from the world what belongs to itself by nature. Architecture must respect and understand the place, adapt to the needs of its projection site and contribute to what already exists.

Memory

The craft goes beyond the physical. Architecture evokes memories and feelings to who lives and who surrounds it.

The projection and materialization of these components is what results in a different identity to each space and its relationship with the inhabitant, where its purest value is in the intangible.

THE PUREST VALUE OF SPACE IS IN THE INTANGIBLE.

M AGNOLIA HOUSE MONTERREY, NUEVO LEÓN 2015 HOUSING

Typology: Housing Program: Magnolia House is a residency planned for a family of 5 members. The social areas and its relation with the environment is the most important subject. Concept: A volume in “L shape divided by a void inside the house, in which the public spaces can be understood as one. Location: Privada Magnolias, Monterrey N.L

18

N

19 0

10

T H E P U B L I C S PAC E The public space of the house works as a connection point between the garden and the interior of the project. The interior space must be a flexible space, where the user can seize it in different ways according to their need, in the same way, the exterior space does not intend to have a fixed objective, it is a garden where the vegetation takes over the land.

N

MATA M OROS CA M PUS MONTERREY, NUEVO LEÓN 2016 EDUCATION

Typology: Educational Building Program: Campus Mariano Matamoros is a highschool with private classrooms and public exposition spaces. The Campus, as well, counts with a public auditorium and football field. Objective: Use our Campus as a sidewalk connection between 2 important avenues. Concept: Three lineal volumes that form public spaces between them, the volumes in which similar activities take place are connected through bridges forming central patios. Context: Located in Monterrey Downtown, the project is highly busy by cars and pedestrians during most part of the day.

26

27

T H E T I M E L E S S Q UA L I T Y O F S PAC E Given that the building is not the protagonist of the project, but its public places, it must seek to go unnoticed, respond to its context and must be sure its essence is the same over time. For this same reason, apparent materials, light sequences, shadows, and vegetation are used throughout the project.

N

RÍO 70 INTE RVE NTION MONTERREY, NUEVO LEÓN 2017 RESTORATION / MIXED-USE

Typology: Restoration / Mixed-Use Program: The intervention to the Rio 70 cinema seeks to use the current parking lot for the development of the project, send the current parking lot underground and use the “dead” spaces to build an office and apartment building, a commercial plaza next to the building and a space for a market . Objective: Respect the existing structure of the Rio 70 since it is an iconic building in Monterrey and contribute to the previous project with a new use to begin recovering the city center. Location: Downtown Monterrey, Nuevo León

34

Concept: The intervention consists of 3 new elements in the field without touching the existing project as a tribute, forming a public square around the project. Context: The Rio 70 is an icon of the city of Monterrey, it was inaugurated at the end of the 60s. It is located in a strategic point of the city center, since this land is right at the beginning of Ocampo Street, a street that lately begun to densify.

T H E WINE INSTITUTE PARRAS DE LA FUENTE, COHAHUILA 2018 RESTORATION / MIXED-USE

Typology: Restoration / Mixed-Use Program: The Mexican Wine Institute is a Mixed-Use tourism center, it is focused on the culinary art, local viticulture, culture, and craft trade in a public space, also, the Wine Institute has a boutique hotel in a private area. Objective: Return the tourism to Parras, which, as the wine culture has developed, has driven the visitors and tourists to the outskirts of the city as the principal attractive, forgetting the importance of the city center. Concept: The intervention consists of 3 independent pavillions in different ground levels forming a clositer. These 3 pavillions are placed on site so a 100% of the existing trees are kept. Each of them (pavillions) are strategically located to be private one from each other. Location: Parras de la Fuente, Coahuila, Mexico.

THE PREEXISTENCE The old house of the Marques de Aguayo family, after suffering a fire, the only thing that was preserved was its exterior structure, just a few bearing walls that have been abandoned for years.

Reconstructing a building is denying its history and events. To intervene it, leaving only the preserved walls without replicating their structure, is to respect the preexistence of the place, to pay homage to what has happened over the years.

THE MARKET In the main square, in front of the project’s land, every weekend for many years some vendors of Parras de la Fuente put blankets on the floor and use the square as a street market, however, they have not been provided a space in which they can formalize their businesses.

The proposal for the Wine Institute’s market is to create a public space to be provided to the sellers, making a lowered platform 90 cm under the floor level and raising low walls which would stand 1.2 m from the ground so that the activities in the market could be carried out without taking the essence of serenity from the garden.

U CAL LI HOSUING CONTE ST 5 DAYS EXCERCISE 2018 TEAM: JOSÉ BUZO / KATIA VALENZUELA / MELISSA PERCHES

Typology: Collective Housing The Contest: A complex of 95 to 130 townhouses, with two parking lots and with 70 to 100 m2 living spaces, common amenity areas in a 16,390 m2 piece of land. (Real project) Our Proposal: The complex is designed to have a total of 155 apartments from 35 to 100 sqm, public spaces, and amenities. Concept: The idea is based on the need to change the typology of housing proposed by the contest. Due to the excessive growth of the city towards the periphery, the proposal is to densify more in less space, retake the concept of neighborhoods in the city, where the pedestrian is the protagonist and the car is in remote spaces. A continuous volume with central courtyards and different scales according to its own needs, where vegetation and common areas are the protagonists of the project.

MA DE RO M ORTUA RY MONTERREY, NUEVO LEÓN 2019 MIXED-USE

Typology: Mixed-Use Program: Madero Mortuary is planned to be a mortuary in the underground level, with offices and apartments being in the tower above ground, the challenge is to have those antagonistic programs without mixing them. Objective: Recently , downtown Monterrey has begun to densify vertically, however, some of the main avenues have not been intervened to be used in this way. The “Cátedra Blanca” CEMEX workshop developed a Master Plan to recover the Madero Avenue and use it as a mixed-use avenue, offices, restaurants, sports spaces, shops, car agencies and even a funeral home. Concept: An L-shaped project that separates the public from the private area, where, by means of slopes and gardens, the programs change without interrupting each other. Location: Downtown Monterrey / Madero Avenue corner with I. López Rayón.

68

M A D E R O AV E N U E R E G E N E R AT I O N

Context: Sixty years ago, in Madero Avenue, there was a road highly used by pedestrians, however, over time this road was reduced to an unusable ridge to get more lanes. In the “Cátedra Blanca” workshop a master plan was developed to reuse this road. Under the circumstances of this scenario, 22 projects were designed on 20x40m land of different uses in addition to apartments. In the case for this project, a mortuary.

69

DESIGN PROCESS

70

The geometry that is given to the project is because it is located in a corner, so that the building encloses a garden in a private space. The front of the building respects the height of 12 meters established by the master plan and the tower is sought to be made as thin as possible for the building not to feel heavy.

THE THREE SCALES

1. The scale of the city. The historical potential of a building is defined by the role it will take in its context. On this scale, the project follows its context with a basing provided to the public space and respects the heights of the nearby buildings, however, a tower is made that stands out from the others as an urban landmark.

2. The public scale. The space provided to the city and the interior / exterior spaces in the project, serve as guides towards the regeneration of Madero Avenue, from this scale you can understand what is public and private in the project. 74

Scale models form an important part within the design process and project delivery, in them, the architectural process and exploration is evidenced, moving towards a final model where the structure, space, lights, and shadows are captured. On top of shelves, this scale models represent a tribute to the creative process of the architect.
