This year I want to be proud of all work that I produce and want it to be me in every way. I am ambitious and hope that after experimenting and discovering new techniques I will discover a personal way of working and my own style. Hopefully I will have a good idea of what sort of job I want to get after university. Although I know it will be stressful when coping with the workload, I am excited for a fast and crazy time! I think I’m a positive person and really do want to make the most of this final hurdle.
Surprisingly my favourite animal is also a wild cat the leopard which has lead me to being called a “leopard princess”
Tiger and I were both born in December 25 days apart. “Tiger” his nickname was given in honour of his father’s friend. Surprisingly my favourite animal is also a wild cat- the leopard which has lead me to being called a “leopard printcess” or a “leopard diva.” Although Tiger and I have a few similarities we differ in our competitiveness. Tiger has played golf since the age of 2 and competed all of his life; he strives to win. I, on the other hand am a firm believer in fate and that if I strive to do the best that I can without having to feel the need to compete with others then that is cool with me.
PERSONA
George Orwell was a Political writer and journalist, English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic. Which I can’t say I have any interests in. He was recognized for his Anti-fascism perspectives. This is something I can relate too although its not a strong passion of mine I do tend to break out of the norm, this could relate to the fact I am a women in the tattoo industry and do have tattoos which can be seen as anti-fascism. Orwell appreciated English beer, taken regularly and moderately, despised drinkers of lager. However I drink a lot or larger so I suppose we would be going to the pub together. One this I can relate to is that Orwell was very superstitious. He changes his name from Eric Arthur Blair, as he believed that curses were made one peoples names so he changes his. He had a small blue circle tattooed on his knuckles to ward off bad luck. I have tattoos, one being a dream catcher to warn of bad dreams; I never split a lamp post and hate it when people put new shoes on a table.

25:06:1903 - BRITISH - GEORGE ORWELL
His dress sense was unpredictable and usually casual. I am likewise; I wear a lot of black unintentionally. I do have some color in my wardrobe but I tend to wear black and white. However my tattoos are all full color and my hair is usually a bright color. I am a very hands on person. I love to make things and get creative with different materials. Orwell also loved working with his hands, even though at times he wasn’t very good at it. He really loved pranks. Another thing that he did is by sending birthday present such as dead rat. Although I wouldn’t go that far I love fooling people and winding people up.
Elvis Presley is commonly known for his signing career and good lucks. Nothing similar to me yet but as I peel back the layers of this Elvis orange I discover more about him and his charming and enriched personality and start connecting the dots between Elvis’ mind and my own. Not only do we share a massive love for beef burgers but we also both have brunette hair, and both were relatively tall (over 6 feet).
Persona
by Edward Shrewsbury To compare myself to late and great Elvis Presley, I first must define the charactoristics of my own personality and lifestyle so I can then analysis specific qualitys that correspond with the rested superstar. A common self description method is to describe oneself in three words, it sounds relatively easy but is quite a challenge, especially when your own perseption of yourself would vary to another persons perseption. Confident, Charming, and Bold (Bold referring to a physical presents as I am quite tall) would be the three words I would describe myself. Now time to research into the charactoristics of the real Elvis Presley but not neccessarily the Elvis Presley that was persived by the public.
Elvis never wrote any of his own songs, which I too, never have written a song that I have sung. Elvis had a pet chimp, I have a dog but less of the specifics, we are both a lover of animals. In conclusion, Edvis Shrewsley is an icon for bold personalities, but unfortunately, the similarities end there.
Flip... I am Josh Beetham, a graphic design student currently living in Manchester. I want to absorb, explore and experiment with the world around me, drawing inspiration from everywhere. I want to fulfill my creative potential and become the best designer I can be. I find myself trying to push the boundaries of what design, continually exploring new techniques and processes.
An Alternative Persona...
Ingrid Bergman
Ingrid Bergman was a Swedish actress, she is best remembered for her roles as Ilsa Lund in Casablancas (1942) and and Alicia Huberman in the Alfred Hitchcok thriller Notorius (1946). She is known for being conscientious and orderly, which I see some of in myself, I feel I am quite meticulous in my design work and find myself paying attention to small details. Ingrid is known for not being worried about what people thought about her, she wasn’t afraid to take risks and defy convention. A famous quote from her is “Be yourself, the world worships the original”. This is a trait I try to replicate within myself, I aim to produce work that isn’t characterised by a certain style or process but inspired by the brief in front of me.

“Be yourself. The world worships the original”
Persona by Jack Deane What I have always loved about Da Vinci’s work is the way in which he balances science and religion and balances evenly. In which he creates work that not only looks to the future but draws reference from the past and spiritual world. This is something that I have always tried to apply to my work, by looking at not only christianity as a religion as a whole but also through eastern religions and other lesser known religions.
Da Vinci wanted to push the world no matter what people think he was always open to exploring different and obscure ideas, something that I think we have a faint similarity on. Whereas Da Vinci would have a idea and openly discuss his idea, and often enough others would judge he was fearless in wanting to try things out and explore and push boundries and had a attidue of if it failed so what.
Where I think where similair is that I too have strange ideas and concept narratives, but are more likely to keep them to myself for fear of being judged which is someting that, I am trying to work on and kind of say fuck it, I will do what I want and if it doesn’t work it does not and if it does well thats good on to the next thing.
In my work, I have always wanted to master a certain style of design and looked in envy as some people, have a easy recognisable style, however it has always scared me from being pigeon holed in to one style and not being able to explore ever and all possible styles. Someting I felt that Da Vinci thought as well even though he was a master painter in renaissance art and religious art, he never just seeked out to paint he however explored every possible avenue.
The painter who draws merely by practice and by eye, without any reason, is like a mirror which copies every thing placed in front of it without being conscious of their existence.

“Why do I design the way I do?”
by Jack Deane
t was a clear black night in California; all was still. A rustling sound came from a nearby bush. Tiger stood alert like a wild fox; he was curious. Golf club in one hand and rum in the other he stumbled over to where the noise could be heard. Closing his left eye to keep in focus and peering over the plants the noise was heard again. “RAAAAAA!” George Orwell screamed jumping out of the bushes. “Why do you always do that!!!” Slurred Tiger with a look of horror in his face. “You know I love a good prank he said smugly”, lighting up a cigarette and taking a deep drag. Da Vinci, smacked the cigarette out of George’s hand in anger, as he was making one of his wacky inventions again using flammable gases. If the gas leaked and set a light the whole of California would be burned to the ground and Da Vinci would be responsible for yet another disaster like that in Atlantis.
“Oi you fucking dickheads” a loud and mumbling deep south accent shouted from the darkness. Tiger, George and Da Vinci turned around in a flash to see who was making obnoxious remarks; it was no other than Elvis Presley pissed as a fart. Stumbling over to the trio Presley swung his almost empty Jack Daniels whisky bottle round Da Vinci’s face which consequently knocked him out in an instance. As Da Vinci’s body hit the floor the boys stood in an awkward shocked silence trying to anticipate what the fuck Elvis was going to do next. Barely standing up, he managed to unleash his party sausage and started to urinate on Tiger Woods. Next, Ingrid Bergman came out of the house to see what all the fuss was about, after she split up the pair, Elvis then turned on her, just as he was about to take a swing at Ingrid with his whisky bottle, Da Vinci lifted himself off the floor, reached under his coat for his gun and shot Elvis in the chest. The story continues in LIMBO issue two...
It’s all about the brand
by Jess Richmond-tudor I am going to be investigating the idea that apple’s brand is the key to their success and not nessisarly because of their products. How apple have gained such loyal customers throug their product attatchments through their emotional advertising skills.
Does graphic design follow fashion trends?
by Edward Shrewsbury I am going to be investigating the concept of a relationship between graphic design and fashion industry trends. If a relationship does exist, does one industry influence another? If so how? and what trends/cultures are examples of this theory?
Transmedia theory in Graphic design by Jack Deane
I wanting to look at the idea of transmedia theory/ storytelling within my CP3 essay. Through looking at the future of cummunication. Transmedia theory/story telling is the technique of telling a story across multiple platforms and formats using digital technology. As it was the basis of one of my media culture lectures, it has been something that has interested me and something I have wanted to apply within my work. I also want to look at designing work and looking at work that uses different media platforms and ones that are not openly accessible to students and see at what could be the future of graphic design. I am also interested in the story telling narrative aspect to the theory in which the viewer cannot gain all of the information from one media platfrom so is unconventional to current franchising and engages the audience more. Transmdeia theory has mainly been applied to narrative that attract a more science fiction audience, as it is something that the audience engages with more actively however I feel that it could be applied to various narrative in graphic design. It was also the loose basis of my black holes project in with I wanted to make the audience search, and be more active in wanting to find the information out for themselves. This also goes into my lose interest into how cults/religions used to use signs and symbols to keep themselves hidden and how secret socities create there own sets of symbols to organise meet ups/show safe houses.
Graphic Design & Fashion Communication by Gabriella Wilkins
For my CP3 essay I wanted to research into how graphic design within fashion magazines helps to communicate a message with the reader. Initially looking into the layouts, type and design of the pages within the magazine and then moving onto how this has evolved over the years. I would compare the design of fashion magazines now to the design years ago and what has changed. I also thought it could be interesting to look at the comparison of fashion magazines with non-fashion magazines and how the design is different.
Exploring the role of graphic design within the film industry and how it can be used to establish a sense of time and place. by Josh Beetham
I want to further explore the way in which graphic design can help to create an atmosphere for the actors to work in. For example in 2001: A Space Odyssey, Kubrick was fascinated with typography, he saw the potential of graphic design and it’s way of providing an aesthetic to give credibility to the futuristic context of the film. Wes Anderson draws influence from Eastern Europe in the 1930’s to help create the visual imagery of the state of Zubrowka.
