Career: Marketing managers create advertisements to get buyers to like and buy their products or services

Lesson: This lesson plan provides activities for students to learn about marketing managers and how they target buyers to purchase their products and services.

TEACHER GUIDE

Lesson Instructions: The following activities will help you introduce students to how marketing managers create ads to get buyers to buy their products or services. Begin the lesson by reading the Class Message below to your students, then have them watch the recommended career video. Afterwards, facilitate discussion using the Class Questions listed below.

After the discussion, students will work on two activities. Each activity has a printable worksheet with student instructions and areas to record their work. Have students read their worksheets before beginning each activity.

You should also familiarize yourself with the student worksheets to provide assistance when needed, help demonstrate any procedures, and help in facilitating the discussion that ends each activity

Class Message: Today, we are going to learn about a marketing manager and how they get us to want and buy their products and services. Do any of you know what an advertisement or a commercial is? You would usually see them on tv, online, or hear them on the radio trying to get you to buy a toy, try a food item, or go somewhere fun like the zoo!

Marketing managers spend a lot of time creating ways to get you to want and buy their products. In this lesson, you will learn how marketing managers target buyers to buy their products and services You will learn what a marketing manager does by creating a collage of ads focusing on a theme.

Class Discussion Questions:

〉 What do you think a commercial or ad is? - Response Suggestions: a commercial is trying to sell you something, it is showing you something you may need or want, it is wanting you to buy their product, etc.

〉 When you watch TV, drive down the street, or go online with your parents, what are some of the commercials you remember seeing? - Allow students to share experiences.

〉 What are some toys you have seen advertised on TV or online? - Response Suggestions: stuffed animals, robots, cars, bicycles, etc.

Activities Overview: This lesson plan includes two student activities. Activity #1 challenges students to identify products and the company (i.e. brand) that produced them to learn how marketing managers target buyers. In Activity #2, students will learn about the work of a marketing manager by creating a collage of ads focusing on a theme.

Read and familiarize yourself with the student worksheet for each activity.

Activity #1: Spotting Brands

Students will learn how marketing managers target buyers to buy their products and services through branding.

Activity Instructions:

〉 Hand out the student worksheet.

〉 Introduce the activity and guide students as needed.

〉 Project each image on the board and guide a discussion on which companies sell the product or service. See questions and answers in Teacher Guide below.

〉 After completion, facilitate a discussion using the questions for the activity.

Activity Results: This activity introduces students to the career of a marketing manager and illustrates how the companies they work for use brand recognition to advertise their products.

〉 Did you recognize all of these brands? How many of you have these brands at home? - Allow students to share their experience.

〉 What could a marketing manager do to get you to buy these products? - Sample answers may include: give away samples for free, give out coupons to buy the products, reduce the cost of the product, offer new designs/flavors, etc.

〉 Think about some of the things you use every day, what are some of these products? - Sample answers may include: a specific type of cereal, toothpaste, clothing, lunch item, etc. (i.e. Fruit Loops, Crest for Kids, Converse shoes, Jell-O, etc.)

Activity #2: Ad Collage

Students will learn about the career of a marketing manager by creating a collage of ads focusing on a theme.

Activity Instructions:

〉 Hand out the student worksheet.

〉 Provide magazines, print advertisements, catalogs, newspapers, etc.

〉 Students will also need scissors, liquid glue, paste, or tape

〉 Introduce the activity and guide students as needed.

〉 Optional – have students explain their collage to the class

〉 After completion, facilitate a discussion using the questions for the activity.

Activity Results: Students learned about the career of a marketing manager by choosing ads focusing on a theme to create a collage and presenting their theme to the class.

Activity Discussion:

〉 What was your theme? How difficult was it to find pictures to show your theme?Allow students to share their experience.

〉 Your theme is your product, what can you do to get others to like your theme?Sample answers may include: tell others why you picked the theme, explain why you like it, benefits of the theme, etc.

〉 What do you think are some other things you can do to sell your theme? - Sample answers may include: advertise, give out samples, post or promote on social media, tell everyone you know, have a celebrity endorse/use it, etc.
