ART EXHIBITS During the arts festival, Fareham will be playing host to some pretty great artists. This is your chance to see their work outside of the gallery and in the type of venues you visit every day! The majority of our art exhibitions are open every day (though some may close on Sunday) with other art related activities taking place throughout the week, including a special treat where members of the local community get to work with a TATE MODERN exhibited artist, all in the name of “democracy”.

I work with a variety of clays from apoxy (generally used in taxidermy), through a range of polymers, up to traditional earth clays. I create feminist jewellery, inspired by the homogenising of idealised women. Due to my pure enjoyment of the subjects I also love creating magical creatures and animals. Chris May Chris May’s paintings are based predominantly upon the human form with occasional forays into landscape. The subject matter tends to be dark in tone & deals with issues of blindness and self absorption which leads towards an inevitable withdrawal from the world. The works are largely oil based whose subdued colour hopefully reflect the more quiet reflective themes of an internal/external struggle.

Working from home on a converted Victorian mangle Jill uses a combination of printing techniques and collage. Using the Akua Kolor range of water-based inks her designs not only reflect nature, but also consider the environment. Jill loves printmaking and uses it not just as a means of reproduction, but also as an original experimental medium. She will often pull only one print, which she then enhances with drawing, painting and collage. As a passionate gardener her work often features pollinator-friendly plants, and the birds that inhabit the hawthorn hedgerow at the end of the garden, plus a range of other topics such as nature reserves and wild flower meadows. Latest works reference the importance of pollinators to the production of food on our tables. Your can also see Jill’s work at Titchfield Haven.

A quiet town it may be but it is home to one of the most exciting new songwriters with a knack for hard hitting, brutally honest lyrics, an ear for soaring melody and a voice that could bring a tear to the eye of even the most stone hearted souls “Fantastic musicians, radio friendly songs” Bethyn Elfyn, Radio 1 The Paper Trains are a modern three-piece string band, with a distinctive repertoire of self-Americana tracks. Their music combines harmony-enriched vocals, strident guitar laced with incisive licks, demon banjo picking and sure-footed upright bass lines. This unique sound has seen The Paper Trains play such prestigious venues as the legendary Bluebird Café in Nashville and the Cavern Club in Liverpool, as well as many well-known UK and international festivals.
