This book features a selection of work that has been completed over the past couple years. Some work was for clients while others were part of my studies towards an MFA in graphic design. You’ll find that some projects give you a glimpse into what went into creating the finished work, while others showcase only the final results.

The DeVos Art Museum is a local art museum located on the campus of Northern Michigan University. During the summer of 2013 the museum asked me to work on redesigning the museum’s identity and communication materials. Since the museum’s building is a recognizable feature on the universities campus, most of the initial logo concepts look to the architecture and façade of the building for inspiration.

The museum uses a dimension for the posters that is not very common and difficult to work with (8.5 × 14in). In order to standardize their communications—and make it easier to work with in the future—the poster was divided into two sections. The top portion features the primary visuals—which change for every exhibition—while the bottom potion is the standardized museum information with the exhibition’s dates, title, & any other events or information.
PRINT COLL ATER AL — POSTER

The bottom portion of the poster was then translated to the brochures. This standardized section was relocated from the bottom to the top for better viewing when the brochures are placed in brochure racks.

During the creation of the site, it was important to keep in mind social media and mobile viewers. The previous site had no sharing capabilities. This site allows the viewer to share upcoming exhibitions, events, and even archived exhibitions. It’s also viewable on any media size, which means easy reading and viewing on smart phones

OSCR—Organization Supplying Classrooms—is the result of a semester long project that looked at one of our nation’s education system problems—poorly supplied public school classrooms. To help alleviate the problem, the organization uses today’s technology with American’s generosity and set up a Kickstarter like program where any school or district can use OSCR’s site to create a profile and raise funds through

donations and events.

When developing the logo, several goals were kept in mind that needed to be achieved. First, it had to stay away from the typical signs that are used for any organization connected to education, i.e. apple, pencil, book, ruler, chalk. Second, it should feel kid friendly but designed at the same time. Finally, it need to reference the classroom or classroom supplies. 27

At this stage, the primary mark was explored. Initially I played with typefaces that resembled handmade letters, created a face with the initials, and used a cut paper font. It became clear that the cut paper would become more versatile and meet the requirements that needed to be met with the logo.

The final logo uses construction paper cut into the shapes of the organization’s initials. The colors used are complimentary pairings with the primary typeface being Gotham Rounded. This font’s terminals are rounded—which feels more friendly—and the letters are legible on screen and in print.

WEBSITE — LANDING & PROFILE PAGES
The site’s homepage background color and statistic changes on reload, rotating through four different versions for each color from the logo. What was important was making the donation call to action as easy to find as possible, without having it front and center and the only object on the page. The school’s profile page draws heavily from exercise progress apps, making it easy to visualize the amount raised. To help raise funds, a goal is set at the beginning of the year and tracked with a circle graph, using the same construction paper texture as the logo.

PACK AGING — DONATION KIT FRONT

The donation kits are used to donate classroom supplies. Able families can fill the kits with whatever they can manage and then write their names on the cover. Bringing a completed kit to the annual cookout fundraiser grants free entry where the kits are then proudly displayed.

Oscr’s Nationwide Cookout is an annual fundraiser that occurs around the end of July, early August. Schools, teachers, or parent groups organize the event and use the customizable materials provided by the organization. Local restaurants and grocers are asked to donate materials while proceeds from ticket sales are donated to local schools. A web app is used to sell tickets and take donations, with
47
funds going towards the organizers’ schools.

CONCEPT SKETCHES — APP & POSTER
The main visuals for the fundraiser would use a combination of typical cookout foods paired with a common school supply to create an image that connects the two. Three IPad & poster computer sketches were created to explore the different options created with these combinations.

The final deliverables include a web app that organizers use to sell tickets/gather donations from the cookout, a ticket for entry (digital or printed), lanyard name tags and a series of posters promoting the event. Organizers would go through an online form to customize each of the visuals for their specific event and at the same time, keeping the fundraiser’s visuals 44
consistent throughout the country.

Fanmly is an app that focuses on helping to solve the overcrowding problem in animal shelters. It’s an app/site that gives all shelters the ability to list their animals on a nationwide network that’s easy to use on any device—phone, tablet, or desktop. The goal is to bring the adoption process into our mobile lives. An identity was deigned along with some of the apps interface.

ME — CONTACT / ABOUT
THNX! I hold a BFA in photography and am currently working on my MFA in graphic design. Type is my thing. I love looking at letters and typefaces—along with the rich history of printing. I have more books on typography than any other topic in my small, but respectable, collection of books. Print or digital? I work with both and enjoy certain aspects of each. Print’s long lasting and smells great. Digital is temporary and always offers an opportunity for improvement. Teaching graphic communications forced me to face one of my biggest fears—public speaking—but also made me good at convincing people I know what I’m doing. Receiving awards—DeVos Art Museum website (GD USA American Design Awards 2014), Great American Cookout (GD USA American Design Awards 2014), Fanmly (GD USA American Design Awards 2013)—and recognition feels great, but I like creating things and doing that for a living. The awards are just a confirmation that my nights & weekends are being well spent.
