Hi, my name is EDWIN, 3rd year student from NCKU Department of Industrial Design. I was born and raised in Indonesia, before spending Highschool years in Malaysia and ultimately came Taiwan for university. Being in different country has given me a lot of opportunities, such like learning new languages, understand the strengths and issues that each country has, and most importantly being able to learn better communication and adaptation in multiple environments.
For me, design is about making all the sensible choices to serve a purpose. I wanted to make design that could actually make impact to users other than myself, and I strongly believe that it can only be possible to achieve with teamwork, therefore, I’m very excited to start working and collaborate with other people as a professional team.

JOI PREGNANCY WELLNESS ASSISTANT
The aim of the project is to combine the functionality of current smart devices to help enhance pregnancy experience.
Background
|
Giving birth is important, but why is it still a sad experience? I wanted to know why most people still felt that having a child is a very tiring and sad process. I wanted to dive deeper to the issue and see what I can do to help solve this long-going issue through design.

Consulting the right people To get accurate understanding, I contacted two mothers with more than one pregnancy experiences, get to understand them, and try to write down the details from their pregnancy stories. Additionally, I also consulted specialist Doctor Lin for medical insights on pregnancy.

Still a student during the first pregnancy. Feels that physical change is one of the major factor of depression.
懷孕期間繼續上課，也會做家事。對於自己在懷孕相 關知識的不足感到緊張，但不太擅長自己查詢解答， 會在產檢時請教醫生。同時在大醫院和婦產科診所 做產檢。會做爬樓梯、散步等醫生建議的運動。孕期 情緒不穩定的情況比較嚴重。 第一胎約10年前，那時媽媽社團甚至網路都還不興 盛，因此沒怎麼接觸。後來第二胎也就沒有相關的使 用習慣，但有問題會打電話到診所詢問醫生和護士。

本人工作的關係，知道的東西很多，相對也就比較沒 有那麼不安。會和其他媽媽分享孕期閒的問題和建 議。覺得醫生應該要再對媽媽細心一點。孕期期間不 會特別去運動，但有工作上的通勤。曾經因爲沒有胎 動跑到醫院請醫生檢查。 會加入FB的媽媽社團，覺得有很多問題可以在那裡得 到分享和解答，也可以找到媽媽同伴。 第一胎時曾因為擔心孩子狀況，考慮過購買胎音器，後 因聽說可能對孩子有害而作罷。但第二胎後因為已熟 悉懷孕流程便沒有這個需求了。

Doctors kept saying that everything is alright, while in reality mothers are anxious of everything. The one’s responsible to guide pregnancy process are the doctors, but doctors are very busy and could only care about patient’s health safety, which resulted in pregnant mother’s anxiousness being neglected.

Most problem caused by inevitable factors. I collected all the causes and feelings they get during the pregnancy period. Mostly are negative ones, and caused by physical and social factor, which are something that basically can’t be prevented.

At this point I’m sure that the problem is psychological. And therefore I went to consult psychology expert. One remarkable method that is recommended in the field is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Advice from the expert:
“ Designers like to use the phrase solving problem. However, it is inapproprate to address mothers as having a problem”

PROBLEM WITH IMPLEMENTATION OF CB METHOD + Habit
Most mother, especially in asian culture, has the tendency to avoid seeking for psychological advice from the expert.
+ Long procedure
Mother are only pregnant for 9 months, and normal procedure takes up into 6 months, which is illogical for pregnant mothers.
+ Lazy to read
The information are readily available in books and articles, but most mothers just don’t have the time and effort to read all the needed information.

We need it to be quick and easy, APP is the most feasible and direct solution for this.
We also added additional device to provide physical interaction which isn’t provided by the app
FINAL SOLUTION I decided to use APP as the most suitable solution as the platform for self understanding . While also adding a companion device to help build wellness habit such like meditation and fetal interaction.

Fetal interaction is crucial for their happiness. By using doppler method mothers could have tangible interaction with the unborn through vibration.

What I learned from the project Mental and psychological problem is a very complicated task to tackle, and I believe that my presented design is far from enough to solve the problem. Nevertheless I still think there’s a need to make effort and try my best to make a difference. Through this project, I learned on how to symphatise more on the feeling and psychological condition of the user. I learned to respect mothers even more, and be more aware of people’s psychological condition. 25

+ The district is nationwide famous for it’s mango, and I used the fruit combined with safe house as the ideation for the branding.
The naming means a wishing for the luck to always be on our side. We chose the name cause it represents cultural values that is also accepted by the elderly.

Design Features | Quick action form The form is easily accessible from home, and has a clear and direct instructions of what they’re filling and which part of the process they are at the moment.
Flexible fill-in Flow I divided the form into three parts which could be edited at any moment, making it possible to fill it back and forth , thus giving more assurance and flexibility.

Looking into Global Issues Pneumonia accounts for 16% of all deaths of children under 5 years old, killing 920 136 children in 2015.
2016 WHO report shows that 95% of the pneumonia case are influenced by indoor pollution caused by the smoke from solid-fuel stove.

Limited Resources Supply of LPG and kerosene fuel is extremely limited. They only have coal and wood as the remaining choice
Latest Improvement Rocket stove that was developed in years has succesfully reduce the amount of smoke produced.
A Matter of Behavior People in the rural area still get used to fast ignition by blowing directly into newly sparked fire.

1. Pedal operated by hand or feet.
2. The Pedal is moved down, thus brings the helical vertical gear to rotate.
3. First Gear moved the second gear which then spins the fan-blade.
4. Blown air circulates throughout the stove.
What I learned from the project We can only know if a design is a good until we see it actually works in real life situation, and I understand that this project is still lacking in this particular point. The lack of realization means that the design can only serves as ideation, not something that could improve someone’s life. Hopefully in the future I will put more effort in the realization part, to further proof the functionality in real life situation. 51

In collaboration with ThermalTake™, we are tasked to design a new custom pc case made from combination of the fiberglass and sheet metal.

First we examined and analysed the current trend on custom PC, the must have components and also how the user actually use the product.
The Customizable PC case has a several important elements, mounting space and arrangement, accessibility, air flow, flexibility and styling.

We positioned the fan on the upper top of the case, and tilted the whole body for about 10 degree to the front to get better air flow. 58

Design a consumer product that showcases the essence and values of Harley Davidson.
Value Analysis
| Started from garage, supporting the world war equipment, and and ultimately into pop culture. It has become a character itself, revolving around the spirit of americans. As the symbol of independence, ingenuity, and perseverance.
Why choose a watch ? Watch resembles the core value of the brand: timelessness and historical value.

CLAY MODELLING Intro
|
The purpose of this project is to introduce ourselves into clay, work on subject research, problem solving and analysis skill.
First I researched and sketched out the anatomy to better understand the details, shape and structure of the species.
Next, I shaped the desired structure using aluminium wiring and metal net. Then continued to cover it with clay.

SHIRT DESIGN Intro

The task was to create a shirt that could represents NCKU Overseas Chinese Student Association
Development
|
I brainstormed variation of representation of the association, and came up with three ideas
1. Varsity A more generic representation of university using typographic format.
2. Overseas Taking inspiration from OCSA logo, I use ship to represent chinese travelers
3. Sweet oriental Combining oriental and asian chinese elements into subtle graphical composition.
