Edwind Tan
About I’m a designer based in Singapore with a deep love for old school consumer electronics. When i was young I would dismantle my parent’s Walkman and TV remote controllers just so I could see how the product worked. This curiosity eventually led me to where I am today. I graduated Singapore Polytechnic with a Diploma in Experience and Product Design. Immediately after graduating, I started working as a Junior Industrial Designer in a local design consultancy. The projects the company worked on ranges from consumer electronics to everyday products. Working there provided me with various opportunities to work with oversea companies and even local start-ups, gaining invaluable experience in the process.

NAVI
navigation accessory NAVI is an offline GPS wrist accessory aimed to help the user get to their desired location. The user first key in the desired location into the NAVI app, sync the watch to the app via BlueTooth, an arrow would pop up on the watch, guiding the user to the location like a compass. NAVI is designed to help tourists to get to their hotels and venues without having to check the internet or ask random strangers for help. NAVI can also be used by the elderly who suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s to help them get home safely every time.

I was tasked by the group to create the product housing and the user experience aspect of Navi. I was inspired by the retro calculator watches of the 80s and the slick interior of japanese cars of that era. Creating a rigid form that is intuitive and familiar.

REPOSE
bedside speaker
REPOSE is an attempt to further essentialize the items placed on the nightstand. With the invention of the smartphone, alarm clocks have become a thing of the past, users would use the in-built alarm systems in their mobile phones, leaving their devices to charge overnight. REPOSE is a bedside speaker focused on enhancing this modern bed-time ritual. The speaker provides 2 charging ports for the user to charge their devices. With 2 in-built subwoofers, it provides surround sound coverage for leisure tunes or to amplify your alarm. This can be achieved with It’s wireless BlueTooth function. Inspired by the Tibetan Singing Bowl, the volume is adjusted by sliding your finger in the groove located at the top of the speaker. Sliding clockwise would decrease its volume, sliding it anti-clockwise would result in the opposite.

Every single component of the bench were done by hand. Nearly 60+ man-hours went into creating the bench. Designed and crafted by Edwind Tan and Chong Zi En.
16
INGENUE wooden bench
Designed to resemble a sliced stone slab, Ingenue is crafted with the intent to create segregation between users. A bench is supposed to be shared, having a height difference would discourage the action of taking up the entire bench. Utilizing only wooden joints to connect the individual pieces, the elegance of the joints can be see throughout the entire bench. Dovetail, Finger, Mortise and Tenon joints were Incorporated in designing the bench.

JIOÜ is a knowledge marketplace where people can interact and learn different sets of skills from one another. With this platform, users can choose to either be a teacher or a student. If you have some skills or knowledge you would like to share, be it, recipes or dialects. Just simply put up a posting and wait for interested parties to chat you up on the details and set up an appointment. As for payments for your services, it could either be monetary or trade this set of skill for another skill from your ‘students’, teach one thing and learn another. This app is focused on dissolving the generation gap between the young and the old. As the older generations are pioneers in their fields, we the younger generations have a lot to learn from them.

MAGGI - SOTANGY future of home cooking
As part of our Final Year Project, My school partnered up with Maggi to find out why millennials prefer to eat out instead of preparing their own meals and come up with ideas to promote home cooked meals. After researching user behavior and interviewing the target audience. I found out that they would love to prepare their own meals at home, it’s cheaper and they can prepare it however they like. But they do not have the proper equipment, time, knowledge and space to prepare their meals at home. It is simply easier for them to leave it to the professionals and order their meals instead. Inspired by our own army’s Combat Rations. SoTangy is a fuss-free method of meal preparation, aimed to streamline the meal preparation process. Simply chop up your desired meats and place it into the marination bag, Zip it up, fiddle with it a little and drop it into a pot of boiling water (rice cookers work too). Let it cook for 15-20 minutes and your meal is prepared. (Designed as part of my Final Year Project)

Heavily influenced by the early Bauhaus movement, the form and material exploration of the cantilever chair. Using mainly Stainless steel pipe to create the form, ANGUIS symbolizes the Ouroboros, a snake eating its own tail, representing infinity and wholesomeness.

The beauty of air can be brought out in many ways. Although we can’t really see ‘air’, we can definitely feel its presence. The thought of visualizing the beauty of air intrigued me. Trying to create a sense of beauty for something we can’t even see allowed me to think of ways to where the user could visualise air without the use of their visual senses. CAELI was designed to convey messages to the user through pressurised air. Through the usage of braille, holes on the surface allows the pressurised air to pass through, whipping against the user’s hand. The haptic perception carries messages to users with knowledge of the braille language. Through the sense of touch, users can experience the beauty of air.

production illustrations I’ve always been a big fan of sneakers. From loving the design of Tinker Hatfield’s early Air Jordan models to Ben Herath’s amazing and innovative work over at Adidas. I’ve always been intrigued by the production of the sneakers, the side we consumers don’t really see. So I did my research and created posters of a few of my favorite shoes and how they are made in a fun, gulliver’s travel-esk manner to let other interested parties learn more about what makes the sneaker so great and even the history behind the sneakers.

home-based wheelchair 52
Seat transferal is one of the most overlooked daily necessities for the wheelchair bound. After witnessing my grandfather needing assistance to be transferred from the wheelchair to his bed, it inspired me to create a wheelchair that enables the user to be fully independent. Disability does not mean inability. Conventional manual wheelchairs are hard to transfer as they can only be accessed through the front. So with that in mind, NOVA is designed with collapsible side armrest panels, when collapsed, it’ll act as a bridge to connect to the desired seat, be it the couch or the toilet seat. Nova aims to alleviate the stress and effort required for such a small task and eliminate the entities of assistance and transfer products. Live your best with Nova. (Designed as part of my Final Year Project)

wireless portable charger Pebble was an attempt to eliminate the ‘middleman’ in terms of charging your mobile devices on the go. By eliminating the wire adaptor required for most conventional portable chargers and adopting the wireless charging technology, it allows the user to have more freedom in charging different devices. Pebble alleviates the hassle of charging cables by totally eliminating them, allowing the user to share the charger without the worry of not having the correct charging cable.

Apart from creating the UX/UI for the application. I took up the role of cameraman to film a promotional video that would accompany the app. The video showcases the struggles of our shy protagonist, unable to gain any significant amount of weight. Slowly with the guidance or Brofessor, the protagonist got into a healthy workout routine, started to eat right and also made a few friends on the platform. The video was uploaded onto youtube and it has garnered positive feedback from the community.
