B4ET
Campus Amenities Building - Tucson AZ March 2019 - January 2022 B4ET is located on the corporate campus for a Switzerland based diagnostics and pharmaceuticals company. The building provides program for dining, meeting, exercising, and general wellbeing. ZGF began working on the project shortly after the client parted ways with it’s previous architect at 90% CDs. Our first task was to help the client choose whether they should renovate their existing dining hall, revise the previous architects new building design, or start from scratch on a new building. Once the decision was made that ZGF would start on the design of a new building, we set out to combine the clients global swiss modern design language with the pueblo, desert vernacular. A ribbon window envelope around 3 block volumes of varying heights was developed and made from neutral, modern, and spartan materials that were accentuated with pops of color in interior finishes and furniture upholstery.

Fill in corners around the exterior of the building Looks nice in plan, but does it subtract from 3 volumes in 3D? Not dissimilar to some of our earlier plinth studies Overlapping canopies keeps them physically of B2 and B3, spine separate This option seems overly complex and but not ties as them together visually. ZGF OFFICE
Architectural Office - Los Angeles CA January 2017 - August 2017 While working at ZGF during my 4th year in college as part of a co-op, I took the TI renovation of ZGFs office from design conception and programming all the way through construction documents and construction administration, returning to finish my 5th year of school a few months before the project was complete. The previous design for their 37th floor office in Downtown LA had been completed in the 90s and was in need of some modernization. ZGF wanted to find a perfect balance between a bustling and lively architectural studio you might find at the top architecture schools in the country, and a modern and sophisticated corporate office setting. I was fortunate to be able to take this project through all phases of design, from programming meetings with ZGF partners, to conceptualizing the design concept, developing of doors details, bathroom details, ceiling details, and various other details, and finally to implementation and execution in construction administration.

AIA LA 2X8
Exhibit design and construction - Los Angeles CA January 2019 - May 2019 Each year, the AIA holds 2x8, a design showcase that originally provided the opportunity for 2 projects from 8 architecture schools across California to win some scholarship money from various sponsors. In addition to this, a design competition is opened to the public where designs for the exhibit itself are submitted and a winner is chosen to be built for the final show. Our team of Jonathan Sharp, Christopher Locke, Matthew Young, Marisa Keckeisen, and myself designed and built an exhibit that was a forward-thinking take on the traditional gallery setting. Our design was a winding art gallery around clustered nodes of engagement. It elegantly performed it’s function as an art gallery, but one night could host a VR watch party, while the next night it may accommodate the next Culver City Neighborhood Council Meeting. When all was said and done, the cardboard tubes found new homes at local schools and in artists studios.

After we won the design competition and began work on implementation, the original location fell through. We had to quickly adapt our design for a long corridor gallery to a much larger, square shaped gallery.

A New American Suburb aims to increase the density and usage types in suburbs, while decreasing their reliance on cars in a theoretical American suburb called “Gleamy Valley”. The codes in this suburb are changed to make side yards into lots that mixed use buildings can then be built on. The existing homes are also modified, some are split into two apartments, some are adapted to support an industrial kitchen for a restaurant, and some make room for offices to run a small business. All these changes make sprawled, single use, car reliant suburbs into places that can support and enliven the lives of the shifting American demographic. Suburbs are everywhere in America, and can be modified to become much more environmentally responsible and comfortable places to live. This design thesis is also accompanied by a book, which can be read online.

Gleamy Valley, anywhere USA. This fabricated site is intentionally ambiguous, the principles and ideas laid out in this thesis could theoretically be implemented in any suburb across the country.

The new suburban lot protects the holy grail of suburbia, the backyard, but trims down the front yard, and eliminates the often forgotten side yard.

The new suburban street is narrower, naturally slowing down passing traffic. It has also moved closer to one row of houses, freeing up valuable land for park space, underground public transit, or future development. These vast new interconnected public spaces create a much more walkable and accessible suburbia.

A typical suburban home with a family room and a living room, 4 bedrooms, and 2 and a half bathrooms, somewhere around 2,000 SF not counting the basement.

A New American Suburb housing people, not cars
In Gleamy valley, the Burbanks have split their home into 2 apartments. They will live on level 1 with their only child, all they had to do was add another bathroom and bedroom. The new upstairs apartment they can rent out for supplemental income, they just had to convert what was the master suite into a kitchen/living/dining room.
