The Girl Who Survived AN AMAZING STORY ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST A girl named Bronia Bradman had survived a shocking event. The Holocaust. Bronia tells her story on how she escaped, know that her parents will die, and living with the fact that half her family has died due to the Holocaust. The story starts off with Bronia explaining her happy family and the wonderful Jewish tradition they shared. Then, the book takes a dreadful turn. The Nazis took over and the Jews were considered to be lower than the Germans. Many innocent Jewish people were killed because of what religion they worshipped. Jewish people were restricted from certain shops or schools. In fact, many Jewish citizens were short on money as well. Bronia and her family suffered from bankruptcy. Bronia became a smuggler to help her family prosper. Soon later, her parents get taken away, many family members die, and her sisters and Bronia get sent to work in a concentration camp. Her sister, Mila becomes very sick and dies. Now Bronia is alone. However, She finds a way and escapes her horrendous “treatment”. Bronia moves to America and soon lives a happy life. I think that Bronia’s story was astonishing. The fact that she was brave and did not show severe emotion to save her life. The fact that she is alive saves a whole generation of other children.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE There were a lot of things I didn’t know about this book. However, there were a few things that I did know! I knew what the Holocaust was because I learned it previously so it gave me a clear perspective of what the book was about. I also knew that Hitler had a prejudice against Jews because he killed them! If it wasn’t obvious, but I also knew that the book was about a girl who survived since that is the title of the book.

CURIOSITY KILLS THE CAT

This is Bronia Brandman today.

There is a rush of curiosity that goes through your mind when you are reading this book. I wanted to know what the main character felt when she saw her parents being captured and killed by the Nazis. Not only were her parents killed, but with Bronia's own eyes, she saw her sister go into a gas chamber. Ready to be killed. Usually, when you lose someone you mourn. However, when Bronia's parents and sister

died, she managed to not cry. She was so strong during the Holocaust. While Bronia was in the labor camps, she was diagnosed with Typhus. Typhus is a disease by rats. I was really curious about how she got cured from this dreadful disease and the chance of dying. Speaking of labor camp, what is the difference between labour camps and concentration camps? These are some serious events!

YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYDAY! Maybe I lied a bit when I said that she cried when her sister went to the gas chamber. Bronia thought that crying will get you nowhere or it would not be helpful. However, she felt guilty. She was about to go into that chamber but ran away from the entrance and was able to work in the labor camp. Speaking of concentration camps and labor camps, what is the difference between them? Well, concentration camps are used to exterminate and labor camps are used to force labor. Don't you ever wonder why these camps closed down? I mean, it wasn't a very pleasant camp but who can stop the Nazis? The Russians can! The Russian came to Poland to stop them. Hooray! There is something else that really stood out that I learned. Did you know that Hitler killed himself? Also, some people don't believe that the Holocaust happened. Personally, I think it did because I don't think Bronia could come up with such an emotional, amazing story if it didn't actually happen.

A NEW PATH To me, success means accomplishing or achieving something that you wanted to do or accomplishing a task. For example, if you wanted to be a type of occupation, and you get that job. Being successful also means that you are doing what you love and like I said before, accomplishing something. That means you are successful. In this book Bronia becomes successful because she escaped the Nazis and made her way to the United States of America. Bronia was successful in escaping and not getting caught. Or dying. She was on her path to success! What does success mean to you?

PEOPLE’S PERSPECTIVE

Remember when I said that some people believe that the Holocaust wasn’t real? Yeah, well I wasn’t kidding. People believe the Holocaust didn’t happen because they believe that the Jews could not be so easily killed. They also said that since the Jews were living in countries where the newspaper and magazines would promote obvious lies that the Holocaust did happen. This is bias because people want to believe that the Holocaust didn’t happen and are disregarding the facts. Because people ignore this, it ends up killing people! There are people who have survived the Holocaust and have vivid memories about it. My question is, how can you fake a genocide?
