Hyde Park Barracks

The site is situated at the intersection of the commercial precinct and the domain. It is flanked by significant buildings of Sydney’s colonial history such as the Sydney Eye Hospital, Hyde Park Barracks and The Mint. The proposal is hence inextricably grounded in Sydney’s colonial provenance, paying homage to historically significant social groups.

General Notes 1. This drawing shall be read in conjunction with all other mechanical, architectural, structural, electrical, hydraulic and other drawings, design reports, specifications and associated design documents with due allowance for the design status. Refer to Architectural reflected ceiling plans for acoustic ceiling panel locations and design intent. 2. This drawing is not for construction. 3. This drawing provides information intended to identify the scope, design intent and general installation requirements of the works. The Contractor shall be responsible for the final coordination, shall undertake site measurements and / or surveys as required and set out all works to suit actual on-site conditions. 4. Configurations, arrangements and connection details shown are generic in nature and show a level of detail consistent with Detailed Design. Activities such as coordination and costing should take this into consideration. 5. The Contractor shall ensure that structural loadings are within the designated allowance and provide all steelwork not shown on the structural drawings as well as brackets, supports, etc as required. 6. Services penetrations through external walls to be weather sealed. Through internal and external walls to be acoustically stopped. All penetrations shall be fire rated with approved materials to the approval of structural engineer and authorities. 7. Through fire rated compartments shall be fire stopped to achieve a fire rating equivalent to the fire compartment and allow for movement, construction tolerances and thermal expansion as necessary. 8. All works shall be undertaken as per Macquarie University Design Standards. 9. All electrical systems/devices are new unless noted otherwise. 10. Drawing to be printed in colour. 11. The contractor shall produce dimensioned multidisciplinary services layout drawings and sections demonstrating coordination between work shown and specified in other disciplines' drawings and documents. These drawings shall be in addition to and at an enhanced level of the design drawings specified in the preliminaries. 12. Supports and fixings are to be designed in accordance with AS1770 Structural Design Actions Part 4: Earthquake Actions in Australia. 13. Final services coordination within Moot Court ceiling and associated Moot Court structure subject to design finalisation by contractor. The services shown are to be incorporated into the final structure and architecture based on the design intent indicated on the drawings. 14. Refer to the Fire Services Specification for materials and workmanship. 15. Refer to Fire Engineering Brief / Report for detail and requirements to be incorporated in the Fire Services documentation. 16. Check all dimensions on site and coordinate with other trades prior to purchase of equipment or installation of fire services. No claims will be considered regarding items which cannot be installed due to error resulting from failure to check dimensions or coordinate with other trades on site. 17. Confirm location, sizes and depths of structural beams, ceiling void, all other services and ceiling height prior to installation. Determine exact sizes and locations of structural penetrations on site in accordance with the structural requirements. Obtain approval from structural engineer prior to drilling any core holes and penetraing structure.

Cabling to light fixtures in areas with exposed CLT beams and no suspended ceiling to reticulate in conduit. Final finish to be confirmed by architect (typical for all floors)

The installation of a new floatng ‘veil’ is proposed to the World Square Central Plaza. The structure is to become an iconic architectural and artistic feature, whilst also providing protection from falling overhead objects from apartments.

The analysis of daylight access considered how the ‘veil’ is expected to impact daylight access by comparing existing and proposed conditions. The above image shows an excerpt of the broader daylight calculation study in which findings discover when assuming an overcast sky, approximatley a 25% reduction in lux levels under the areas beneath the proposed ‘veil’.

Electrical lighting was also developed for this project in which the use of spotlights, catenary lighting and downlights to corridors have been calculated and specified in accordance to the relevant lighting standards for public activity spaces.

Luminance readings of the existing site had been done to better understand the light levels of the space and to undertake research into Arup’s “Safety at night” initiative.

Software used: Python

The external private domain consists of a glass ‘ribbon’ facade with internal lighting in tuneable white light along the building perimeter to highlight the architectural geometry and palette. The image above shows a lighting render to illustrate lighting effects, types and overal appearance.

Software used: Photoshop

Obtrusive light study has been done to understand adverse lighting effects of the scheme onto surrounding buildings. The areas of calculation includes luminance on vertical plane, luminous intensity, threshold increment and up-ward light spill.
